Friends! I am so excited to be back this week for another episode. This week’s guest is my brother Ethan Hulse! Ethan currently lives in Nashville with his wife Erin and their new baby boy Porter. In this episode Ethan shares with us his journey in the music industry and becoming Grammy nominated songwriter. As the youngest little sister of the family, I have gotten to watch his entire music journey. From cheering him on as his middle school band played at the local music venue “Chain Reaction” and now getting to watch him receive a Grammy nomination—I’m one proud little sister! One thing Ethan and I always talk about is each of our own relationships to the church and spirituality. In this episode Ethan not only shares with us more about the music industry, but also his personal discovery of a deeper, wider, and more holistic view of Christ and spirituality. I continue to learn a lot from him about the process of deconstruction and the beauty found in re-ordering spirituality.I’m really excited for you to listen in to our conversation! Here are 3 easy ways to show your support of this podcast:1) Subscribe! Friends, I am so excited for you to listen to our guest for this episode! I first met Kayla during my first day of graduate school. We are both in the same program aiming to obtain our Master’s degrees in Human Communication Studies. Kayla is not only such a great friend to me and so many others, but she continually advocates and encourages those around her to look critically at the systems that they are a part of. Whenever I want to have a deep conversation Kayla is one of the first people I think of. I value her opinion of this world and I know that you will too! In this episode we dive into her journey of coming out and LGBTQ+ pride. Her words and her story continually teach me so much. On this episode today she does nothing less than bring us into those places of vulnerability, and for that, I am so grateful. I’m so glad you get to hear this conversation with one of the absolute best people—Kayla! Also, some of you have been asking how you can support this podcast. In this episode, Mahala and I explore what it means to engage in anti-racist work as white people in America. We recorded this episode on Sunday May 24th, just about 24 hours before the killing of George Floyd at the hands of white law enforcement officers. We want to be mindful to add that we didn’t mention this because it had not yet occurred. Without discounting the trauma of what has happened in our world over this past week, we can’t ignore the fact that this has been a reality for people of color in our country for far too long. This is a conversation that needs to happen. I recently saw a quote from Jen Hatmaker that I want to share here. She said, “If we are not anti-racist, we are racist. There is no neutral when black lives continue to be dispensable and disposable day after day. There is no neutral when we gently benefit from white supremacy without challenging its demonic, inherent evils. This is our work.” In this episode, Mahala and I lean in to the conversation of white privilege and what it means to do anti-racist work. As Mahala’s friend, I can truly say that her work in this world is powerful. I’ve listened to this episode multiple times and continue to learn so much from her words. But the work goes beyond this episode. This is a conversation to have with your family, your friends, your workplace, and with yourself.
