Hollywood And Horsepower Show with Mark Otto From Casablanca to the Cutting Room with guests Michael Blowen and Buck Wilson From Casablanca to the Cutting Room: Hollywood Stories, Movie Legends, and the Restaurants That Remember Summary Hollywood's Vanishing Creative Community Marc Otto welcomes former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen and movie enthusiast Buck Wilson for a wide-ranging conversation about classic cinema, studio culture, and the relationships that shaped Hollywood history. Blowen describes the old studio environment as a working community where writers, actors, directors, and critics could form genuine relationships and help one another. His memories of John Huston, Jack Nicholson, Julius J. Epstein, and the storytellers gathered at Epstein's Beverly Hills dinners reveal a Hollywood built as much on conversation and trust as on formal production. The guests contrast that atmosphere with a modern industry they see as more controlled, compartmentalized, and promotional. They also emphasize that conflict on a set was not necessarily a sign of failure, because strong films could emerge from arguments, creative tension, and competing ideas. Throughout the discussion, collaboration is presented as one of the essential forces behind enduring entertainment. Why Casablanca Became an Evergreen Casablanca becomes the central thread of the episode because it is the favorite movie of both Marc and Buck and is closely connected with Michael's friendship with screenwriter Julius J. Epstein. Michael explains that the screenplay was created through a collaborative studio process involving Julius and Philip Epstein, Howard Koch, Casey Robinson, and other contributors. He recalls that Epstein regarded it as simply another studio assignment and was surprised by its later cultural importance. The group discusses Harvard screenings, the film's gradual growth after its initial release, its memorable dialogue, its wartime themes, and the layered moral conflict beneath its romantic story. Marc also describes production documents and budget information that Michael shared with him, including cast and writer salaries and disputes over the film's moral implications. Their conversation presents Casablanca as a movie whose reputation grew because its writing, performances, music, editing, historical moment, and accidental creative discoveries all came together. Movies That Found Their Audience Later The guests explore how many famous movies were not immediate successes and only later became classics. Michael points to Casablanca, A Christmas Story, and Citizen Kane as films that developed audiences through rereleases, television, college traditions, or long-term critical appreciation. Marc describes his own delayed appreciation of Citizen Kane and compares the experience to learning to hear the complexity of the Beatles. Buck openly says he still does not like Citizen Kane, leading to a discussion of the intangible qualities that make a work connect with one viewer but not another. The episode also touches on Tommy Boy, Three Men and a Little Lady, Home Alone, Billy Jack, The Born Losers, and The Pope of Greenwich Village. Together, these examples show how timing, competition, distribution, cultural context, and personal perspective can matter as much as opening-weekend performance. Deals, Theme Songs, and Unexpected Fortunes The conversation moves behind the business side of entertainment through stories about contracts, percentages, music rights, and studio employment. Buck recounts how Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne created “Three Coins in the Fountain” with almost no information and later discovered that no one had secured the studio's ownership of the song. Michael tells how Alec Guinness accepted a percentage of Star Wars and later said the decision paid for his retirement. He also recalls Richard Brooks narrowly missing the chance to purchase lifetime rights to “Rock Around the Clock” for an additional $500. Marc adds the story of the Cheers theme song becoming an iconic last-minute replacement. These anecdotes reinforce the episode's recurring idea that small decisions, overlooked details, and unplanned substitutions can become some of the most important parts of entertainment history. Restaurants as Places Where Stories Live After Michael leaves, Marc and Buck connect Hollywood history with restaurants, travel, friendship, and personal memory. They discuss Musso & Frank Grill, The Brown Derby, The Palm, St. Elmo Steak House, Malone's, Win Schuler's, Eddie Merlot's, and Tony's Steak and Seafood as places tied to careers, family experiences, relationships, and memorable evenings. Buck recalls disliking formal restaurant outings as a child before learning to appreciate the Brown Derby, while Marc describes teaching his children the etiquette they absorbed from dining with adults. Buck tells the story of marrying Trina during a dinner in the wine cellar at St. Elmo, and Marc explains why The Palm Miami and Eddie Merlot's carry emotional significance for him. The discussion suggests that restaurants often serve as unofficial clubhouses where people decompress after work, exchange stories, form relationships, and preserve the social bonds of an industry. The Invisible Art That Saves a Film The episode closes with Buck's story about a deleted scene from Save the Tiger that Jack Lemmon considered some of his best acting. Although the scene was powerful on its own, it was removed because it interrupted the film's momentum, illustrating the discipline required to sacrifice strong material for the larger work. Marc expands the point by describing editing as an underappreciated art equal in importance to acting and cinematography. He notes that filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Judd Apatow are valued for their ability to recognize useful pieces and assemble them into a coherent whole. The traditional phrase “cutting-room floor” becomes a reminder of the physical process by which film was once cut and spliced. The closing lesson is that audiences often experience only the finished harmony, while the choices, arguments, discarded scenes, and invisible craftsmanship behind it remain untold.

