Nuclear energy is back — and this time, the momentum may be here to stay. In this episode of The POWER Podcast, Executive Editor Aaron Larson sits down with Dagmar Thien, who manages conventional island equipment for nuclear power plants at Siemens Energy, to explore what's driving the industry's renewed optimism and how the company is positioning itself at the center of the action. Thien, a physicist with two decades at Siemens Energy, breaks down the forces fueling the nuclear resurgence: surging global electricity demand, the need for reliable baseload power to back up intermittent renewables, and nuclear's strong climate credentials as a low-lifecycle-emission energy source. The explosive growth of data centers, which require uninterrupted power around the clock, has added particular urgency. The conversation spans the full spectrum of reactor technology — from gigawatt-scale plants that benefit from economies of scale, to small modular reactors (SMRs) promising faster, cheaper deployment through factory standardization, to Generation IV designs like high-temperature gas-cooled and molten salt reactors that could unlock industrial heat applications beyond electricity. Thien explains how Siemens Energy's broad turbine portfolio allows it to support virtually any reactor type. She highlights the value of whole-system optimization — collaborating with reactor developers to find the best overall plant performance rather than optimizing each side independently. The episode also covers the critical but often overlooked work of lifetime extension and modernization. With some U.S. plants pursuing 80-year operating licenses, upgrading turbines, generators, and control systems is essential. Thien discusses the Palisades Nuclear Generating Station — a landmark example of a decommissioned plant being brought back online — and the complex process of managing obsolescence in safety-qualified instrumentation and control systems used in roughly 23% of the world's reactors. Regulatory challenges, international harmonization efforts between the U.S., UK, and Canada, and the growing role of nuclear heat for industrial decarbonization round out a wide-ranging discussion on where the industry is headed next.

Sacramento County's District Attorney Thien Ho's book, The People vs. the Golden State Killer, is highly recommended for readers interested in true crime, legal history, and stories of human resilience. As the lead prosecutor in the case, Ho provides an "insider" account that differs significantly from previous narratives about Joseph DeAngelo. This is the first official record of the investigation, capture, and prosecution of the Golden State Killer written by the lead prosecutor. Unlike many true-crime books that sensationalize the killer, Ho's narrative centers on the survivors and the law enforcement teams who pursued justice for over 30 years. Ho's book includes hundreds of new facts, insights into interrogation room interactions, and behind-the-scenes legal strategies that were never released to the public. It also features the authorized perspectives of survivors who turned their trauma into activism, offering a powerful testament to the "resiliency of the human spirit". Ho also shares his own story as a Vietnamese refugee who arrived in America knowing no English and eventually became one of only ten Asian American district attorneys in the country. A portion of the proceeds from the book goes toward Phyllis's Garden, a nonprofit founded by a Golden State Killer survivor to support victims' rights.

We've arrived at the bitter end. Torie and returning special guests Chelsey Morin and Thien-Y Hoang make their final trip to the 50 shades of garbage dump searching for anything of substance in the final installment of this trash film trilogy. Alas, 50 SHADES FREED proves the third time is not the charm. Sulky sub Anastasia Steele and Dom daddy Christian Grey tie the knot (figuratively, not literally, this time). Their marital bliss is soon interrupted by Ana's former misogynist boss, Jack, and his desire for vengeance against Christian, which still doesn't make sense, as well as a certain unplanned you-know-what that drives a wedge between Ana and Christian, who proves, even after three insufferable movies, that he remains an unhinged, narcissistic a**hole. What ensues is two hours of blatant misogyny, buttplug pleasures, adventures on the Aspen club scene, painfully asinine car chases, a kidnapping of Rita Ora, a profoundly obnoxious performance of ”Maybe I'm Amazed,” and the confounding absence of a prenup. And through it all, like some absurd monument to early 00s mallboi masculinity, are Christian's cherished pair of Hollister Men's jeans.

