After a long hiatus, Diversity University returns with a project-based book review episode for their IB Language and Literature class! This episode only includes Faith and Danielle as they decided to use their podcast as a medium to present their thoughts on They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera and When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, respectively. We are accompanied by Ms. Duarte, our IB Lang and Lit teacher, where she offers her witty and savage insight and snobby book opinions. In this episode, we have a lowkey discussion amongst the four of us on our thoughts and opinions on representation in media. The media has a strong grasp on how the public views pop culture, foreign affairs, politics, and more. Representation in media is not only a means of diversifying industries but also allowing minorities to reclaim their voices. To critically examine what we consume as a populace is necessary to fight misinformation and divisive thoughts. As teens living in the digital age, we should refrain from maintaining an insular mindset. Disclaimer: This episode is not a comprehensive thinkpiece or analysis of representation in media. The intention of this episode is to air out our perspectives to share with our small audience. This June, Taylor Colbert alongside her friends organized a march at Marietta Square in response to the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and the other victims of police brutality. George Floyd's death catalyzed the Black Lives Matter movement and the rest of America to protest against the state. In this episode, we explore the value of community organizing and the co-optation of different thoughts such as ACAB, reform, and abolition.
