California's Crossroads: John Duarte Talks Leadership, Agriculture, and the Future of the Golden State On a special Thanksgiving edition of the AgNet News Hour, host Nick Papagni, “The Ag Meter,” sat down with John Duarte—farmer, nursery leader, and former congressman—for a candid discussion about California's political climate, agricultural innovation, and the future of farming families across the state. The conversation, replayed as a “best of” segment, highlighted Duarte's belief that California is on the verge of a major shift—one driven by common sense, economic revitalization, and a renewed respect for the agricultural backbone of the state. A Call for Common Sense Leadership in California When asked whether California can “switch and get back to common sense,” Duarte didn't hesitate. Yes, it can. He emphasized that meaningful change is on the horizon, largely driven by everyday Californians who are tired of policies that push families, businesses, and young people out of the state. Duarte voiced strong support for candidates like Chad Blanco and Steve Hilton, stressing that whoever emerges from the primary will have his full backing. He believes the 2026 gubernatorial race will center around one theme: California is being left behind, even as the rest of the country surges ahead economically and environmentally. According to Duarte, America is already showing signs of powerful economic growth. Environmental progress and economic success don't have to be mutually exclusive, he argues. In his view, California's current policies have unnecessarily sacrificed jobs, infrastructure, and quality of life in the name of environmentalism—often without meaningful environmental gains to show for it. Meanwhile, families across the state are watching their children move to places like Tennessee, Georgia, and Oklahoma for opportunities California can no longer offer. Duarte believes that this exodus will eventually create enough pressure to push California toward more practical, future-focused leadership. Infrastructure, Water, and the High-Speed Rail Debate Duarte didn't hold back when discussing the state's long-criticized bullet train project—calling it the “bullet to the head train.” He contrasted the billions invested into the rail line with the massive impact that same funding could have had on drinking water systems, treatment facilities, and rural infrastructure. During his time in Congress, he said, the federal government poured $4 billion into the project. At even modest estimates, that money could have built dozens—if not hundreds—of essential water projects across California's farm-dependent regions. For Duarte, this is the clearest example of a state government that prioritizes symbolism over solutions. An “abundance-oriented society,” he argues, invests in the infrastructure that improves real lives: water storage, treatment, delivery, and the systems that keep agriculture thriving. He draws a distinction between what he calls the “lords of scarcity”—coastal elites who push restrictive policies—and the “champions of abundance”—farmers, energy producers, and working people who generate the food, power, and materials society depends on. And Duarte is clear: the champions of abundance are about to kick butt in California. A Conversation Between Colleagues and Friends After wrapping the interview, Papagni and co-host Lorrie Boyer reflected on their conversation with Duarte. Boyer praised him for his clarity and willingness to elaborate on complex issues—something listeners appreciate. Papagni agreed, adding that the Duarte family itself is remarkable. John's wife, Alexandra Duarte, is now running for office, continuing the family's commitment to public service and agricultural advocacy. Papagni highlighted John Duarte's accomplishments in the nursery industry, where he helped refine varieties of almond trees, table grapes, and trellis systems. Boyer wondered how someone even gets started in such an industry; Papagni explained that Duarte entered the nursery world in the 1990s and has spent decades experimenting, innovating, and anticipating the needs of future growers. One example: Duarte's ambition to bring avocado production to California's Central Valley—a bold move that could extend the state's avocado season and reshape a key market dominated by Southern California growers. Both hosts emphasized that agriculture is one of the most technologically advanced, forward-thinking industries in the world. Duarte's continual experimentation—sometimes successful, sometimes not—is part of what makes him and his nursery widely respected. Thanksgiving Reflections and the Farming Lifestyle As the show transitioned into its Thanksgiving morning segment, Papagni and Boyer shifted into a warm, lighthearted conversation about holiday traditions, cooking turkey, and the simple joys of family time. Papagni pictured farmers out checking their orchards and fields early in the day before heading home to celebrate—a familiar rhythm for agricultural families. Their playful banter ranged from turkey recipes to brisket, to the famous Santa Maria tri-tip, to the challenge of feeding large groups with slow-cooked meats. It provided a relatable, personal counterbalance to the more serious political discussions earlier in the program. The hosts closed by previewing an upcoming “best of” interview with Stuart Woolf, a well-known Westside Fresno grower who is experimenting with agave as a low-water crop that could transform the region into an agave—and potentially tequila—hub.
