Delighted to be joined by electronic musician, Jas Shaw on the podcast this week.Jas was one half of Simian Mobile Disco, who he formed in Manchester with James Ford, a previous guest on Synthetic Dreams, back in 2003.Originally just a DJ side project to their four-piece band Simian, Simian Mobile Disco formed as an electronic act after Simian parted ways in 2005.In 2006, the single ‘We Are Your Friends' by Justice vs Simian reached number 20 in the UK singles chart and became a massive club hit Simian Mobile Disco's excellent debut album, ‘Attack Decay Sustain Release', released in June 2007 on Wichita Recordings, received lots of praise from the UK press at the time. It's one of my favourite electronic albums. Still sounds fantastic  Jas discusses the making of his latest album ‘A Tea Within A Tea', which follows ‘The Exquisite Cops' released in 2019, as well as talking about his time in Simian and Simian Mobile DiscoLINKS:https://jasshaw.bandcamp.com/album/a-tea-within-a-tea

I just turned 40. Which in my mind was always a scary age because it was the age of my mother when she had me. We are very different my mother and I. She is very classy, highly educated, deeply feminine and downright elegant....and I...well..I have always been a mirror she did not have the easiest time looking into. At the moment - my family is in complete crisis, and I have finally decided to take a break from being part of our family system. It's the hardest thing I may have ever done. I can barely sleep - the anxiety that I'm hurting them by taking the space I need to heal - is excrutiating - but I have to do preseve my sanity and that's ok. Sometimes you have to walk away from the things you love most and pray for the strength to come back together stonger. I am praying to let go of the literal weight my choices had piled on top of my broken shoulder bones. I have never been good at taking care of myself. But I will now, and I am growing the fuck up and putting down this insane idea that other peoples happiness and nervous system regulation is my job.  No matter what else happens in my life, hopefully I will be able to convince her that despite my appearence, language, lack of conventional succcess markers that I'm going to be ok. That all the lessons she's been teaching me in her way have finally come home to roost. Anyway wish me luck - this will be a really lonely time for me - but that's ok - sometimes you just have to do the shit you hate to provide yourself the best chance of living the life that you have dreamed of having since you could blink. I LOVE YOU MOM. WE WILL MAKE IT THROUGH THIS TOGETHER. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Music: Sia, Elastic Heart Remix by Noah Lampert Cruel Intentions remix - Simian Mobile Disco

Today's episode features an in-depth and fascinating interview with Armenian-American vocalist, songwriter and composer, KÁRYYN KÁRYYN talks to me about the making of her latest three- track, EP Calm KAOSS! Which was co-produced by James Ford, one of the UK's biggest record producers, previous guest on Synthetic Dreams and one-half of Simian Mobile Disco. KÁRYYN also speaks about her time at Mills College in Oakland, where she was exposed to experimental music through teacher-composers like Pauline Oliveros and Maggi Payne.  We also discuss sexism in the music industry and the challenges she has faced as a female musician. She discusses these experiences in a frank and open way, but with a good deal of humour.   Calm KAOSS! Which also features two fantastic remixes, is out now on the always excellent Mute records, a label we both love

And to do that while you're trying to produce their new record? This is a question which is answered in this week's episode, in which our guest is one of the most prolific producers of Big UK Acts of the last two decades. As well as being a member of Simian Mobile Disco, James Ford (occasionally with his middle name included) has a production credits list which includes Depeche Mode, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Pet Shop Boys, and Beth Gibbons. If that's not going to yield some good podcast content, then the blame should fall squarely on the host.We discuss the role of the record producer today, as well as how that role has changed over time. Regular questions like the one about AI are covered. And we also get into detail about some specific projects, including the making of the brand new Pet Shop Boys record in James' home studio. This is a highly illuminating discussion on a topic that isn't particularly well understood. Podcast Overview: A-Trak & Will discuss growing up in limelight, producing versus DJing, sacrifices that come with a music career & his relationship with Kayne. Who is A-Trak: Very few DJs can jump from club sets to high-profile festival performances, to Kanye West's larger-than-life stadium shows with ease. In today's DJ culture, A-Trak holds a truly unique place. He founded 2007's most buzzworthy label, Fool's Gold, with a mission to merge all aspects of club music. The manifesto for this fusion was outlined on his first official mixtape: Dirty South Dance, which set the tone for Trizzy's very own production, each acapella or track re-edited to create something fresh. In a matter of a few months, his signature remixes (for, amongst others, Boys Noize and Simian Mobile Disco) and  his original tracks (Say Whoa produced for Nike and released on Kitsune) and a collaboration with Laidback Luke (Shake it down) were gaining support from the likes of Erol Alkan, Busy P, DJ AM, Annie Mac, MSTRKRFT and Boys Noize.   If you would like to join my community to carry on with all of these discussions please sign up to the link here: http://willclarke.club/ Learn more about your ad choices. My guest on the show is James Ford who is really one of the most badass producers in the business.  Im talking about the kind of low key English badassness and not the Tarantino variety if you know what I mean. James is involved in so many things and yet he does it without needing a big spotlight on himself. Humble badass. That's the one.  He's been active for many years. I mean we used to see each other in that classic ships in the night stylee when I was touring with Cristian Vogel back in the late nineties. We are talking about a man with Multiple decades of energy dedication and knowledge a go go! He's got the quadfecta mad skills as composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter which is probably one of the reasons he's been able to be so nimble and effective working with a huge range of incredible artists from Arctic Monkeys to Depeche Mode via Foals, Gorillaz and Kylie Minogue.   You may know him as one half of Simian Mobile Disco, alongside longtime creative partner Jas Shaw or perhaps as a touring member of The Last Shadow Puppets. The hat cupboard in the house is ample!   I was lucky enough to feature on a track with SMD a while back and got to see the studio when it was at the Premises in Hackney.  Now he's got a supreme attic room that is beyond decked out. We have a little tour of that for anyone who is curious about his gear choices after all this time.  Then we get deep into the world of making, art, the hurdles, the path. The good stuff of rambling! Welcome to the mind of a sonic chef. His first solo album “The Hum” is out now on warp records and it's a corker!   https://www.jamesellisford.com ________________ If you want to directly help support me in the pod work please consider joining my Patreon https://www.patreon.com/HOWA All sounds from this episode will go to those on the upper tier ! ________________   Id like to thank show sponsors    SOUNDTOYS   https://www.soundtoys.com   KORG   https://www.korg.com   STAGER MICS   http://stagermicrophones.com   _________________   NITTY!!!

