Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid drug that is approved by the FDA for use as a pain reliever and anesthetic. It is approximately one hundred times more potent than morphine, and fifty times more potent than heroin. It carries with it a high risk for addiction and dependence. When taken in high doses or when combined with other substances like alcohol or heroin, it is known to cause respiratory distress and death. Chances are, all of us know of a family that's been impacted by fentanyl addiction and or overdose. These stories are alarming enough, but adding to our concerns over Fentanyl is the fact that fentanyl poisonings among teens ages thirteen to nineteen were up over fifteen-hundred percent. In 2023, forty-five percent of these poisonings were life-threatening, meaning that these kids could have died without treatment. Sixty-six percent of these occurred when kids were using the drug to get high. Parents, this is a drug use trend we need to notice and address.

My guest is Tom Segura, renowned comedian, writer, actor and director. We discuss the “how-to” of comedy writing and storytelling, and what the science of humor and the creative process reveal about human emotion and memory. We explore why surprise and the act of "saying the unspoken truth" activate the brain's reward circuits, as well as the subconscious mechanisms that shape our sense of what is funny. The episode also examines the bi-directional influence between comedy and cultural standards. It will interest anyone curious about the science of humor, the art of performance and emotional contagion. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. As a certified grief recovery specialist, mental health professional, and diversity coach, I've spent the last 8 years walking side-by-side with those in addiction recovery—and I've learned a truth we don't talk about enough: Unresolved grief is often the silent root of addiction. In this episode of the Feel Free Again podcast, Cole James and I explore the deeply emotional link between loss and substance use. We discuss the real-life stories behind recovery, the overlooked pain of caregivers, and why so many of us silently carry grief until it breaks us. I also share personal experiences, including: ✅ My late father's 14-year sobriety journey beginning at age 77 ✅ Using food to cope with childhood pain ✅ The moment I almost left this work because of a client's suicide—and how the grief recovery method helped me heal and return stronger Whether you are in recovery, love someone who is, or work on the frontlines of grief and trauma, this conversation offers a safe space—and tangible hope.

It's an overcast Saturday morning in late March and Station 20 West, located on 20th Street West and Avenue L South, is buzzing with activity.People have gathered to learn more about Naloxone, how to safely administer it to someone overdosing from opioids, and to talk about what can be done to help our community get through this difficult point in time.Saskatoon's drug and overdose crisis has been all over the news. A CBC story notes the Saskatoon Fire Department has responded to 935 overdose incidents or suspected opioid poisonings since the start of the year. That's compared to 376 incidents in the same time period last year. The Saskatoon Library closed two branches for a month over safety and overdose concerns, and Prairie Harm Reduction, which we have featured on the podcast several times, temporarily paused its operations in March to give its staff an opportunity to deal with the trauma they are seeing every day in our city. I think the local media and the Hard Knox Talks podcast have done an exemplarily job of telling the stories amidst this crisis, and I struggled to find a way to get into the crisis through the podcast. Then I learned about this gathering at Station 20 West and thought there might be some people who would be willing to share their stories. So my wife and I went on this Saturday morning and we met some pretty incredible people. We also learned how to administer Naloxone, which you will hear in this episode. We met Colleen Christopherson-Cote, Board Chair for Station 20 West, University of Saskatchewan doctoral candidate, Maryellen Gibson, and Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Saskatchewan, Barbara Fornssler. My sincere thanks to them for sharing their passion for helping others and their community in this episode. The grip of addiction tears through families like a silent hurricane, leaving behind shattered relationships and broken promises. In this raw, vulnerable episode, we dive deep into what it truly means to love someone battling addiction – and the impossible choices that love sometimes demands.Through a daughter's heartbreaking journey growing up with addicted parents, we witness the devastating ripple effects that spread through generations. From enduring physical abuse as a child to protect her younger brother, to the repeated cycle of hope and disappointment as an adult trying to help her mother find sobriety, her story illuminates the complex reality faced by millions of families across America. What makes this conversation so powerful is its unflinching honesty about the hardest truth many never acknowledge: sometimes walking away is the only path to survival. "I wanted her happiness more than she did," she shares – a realization that ultimately led to setting boundaries that saved her own life and helped her build the family she never had but always deserved. This episode doesn't offer easy answers because there aren't any. Instead, it provides something more valuable – the permission to prioritize your own wellbeing, the understanding that you cannot save someone who doesn't want to be saved, and the hope that by sharing our darkest struggles, we might become the light that guides others toward healing.Whether addiction has touched your life directly or you know someone fighting this battle, this conversation will forever change how you understand the disease that makes someone "too selfish to see the havoc they've created or care about the people whose lives they've shattered."If you found value in today's show please return the favor and leave a positive review and share it with someone important to you! https://www.sharethestrugglepodcast.com/reviews/new/Find all you need to know about the show https://www.sharethestrugglepodcast.com/Official Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100077724159859Join the 2% of Americans that Buy American and support American Together we can bring back American Manufacturing https://www.loudproudamerican.shop/Loud Proud American Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LoudproudamericanLoud Proud American Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/loud_proud_american/Loud Proud American TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@loud_proud_americanLoud Proud American YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmYQtOt6KVURuySWYQ2GWtwThank you for Supporting My American Dream!

The cannabis available today is dramatically stronger than what existed in previous decades, with THC levels climbing from 1% in 1970 to 25-30% in 2025, creating serious risks particularly for young people who don't understand appropriate dosing. Dr. Grover shares how cannabis has been deliberately bred for higher potency and how new extraction techniques have created products with astronomical THC levels, leading to dangerous situations like young people consuming 60 times a reasonable dose.• Cannabis potency has increased from 1% THC in 1970 to 25-30% THC today through selective breeding• Modern extraction techniques allow THC to be added back into products, creating concentrations as high as 45% and above• A recreational dose of THC is between 2.5-15mg, but products often contain hundreds or thousands of milligrams• "Greening out" or cannabis toxicity causes symptoms like confusion, vomiting, decreased consciousness, and anxiety• Children are especially vulnerable to cannabis toxicity due to smaller body size• Most cannabis toxicity cases resolve within 24 hours with supportive care• Prevention requires understanding appropriate dosing and using cannabis judiciouslyTo contact Dr. Grover: ammadeeasy@fastmail.com