Episode 109: Michael League is the founder of Snarky Puppy, the GroundUP Music label, and the GroundUP Music Festival, and he's one of the most independent minds working in music today. He sat down with us for a deep conversation about how he built the whole thing. This isn't an interview about bass tone or gear. It's about how the entire machine actually works: how a bandleader turns a college project into a five-time Grammy-winning institution, an artist-first record label, and an international festival, all on his own terms, and all without a major label calling the shots. We trace the whole arc. League started Snarky Puppy in 2004 at the University of North Texas because he wasn't getting to play, so he built his own band. It transformed when he immersed himself in the Dallas gospel and R&B scene, absorbing the mentorship of the late Bernard Wright, the "North Star" who reshaped its feel. Out of that came the Snarky Puppy sound and the rotating cast fans call "the Fam," nearly 40 players who launched solo careers like Cory Henry's ("Lingus" is one of the most-watched instrumental performances online), Bill Laurance, Mark Lettieri, Larnell Lewis, Robert "Sput" Searight, and more. Michael pulls back the curtain: how he leads and pays this rotating collective, schedules a year out so everyone gets bandstand time, and sees himself, borrowing from Béla Fleck, as "a leader among equals." We get into why he founded GroundUP Music after growing disenchanted with the label system, how it works as an artist-friendly alternative to majors, and how the GroundUP Festival became a no-headliner gathering that's crossed the Atlantic. We also cover his life as collaborator: his partnership with David Crosby, whose late-career renaissance he helped spark; Lalah Hathaway entering the Snarky orbit; Family Dinner coming together; discovering Jacob Collier early; his band Elipsis with Antonio Sanchez and Pedrito Martinez; his love of the oud; and running it all from a 500-person Roman-era village in Spain. We talk making a living in music, sustainable careers for musicians, mentors and friends he's lost, and AI's effect on the industry. This is for musicians, bandleaders, producers, and label-builders and anyone who's wondered how to build something lasting without compromising the art. Send Kevin a Text MessageLauren Shuler Donner, one of Hollywood's most influential and adaptable producers, joins host Kevin Goetz for a wide-ranging career retrospective. Over nearly five decades, Shuler Donner has produced roughly 40 films that have grossed more than $5 billion worldwide — including Mr. Mom, St. Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink, Dave, Free Willy, and the X-Men franchise she helped build years before Marvel became Marvel. She talks with Goetz about breaking into a male-dominated industry, her 38-year love story and creative partnership with director Richard Donner, her philanthropic work with the Motion Picture & Television Fund, and her latest chapter producing the Broadway musical adaptation of The Lost Boys.Breaking Into a Male-Dominated Industry (06:10): Shuler Donner recalls knocking on doors with no connections, becoming one of only three women among 300 men in NBC's camera department, and working her way into producing.Discovering John Hughes and Making Mr. Mom (12:29): Shuler Donner recalls cold-calling John Hughes, championing his unproduced script Mr. Mom, and casting an unknown Michael Keaton after seeing him in Night Shift.Falling for Dick Donner on the Set of Ladyhawke (16:43): Shuler Donner describes pursuing Richard Donner to direct Ladyhawke, working with him as a producer, and falling in love with him during the Italian shoot.Radio Flyer, Free Willy, and the Power of Testing (24:53): Shuler Donner discusses Radio Flyer's heartbreaking low box office despite strong scores, and how a fan's $10 donation "for the whales" inspired Free Willy's end-credit hotline. The Midwest Gut Check and the Search for Real Villains (28:01): Shuler Donner explains testing projects against whether "a kid from Cleveland" would pay to see them, and demanding villains like Magneto have real, human motivations.Finding Hugh Jackman (30:40): Shuler Donner recounts spotting Hugh Jackman in a self-taped Oklahoma! audition, flying him to LA, and sending him to read for Bryan Singer in Toronto sight unseen.Getting X-Men Made (34:07): After Warner Bros. passed, Shuler Donner pitched X-Men to Fox's Bill Mechanic, who, unbeknownst to her, had sold his own comic collection to pay for college. The Lost Boys on Broadway (37:02): Shuler Donner talks about bringing The Lost Boys, and eventually Dave, to the Broadway stage.Testing Pretty in Pink's Ending (43:53): Shuler Donner explains how test audiences rejected the original ending of Pretty in Pink, leading to a reshoot that paired Molly Ringwald with Andrew McCarthy instead of Jon Cryer.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Lauren Shuler DonnerProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, Nick Nunez, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Lauren Shuler Donner:IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0795682/Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauren_Shuler_DonnerFor more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com

