The idea for this mix came a few months back when Francis Mallinson and Ben Clarke, both English friends of mine, were DJing at a Switch gig in Bristol. One of the first tracks Francis played last night was Metro Area - Miura and as soon as I heard it I was bugging him to find out what it was. The next day, on my way back to Switzerland, I picked a copy of IDJ magazine that included a feature called "NYC Disco Special - The Rebirth of New York Disco?" which incidentally talked about the Miura track. At that point I realised that disco/nudisco/NYC-disco, or whatever you wanna call it, was on its way back and that it deserved a mix. These days, with the growing popularity of acts like Hercules And Love Affair, MGMT, Empire Of Sun...etc, you can see that the sound is here to stay for a while which is very welcomed after a few years of being pounded by a hell of a lot of dull minimal techno. Besides, it's not just disco that is bringing back melody, as you can see from Sasha's Invol2ver mix CD, Guy J's Esperanza album or some of the latest Sven Vath live mixes. Other disco influences in this mix come from Simian Mobile Disco that did a pretty funky set at the end of last year that included a reworked Kebekelektrik track. Bottom line: melody is back with a vengeance and this is precisely what I'm trying to transmit with this mix. My own personal highlight of the mix is Lee Douglas' New York Story track which is not big. IT IS HUGE. As IDJ put it: "A definite scene (NYC Disco) anthem, and a good summary of where NYC is at right now".
Back in the late 90s, I used to to love trance music and amongst other things, I used to listen to Judge Jules' and Dave Pearce's shows on Radio1. I was keen on this type of music until the early 2000s, when I started to diversify into house music and I clearly remember the first day I listened to Desyn Masiello's Essential Mix back in late 2004. I couldn't stop wondering where the music he played in that mix came from. Had Desyn been playing far too much GTA Vice City? Where the 80s back? Some tracks had quite a progressive touch as well but I had missed the progressive house movement of the early 2000s, so it was new to me as well. Listening to this mix felt like being born again from a dance music perspective. Desyn's mix inspired me to compile my first ever mix which was called "It's About Time Mix". The likes of Harry Pear, Mezzomatic, Rex The Dog...etc, were all featured in that 2004 mix and I wanted to include them in this mix to remind people how good these tracks were and hopefully to open the eyes of people in the same way that they did with me 4 years ago. As always, don't forget to check the Lyrics section of the mp3 to see the tracklisting from your music player.
Hot on the heels of my first ever mix, which will be made available on the podcast next month, comes the second one. The aim of the mix was to showcase two massive tracks which I wanted to share with other people: Narcotic Thrust mix of Depeched Mode's Suffer Well and Popof's Lost Through. Tracks before these two aim to warm up the listener with some deep house music. My own personal highlight here is the Elusive Remix of Matthew Adam's No More, Anymore! Depeche Mode's mix goes back a couple of years when Sven Vaeth used it to start his sets. People used to go nuts when listening to this. Popof's Lost Through is actually distributed in two parts, Part 1 and Part 2 but in this mix, I wanted to show both of them, so I ended up doing a little edit where I layered one on top of the other. After Popof, the mix starts winding down with Julian Jeweil Remix of Lange's Perihelion which adds a progressive touch to the mix, before ending with the Scratch Massive's rather spooky Silence track. Hope you enjoy listening to the mix as much as I did putting it together. Don't forget to check the Lyrics section of the mp3 to see the tracklisting from your music player.