If you have been a reader of MinistryWatch over the years, you probably know about GRACE. GRACE is an acronym that stands for Godly Response to Abuse in Christian Environments. GRACE is also a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing, addressing, and responding to abuse within Christian institutions. Founded to support survivors and promote accountability, GRACE provides independent investigations, consulting, training, and educational resources for churches, schools, ministries, and nonprofit organizations. Its work emphasizes trauma-informed care, best practices for safeguarding, and ethical leadership. By combining professional expertise with a survivor-centered approach, GRACE seeks to help Christian organizations confront abuse honestly, care well for victims, and create safer environments that reflect integrity, transparency, and respect for human dignity. We have used GRACE resources often in our work here at MinistryWatch. Now, GRACE has a new president. The former president, Pete Singer, who has been a guest of this program, died last May, and after a nationwide search, the group named a new president, Laura Thien, who is my guest today. Laura Thien brings more than eighteen years of service to survivors of child abuse, sexual assault, and other trauma—experience that spans work in adoptions, clinical practice, and victim advocacy, and non-profit Board leadership. For many years, she provided support and treatment for survivors of sexual trauma at Julie Valentine Center, a community-based sexual trauma recovery center and CAC (Child Advocacy Center) in Greenville, SC. Laura has a distinguished history of non-profit board leadership, having served as Chairperson for the board of directors for GRACE, Julie Valentine Center, and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office Citizens' Advisory Board. She has also served on the board of directors of the South Carolina Network of Child Advocacy Centers. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh.

We are so delighted to have graphic novelist Thien Pham on this episode. We discovered his book Family Style thanks to one of our kids and it turned out to be a book that us grownups love too. Thien shares how he finally came to write his book after so many years of wanting to tell his family's story, the through line of food and memory, and the impressiveness of his parents in building a whole new life by an age at which Thien himself was still playing video games. Plus we talk about the heartbreak of assimilation, his stint as a food critic comic artist, and the incredible state of school lunchrooms today. Definitely pick up a copy of Family Style for your middle grade readers or anyone curious about immigrant stories in a wonderfully accessible graphic novel.
Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho joins us this week to discuss his terrific new book chronicling his role prosecuting the elusive Golden State Killer. We talk about how his upbringing fleeing Communism in Vietnam fuels his passion for seeking justice for crime victims, the many challenges in prosecuting Joseph DeAngelo, and why it was so important for him to focus the book on the victims and loved ones left behind, rather than sensationalizing the killer.
Torie and special guests Chelsey Morin and Thien-Y Hoang return to the 50 Shades of Grey garbage dump for the second installment in this stinking landfill of a film franchise, 50 SHADES DARKER. Don't bother to bring a shovel. After being broken up for 2.5 seconds, newly deflowered Anastasia Steele and hunky millionaire Dom Christian Grey rekindle their love and get into a full-on relationship. As their "intimacy" grows, Anastasia learns more about Christian's dark past and meets some of the (many) skeletons in his closet. What ensues is two hours of even more sociopathic behavior, somewhat less sexy "S&M" sex scenes, a dash of gun violence, a lavish masked ball fundraiser, a pair of Ben Wa balls, even more Hollister men's jeans, poor restaurant etiquette, workplace sexual harassment, and more. We also meet a less-than-colorful cast of new characters, including Christian's former Mommy Dom "Mrs. Robinson," played by Kim Basinger, Anna's misogynistic new boss, Jack Hyde, and one of Christian's former pets/hostages, Leila.
Thien Ho, the current district attorney of Sacramento County, delivers the first official account of the investigation, capture and prosecution of Joseph DeAngelo, one of America's most notorious serial predators. Known by many chilling names over the years, including the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Original Nightstalker, and finally the Golden State Killer, DeAngelo terrorized California communities for more than a decade—and then disappeared without a trace for more than 30 years. It's a tale Ho recounts in his new book The People vs. the Golden State Killer, from Third State Books. As the lead prosecutor on the case, Ho recounts the exhilarating and harrowing experience of bringing a cold-case killer to justice and putting him behind bars for life. Rather than focusing solely on the criminal and the crimes, Ho's narrative centers the dedicated law-enforcement teams who never gave up their pursuit, and the courageous survivors of the GSK's crimes who fought to heal and regain control of their lives. Ho has hundreds of never-before-revealed details and firsthand insights, and this is the first time the public hears directly from the lead prosecutor who helped close the case. A portion of the