Balance Matters: A neuro physical therapist’s journey to make “Sense” of Balance
In this interview, the incredible Gail Wetzler, PT, DPT, EBO, BI-D and I will be exploring the fascinating connections between the pelvic floor and foot engagement—a topic we've delved into while treating a mutual patient. One of our shared clients with significant neuropathy needed help with his ankle strategy and keeping his toes down during sit-to-stand movements. This journey of discovery began when Gail asked, "Have you cued his pelvic floor?" That simple question unlocked a wealth of new insights.Join us as we dive into how it's all interconnected—from anatomy to brain function—and uncover the best ways to analyze and cue these movements. Gail Wetzler, PT, DPT, EBO, BI-D currently owns an integrative physical therapy practice in Denver, Colorado, where they treat orthopedic, fascial/muscular/soft tissue, neurologic, pain, respiratory, digestive, mTBI and women's and men's health issues. After receiving her initial degree in physical therapy, she pursued her first experience in acute orthopedic care at Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach California. Within 1 year, she became the outpatient clinical supervisor and thus began her journey and desire for continuing education in the science and art of human movement and function. She studied with Travell and Simons, Mennell, Kaltenborn, Maitland, McKenzie, Mitchell, Jones and Greenman in the earlier years of manual therapy education. Inspired by these methods of treatment, she became an assistant teacher to Dr. Janet Travell and later an instructor with the Institute of Physical Art (IPA) developed by Gregg Johnson and Vicky Saliba Johnson. In a few years, she developed her own private practice, at which time she received a large number of head, neck and TMJ pain patients. This became a driver to learn more about cranial osteopathy, craniosacral therapy and how the fields of physical therapy and dentistry could collaborate to help these patients. As she pursued continuing education classes with Dr. John Upledger, he inspired her to learn more about the different systems in the body and how they all integrated for function. During one of her earlier speaking engagements for the Upledger Institute ( Beyond the Dura), she met Jean Pierre Barral DO, who inspired the importance of anatomy, the ability to listen to the body and the specificity of tissue dialogue in manual therapy techniques. She has listened and followed his mentoring into understanding the body's deeper fascial relationship of the viscera, vascular, neurological and manual articular systems since 1989. Gail has been an instructor for the Barral Institute (BI) since 1991 and became the BI Curriculum Director in 2001.In her career, she has been invited to speak at multiple professional conferences including National and State levels for the APTA, USC Head, Neck and Facial Pain Clinic, University of California, Irvine (UCI), Beyond the Dura Research Conferences, "Hope" Head Injury Organization, and was the keynote speaker in Italy for the Fascial Manipulation Research Conference presented by Antonio, Carla and Luigi Stecco. She is the Past Director of Physical Therapy for the Integrative Medicine Center at UCI. She is currently part of the Research Team for the Upledger Foundation for their recent studies on Post Concussion Recovery She currently teaches for the Women's Health Section of the APTA "Gynecological Visceral Manipulation". Gail earned her Diplomate from the Barral Institute in 2005. She earned her Equine Diplomate in Osteopathy from Vluggen Institute of Equine Osteopathy in 2009 and she earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rosalind Franklin University, Chicago, in 2013.Gail serves on the Women's Health Task Force for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).Resources: APTA Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (aptapelvichealth.org)

In this episode, we're pleased to welcome Gita Barry, President of Immersive Healthcare at Penumbra, Inc. & Thomas Hutchinson, Executive Director of Digestive Health & Experiential Reality at Hoag Hospital, to discuss the future of providers integrating new tools.
