“There are benefits to all mind-altering activities or substances…and it can almost be radical to even recognize that in a culture that seems hell-bent on convincing us all that drugs are evil and that drugs are the cause of the problem. What we've tried to do with The Social Exchange…is to broaden the definition of addiction beyond just drugs and to broaden it beyond just an over-medicalized mentality around it,” says Aaron Ferguson, co-host of The Social Exchange podcast. On today's episode, he is joined by his co-host Zach Rhoads to discuss the creation, development, and goals of the podcast, as well as what they've learned by interviewing countless experts and pain patients who've experienced addiction on a firsthand basis. Among many topics, they discuss differing viewpoints and arguments surrounding the concept and experience of addiction, the philosophy of harm reduction, and chemical dependency versus environmental influences. Zach Rhoads and Dr. Stanton Peele contemplate the transfer of knowledge about alcohol from Science to Society — and how imperfectly the job gets done. “Alcohol: Even a Little Bit Is Harmful!” the headline screams. It turns out that none of the experts interviewed advocates abstinence — including the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (now there's a title!). In fact, those who drink, worldwide, live longer with fewer disabilities than those who never drink, according to WHO. What gives? Is the New York Times guilty of malpractice, or just sowing confusion — especially for older Americans, who benefit the most from drinking. Do we Americans do better simply living and drinking from our core values and lives? Sigh. You're on your own when it comes to deciding to drink (or use drugs) or not. ***** SUBSCRIBE to Our Channel ***** To get more of our content and help us grow: https://www.youtube.com/c/LifeProcessProgram?sub_confirmation=1 ***** FOLLOW us on Social ***** - Facebook: https://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram - Twitter : https://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm - Instagram: https://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/life-process-program ***** CONTACT US ****** - Website: https://lifeprocessprogram.com - Text us: +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/support

Biological psychiatry has IMPLODED, and everyone knows it, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the long-time (2002-2015) director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Thomas Insel, biological psychiatry's biggest booster. Yet, instead of the relief from mental illness and addiction Insel and the entire field have promised from the 1970s on, we are inundated with mental disorders and drug deaths. NOW WHAT? The WHO, Insel, and the ENTIRE FIELD are at a loss. With no there there, what is to be done? Rushing to fill this breech, WHO is proposing a new Best Practices in Mental Health Guide on June 17, 2022. But given its progenitors' failures for more than a half century, we may be dubious. Instead of waiting for their opus, LPP presents its own best practices, one predicated on common sense knowledge of how humans succeed, rather than a half century of continuous failure. 0:00 America's mental health crisis 15:34 Zach Rhoads weighs in 16:40 Mental health among children / schools 21:52 Why does adventure end after preK? 30:00 PURPOSE 37:08 ENGAGEMENT + STRENGTHS and SKILLS 40:47 EXPERIENCE + ADVENTURE 49:45 COMMUNITY + COLLABORATION ***** SUBSCRIBE to Our Channel ***** To get more of our content and help us grow: https://www.youtube.com/c/LifeProcessProgram?sub_confirmation=1 ***** FOLLOW us on Social ***** - Facebook: https://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram - Twitter : https://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm - Instagram: https://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/life-process-program ***** CONTACT US ****** - Website: https://lifeprocessprogram.com - Text us: +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/support

Dr. Peele and Zach Rhoads respond to clips from Joe Rogan's recent interview with Stanford Psychiatrist and Author Anna Lembke. It was with some disappointment — but little surprise — that we watched “iconoclast” podcaster Joe Rogan interview an “all-is-dopamine” addiction expert (a position that even Nora Volkow seems to be backtracking on). Disappointment because Rogan seemed so sympathetic to Carl Hart's opposite position. But not surprised since (a) all-is-dopamine is the cultural fallback position, (b) Carl doesn't require interviewers to grasp experimentally his (our) position that addiction is a lived experience. We contend that Dr. Lembke's (America's) popular brain disease model NOT saved lives or prevented addiction in any meaningful way. Worse still, this reductionist "dopamine uber alles" model of addiction is actually doing MORE HARM THAN GOOD, as it permeates American culture and stymies people's ability to move forward in practical ways. Stanton then reflects on a recent MedPage Today article about social media addiction. ***** SUBSCRIBE to Our Channel ***** To get more of our content and help us grow: https://www.youtube.com/c/LifeProcessProgram?sub_confirmation=1 ***** FOLLOW us on Social ***** - Facebook: https://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram - Twitter : https://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm - Instagram: https://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/life-process-program ***** CONTACT US ****** - Website: https://lifeprocessprogram.com - Text us: +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/support

