Today's guest is Todd Nilssen. Todd is a documentary film maker whose most recent film, "The Last Stop" is today's topic of conversation. The Last Stop is a film about the Élan School, which was a controversial school / treatment facility for so-called juvenile delinquents which existed in the deep woods of Maine. That’s ExisTED, past-tense, because the Élan school was closed down in 2011 due to allegations of abuse which dated back to its opening in 1970. My guest today tells all. He is the creator of the internationally-known 7-Challenges model, which he created for adolescents. More recently, he’s incorporated the 7-challenges concepts into his new book, “Leap of Power” which is a helpful tool for adults as well. Today Zach Rhoads sits down with Harry Nelson to discuss Harry's latest book, "The United States of Opioids" in which he delivers critical insights about the Opioid Crisis, along with a roadmap with strategies for finding our way out. Per usual, Zach did not take anything for granted, and he applied pressure on Harry to explain many of his more nuanced points-- a task which Mr. Nelson handled like a true scholar. More about Harry, his book and today's interview Harry Nelson is a member of the FSDP Advisory Board. He is the co-founding and managing partner of Nelson Hardiman. Harry is also one of the nation’s leading healthcare attorneys, and a top expert on the future of U.S. healthcare. Throughout his book, and in our conversation today, Harry Nelson shares an essential and fascinating history of how opioid addiction grew roots into our culture, and lays out the case for why we cannot afford to continue our current, failing approach to pain management and opioid addiction. In the last few chapters of the book, Harry addresses the deeper roots of the crisis beyond health policy; he explains how we became a nation imprisoned by pain and how we can break free. He provides a practical guide for how we can reclaim our rights, our lives, and our health. He and I talk about all of this and more, coming up. _________ LEARN MORE ABOUT FSDP at http://fsdp.org/ __________ Purchase your copy of "The United States of Opioids: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NSCZRVX/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 - - - Visit Harry's Web Site: https://harrynelson.com - - - Visit the Nelson / Hardiman Site: https://www.nelsonhardiman.com/

Today's guest is Tony Trimingham. Tony is the recipient of an Australian Humanitarian Award. He is author of the book, “Not My Family, Never My Child”, he is a psychotherapist and counselor and he is the founder and CEO of a family-centered harm-reduction program called Family Drug Support Australia. From what I can tell, Tony has always been a helpful person and counseling was of great interest to him, but he never thought much about drugs or addiction or how those things might impact people or their families. . . . until his son Damien developed a destructive relationship with heroin. Damien died of a drug overdose— an overdose that Tony believes could have been prevented if he and others knew then what he knows now. And that’s why started Family Drug Support Australia: an organization that has provided comfort, education, and a regained sense of empowerment to thousands of families across the world. The Family Drug Support philosophy is one that Families For Sensible Drug policy is in the process of mirroring, here in the U.S. You can learn more about those efforts here http://fsdp.org/2019/02/14/familydrugsupportday/ - - - - - - - - - - Learn more about Families For Sensible Drug Policy http://fsdp.org Find dates of FSDP-involved events here http://fsdp.org/events/ - - - - - - - - - - Learn more about today's guest https://www.fds.org.au/ Learn about the FDS Online Resource https://www.fdsonline.org.au/ Become a member of FDS https://www.fds.org.au/membership/membership
Welcome to FSDP Presents: our new podcast with Zach Rhoads of "The Social Exchange Podcast." You, the listeners, will hear interviews with drug policy experts as well families directly affected by current drug policies and addiction-related issues. You will learn about Families For Sensible Drug Policy and what we are doing to support concerned family members like YOU-- ensuring that the collective family voice is front and center of a global conversation about drug policy. The episodes will be diverse and creative but two main themes will run through each episode: 1.) The question is not, "how do we keep people drug free?"