Kate interviews her friend Dr. Jerry Weichman Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and adolescent specialist as well as an author, speaker and parenting expert. His clinical practice at Hoag Hospital's Neurosciences Institute in Newport Beach, California provides a window on contemporary teen and pre-teen behavior. He also founded The Weichman Clinic and its Teen Brain Program—the first and only truly comprehensive mental wellness program exclusively focused on children and adolescents. Jerry was born with birth defects due to medicines prescribed for his mother during her pregnancy. He was born with a right foot with no bones in it, and a deformed left foot. Doctors amputated his right foot so that he could be fitted for a prosthesis when it was time for him to learn to walk. Despite this he went on to play Division 1 college football, and is an avid snowboarder, heli-skier, surfer and mountain biker. He discusses resiliency. Today on the podcast is our real life lifesaver. Karina, the ICU nurse that did life saving CPR on my husband when he went into cardiac arrest 10 months ago at Hoag Hospital. If it wasn't for Karina showing up and giving everything that she had that day and being so great at what she does… the outcome could have been different. It's crazy because Craig had the most severe type of cardiac arrest- called VFIB and had no pulse pretty much immediately so he was in the absolute best place he could have been for this to happen. And it all happened SO FAST. In this episode, Karina and I talk about that day and what it was like from her perspective. How she remembers seeing me in the hallway screaming for help and how she was surprised that Craig was so blue in color, so quickly. I ask her all the questions about what it is like to have such a heavy job and how you can work through the trama that you experience and still go out in the world and be happy. There were so many incredible doctors and nurses that helped us over this 2 week period through operations and set-backs and organs failing and all the things that come with it. You just can't express your gratitude in words. But man, I try! There are so many cool lessons and takeaways from this conversation. And I'm just honestly so grateful for the opportunity to get to know Karina and spotlight her as the true hero that she is. Key points: -If someone you love needs your help medically, whether it is an emergency or something urgent or more long term, you have to be tough and think of yourself as their quarterback. -If there weren't brave people like her - willing to put themselves in this extreme situation to see the most traumatizing things that can happen to humans, over and over, and still show up and go to therapy and work through it so they can keep helping people is amazing. Here are some of the questions that Lindsay asks her… -First up, I'd love to understand how it works with you and your team. The day you changed our lives, I was holding my husbands hand in the ICU when he went into cardiac arrest. The nurse that was in the room and I yelled for help before the monitors were going off. Then I heard CODE BLUE through the hospital speaker. I was like oh my god that's for us. How do you guys get notified to respond and are you stationed in the ICU? -How do you decide who does what in your team? -Do you have an idea of the medical condition of most patients or are you sort of walking into the crisis and have to be briefed real quick? -What do you remember from the day with Craig? I know you have such busy days and crazy stories all the time I'm sure. Just curious as to what his situation was like from your perspective. -I can't imagine the weight that comes from your job. You seem to have a happy and full life with family and friends… traveling and doing lots of fun things. Is it hard to get that mental headspace sometimes with the weight of your job? -How has it changed you? Does it make you afraid to do things for example because you see accidents or does it make you more emotional or more tough than most people? -Do you see yourself being in this role or a similar role for a long time? If not, what else would you like to do? -How often do you get to hear how the good stories turn out? The people that go on and live and thrive because of the work that you do? Do you hear about enough of that to balance out the sadness of what you also must experience? Ping Lindsay on IG with any questions you have after listening to this episode. @LindsaysCloud CHEERS TO OUR REAL LIFE LIFESAVER!

Dr Kim joined us to talk about the use of the ViewRay MRIdian for treatment of pancreatic cancer at Hoag Hospital. Dr Kim explains that the tumor needs to be hit with high energy x-ray beams. To be able to hit the tumor you need to be able to see the tumor. Its that simple. This is the only machine that uses MRI imaging to visualize the tumor. Tumors move with each breath and this machine allows the tracking of the tumor in real time allowing them to be precise in delivering treatment. Retired Police Captain Robert Sweaza and his wife, Kristen, are my guests in Part Two of Mental Illness with Police Officers, where we discuss mental illness and how it relates to law enforcement officers. Kristen and Robert are the founders of Blue Wives Matter, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support for the families of fallen law enforcement officers. In this conversation, we talk about the particular challenges of mental health and suicide prevention education in law enforcement, the mental health stigma as it relates to first responders, and what goes into supporting the families of fallen officers. