This month we struggle with very conscious bias when we discuss how much we love Perfume Genius' new album Glory. Welcome to Episode 57 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. Andy Butler is a DJ, producer, songwriter and founding member of Hercules and Love Affair.  After a five year break,  Hercules and Love Affairs new record In Amber  brings long time collaborator and co-producer ANOHNI back into the fold, along with english drummer Budgie and singer Elin Eythordsdottir. In Amber  is a dark, jagged and heavy journey that questions faith,  false narratives assigned by social and religious constructs and ultimately celebrates perseverance and individual strength.  In this episode Andy catches us up on his projects over the last few years, how Black Metal plays a role on In  Amber and he shares the process of making a multi-personnel, multi-genre influenced record.  Joe and Andy discuss the message and sonics extremities on In Amber,  why it's both a rejection of religion and a search for the spiritual, and how it addresses the disconnection to nature.  We also hear how Budgie changed the sonic nature of In Amber  and why Andy is going back to touring with a larger band. Andy Butler has been at the helm of US nu-disco outfit Hercules And Love Affair since the mid-2000s. By the end of that decade, "Blind" had become a hit on the dancefloor but also across gyms and workout classes. The group are back this week with their first album in five years. Andy Butler popped by the FRANCE 24 studios to tell Marjorie Hache more about "In Amber", which was co-written by long-term collaborator and friend Anohni (formerly Antony and the Johnsons).

The idea for this mix came a few months back when Francis Mallinson and Ben Clarke, both English friends of mine, were DJing at a Switch gig in Bristol. One of the first tracks Francis played last night was Metro Area - Miura and as soon as I heard it I was bugging him to find out what it was. The next day, on my way back to Switzerland, I picked a copy of IDJ magazine that included a feature called "NYC Disco Special - The Rebirth of New York Disco?" which incidentally talked about the Miura track. At that point I realised that disco/nudisco/NYC-disco, or whatever you wanna call it, was on its way back and that it deserved a mix. These days, with the growing popularity of acts like Hercules And Love Affair, MGMT, Empire Of Sun...etc, you can see that the sound is here to stay for a while which is very welcomed after a few years of being pounded by a hell of a lot of dull minimal techno. Besides, it's not just disco that is bringing back melody, as you can see from Sasha's Invol2ver mix CD, Guy J's Esperanza album or some of the latest Sven Vath live mixes. Other disco influences in this mix come from Simian Mobile Disco that did a pretty funky set at the end of last year that included a reworked Kebekelektrik track. Bottom line: melody is back with a vengeance and this is precisely what I'm trying to transmit with this mix. My own personal highlight of the mix is Lee Douglas' New York Story track which is not big. IT IS HUGE. As IDJ put it: "A definite scene (NYC Disco) anthem, and a good summary of where NYC is at right now".