This week, the AI industry continues its speedrun toward becoming the tech equivalent of a late-stage casino. Elon Musk insists reports of aid-cut-related deaths don't exist despite mountains of evidence, SpaceX stock slides far enough to knock him out of the trillionaire club, and a startup is literally suing the U.S. government because Anthropic's Fable 5 model got turned off after three whole days of availability. Once again, we revisit the First Commandment of Grumpy Old Geeks: never build your company on someone else's platform.Meanwhile, gas stations are being accused of using AI to coordinate prices, corporations are discovering that AI tokens cost actual money, and a Microsoft researcher used goats in Age of Empires II to demonstrate that maybe, just maybe, people are projecting way too much intelligence onto chatbots. The goats emerge with their reputations intact. The AI industry, less so.The workforce bloodbath rolls on as Oracle quietly sheds 21,000 employees while blaming AI, Norway bans generative AI for elementary school students after discovering that children should probably learn to read before outsourcing their homework to robots, and the FCC flirts with rules that could effectively kill anonymous burner phones in the name of fighting scams. Over at Meta, an employee surveillance program accidentally exposed sensitive data to the entire company because of course it did, while Zuckerberg continues his relentless quest to strap cameras to everyone's face and call it progress. Add in YouTube settling another social-media-harm case, Chrome finally kneecapping traditional ad blockers, and prediction markets spreading across tech like mold in a college apartment, and it's becoming increasingly clear that every bad idea eventually gets funded. In transportation news, autonomous vehicles continue demonstrating that "mostly works" is not a reassuring phrase when attached to two tons of moving metal. A Tesla on Autopilot crashes into a home and kills a grandmother, Rivian faces lawsuits over self-driving promises its hardware allegedly can't fulfill, and Waymo recalls thousands of robotaxis after they developed an unfortunate habit of driving into closed freeway construction zones. Elsewhere, Elon and Bezos are eyeing billions in broadband subsidies, Polymarket is accused of paying influencers to fake betting videos and climate data archivists are preserving public information from political interference.Media recommendations include The Mandalorian, Silo, Strange New Worlds, Dungeon Crawler Carl, and a reminder that Firefox may soon be the last refuge for people who enjoy both the internet and ad blockers. How to Transform a SaaS Company with AI from ELMO CTO

The Data Chief

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2026 35:48

What happens when a software company building AI tools for HR teams uses those same tools to transform itself? Josh McKenzie, Chief Technology Officer at ELMO Software Group, shares how his team rebuilt their entire software development lifecycle around AI agents and redrew the boundaries of every engineering role. He breaks down how to lead that shift without losing people's trust, why domain expertise is the real SaaS moat, and how the right analytics partner unlocks decisions HR teams have never been able to make before. Key Moments: The SaaS Moat: What AI Can't Erode (06:37): Josh argues SaaS value runs deeper than software. Accountability, compliance, and domain expertise keep purpose-built platforms irreplaceable. How ELMO's AI Journey Started (10:23): ELMO started by mapping every role against AI impact. Turning that lens on their own engineering team set the full transformation in motion. Why ELMO Chose ThoughtSpot Over Building Its Own Analytics (18:42): A homegrown tool requiring too much user expertise led ELMO to look elsewhere. ThoughtSpot Spotter and natural language capabilities closed the gap. Why HR Teams Are the Most Underserved (20:21): Payroll here, benchmarking data there, performance data somewhere else. HR teams have been drowning in spreadsheet hell for years. Josh explains how AI finally closes that gap. From Engineer to CTO: Build a Team of Complements (24:17): Josh reflects on the mindset shift that defined his path to the C-suite. Great leadership means building a team whose strengths cover your blind spots. Key Quotes: “ ThoughtSpot was particularly interesting for us… The big thing for us was the Spotter product. Allowing users to bridge that data analyst gap was really important. So, that product has yielded really, really great results for us.” - Josh McKenzie “I think it's really important that we instill a culture where it's okay to fail, and it's okay to make a mistake. You want to be vocal about your mistakes so others don't repeat the same mistake.” - Josh McKenzie “My belief is you want to focus on your secret sauce. So, what is the thing that makes your business super successful? And for us, that's where we came to look at ThoughtSpot. It has a really nice visual user interface and allows you to create some great dashboards.” - Josh McKenzie Mentions Hiring and Onboarding Taking Longer Despite Widespread AI Adoption, New Australian Research Finds The 5 Levels of AI Coding (Why Most of You Won't Make It Past Level 2) WireGuard: Next Generation Kernel Network Tunnel | Jason A. Donenfeld Guest Bio As the Chief Technology Officer, Josh McKenzie is responsible for both technical strategy and delivery (build, release and operation) of the ELMO product suite. Josh has a proven track record of successfully leading technology teams and implementing transformative strategies that enhance efficiency, drive growth, and elevate overall technological capabilities. Josh has 20 years of experience in technology, primarily in FinTech. Before joining ELMO in 2024, Josh held executive and senior positions at Lendi Group, OFX, ASX and Westpac. Josh holds a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Newcastle and an MBA from the University of Sydney. Hear more from Cindi Howson here. Sponsored by ThoughtSpot.