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help About Blue Wives Matter: Blue Wives Matter was founded in 2017 after the untimely death of Fountain Valley California Police Officer Rick Nilos. Officer Rick Nilos dedicated his life to helping others, as a police officer and a US Marine. It was in his death that Blue Wives Matter became inspired to help the families who are left behind. It is our mission to provide the support that families need in their time of loss and grief. We support families no matter the cause of death. Blue Wives Matter has provided support to over 100 widows and widowers. Support has been provided financially and emotionally. This year we plan to offer mental health grants for those in need while dealing with grief. Blue Wives Matter also honors the children of officers who have died through the Patches of Honor Program. Each month, these children receive police patches in the mail. Patches are donated from agencies and officers all over the world. As the children build their patch collection, they feel connected to the law enforcement community. Professional Certified Coach Michelle Ahnang knows very well how not allowing yourself to grieve can hurt you far after you've lost a loved one to suicide. 15 years ago, Michelle's husband killed himself. Their family decided not to tell people the truth about his death for some time, which made Michelle's healing process long and arduous. In this episode, she talks to Hope Out of the Darkness about the words that got her attention and helped her decide to get herself well, then turn her experience into a platform to help others with their own mental health challenges. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help About Michelle: Success is a strange thing. It's never a linear path, but a collection of events and our reactions to them. What we do with what we are presented is up to us. It makes sense then that our success is also up to us. My path has not been a linear one, as so many of us have experienced. Growing up with emotional abuse in a constrictive house my sense of worth and worthiness were eroded, obscuring my identity. I learned that in order to be safe, I must become invisible and silent. I lived by others' expectations, never realizing my own. I remained this way into adulthood, my marriage and new motherhood. But then the unthinkable happened. My husband of 12 years, my best friend, died by suicide. With two young children to look after, I shifted into survival mode without ever processing my own grief, confusion and anger. Meanwhile, my husband's suicide lingered over me, the stigma stripping me of my ability to speak the truth of both him and what happened. I remained shame-driven. Climbing out of silence. I lived that way for over ten years, until I was no longer able to carry this backpack of shame and guilt and silence. I was forced to confront everything--my childhood, my husband's death, and my identity as a widow, all while raising my two beautiful children alone. I started going to therapy and began the hard work of healing and discovering who I was. I learned that my voice was stronger than silence and that I was more than the singular events that brought me to this place. The true me. It's from these experiences that my coaching practice was born. Throughout my healing and discovery process, I learned what it meant to guide others living with mental health challenges, and the lethal impact of stigma and silence. This is what I do: I help strip the silence, shatter the stigma, and get you on the path to becoming who you truly are. I work to support families faced with mental health challenges, individuals who are ready to stop their own cycle of self-sabotage, and professionals struggling with balance. This is my mission. I hold a BA in Psychology from York University, am a Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC). I am Mental Health First Aid certified through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. I am also trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Training for Emotional Resilience, and am an active public speaker and educator. I'm an avid lover of dance, reading and general decompression. My sons, Eric and Zack, are my world, although they love to roll their eyes at me, particularly when I'm dancing. Host: Shell Pavlis Guest: Jennifer Sandowsky Jennifer Sandowsky literally wrote the book on exploring the role of unresolved emotions so that we can shine the light of forgiveness on ourselves to liberate us from the victim inside. In this candid interview, she highlights the importance of advocating for yourself, understanding all courses of available treatment, and using a tool like her Mental Health Life Report. Jennifer gives great advice on how to have an open dialogue with your health professionals and daily practices for your own empowerment to heal. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help Jennifer Sandowsky grew up in New Jersey with a mother, brother, and aunt who all had schizophrenia. An extremely chaotic upbringing, along with frequent disputes with her Father, was followed by the tragic deaths of her closest friend at the age of 14, "when she was hit by a car and dragged to her death in front of Jennifer," and the murder of her grandfather at the age of 16. She was also expelled from high school and placed in a facility for "emotionally troubled youngsters." Years later, her life improved, and Jennifer graduated from college with a B.A. in Psychology, then went on to have a long career in pharmaceutical sales, selling both antidepressants and antipsychotics. Through Forgiveness Jennifer and her father have established a very close and loving relationship. Jennifer approaches mental health through "journeys" of oneself in ordinary life events that we can all connect to, yet in a casual and inviting manner. Unlike other systems that offer a more linear or scientific view, this approach helps to break down the “good, bad, and ugly” within us all. Newport Beach history is littered with fun, weird, amazing and/or mindboggling stories that are too thin to make into an entire episode, but too good to pass up. In "Newport Nuggets: Three Short Stories Lost to History," we explores a trio of tales from the early part of the 20th Century: Newport Beach's first doctor and the Spanish Flu pandemic. The summer camp on Little Balboa Island for orphans and children whose parents couldn't take care or them. The popular retreat lasted 30 years (1914-1944).The would-be (and massive) religious colony, Melrose Mesa, planned for the West Newport bluffs near present-day Hoag Hospital. And why it didn't have a prayer at succeeding.

