Why would Caro want to share a bottle of wine with Al Gore?   Key Takeaways As Caro explains, often biodynamics is just picked on as a woo woo, but really, it's about listening to your land and being present. Biodynamics is organics, plus. It's essentially three things: It's working with plant and animal-based sprays to keep the vineyard healthy, using the biodynamic calendar to do things at the right moment. It's about listening to what's going on in the sky. We all notice the sun, but all the other bodies in the sky also have an impact. Lunatic comes from the fact that the moon does have an effect on us. The final thing is to think of your farm as a whole farm system as a living thing where everything is connected. We can't just look at the vine on its own, like a unit of production. It is a living thing, and it is a vibrant living environment. Caro says that when they bought the farm in 2005, it was conventionally farmed. They started organic farming and in 2008 the wild orchids came back. The systemic fungicides had worked their way out of the soil. Essentially, our soil health was coming back. The mycorrhizae, the fungi growing symbiotically with the roots of the vine, helps them to extend their network, to get more nutrients. However, mycorrhizae will not be there if you're using systemic fungicides. Caro loves France's respect for food and for taking time to enjoy it. There's a tradition in the country where everybody, no matter what they do, is somewhat of a gourmet and knows about food and wine. She thinks it does go back to schools with their three-course lunch when they're two and a half at preschool.   About Caro Feely Caro Feely is a writer, yoga teacher, wine educator and organic farmer. What are some of the funniest and most surprising animal-related episodes that have happened at the winery?   Key Takeaways As Caro explains it involves heavy machinery, tractors, attaching things to tractors, moving heavy pipes and other equipment around. Even hand picking grapes is a fairly active sport. Removing the vine shoots or suckers at the base of the vine is a big job and backbreaking. They don't want them to grow because they take nutrients from the grapes. Caro says that many wine lovers don't realize how dangerous winemaking is. There are four killers of wine makers. The first one was asphyxiation by CO2. In the fermentation, CO2 is created. If you don't have a way for it to get out of the closed spaces, you're going to get asphyxiated. The second one is falling from height particularly if a little bit of CO2 has escaped and made you a little lightheaded. The next one is machinery, so horrific things like falling into a harvest trailer. Electrocution because you're working with liquids and high electricity. Caro says that almost all of her wines are labelled Vin de France because she felt that so many of the appellation rules were not about the quality of the wine. She wanted to be free of those unnecessary constraints. For example, one biodynamic winemaker got kicked out of the appellation system because he had weeds under his vines. He handpicks his grapes so it actually doesn't matter if they're weeds under the vines. If you machine pick, the machine will kind of suck up the weeds. Caro would much rather have some weeds than have to use synthetic weed killer. Even when it comes to Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé and Premier Grand Cru Classé, some growers got more appellation points for having a parking lot for tour guests than they received for being certified organic.   About Caro Feely Caro Feely is a writer, yoga teacher, wine educator and organic farmer. You're in the final week of the April Mindful Minutes challenge!  It's time to level-up and experience longer periods of silence to truly practice cultivating a meditative state of mind.  I started you with baby steps with ONE MINUTE on Day One, leading you in “high guidance” mindfulness sessions. The meditations slowly got longer with “medium guidance” where I slowly lengthened the periods of silent meditation.  Now this week I am introducing TWO 10-minute stretches of silence with a brief intermission. You will hear the sound of bells, my voice, then I'll guide you back into the second 10-minutes of silent meditation. DAY EIGHTEEN April Mindful Minutes challenge:FIRE MEDITATIONToday's episode focuses  on the natural element of FIRE.  Feel a sense of energy, warmth, passion, and comfort in this meditation.  Additional moments of silence will be introduced with 5-minutes of quiet near the end of the meditation.If you wish to skip the introduction and go straight to the meditation, begin at 2:40.BREATHING TIPS FOR THIS MEDITATIONUjjayi pranayama involves breathing through the nose, slightly constricting the back of the throat (the epiglottis) to create a soft, hissing sound, similar to the sound of the ocean.  With the mouth closed inhale through the nostrils then slowly release and exhale through the nostrils.  