It's no secret that the logistics industry is in despair. The availability of warehouse space was just 5.6%. That's an all-time low and dramatic fall from the 8.5% reported at the start of 2016. As a result, retailers are being pushed to squeeze as much value out of each square foot. From the way they store inventory to the method of picking orders, strong warehouse management processes help retailers run their warehouses like a well-oiled machine. This guide shares how. Table of contents What is warehouse management? The benefits of having warehouse management technology Inventory management and warehouse management: How do they work together? Warehouse management processes Warehouse management best practices Advantages of working with a 3PL for warehouse management What to look for in warehouse management technology What is warehouse management? Warehouse management is the set of operational processes that help a warehouse run efficiently. These processes include tracking inventory levels, locating goods, managing staff schedules, fulfilling orders, and optimizing warehouse space. What is a warehouse management system? A warehouse management system (WMS) is the software that helps a business complete operational tasks within its warehouse. From resource planning to supply chain logistics, it's a technology retailers use to fulfill customer orders from a warehouse or distribution center. Some merchants have their WMS as subsection of wider enterprise resource planning (ERP) software—one central dashboard for ecommerce brands to control all aspects of the business. The benefits of having warehouse management technology The global supply chain is in disarray. Manufacturing and shipping times are much longer than they once were—an issue not set to resolve itself anytime soon. McKinsey reports that significant disruptions to manufacturing production now occur every 3.7 years, with reasons ranging from political instability to natural disasters. Ultimately, a WMS will help you speed up your receiving, cycle counting, and fulfillment, resulting in more efficient processes and reduced labor costs. Nick Malinowski, Co-founder of OTW Shipping A WMS that syncs with your inventory management system helps you stay one step ahead, hence why 38% of the merchants we surveyed plan to integrate technology to help their company anticipate disruptions and demand. Inside one, you'll see dropping inventory levels to prioritize replenishment. If you know that one bestselling SKU sells 500 units per week, but it takes three weeks to receive shipments from a supplier, for example, set an alert to notify you once stock levels drop below 2,000 (leaving extra leeway in case a spanner is thrown into the works.) Using a warehouse management system, you'll be able to track every product in your warehouse and help boost your customer experience by giving them accurate visibility on your product's availability. Perry Valentine, Founder of AtPerry's Combine those alerts with historical data for accurate inventory forecasting, using your WMS. Every item in your warehouse is costing you money, both in storage fees and opportunity costs. Poorly performing inventory is taking space that should be given to higher volume, faster moving, and ultimately, more profitable stock. Ben Clarke, interim Head of Marketing for James and James Ecommerce Fulfilment, says, “By ensuring that products are always shelved in the most efficient way possible, and by providing real-time visibility of stock levels, a warehouse management system can help avoid overstocking or running out of popular items. This can save significant amounts of money on inventory carrying costs.” Inventory management and warehouse management: How do they work together? The key to success in global ecommerce is to sell in the channels where your customers are. From social media storefronts to mobile commerce, this multi-channel retail strategy is notoriously hard for retailers to get a grasp on. You neve...

We welcome Australian duo X CLUB to our ever growing Global Mix series today, as the pair provides us with an hour of absolute club ready heaters from kick off. Born through a desire to experiment and push the boundaries of modern club music, ‘X CLUB.' is the project of Brisbane based production duo Ben Clarke and Jesse Morath. The two creatives individually made a move into the Brisbane electronic music scene via their previous solo projects sharing club stages with numerous Australian and international producers. After playing a spontaneous back to back set and discovering they shared an equal passion for a rather more raw and experimental side of electronic music, the two joined forces and never looked back. Drawing major influence from the iconic sounds of the 90's warehouse rave movement and modern experimental artists such as Bjaarki, Objekt, Skee Mask, PTU and Clouds, Clarke and Morath have quickly developed a unique sound, most recently releasing their 'Active Denial Systems' EP with the excellent 1ØPILLSMATE. For the next hour get stuck into this better of a mix from quite possibly our new favourite Australians ever. In the first episode of this series focusing on small businesses in the UK, Tim Haïdar, content lead at GS1 UK, speaks with Meenesh Mistry, the founder and CEO of vegan cookie company, Wholey Moly, about the five things that helped a recipe from his kitchen land on the shelves of Selfridges, Wholefoods and more than 200 independents and coffee shops.A career accountant with no prior experience in the food business, the idea for Wholey Moly came out of the frustration of working in a corporate office under the constant bombardment of calorific snacks.Meenesh and his co-founder wife, Parul, still craved that sweet treat with the their 3pm coffee, but didn't want something that contained as much sugar as a barn full of toffee. So, they just took the plunge and made one. And after Meenesh's interview, we speak with resident barcode expert, Ben Clarke, about