Suicide, attempted suicide, and purposeful self-harm have all increased as a result of this increase in social media use, particularly among adolescents. According to several studies, greater use and exposure to social media platforms predicts an increased likelihood of undesirable consequences such as bullying and may lead to suicide. Here are some suggestions for using social media in a healthy and productive manner. Follow people and things that bring you joy. Unfollow unhealthy accounts. Support and connect with others in real life. Reduce your screen time. Take an extended break away from social media when needed. Marie Cradle joins this episode of Hope Out of the Darkness to talk about the dangers of social media and offers tips and tricks on how to become more conscious of when you're starting to develop toxic and potentially harmful behaviour. She shares some of her favorite self-care practices and urges people to design their own self-care routine, both on and off line, to help improve their mental health. Marie also shares the various challenges of trying to reach people through social media and how AFSP has found success by using social media marketing. AFSP is working to not only bring awareness to suicide prevention, but also reach people who might be in need and don't know where to look. 00:00 Introduction 1:15 How did you get involved with AFSP? 3:25 What's your social media background? 6:18 The challenges of reaching those at risk 8:57 How to use social media in a healthy way 15:05 Upcoming AFSP programs 19:40 Suicide prevention hashtags 24:02 AFSP top Events 25:11 What is the Out of the Darkness Walk 32:57 Your go to suide prevention and mental health resources 35:29 Listener Question Connect with Shell Pavlis: American Foundation of Suicide Prevention OC Board Member, AFSP Give Back Partner Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell Connect with our Guest: Marie Cradle, America Foundation of Suicide Prevention, OC Board Member cradlewrites@gmail.com marinarena.com IG: @marinarena_web https://afsp.org/chapter/orange-county https://bewelloc.org/ Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental-health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/ Let's Stop Suicide. Chapters are energized by families and friends who have lost loved ones to suicide, vulnerable persons, mental health professionals, clergy, educators, students, community/business leaders, and many others. Each year, over 45,000 Americans die by suicide, averaging 123 suicides each day. According to a 2014 assessment, despite the high risk of suicide in the United States, around 40% of people with mental illnesses do not seek medical help. One of the main reasons why people don't seek help, according to researchers, is stigma. Suicide is a sensitive subject that should be handled with care and respect. It's not simply about being politically correct. Whether we're having a conversation, talking to someone who has lived experience, or writing about the problem in a professional situation. It all boils down to saving lives. As our knowledge and awareness of suicide grows, so must our approach to discussing it. To help us be more aware of our own language choices, Nancy discusses the power of a solid support system and surrounding yourself with loved ones, the correct terms those around you can use to better communicate and help, what not to say and where to find suicide prevention resources. 00:00 Introduction 2:34 The language of suicide prevention 5:18 Using the correct terms when speaking about suicide prevention 7:33 The power of a solid support system 10:46 Ways to show support 12:27 What not to say 16:30 being the chapter chair of AFSP 19:44 Duck Duck Hope 23:34 Suicide prevention resources 25:57 Listener question 27:27 Self tips for loss survivors Connect with Shell Pavlis: AFSP Volunteer, Advocate, Event Sponsor, Give Back Partner Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell Connect with our Guest: Nancy Cooper, America Foundation of Suicide Prevention, OC Chapter Chair ncooper1011@gmail.com https://afsp.org/chapter/orange-county https://bewelloc.org/ Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental-health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/ Let's Stop Suicide. Daniel Headrick, MD, is the medical director and owner of Tres Vistas Recovery in San Juan Capistrano, California. Before opening Tres Vistas Recovery, Dr. Headrick served for eight years as the medical director at Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, California, and eleven years as the Medical Director of Hoag Hospital’s Chemical Dependency Center in Newport Beach, California. Dr. Headrick – known by his patients as Dr. Dan - joins Hilary and Jason this week on Let The Journey Begin to discuss his own personal experiences with recovery. Dr. Headrick knew from an early age that he wanted to be a doctor and later achieved that very goal. While working in the medical field, things were going very well. Sports cars, a boat, beautiful women, you name