Alé Duarte, somatic therapist and creator of KidSoma joins me this week to explore how tuning into your child's natural rhythms can completely transform the way you understand their emotions and reactions. Together we unpack: - Why play isn't a break from learning, it is the learning. - What it means to help your child "complete a cycle" so their nervous system can settle and grow. - How "unfinished cycles" can leave kids dysregulated, impulsive, or anxious—and what parents can do to help their child complete these cycles in daily life. - Realistic ways to implement these strategies even when you're juggling busy schedules, time pressures, and the realities of everyday parenting. - Why slowing down and following your child's lead can actually make mornings smoother, transitions easier, and connection deeper. If you've ever wished you could understand what's happening underneath your child's big emotions and find a calmer rhythm for your entire family system, this conversation will change the way you see play, presence, and parenting. Welcome to ReImagining Liberty, a show about the emancipatory and cosmopolitan case for radical liberalism. I'm Aaron Ross Powell. It's still possible Trump succeeds in his project of authoritarian consolidation, but between the dramatic losses the GOP suffered in the elections on November 4th, the infighting in the conservative coalition, and the Epstein scandal, the prospects for that consolidation are looking more remote. All this makes the "How do we rebuild when Trump is behind us?" question feel less like a pipe dream. Which is why I was so happy to see my friends at The UnPopulist launch their new "Reconstruction Agenda" project, headed by frequent ReImagining Liberty guest Andy Craig. Andy is mapping out what that reconstruction should look like, and what reforms present the best opportunities to strengthen and rebuild the institutions of liberal democracy. Today's episode is about the Constitution. It's a clear-eyed assessment of the assaults on it by the Trump administration, and a deep discussion of how we should think about constitutional interpretation and constitutional defense. Things aren't good. There's no denying that. But things also perhaps aren't as bad, at least not yet, as the most shrill of the doomers insist. To dig into all this, I'm joined by Evan Bernick. He's a law professor at Northern Illinois University and has been one of the most thoughtful, persistent, and effective critics of the risible scholarship the Trump administration is using to justify its assault on birthright citizenship.Produced by Landry Ayres. The future of liberalism depends upon the coalitions liberals can build, both to defend institutions now and to reform them when the time comes. As my friend, and past ReImagining Liberty guest, Jason Kuznicki says, "The future is a conversation." So today I've brought on two smart liberals, with very different ideas about what liberalism means in practice, for a conversation about common ground.Matthew McManus is an assistant professor at Spelman College, author of The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism, and frequent ReImagining Liberty guest. Matt Zwolinski is a first time ReImagining Liberty guest, an omission I'm thrilled to rectify. He's a professor of philosophy at the University of San Diego, co-author of The Individualists: Radicals, Reactionaries, and the Struggle for the Soul of Libertarianism, and founder of the seminal—but now sadly defunct—blog Bleeding Heart Libertarians. This episode is prompted by a review Zwolinski wrote of McManus's book, a review that noted their shared values and dug into why, in each of their cases, those values led them to quite distinct policy conclusions. And that's our topic for today. It's a conversation about agreement, disagreement, and how to have productive conversations about liberalism.Produced by Landry Ayres. Podcast art by Sergio R. M. Duarte. Music by Kevin MacLeod.
Based On True Crime Stories - "Cold Case Investigators Series" by Merrill VaughanFeatured Book - The Happy Paperhanger" For over five years, an individual has been writing checks that do not have sufficient funds in the accounts. He is able to obtain state driver's licenses that he uses to open checking accounts with just enough money to keep the accounts open. He does not really steal other people's identification; he just makes up the names that he uses. For over five years, he has cost communities in Southern California thousands of dollars and has caused police departments to run in circles trying to catch him. That is, until one police department calls in the Cold Case Investigators to assist them. It is through a serious mistake on the part of the check writer that he is finally caught by one of the private investigators.Born in 1949, Merrill Vaughan spent his formative years in Monrovia and Duarte, California. He graduated from Duarte High School in 1967 and went on to attend Pasadena City College and Citrus Junior College, earning his degree in 1971. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on November 26, 1971, serving at various stateside bases and completing multiple overseas assignments in Thailand, Greece, Hawaii, Germany, Denmark, and Honduras. Merrill retired in June 1993 and transitioned to work with the State of Wyoming's Human Resources Division for three years.Despite facing disabilities that prevented him from returning to work, Merrill remained actively involved with several veterans organizations until his move to New Hampshire in 2004. In his new community of Pittsfield, he engaged in local governance, serving on committees such as the Budget Committee, Master Plan Committee, and as Chair of the Ethics Committee. In 2007, he was appointed as the town representative to the Concord Regional CrimeLine, a position he still holds. Additionally, Merrill became a substitute teacher at the local middle and high school, teaching various subjects until his retirement in 2020. He maintains connections with several former students. In 2008, Merrill pursued a lifelong dream by enrolling at Franklin Pierce University, where he graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies. He now serves on the Franklin Pierce University Alumni Board of Directors. It was during his teaching career that Merrill began jotting down ideas for a potential short story. Today things get particularly radical, with an introduction to left market anarchism. I'm joined by Zak Woodman, host of the Mutual Exchange Radio podcast from the Center for a Stateless Society. We talk about whether we need a state at all, the dangers a powerful government poses, even if its values are arguably good ones, and why the aims of the left are better advanced through free markets than state control