book's proceeds will benefit Phyllis's Garden, a nonprofit that honors a GSK survivor and champions victims' rights. Ho, who comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs for a discussion with award-winning journalist Dion Lim, will also share his compelling personal story: a Vietnamese refugee whose family fled Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War; he arrived in the United States knowing no English. He rose from being an intern to being elected Sacramento County district attorney in 2022, becoming one of only 10 Asian American district attorneys out of 2,400 nationwide. Welcome back, cinephiles and perverts, and welcome to Season Two of Sex in the Cinema!!! To kick off Season Two, Torie is joined by Angelenos and expert hate-watchers Chelsey Morin and Thien-Y Hoang to demolish the cultural phenomenon that was the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy. From its humble beginnings in a Twilight fanfiction forum, to the published printed page, all the way to the silver screen, this gross disservice to the kink community turned on the world. For SITC's Season Two Premiere, we're tackling the first installment of the trilogy, 50 SHADES OF GREY. Released in 2015 and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (wife of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, mind you), this film launched the careers of usually good actors Dakota Johnson and Jaimie Dornan. Mousy brunette super-virgin Anastasia Steele's simple life turns upside down when she meets sexy billionaire (and apparent Never Nude), Christian Grey. Anastasia soon finds out Christian doesn't do relationships, but he does enjoy “various physical pursuits.” Namely, kidnapping women and coercing them into dom/sub relationships of very questionable ethics. What ensues is two hours of sociopathic behavior, painful lack of chemistry, horrifically awful dialogue, NDAs and contracts, too many needle drops, countless glasses of unconsumed white wine, mostly vanilla sex, an apparent proclivity for Hollister men's jeans, a dusting of taboo slap & tickle, one impressive den of iniquity set, and wayyyyyy too many red flags. So bust out those handcuffs and settle in for the long haul because, in the words of Christian Grey, there's “no escaping now…”
New York Times investigation finds loopholes in new state regulations. Lead prosecutor in the trial and conviction of Joseph DeAngelo releases new book. Finally, an overview of what SNAP benefits are and their vulnerability to federal changes.
In The People vs. the Golden State Killer, Thien Ho, the current District Attorney of Sacramento, recounts his harrowing and exhilarating experience as the lead prosecutor responsible for capturing and prosecuting Joseph DeAngelo. Referred to at various times by law enforcement and the media as the Visalia Ransacker, the East Bay Rapist, the Original Nightstalker, and finally the Golden State Killer, DeAngelo, a former policeman, is widely considered “one of the most notorious serial predators in American history.”Ho's book is the first official account of how the Golden State Killer was apprehended and put behind bars for life. Ho led an elite team of law enforcement from six California prosecutor's offices, using a newly developed tool known as “investigative genetic genealogy” to connect DeAngelo to multiple cold cases stretching back nearly a half century. Many previous narratives about DeAngelo, including two bestselling books and multiple documentaries, focused largely on the killer and his heinous crimes. This book not only provides hundreds of facts and details never revealed to the public about the Golden State Killer's crimes, it also presents the real-life story of the people who worked tirelessly to bring DeAngelo to justice. It also offers the unprecedented authorized perspective of three survivors of DeAngelo's crimes who courageously turned their pain into empowerment and activism. A portion of the book's proceeds will be donated both by the author and Third State Books to Phyllis's Garden, a nonprofit advocating for victims' rights begun in honor of a GSK survivor. The People vs. the Golden State Killer also recounts Ho's fascinating personal journey, from escaping communist Vietnam with his family as a child to working his way up from an internship to an elite homicide division and eventually becoming one of only ten Asian American district attorneys out of 2,400 nationwide.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Imagine fleeing a war as a child, arriving in America unable to speak the language — and decades later, becoming the prosecutor who takes down one of the nation's most infamous serial killers. That's the real-life journey of Thien Ho, Sacramento County's District Attorney and author of The People vs. The Golden State Killer. In this Hidden Killers exclusive, Tony Brueski sits down with Ho to unpack the extraordinary story behind both the man and the case: the trauma that drove him, the promise he made to a survivor, and the moment he finally saw justice done. Ho shares never-before-heard insights into Joseph James DeAngelo's double life — a police officer by day, a sadistic predator by night — and explains how the prosecution dismantled his decades-long facade of control. He also opens up about his personal mission to shift true crime's focus away from the monster and toward the heroes: the survivors and investigators who never stopped fighting. It's a conversation about justice, redemption, and the moral courage it takes to