Expand and Release: fill the air as you expand the belly, lungs and ribcages when you inhale and a release that air & emptying out when you exhale.CHECK-IN: Before and after each practice I will invite you to check in and rate your stress level from 0 - 5.0 = low5 = high⁠Follow along daily for 30 days to create a meditation habit. ⁠⁠⁠ Start anytime! Amelia pulls a card, reads the message then sets you up for your 5 minutes of silent meditation. Listen, meditate, or journal. Enjoy!The video version if this episode is on Spotify.BREATHING TIPS FOR THIS MEDITATIONUjjayi pranayama involves breathing through the nose, slightly constricting the back of the throat (the glottis) to create a soft, hissing sound, similar to the sound of the ocean.  With the mouth closed inhale through the nostrils then slowly release and exhale through the nostrils.  Expand and Release: create space as you expand the belly, lungs and ribcages when you inhale and a release & emptying out when you exhale.CHECK-IN: Before and after each practice I will invite you to check in and rate your stress level from 0 - 5.0 = zero worries/stress5 = feeling like you're going to lose it.Follow along daily for 30 days to create a meditation habit. ⁠⁠ Start anytime! To experience the cumulative benefits, practice daily, ideally at the same time every day. As each meditation gets longer, you can choose to follow the daily meditation or repeat a previous meditation. Choose what helps you best stick to a daily practice. Welcome to Spiritually Fit Yoga!This is a check-in for Day Eleven of your April Mindful Minutes challenge.A few funny things happened:I recorded this episode to be published at 11:11am today (on April 11th) and that is will on scheduleI woke up in the morning feeling like something was off and asked "has someone created a habit already, meditating at the same time every day? and i just threw off their schedule for this 30-day challenge?So, as I was out walking my dog, I saw the time 7:11am and tuned into the angel number "11". my intuition told me "record a little SOMETHING for that person looking for an episode this morning."I had to run some errands. I saw 8:11 (no joke this happens to me) and I set up to record.I recorded a video for you AND it took several takes because the mic was on mute...sheesh I finally finished, just a short check-in, uploaded the video THEN it published UPSIDE DOWN! WTF!?So, I debated, do I upload it as is or publish the audio.If you want to watch the video, it's on my @spirituallyfityoga Instagram page.And, for today, enjoy this audio check-in!I thought mercury retrograde was done! Welcome to Spiritually Fit Yoga with Amelia Andaleon!DAY EIGHT April Mindful Minutes challenge:EIGHT MINUTES - DIRGA BREATH✅ Congratulations on completing week one of this 30-day mindfulness challenge!Today I'm introducing you to Dirga breathing which is a basic yoga breath work technique or pranayama.  Almost six minutes of this episode is an introduction, including any contraindications.  If at any time you feel discomfort, gently stop the practice.  CHECK-IN: Before and after each practice I will invite you to check in and rate your stress level from 0 - 5.0 = zero worries/stress, 5 = feeling like you're going to lose it.MY STORYWhen I began learning breath work, I had to ease into it. I didn't realize I was breathing so shallow.  Oxygenating my lungs & brain initially made me feel dizzy and anxious, which can be typical experiences when first learning deep breathing.  As I continued practicing, I increased my lung capacity, I reduced my need for my inhaler (I had asthma), and I increased my overall sense of well-being. ~15 years later my asthma is gone.  I also realized my asthma was triggered by stress and anxiety.  Once I learned how to breathe & manage stress, my asthma disappeared.  Still hard to believe!That's just one profound way how meditation and breath work have made a difference in my life.These episodes are posted at 7am PST. Welcome to Spiritually Fit Yoga with Amelia Andaleon! This is a Flashback Friday sharing an audio recording from March 7th and introduction recorded March 28, 2025. It's a bit of a ramble after being back home a few days then sharing some insights and reflections about my 3+ week to the Philippines, Bali Indonesia, and Singapore.I also announce a meditation challenge I will start next week on April 1st (no fooling!) April 1 - 30 you are invited to tune into daily meditations, from 1 minute building up to 30 minutes. Right now, pausing for peace and pausing to take a break from the cray cray seems extra helpful. I've experienced and have been witnessing, an increase in stress and overwhelm. She has been involved in research piloting wellness and mindfulness sessions in hospitals and was awarded the Advancement in Medicine Grant with Avant in 2018. She enjoys medical writing with several publications on health professional wellness and is a published author of the self-help book Mastering Real Wellness. In addition to her clinical work, she founded Ataraxia Collective, a health and wellness business offering doctor CPD & well-being retreats, well-being workshops and a blog. She is an accredited yoga teacher RYT200 with Yoga Alliance. She was a board director for the RACP 2016-2018 and is the Chair of the Member Health & Wellbeing Committee (RACP) & director for Mood Active a NFP that promotes exercise as a mental health intervention.