It's taken James Ellis Ford twenty plus years in the A game to release his debut solo record. In these years he's become possibly the go to producer for anyone from Blur to Depeche Mode to Kylie to Gorillaz to Foals to Arctic Monkeys. He's also a Simian Mobile Disco, a Last Shadow Puppet, an Eno protege and inadvertently responsible for the epoch defining mid noughties anthem We Are Your Friends. It would have been easy for him to have made a celeb heavy, zeitgeist grabbing debut, instead, The Hum, released on Warp, is a dense, widescreen ode to pastoral prog, 70s fusion, King Crimson and so much more. James chats with Paul about finding his confidence, the method he absorbed from Eno that go beyond the technical and the enigmatic eccentricity of English music.James Ellis Ford's album The Hum is available now on Warp Records. Lost and Sound is proudly sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. John Tejada is a Vienna-born, Los Angeles-based electronic music composer, DJ, and professor at CalArts. Tejada’s professional output of music began in 1994 and has never let up, including four albums for the revered label Kompakt, plus releases on Pokerflat, Cocoon, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse, Defected, and his own label since 1996, Palette Recordings. Tejada has also been responsible for remixing over 100 songs for acts including The Postal Service, Télépopmusic, The Field, Bomb The Bass, Way Out West, Kevin Saunderson, Darren Emerson, Gui Boratto, Simian Mobile Disco and many others. Tejada’s latest venture as Wajatta is a new musical collaboration with international star Reggie Watts, having released their debut album, Casual High Technology, in 2018 and latest album Don’t Let Get You Down in 2020 on Brainfeeder. Today marks the release of John's fourth LP, 'Year of the Living Dead' which John's describes here; “The album was started using tools I was unfamiliar with, which became an interesting exploratory process,” Tejada says. “Staying away from the obvious and having to re-learn simple things was a fun challenge.” You can hear these new creative pulsions pushing the eight tracks on Year Of The Living Dead ever-forward; the album has a unique cast, and though there are trace elements of the genres Tejada has indulged previously, he’s never quite put them together this way before. There’s the dubwise glitter sprinkled across the moody opener “The Haunting Of Earth”, the kind caresses found amongst the deftly woven textures of “Sheltered”, and the churchy melancholy, all hymnal and golden, of “Echoes Of Life” Be sure to check it out and hear for yourself. It's available now via Kompakt. @paletterecordings @kompakt

This is the happiest day of my life.  Hands down. ZeroSpace, my Alien Adult Playground opens tonight.  I am turning 35, today, which in my mind was always a scary age because it was the age of Miranda when Sex and the City started and she seemed like a female crypt keeper to me with her lawyer job and awkward accessories and pleated pants and real old lady ovary problems.  But, it turns out, thirty fucking five is amazing.  Because it took me this long to actually come into my body completely. To let go of the literal weight my choices had piled on top of my broken shoulder bones.  No matter what else happens in my life, today, I got to hold my mothers hand and show her that I'm going to be ok. That all the lessons she's been teaching me in her way have finally come home to roost. Today, I finally have earned my name.  Today I finally feel like I deserve her love.  Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.  Music: Sia, Elastic Heart Remix by Noah Lampert           Cruel Intentions remix - Simian Mobile Disco   Rate and Review (

Cosmo Vitelli is a man of the world, an eager traveller and a musical craftsman unbound by stereotypes within electronic music culture. As the founder of I'm A Cliché he has been responsible for releasing some music from some of the now most influential names in the community. Moscoman, Red Axes, Simian Mobile Disco, Azari & III and many, many more have all appeared on the label since it's formation in 2004 some thirteen odd years ago. Cosmo himself, real name Benjamin Boguet, has released an array of of material on the label: oddball electronics with post punk undertones amidst faster acid cuts go a long way.
