Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and I are book lovers and we've decided to do a monthly in-depth book discussion. Our 12th book is They Both Die At The End, written by Adam Silvera, and next month we'll be chatting about NK Jemisin's The World We Make. What's They Both Die At The End about? "On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day." Thanks for tuning in. Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and I are book lovers and we've decided to do a monthly in-depth book discussion. Our 11th book is The Word For World Is Forest's, written by Ursula K Le Guin, and next month we'll be chatting about Adam Silvera's They Both Die At The End. What's The Word For World Is Forest about? "The Word for World Is Forest is a science fiction novella by American writer Ursula K. Le Guin, first published in the United States in 1972 as a part of the anthology Again, Dangerous Visions, and published as a separate book in 1976 by Berkley Books. It is part of Le Guin's Hainish Cycle. The story focuses on a military logging colony set up on the fictional planet of Athshe by people from Earth (referred to as "Terra"). The colonists have enslaved the completely non-aggressive native Athsheans, and treat them very harshly. Eventually, one of the natives, whose wife was raped and killed by a Terran military captain, leads a revolt against the Terrans, and succeeds in getting them to leave the planet. However, in the process their own peaceful culture is introduced to mass violence for the first time. The novel carries strongly anti-colonial and anti-militaristic overtones, driven partly by Le Guin's negative reaction to the Vietnam War. It also explores themes of sensitivity to the environment, and of connections between language and culture. It shares the theme of dreaming with Le Guin's novel The Lathe of Heaven, and the metaphor of the forest as a consciousness with the story "Vaster than Empires and More Slow". The novella won the Hugo Award in 1973, and was nominated for several other awards. It received generally positive reviews from reviewers and scholars, and was variously described as moving and hard-hitting. Several critics, however, stated that it compared unfavorably with Le Guin's other works such as The Left Hand of Darkness, due to its sometimes polemic tone and lack of complex characters." Thanks for tuning in. Also, feel free to ask questions or offer opinions of your own, whether down in the comment section or by hitting me up on social media @PhilSvitek. In the 2017 young adult novel They Both Die at the End, author Adam Silvera introduced two teenagers who experience one unforgettable day after a mysterious organization called Death-Cast informed them that today would be their last day on Earth. The book became a publishing phenomenon, hitting #1 on the New York Times best-seller list, garnering tremendous critical acclaim, and capturing the imagination of a massive audience of passionate readers. They Both Die at the End is one of the most popular YA titles on ‘BookTok', selling over 1.5 million copies domestically and nearly 2 million internationally. Now, the long-awaited prequel – The First to Die at the End – arrives in stores on October 4. In the highly anticipated novel, two new strangers spend a life-changing day together after Death-Cast makes its fateful calls. Orion Pagan has a serious heart condition and he signed up for Death-Cast so he could know what's coming. Valentino Prince has a long and promising future ahead and he only registered for Death-Cast after his twin sister nearly died in a car accident. Orion and Valentino cross paths in New York and immediately feel a deep connection. But when the first round of End Day calls goes out, one of them receives a call, and the other doesn't. Though neither boy is certain how the day will end, they know they want to spend it together…even if that means their goodbye will be heartbreaking.
Death-Cast is back in Adam Silvera's latest book “The First to Die at the End”. How would you spend your last day alive? We'll talk to the author Beyond the Mic. Beyond the Mic with Sean Dillon is the conversation series where actors, artists, authors, and more go deeper than a traditional interview. They go “Beyond the Mic”.

This week's episode is Eva and Katryn's most personal yet, as they describe writing their own stories from their specific perspectives and intersections. Eva talks about being mixed race (while being--direct quote: “pale as the beacons of Gondor”) and honoring her culture on her own terms, while Katryn explores intersectionality and being “bi-everything.” Helpful note: Eva and Katryn say the word “complicated” roughly five thousand times, so please exercise caution if you turn it into a drinking game. *Content warnings: Race, ableism, micro-aggressions, bullying. Sources Eva talks about seeking positive and authentic Latinx and mixed-race representation, and names both Adam Silvera for his books and Nina LaCour for her personal statements on being mixed and white passing. Katryn has written a few essays on the personal topics covered in this episode. Here's one recent one on the power of books as we're growing up.