This is a short clip from Zach Rhoads' forthcoming interview with Dr. Stanton Peele. Stanton wrote the best-selling 1975 book, Love and Addiction, in which he laid out a conceptualization of addiction that transcended the drug-centered conceptualization with which the world was familiar. In this clip, Zach expresses to Stanton how his concept rings true in his own life as he compares his own heroin addiction to destructive relationships with women. Zach runs a thought experiment about how those relationships could have metastasized if he would have pursued them into the future. Stanton responds. Much of what he did with that fame was noble-- namely, helping disparaged people "put themselves back together" (his words). Dr. Hart is a professor (and former chair) of psychology and psychiatry at Columbia University. Today, he opens up to Zach Rhoads about his new book, "Drug Use For Grown-Ups", in which he's comes out of the closet about his own drug use and encourages the rest of us to do the same. Then they discuss differences between traumatic events and adverse conditions in life. Peele and Rhoads also consider what it means to be trauma informed versus believing trauma is responsible for addiction. And, of course, the hosts explain how all of this information applies to their work with clients in the Online Life Process Program. Today, I am very pleased to share a conversation with friend, author, podcast host, researcher and counselor, Zach Rhoads. Zach is the host of the podcast “The Social Exchange.” “The Social Exchange” features conversations with prominent thought leaders like Michael Shermer, Johann Hari, Anthony Magnabosco and many more. Zach is also the author of the book, “Outgrowing Addiction,” written with Dr. Stanton Peele, where they make the argument that the disease model of addiction is wrong while also presenting an alternative to the most common addiction rehab program, Alcoholics Anonymous. His book, “Outgrowing Addiction”, and the shortcomings of the mainstream view on addiction are the main topics of focus for this conversation. Here, we discuss the problems with AA and also touch on where it gets things right. We talk about Zach's views on the disease model of addiction and why he believes it's incorrect. We also touch briefly on Zach's own history of addiction to heroin, how he outgrew his addiction, and the role his experience played in developing his ideas about addiction, among other topics.Outgrowing Addiction: https://amzn.to/2MsbrSWThe Social Exchange Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-social-exchange/id1333527133Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1gVfFVRrsxHmBPJHvlmlW0?si=_vzb9JdwQW2rhthgJBPE3AYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7UKA-74CZdv-MimwmK4V0QZach Rhoads Twitter: https://twitter.com/rhoadsodaLife Process Program (an alternative to AA): https://lifeprocessprogram.comZach Rhoads and Dr. Stanton Peele discuss Dax Shepard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THb8OBXERRktheEWpodcast newsletter signup: http://ericwhte.com/newsletter/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ericwhteInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/eric.whte/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw27qaF6r_XdQrzREV21QSAhttp://ericwhte.com/

The actor, podcaster, and AA advocate Dax Shepard has decided to turn his sobriety count from 16 years all the way back to one day. This is the result of a recent decision to take narcotic pain killers off-script. Dr. Stanton Peele and Zach Rhoads discuss why Dax's own personal development is being stymied by 12-step ideology, and why he either cannot OR refuses to acknowledge that fact. - - - - - - - - - - (Part I -- Current Events) Dr. Peele and Zach Rhoads begin the show by reviewing some recent current events in addiction, harm reduction and psychology. 0:00 - 6:20 Zach discussed an article from Filter Magazine (written by Sessi Kuwabara Blanchard) regarding a new plan by the DEA to expand patient surveillance for drug takers. https://filtermag.org/dea-expand-patient-surveillance/ 6:20 - 12:50 Stanton talks about a recent New York Times article about happiness, depression and suicide. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/24/opinion/happiness-depression-suicide-psychology.html - - - - - - - - - - (Part II -- The Dax Shepard Story) 12:50 - End Today's main story centers around the recent relapse admission of actor, podcaster, and 12-step advocate, Dax Shepard. After 16 years of total abstinence from alcohol and illicit substances, Dax decided to take prescription pain-killers, first as prescribed at first, but then off-script. Stanton and Zach believe that Dax's reasons for initially using prescription narcotics were perfectly logical-- he used them for pain and he used them to feel well! The hosts also believe that Dax -- even though he eventually used the drugs in a less-than-healthful way-- could have prevented the downsides of his drug use if only he were able to be honest about it (i.e. not felt shame over having used them in the first place). Unfortunately, due to the AA-inspired restrictions that Dax imposed on himself, and the promises that Dax had made to the world (to his fans, to his AA buddies, and to the people in his life), Dax was left needing to hide his drug-taking experience. He was afraid that telling anybody his thought process around taking drugs (to prevent pain and to feel well-- sheesh!) that he would be swiftly rejected an addict who had no control over himself. In reality, Dax probably would have taken the drugs responsibly, and without fearing addiction, if only he had felt comfortable sharing his true thoughts and feelings about the drugs in the first place. But because he's prioritized his allegiance to AA dogma (rather than common sense), Dax isolated himself and played into his assigned identity as a life-long addict. Zach recounts the celebrity's relapse story, as told by Dax Shepard himself on his "Armchair Expert" podcast. Then Stanton and Zach tell a counter-factual version of the story-- a version in which Dax Shepard took an LPP-mindset of life-engagement,, connection, and personal responsibility, instead of an AA-mindset of powerlessness, and victimhood. - - - - - - - - - - FOLLOW US AT THE LIFE PROCESS PROGRAM LPP MAIN WEB SITE - https://lifeprocessprogram.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram Twitter: http://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm Facebook: http://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram Email us - info@lifeprocessprogram.com Text us - +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message

