Yes! You are in! Thank you for joining and when worthy, thank you very much for sharing. Extra thanks for Two Tall for that opening hook. Extra thanks to ThursDudesPM for bringing it last week. As for this round, why do you work? Why are we designed to work and contribute? Here's your mic drop, your hammer coming from a letter written to Thesselonica...We talked about the importance of the Living Word last week. You read it and it reads you. This hit me like hammer this week. Side note, not my first time reading it. I've ready it countless times. Yet that's the Living Word, it can impact you differently at different times in your life. Hence, it's Living. A reading from 2 Thes 3...Have you ever noticed that depression and idleness are closely related? How about addiction and idleness?Col 3:23I always feel good after a hard day's work, work out...ministry outreach. It feels good and overflows the heart to serve. To be of value to others. To be careful, we are not to be workaholics either. Some of us are bad at that too. Resting. We are commanded to Sabbath for balance.Have you seen a divide in the USA? Do we encourage idleness? Do we give people what they want for our power and votes? Do we encourage their addiction? Last week's reading warned us about helping people stumble. Think about that.On the flip side, I serve the homeless. Jesus encourages us to serve the poor, Matt 25:40. To take care of orphans and widows. Yet I don't shower and clothe my neighbors on the streets to keep them there. I don't give them pipes nor syringes. I serve to give them Hope. To get them off the streets and into a life of Purpose. 2 Thes 3 is really one of the mic drops for that. An idle society is a miserable society. For those in the States, you enjoy the fruits of that country by those who worked their butts off and sacrificed. If you think I'm trying to play a particular political angle, I also witness immigrants here in the Coachella Valley working their butts off in the hottest of days. Their work ethic blows me away. Did you know that retirement is not in the Bible? A warning about being a glutton is. God did not just put you on earth to golf, eat and drink. If by chance you are able to retire, good job on your hard work and stewardship. Now you have more time to serve the Lord, his Kingdom and your neighbors. Clearly, I'm not retired. If I could, I would still love and serve others. Whether you are 20 or 70, this may be your wake up call. The Idle Check Engine light may be on.Ending on a prayer note...

About the Guest(s): Ruth Nolan: Ruth Nolan is a distinguished poet, educator, and an ardent desert advocate residing in the Joshua Tree area. With extensive experience living in Coachella Valley and the Mojave Desert, she has become a central figure in desert literature and education. Ruth serves as a Professor of English and Creative Writing at College of the Desert and was honored as the first Mojave Desert Literary Laureate in 2021. She is the editor of "No Place for a Puritan: The Literature of California's Deserts" and the author of "After the Dome Fire". Her work emphasizes the cultural and environmental significance of the desert. Episode Summary: In this compelling episode of "90 Miles from Needles: The Desert Protection Podcast," host Chris Clarke engages in a thought-provoking discussion with Ruth Nolan, examining the impacts of art festivals on the desert community, specifically focusing on the High Desert Art Fair near Joshua Tree. Clarke and Nolan critically analyze the language and intentions behind a recent LA Times article that portrayed Pioneertown's art fair as a cultural mecca, akin to the Hamptons or Marfa. This raised significant concerns among locals about the gentrification and ecological footprint on their cherished desert. Through an insightful conversation, Nolan shares her discontent with the article's portrayal of the desert as an exploitable blank slate, intended as a playground for affluent city-dwellers. Nolan, rooted in a deep appreciation for the desert's unique charm, critiques the growing trend of large-scale cultural incursions that disregard the needs and voices of local residents. The episode further explores the concept of desert protection by urging new inhabitants and visitors to approach the desert with respect and stewardship rather than seeking to transform it into an urban extension. Key Takeaways: Gentrification Concerns: Ruth Nolan expresses concern over the influx of affluent outsiders transforming the Joshua Tree area, highlighting community displacement and environmental implications. Media Influence: The interview critiques media portrayals which often serve as promotional content rather than objective journalism, significantly impacting local perceptions and realities. Local