stand in the face of real evil — and win. #ThienHo #GoldenStateKiller #JosephDeAngelo #HiddenKillers #TrueCrimeToday #JusticeServed #ColdCase #SurvivorVoices #DNAJustice #EastAreaRapist Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? For more than 40 years, the man now known as the Golden State Killer stalked California — breaking into homes, raping, murdering, and then vanishing into the night. He was a ghost who terrorized families from Sacramento to Santa Barbara — until one relentless prosecutor finally helped end his reign of fear. In this episode, Tony Brueski sits down with Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, the man who personally led the prosecution that put Joseph James DeAngelo behind bars for life. Ho's new book, The People vs. The Golden State Killer, pulls back the curtain on the real investigation — from the DNA breakthrough that cracked the case wide open to the survivors who refused to stay silent. When Joseph DeAngelo — the Golden State Killer — was finally unmasked in 2018, the world saw an old man slumped in a wheelchair. But according to Sacramento DA Thien Ho, it was all an act. In this exclusive conversation, Tony Brueski goes behind the headlines with Ho, the man who stood across the courtroom from one of America's most elusive serial predators. From the whispered “crazy act” DeAngelo tried to pull in the interrogation room to the frail performance he staged in court, Ho explains how the prosecution saw through every layer of manipulation. But this story isn't about glorifying a killer — it's about the survivors. Ho shares how he centered their voices, the emotional weight of their impact statements, and the unforgettable moment one woman told DeAngelo, “I'm not afraid of you anymore.” The People vs. The Golden State Killer gives us the first insider look at the battle between truth and illusion — and how one prosecutor helped make history by exposing the evil hiding behind a mask of normalcy. #GoldenStateKiller #ThienHo #JosephDeAngelo #HiddenKillers #TrueCrimePodcast #Justice #Prosecution #DNAEvidence #EastAreaRapist #CrimeStories Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? This isn't a retelling of old headlines. It's the first inside account of what really happened in the courtroom, the strategies behind the scenes, and the human cost of justice decades in the making. You'll hear how DeAngelo faked insanity to manipulate investigators, the haunting promise Ho made to a survivor, and the moment victims stood up in court and told their attacker they weren't afraid anymore. This is the story of justice, perseverance, and the team that never stopped hunting a monster hiding in plain sight. #HiddenKillers #GoldenStateKiller #JosephDeAngelo #ThienHo #TrueCrimeToday #ColdCase #DNAJustice #EastAreaRapist #OriginalNightstalker #JusticeServed Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Welcome to Season 5, Episode 44! Our guest today is Thien Ho, the Sacramento District attorney and long time prosecutor. He's also the author of the upcoming book, The People vs. The Golden State Killer which will be published by Third State Books and releases on November 11th. This true crime memoir follows Thien's experience as the lead prosecutor on the case against Joseph DeAngelo, one of the most notorious serial killers of the 20th century. It covers never-before published details about the investigation, capture, and trial that put DeAngelo behind bars. At the same time, the book is a memoir that follows Thien's personal story escaping war-torn Vietnam as a young boy and working his way up the law enforcement system to becoming the lead prosecutor in the case. Ho has gone on to become the Sacramento District Attorney, one of only 10 API District Attorneys in the country (there are 2400 total DAs). We loved how the book also highlights the experiences of three key survivors of DeAngelo's crimes, something that other books on the Golden State Killer haven't done to any significant extent… and this gives power to the survivors. In fact, a portion of the book's proceeds will be donated both by the author and Third State Books to Phyllis's Garden, a nonprofit advocating for victims' rights begun in honor of a GSK survivor. True Crime Tuesday presents The People Vs. The Golden State Killer with Attorney/District Attorney of Sacremento/Author, Thien Ho! In The People vs. the Golden State Killer, Thien Ho, the current District Attorney of Sacramento, recounts his harrowing and exhilarating experience as the lead prosecutor responsible for capturing and prosecuting Joseph DeAngelo. Referred to at various times by law enforcement and the media as the Visalia Ransacker, the East Bay Rapist, the Original Nightstalker, and finally the Golden State Killer, DeAngelo, a former policeman, is widely considered “one of the most notorious serial predators in American history.” Ho's book is the first official account of how the Golden State Killer was apprehended and put behind bars for life. On Today's True Crime Tuesday, we talk to Thien Ho about how he and his family fled from Vietnam in the early 70's, and how he went from not even knowing English when he came to this country, to wanting to defend his fellow citizens from the worst of the worst! We talk about how he got the case of Joseph DeAngelo assigned to him, the challenges he had to overcome to get an indictment and then a conviction, and then justice for the victims that, for the first time in his career, he made a PROMISE that he would deliver a guilty verdict to!