They select two more prominent non-12-step “recovery” stories — these with “addicts” who, themselves, were earmarked for hell — Lindsay Lohan and Robert Downey Jr. Lohan seemed doomed by her alcoholism (according not only to her father, but seemingly Oprah). She instead partnered in a group of beach clubs, made borscht and helped her mom and younger siblings. Downey, who was really at the bottom of the well after years of turmoil, drug use, and coerced rehab, in his late thirties had a Jewish wedding which did the trick. (Dr. Peele actually met Mr. Levin, his father-in-law, in a hotel breakfast line.) Zach and Stanton do these stories in anticipation of a podcast Ethan Nadelmann has solicited Dr. Peele's inputs for, in which he will interview famous drug users. Not hobnobbing with the famous, they instead use public material to describe famous people’s paths to recovery, starting with Drew Barrymore. But it wasn’t true for Robert Hunter (who died last December), and ceased to be true for Bob Weir. And, when tells his truth, he speaks of the burden — not of drugs — but of expressing his counternarrative. III. Elton John movie, Rocketman, does the recovery narrative in spades (being a musician = addict; rehab). But in an interview before movie release with Bernie Taupin, he says (a) music saved him (purpose), and (b) he developed a purpose (AIDS) after meeting Ryan White, before he ever went to rehab. IV. Fitting into the narrative, for oneself and for others. What is lost — a person’s greatest asset — their self. V. Implications for treatment, raising children in families with addictive histories — what narrative will they learn? - - - - - - - - - - Email us - info@lifeprocessprogram.com Text us - +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 LPP MAIN WEB SITE - http://lifeprocessprogram.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram Twitter: http://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm Facebook: http://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message

Episode 33: The Drew Barrymore Story (as told by Zach and Stanton)

Welcome to episode 33! This episode is the audio version of a new weekly segment, produced by LPP and hosted by Stanton Peele and Zach Rhoads, called "Sundays With Stories" Each week, Zach and Stanton tell the story of a celebrity-- well, COUNTER-recovery story. That is: they tell the stories of celebrities who outgrow their addictions, and whose stories actually oppose the standard addiction and recovery bromides that we've all been told. This week's celebrity: Drew Barrymore! (More on "Sundays with Stories" below): - - - - - - - - - - Stanton Peele and Zach Rhoads, an addiction and a child development specialist respectively, converse about the realities of addiction and substance misuse in their Sunday conversations. Stanton and Zach work together in the on-line Life Process Program and in publications like Outgrowing Addiction: With Common Sense Instead of "Disease" Therapy. Their Sunday conversations tap into this overwhelming truth: people have the capacity to overcome addiction. And, in fact (like Zach himself) they regularly do so. How do we know? All life studies of people's substance use show that people successfully come to grips with their addictions. Moreover, people all around you can tell you tales of such natural, developmental recovery. Only they're not "allowed" to tell their stories, for fear of offending the dysfunctional, but all-powerful, recovery community. This reticence extends to the highest levels of media and culture. (Do you know that progressive stalwart Kurt Andersen dutifully explained that George W. Bush invaded Iraq because he quit drinking without AA, and was thus permanently trapped in denial?) Among the many examples of this self-censorship are the cultural icon Drew Barrymore, who People labelled, age 13, America's youngest addict. Barrymore wrote Little Girl Lost, published at age 15, after she had entered rehab and subsequently attempted suicide. But Drew grew up by the time she reached her twenties, then went on to found a winery and become a caring mother and Hollywood power player. Apologizing for “not being in recovery” (she enjoys wine), Drew can only hint at the developmental course that has freed her and the vast majority of those with addictive problems. Hear stories like Drew’s, the silent majority’s, on Peele and Rhoads’ “Sundays With Stories.” In fact, send in your own ideas for future episodes (through any of the channels below: Email: info@lifeprocessprogram.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram Twitter: http://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm Facebook: http://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSYridYK8h1uXu0Gx0Kl2Og LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/life-process-program Call or Text us: (802) 391 - 4360 - - - - - - - - - - Visit the LPP Web Site: https://lifeprocessprogram.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message