of the economy. We end with a call to take anarchist ideas seriously, even if you don't ultimately accept them, because they contain lessons for how to navigate and respond to our contemporary authoritarian moment.Produced by Landry Ayres. In today's episode, leading experts across oncology specialties previewed the key studies and data they are most anticipating ahead of the 2025 ESMO Congress. Dana M. Chase, MD, a professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at UCLA, discussed her excitement to see findings from a phase 1 trial (NCT05403554) investigating NI-1801 in patients with heavily pretreated, mesothelin-expressing platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer. Premal H. Thaker, MD, MS, the David G. and Lynn Mutch Distinguished Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and director of Gynecologic Oncology Clinical Research at Siteman Cancer Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, discussed the anticipation for findings from a multi-omic analysis of the phase 3 AtTEnd/ENGOT-EN7 trial (NCT03603184) of atezolizumab in patients with endometrial cancer and data demonstrating that the WES-derived Aneuploidy Score may identify patients with mismatch repair–deficient endometrial cancer who derive reduced benefit from immunotherapy. Zev Wainberg, MD, the Estelle, Abe, and Marjorie Sanders Chair in Cancer Research at UCLA, shared his anticipation for new data in gastrointestinal oncology, particularly the overall survival results from the phase 3 MATTERHORN trial (NCT04592913) of durvalumab plus fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin, and docetaxel in patients with resectable gastric and gastroesophageal cancer, which are expected to provide pivotal updates following previously reported event-free survival outcomes. Sagus Sampath, MD, an associate clinical professor and medical director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at City of Hope in Duarte, California, highlighted the phase 2 NorthStar trial (NCT03410043) evaluating osimertinib (Tagrisso) with or without local consolidative therapy in patients with metastatic EGFR-mutated non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The October 3 edition of the AgNet News Hour featured a passionate interview with Alexandra Duarte, a farmer, mother of four, and candidate for California's Fourth State Senate District. Hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill dug into Duarte's background, her vision for California agriculture, and her fight against policies she says are driving family farmers out of business. Duarte, who farms with her family in Stanislaus and El Dorado Counties, said her decision to run for office came from a desire to stop what she calls the “liberal policy agenda that's devastating us.” She credited her husband, Congressman John Duarte, with encouraging her to step into politics while their children continue managing the family nursery. “I can be that middle gap in Sacramento, a voice of common sense,” Duarte told listeners. At the heart of her campaign are water, regulations, and rural representation. Duarte insisted California does not have a water shortage, but a “Sacramento problem” created by policy failures. She called for dredging rivers and canals, building reservoirs, and increasing groundwater recharge to end manmade scarcity. “We live next to the tallest watershed in the world. We do not have a water issue,” she said. Duarte also blasted Proposition 50, warning that it would gerrymander rural voices out of federal representation. “If Prop 50 passes, the Valley loses its ability to fight in Washington,” she cautioned. On regulations, Duarte gave concrete examples of state overreach, including new laws requiring third-party certification for ranch gates and added costs for waste disposal in rural counties. “So many regulations seem okay, but they're not,” she said. “They pile up until it's impossible for farmers and small businesses to survive.” The conversation also touched on predators threatening livestock, the struggles of the trucking industry, and the importance of youth ag programs like FFA. Duarte said her mission is generational: “We want to hand the farm down to our children. All food grown in America is safe to eat, and American-grown food is the best thing we can do for our families.” For listeners, the message was clear: Duarte is campaigning on common sense, farm-first policies, and restoring California's agricultural strength. The September 29 edition of the AgNet News Hour kicked off the week with a deep dive into the future of California agriculture. Hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill sat down with John Duarte, president of Duarte Nurseries, for a conversation that blended innovation, new crops, and urgent political warnings. Duarte, whose family nursery dates back to 1989, explained how forward thinking has kept the business at the cutting edge. From pioneering virus-free grapevines to advancing clonal rootstocks for almonds and pistachios, Duarte has made science the foundation of orchard success. He revealed that Duarte's new Yorazani almond variety has broken records, producing 2,700 pounds per acre in just 36 months. “It resets the economics of almond growing,” Duarte told listeners, stressing that productivity is the key to surviving low nut prices. The nursery's work doesn't stop with almonds. Duarte said their pistachio vigor clonal rootstock has shown a 30% improvement over seedlings in long-term trials. Looking ahead, he is most excited about a new frontier: avocados in the Central Valley. With breakthroughs in micropropagation, Duarte expects to deliver widely available avocado trees to California growers by 2027. “Consumers are telling us they want avocados — and the Valley can deliver,” he said. But Duarte's optimism was tempered by political concern. He called Proposition 50 a direct threat to Central Valley farmers, warning that the measure would gerrymander rural communities out of fair representation. “If Prop 50 passes, the Valley loses its voice in Washington,” he said, urging farmers and listeners to mobilize against it. Duarte also tied California's farm challenges to the larger issue of food security. With a $32 billion agricultural trade deficit, he argued that relying on imports makes the U.S. vulnerable. “Working families are the ones paying the price,” Duarte said, noting that higher costs and lower quality imports hurt everyday Californians most. From almonds and pistachios to the promise of Central Valley avocados, Duarte continues to bring solutions at a time when agriculture needs them most. Farmers left this episode with both new ideas and a clear warning: the future of California farming depends on innovation and political engagement.