Could your job be the reason for your marriage failing? Divorce rates are higher when one of the couples is employed doing one of these jobs...  Jelly Roll and Bunnie XO divorce update! Raven has his own suspicions though, he thinks she likes him better before he lost all of his weight. Anna and Raven discuss celebrity changing their traits... then falling off.  Trending today: Amazon Prime Day! Anna has one rule going into this not-so-special day anymore... Go into it with a plan! Even though its multiple times a near now, know what you need! Madonna did not date a man without a bathtub. Anna is wondering... what man takes a bath?! So, naturally, she asks men listening to call in so she can take a poll.   Raven started investing in SpaceX recently and noticed many people wish they got in on it earlier. In general,... what did you join/do too late and wish you started earlier.  Toy story 5 is out now and people have started to realize Tim Allen and Tom Hanks look like buzz and woody now. Their characters. Anna decided to see what animated characters she, Raven, Producer Justin and Producer Sophia look like.  The World Cup is a very exciting time in the USA right now! Elmo has learned his lesson too for not choosing the Knicks to win because now they are accusing him of not being team USA.  Isaiah wants to sue his parents. When his grandmother passed away several years ago, each of the grandchildren got a lump sum of money. It wasn't a ton, $10,000 per grandchild. He got 10k, and his older sister got $10k. Because he was underage at the time, it was handled by his parents. Now that he has $50,000 in college loans, he asked his parents for the money so he could put it towards his bills and a security deposit for an appointment. They've informed him that they had to use the money towards his sister's medical procedure years ago. He says her “medical procedure” was a nose job that wasn't covered by insurance- and they won't/can't pay him back. He thinks the only route is to sue them to show that he's serious, his girlfriend, Kelly, thinks he's being dramatic. Just let it go. Sara has a chance to win $3,200! All he has to do is answer more pop culture questions than Raven in Can't Beat Raven!

He covers a US State Department–funded public-diplomacy series of untitled “Pratt shorts” pairing Chris Pratt with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin to teach constitutional values through short live-action/animation episodes. Mac laments the lack of excitement around the upcoming USA 250 compared with the 1976 bicentennial. He reports Ricky Gervais confirmed another Netflix special, and Carlos Mencia was charged with 12 felony tax counts for allegedly not filing returns and not reporting $8.7 million. In Segment 1, call sign Ag—a Texas Aggie and former Harrier XO—takes you on an unforgettable journey crossing the Atlantic to Desert Storm. From a midnight “Casablanca” goodbye at Cherry Point to dangerous night tanking with KC‑10s, metal-to-metal probe contact, a thunderstorm with St. Elmo's fire, and a tense close ID with an Israeli E‑2, Ag's story is a masterclass in nerve, precision, and naval aviation under pressure.Segment 2 shifts to DC-style storytelling with Derek from dcartworks.net, the artist behind stunning 3D metal squadron patches, Harrier bottle openers, and custom whiskey glasses. He shares a heart-stopping Afghanistan emergency airdrop in the Korangal Valley—jumping over 16 bundles to fix a ramp/door issue, realizing he's three feet from the edge with no tether, and facing Taliban fire below. Plus, we uncover how D.C. drove updated tactics and seeker-equipped bombs that prevent the guesswork Harrier pilots endured. Tune in—for service, art, and stories that will stop your heart.