Welcome to Episode 28! Today's guest is Mindy Vincent. Mindy is an addiction therapist and social worker; she is the host of the podcast "Therapeutic Madness"; and she is the founder of Utah Harm Reduction Coalition. Mindy spoke with host Zach Rhoads about her history with drug addiction, and how she became a harm reduction practitioner and advocate. Sadly, Mindy's sister died of a drug overdose in 2014. As if that weren't enough, her brother was also using drugs destructively at the time. At that time, Mindy had already overcome her own addiction, and she believed that traditional treatment models were the recovery gold-standard. But she noticed that her brother wasn't responsive to such ideas. So she temporarily abandoned her training in 12-steps and recovery programs, and did what was commonsensical-- she showed her brother unconditional love and always kept an open line of communication with him. She didn't know it at the time, but she was practicing harm reduction (something that she learned about and became immersed in later on). Happily, both Mindy and her brother are living their best non-addicted lives and Mindy has established herself as an entrepreneur, a professional, and a highly regarded leader in the harm reduction field. Welcome to Episode 26! On today's program, Zach Rhoads speaks with Daniel Snyder. Daniel Snyder lives in Langley, British Columbia where he is a project and peer coordinator at Langley Overdose Response. He is also the founding creator of Mindful Hope, a hub of resources regarding harm reduction and sensible drug policy. Daniel Snyder also overcame a heroin addiction which lasted 15 years. It was only after attending, being perplexed by, and "failing" at 12-step recovery programs that he found SMART Recovery. He is now living his best life, and does not consider himself "in recovery" -- a term that he broadly respects, but which he rejects as a descriptor of his own life experience. Some discussion points from the episode: Daniel's story of overcoming addiction Re-defining / refining concepts like "recovery" and "relapse" The positive aspects of the harm reduction approach taken by many American counties / cities / states around the U.S. and Canada The downsides of some of these policies (to the extent that "one-size-fits-all" policies lead to unintended consequences The quasi-religion of the disease model of addiction Understanding drug benefits/the reasonable place that drugs (even illicit drugs) can have in a person's life. Today’s episode is an excerpt from a conversation between LPP coach Zach Rhoads and developmental psychologist and Best-Selling author Dr. Ross Greene. Zach asked Dr. Greene to talk about his strategy for working collaboratively with children whose behavior presents challenges to themselves and/or to others around them. The model is called Collaborative and Proactive Solutions. This model ensures that all parties— kids AND adults— act according to the wants and needs of all involved. Of course, this is not a direct link to addiction-related problems, but the methods and tools of problem-solving that Ross Greene describes in this episode are precisely the ways we work with clients in the Life Process Program, and it’s the way we encourage clients to work through problems with others in their lives. - - - - - - - - - - Contact The Life Process Program Email us - info@lifeprocessprogram.com Text us - +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 LPP MAIN WEB SITE - http://lifeprocessprogram.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram Twitter: http://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm Facebook: http://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram - - - - - - - - - - Learn More About Dr. Greene's Work http://livesinthebalance.org --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message

Tune in for all the details of this compelling and passionate conversation.

Zach Rhoads is a counselor who works with families and children. Along with the psychologist Stanton Peele he has coauthored Outgrowing Addiction, a new book that explains why a developmental model of the disorder makes more sense than the disease model. The book draws on Zach's personal experience with addiction and on his work with children in highlighting the often overlooked fact that the natural course of addiction, like with childhood behavioral issues, is to grow out it. Dr. Stanton Peele and Zach Rhoads answer the following frequently asked question: Is LPP a "trauma informed program"?  They offer a definition of “trauma” in several contexts. Then they discuss differences between traumatic events and adverse conditions in life. Peele and Rhoads also consider what it means to be trauma informed versus believing trauma is responsible for addiction.  And, of course, the hosts explain how all of this information applies to their work with clients in the Online Life Process Program.    Visit the Life Process Program website  for free multimedia resources about addiction.
