How I Write

In this episode, How I Write is joined by Erin Hall, a linguistics professor at CSUSB. In our conversation, Dr. Hall and I talk about writing anxieties, talking mannequins, and CSUSB's future Speech Language Pathology Program. I hope you enjoy today's episode!

In this weeks episode, I'm talking to Travis "T.J" Love, also known as The Habitual Wordsmith- T.J is A poet and English M.A Student at CSUSB and in our conversation we talk about his writing inside and outside of school, what he sees for himself in the future and what he has to say to himself in the past in an old tumblr post.  

This weeks episode is an English graduate student round table with guest Madeline Espinoza, Edgar Lopez Anguiano and Isaac Arias. We try to answer the question, “When did you know you were good at writing?” but find out early on that it's not an easy question to answer. The rest of a conversation is a series of questions and responses that tries to find answers. 

In this weeks episode, I talk to Corbyn Wild, an English professor at College of the Desert in Palm Desert California. Corbyn is a CSUSB Alum, where she got her Masters in Composition and Rhetoric. Corbyn and I talk about her time teaching first year composition, student perspectives on writing, and the idea of a student "becoming a student". 

In this episode, Tom Girshin welcomes the new host of How I Write, Jonathan Rivera. Jonathan talks about growing up in the Coachella Valley and about hating writing before learning to love it through his research and work in college. Jonathan also talks about his goals for the future and what themes he hopes to tackle as the host of How I Write. 

Matthew Poole, writer, art curator, and professor of art history, theory, and curatorial studies at California State University, San Bernardino, chats with host George Romero. They discuss the languages of art, the difficult but rewarding journey that is writing, and making the transition to Southern California from London. 

Heather Carrasco, an alum who received her undergraduate and graduate degrees at CSUSB, joins our host, George Romero, to reflect on how her experiences with writing have shaped her academic and professional trajectories. Heather also shares with us how the rigor of writing her master's thesis has helped her succeed professionally.   

Tom Girshin, our current host, welcomes the new host of "How I Write," George Romero. George shares how his varied professional and academic experiences attracted him to both the English MA program at CSUSB and to serve as our new host. As a first-generation American, George talks about how language has shaped his personal story and his future goals.

Rimie Marandy, a CSUSB English M.A. student, talks with host Tom Girshin about how her avid reading of both Eastern and Western authors has left an imprint on her own writing style. Rimie also shares how she had to adapt her writing as she transitioned from an undergraduate psychology major to a graduate student in English, and shares some exciting new projects.

Hosung So, Professor of Kinesiology at California State University, San Bernardino, joins host Tom Girshin to discuss the roles of audience, context, and purpose in his writing process, and how these shape his writing identity. He calls particular attention to style in writing, which he links to the way the writer constructs identity in writing.  He also discusses his experiences as an international scholar, and offers some advice to students here at CSUSB. 

Jacqueline Romano, Assistant Professor of Education at California State University, San Bernardino, joins host Tom Girshin to talk about her journey from learning English alongside her daughter in Kindergarten to her current role as a teacher and researcher. We talk about the many ways writing is a social process, and about how the challenges she faced as a student inform her approach to feedback as a professor.  

Christopher Ryan Hill, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at CSUSB, joins host Tom Girshin to talk about motivation in sports, and in writing. We also discuss setting a writing schedule and coauthoring, and have a few laughs along the way. 

Cati Porter, Executive Director of the Inlandia Institute in Riverside, CA, joins host Tom Girshin to talk about and read from her new book of poetry, The Body at a Loss, and her COVID chapbook with Johnny Bender, Slow Unraveling of Living Ghosts. 

Host Dr. Thomas Girshin speaks with California State University President Tomás Morales about writing as a member of a team, President Morales' growth as a writer, and anti-racist writing work. How I Write is a production of the California State University San Bernardino Writing Intensive Program.