fun barcodish things. No, seriously, stick with it. BLOOM RECORDS PODCAST 204 - STEVE M https://soundcloud.com/stevemarx Steve Marx has been a regular fixture on the Sydney & London club scenes for over 2 decades now after making the move from his hometown in 1996. A regular on the Sydney scene, Steve could be found at the infamous Hordern Pavillion parties in the late eighties and early nineties where he developed his interest and passion for electronic music by leading the charge at clubs such as Base and The Front. Having made the move to London, he quickly discovered a taste for nights like Malibu Stacy, Tyrant & Renaissance and soon got himself in amongst the smaller nights where an exciting underground scene was developing alongside the rise of the superclub. In 1999 he met Ben Clarke and Francis Mallinson and the Synchronize parties were born. I first met him in 2002, where he could be often be found in Plastic Fantastic Records or at Digression in Soho, where up and coming DJs mixed with other arty types sharing a beer and common musical ideas. Maybe it was that year that made the man and alongside Nick Dawes, he co-organised the Shadow 001 event at the Fortress Studios for World DJ day, playing alongside Rowan Blades, Paolo Mojo and Jonathan Lisle in an event where proceeds went to The Nordoff Robbins Children’s Charity. Guest slots at Renaissance @The Ministry of Sound, and many of London’s smaller cooler underground nights began coming as well monthly gigs in Amsterdam, Zurich and further afield across Europe became the norm, playing alongside Sasha, Nick Warren & to name but a few. Often specialising in the closing set, Steve knows how to work a room, through skillful programming, expert track selection and above all tight mixing and is always an entertainer, both behind the decks and on the dancefloor, Progressive House flows through his DNA and remains he remains at the front of the curve as far track selection and finding the groove goes. Fast forward to 2016 after a musically hiatus has now firmly planted back in his hometown and birthplace Sydney. With music on his mind, Steve is on the rise again, supporting John Digweed for T-1000 events and one of the founding members of Jigsaw with musical aficionado’s and partners Eddy Wells, Neil Smith and Kate Bailey. 2017 has been nothing short amazing, with a request to warm up from no other than El Maestro Hernan Cattaneo @ Electric Gardens afterparty alongside Guy J, Guy Mantzur & Eelke Kliejn, so much so that an impromptu b2b took place with Eelke on that very evening, something for the musical CV some would say. Come 2019 and Steve has firmly established himself as an in demand local artist with regular appearances for Return To Rio, T1000 Event, Boots & Catz and a host of other nights in Sydney & Interstate. The horizon of forthcoming shows and appearances is always looking bright and for that Steve is always grateful. Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: download links below This Toad Session is something a little different, in that instead of setting up a studio environment in the house, we actually just recorded the songs at a house gig. The gig was in fact also the band's first live appearance in four or five years. So the whole atmosphere of the session is massively different to the usual ones we record. The interview took place all at once before the gig, rather than in and around the songs like it usually does, and for the podcast I have just spliced bits of it into the podcast as and when it seemed suitable. We also webcast this live, which was kind of fun. I am not sure how brilliant the image and sound were for everyone, but it was an extremely fun thing to do and something we'll be looking to do more of in the new year I hope. It was a little tricky to ask people to take pictures in the middle of a performance, so we have a few photos by Anneli and Fiona but not very many. As per usual we have videos of four songs, over and above the main video above. Martin actually read some of his poetry before the gig started, so there's a little of that in the main video as well. The session tracks are all downloadable for free below, as is the main interview podcast, with the full tracklist for that at the bottom of the page. A large thank you to Fiona Buckle and Anneli Kuukka for their pictures, to Neil Pennycook for recording and mixing the songs and to Ben Clarke for helping with the filming. The idea for this mix came a few months back when Francis Mallinson and Ben Clarke, both English friends of mine, were DJing at a Switch gig in Bristol. One of the first tracks Francis played last night was Metro Area - Miura and as soon as I heard it I was bugging him to find out what it was. The next day, on my way back to Switzerland, I picked a copy of IDJ magazine that included a feature called "NYC Disco Special - The Rebirth of New York Disco?" which incidentally talked about the Miura track. At that point I realised that disco/nudisco/NYC-disco, or whatever you wanna call it, was on its way back and that it deserved a mix. These days, with the growing popularity of acts like Hercules And Love Affair, MGMT, Empire Of Sun...etc, you can see that the sound is here to stay for a while which is very welcomed after a few years of being pounded by a hell of a lot of dull minimal techno. Besides, it's not just disco that is bringing back melody, as you can see from Sasha's Invol2ver mix CD, Guy J's Esperanza album or some of the latest Sven Vath live mixes. Other disco influences in this mix come from Simian Mobile Disco that did a pretty funky set at the end of last year that included a reworked Kebekelektrik track. Bottom line: melody is back with a vengeance and this is precisely what I'm trying to transmit with this mix. My own personal highlight of the mix is Lee Douglas' New York Story track which is not big. IT IS HUGE. As IDJ put it: "A definite scene (NYC Disco) anthem, and a good summary of where NYC is at right now".