it, Dr. Headrick had it. But little did people realize, Dr. Headrick had a whole separate life outside of his practice that involved drinking and drug use due to his own feelings of unworthiness. His usage even took him to the point of overdosing, ending up in his own emergency room, and later contemplating suicide, which ultimately was the determining factor in his seeking treatment. Today, after 35 years of sobriety, Dr. Headrick uses his own experiences as an addict to help thousands of individuals achieve their own sobriety. In talking with Hilary and Jason, Dr. Headrick gives insight as to why nutrition is so important in the quest for sobriety as well as picturing oneself sober by setting a target, whatever that picture of sobriety looks like to you. Today's conversation is with Gail Wetzler Gail currently owns an integrative physical therapy practice in Denver, Colorado, where they treat orthopedic, fascial/muscular/soft tissue, neurologic, pain, respiratory, digestive, mTBI and women's and men's health issues. During one of her earlier speaking engagements for thew Upledger Institute ( Beyond the Dura), she met Jean Pierre Barral DO, who inspired the importance of anatomy, the ability to listen to the body and the specificity of tissue dialogue in manual therapy techniques. She is currently part of the Research Team for the Upledger Foundation for their recent studies on Post Concussion Recovery She currently teaches for the Women's Health Section of the APTA "Gynecological Visceral Manipulation"Gail earned her Diplomate from the Barral Institute in 2005. She earned her Equine Diplomate in Osteopathy from Vluggen Institute of Equine Osteopathy in 2009 and she earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rosalind Franklin University, Chicago, in 2013.For the upcoming Symposium Gail spoke about, please visit the site belowhttp://shop.iahe.com/Product-List/Visceral-Manipulation-Products/Online-Video-Barral-Institute-SymposiumFor More information on Gail, visit https://www.iahp.com/GailWetzler/As always, we hope you enjoy the show. “Today’s teens and parents need to be armed with a ‘tool box’ of practical solutions, and step-by-step instructions on how to use them, to meet the challenges they will all predictably face.” Jerry Weichman, Ph.D., is a young clinical psychologist and adolescent specialist. His practice at Hoag Neurosciences Institute in Newport Beach, California helps teens deal with parents, teachers, friends and academic pressure, communicating with them in a way they understand to successfully handle the social drama of high school. Parents respond well to his directive approach, gaining a far deeper understanding of adolescent issues. Dr. Weichman’s book, How to Deal, is a survival guide for high school teens, sharing his personal struggles as a teen and young adult to teach teens how to deal with stress, elevate their mood and feel better… “even when things really suck.” His popular speeches, lectures and seminars have presented assemblies of students, teachers, parents and administrators with a valuable window on how today’s teens successfully overcome the all too predictable, and painful, trials and tribulations of growing up, from meeting parental academic expectations to walking away from drugs and other self-destructive behavior. Jerry Weichman grew up without a right foot, dealing with family problems and learning to walk with a prosthetic leg, being teased, developing body image issues, having social acceptance problems in school, experiencing lack of motivation, academic problems and depression. Dr. Weichman describes in detail his high school transformation which enabled him to elevate his mood, become more optimistic, foster more intrinsic motivation, receive academic and athletic honors in high school, play Division I football in college, receive academic awards in college and earn his Ph.D. at the early age of 26. “Dr. Jerry”, as his patients and their parents call him, provides concrete, applicable tools for teen problems and explains how to use them to become a self-reliant person. He bridges modern-age adolescent lingo, concepts and technology, and clinical knowledge, in an approach that resonates with teens. Dr. Jerry speaks at many schools, has worked as an intern with teens as a school psychologist in middle and high schools, counseled teens at community counseling centers and works with teens exclusively in private practice. He is on staff at Hoag Hospital. The relevance of his youth and experiences, combined with the directive approach he uses, connects teens and parents extremely effectively, teaching them better ways to cope with the challenges of growing up. A popular and well respected media resource, Dr. Jerry has been interviewed by the New York Times, Washington Post and LA Times and has been asked to appear on major networks, ABC and Fox. He also sits on the Advisory Board for the Crisis Text Line, a subsidiary of DoSomething.org and is a regular contributing expert at award winning parenting website KidsInTheHouse.com.