Voices Matter: The need for community involvement and acknowledgment of local voices in discussions about development and conservation is emphasized. Desert's Unique Identity: Nolan advocates for the protection and appreciation of the desert's intrinsic beauty and fragility, pushing back against external visions imposing changes. Environmental and Social Stewardship: Encouraging newcomers to embrace sustainable practices and support local conservation efforts is vital for the desert's future. Notable Quotes: "Ask what you can do for the desert, not what the desert can do for you." – Ruth Nolan "Are we not learning that there's nowhere else to go after this?" – Ruth Nolan "The magic's already here. Just get out of your own head and go listen." – Ruth Nolan "There's a difference between moving here and connecting and respecting, and importing yourself because you have a vision." – Ruth Nolan "Eventually, what had looked like a monotonous expanse of boring, scraggly shrubs reveals itself as a magnificent expanse of boring, scraggly shrubs." — Chris Clarke Resources: The Border Chronicle: What Do Argentina's Disappeared Have to Do With Unidentified Migrants on the U.S.-Mexico Border? While I'm frolicking in Coachella Valley this coming weekend, I'm happy to kick off this week's episode featuring Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Caroline Romano. Since then, she's grown into a versatile artist who moves seamlessly between misty-eyed ballads and fiery alt-rock anthems. If you're drawn to the cinematic storytelling of artists like Gracie Abrams or Holly Humberstone, her new EP, It Took Me Falling, captures that same feeling: the vulnerability, the intensity, and those fleeting butterfly moments of meeting someone new.Make sure to check out Caroline's EP, which is out now everywhere, along with the playlist she curated to go with our conversation. In this episode, Dr. Ann Cheney shares about Unidas por Salud, a community–academic partnership made up of community members, students, and academics working together to advance health equity in underserved communities. This women-led group is transforming care in the Eastern Coachella Valley, where environmental hazards and structural inequity are reducing the quality of health outcomes. Through community-based participatory research, student-led clinics, culturally rooted care, and innovative programs like a medical Spanish curriculum and ancestral nutrition initiatives, this team reveals what happens when research is done in partnership with communities, not on them. We also explore the hard decisions behind ethical leadership, what it means to walk away from funding when trust is compromised, how to share power authentically, and why being an “outsider” requires humility, accountability, and invitation. In the face of policy shifts, fear-driven public health crises, and real-time community needs, you'll hear a moving example of what responsive care looks like when systems fall short. From the corner booth at Skip Paige's Little Bar, the conversation swings from karaoke dreams to the real work of building a thriving arts scene. Singer-producer Scott Coulter shares how his company, Spot-On Entertainment, grew from performing to creating concert experiences for orchestras and performing arts centers nationwide—plus how the Palm Springs Pops Orchestra and Plaza Theatre programming are bringing fresh energy downtown. Photographer-producer Michael Childers adds Hollywood history, personal milestones, and a playful (sometimes outrageous) nostalgia for the Plaza's past, while also reflecting on how AI is expanding creative possibilities in photography and exhibitions. Along the way: stories of Dolly Parton, Broadway paths not taken, the power of live performance as “church,” and why restored venues matter to artists and communities. The episode spotlights friendship, gratitude, and the momentum behind Coachella Valley's cultural renaissance.TakeawaysThe Plaza Theatre restoration isn't cosmetic—it's major infrastructure: sound, air, and artist-first spaces. The Palm Springs Pops Orchestra is anchoring a multi-show series that blends local talent with major guests.Scott Coulter's Spot-On Entertainment evolved from performing into producing concert concepts worldwide.A career “no” (and being ghosted after an audition) can redirect you into building your own platform.Michael Childers' life story mirrors the arc of LGBTQ+ progress—visibility, partnership, and late-in-life marriage.Downtown Palm Springs performing arts drive real economic impact: audiences, restaurants, and nightlife momentum.Live performance is framed as modern “ministry”: connection, healing, and shared language through music.#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #McCallumTheatre #ScottCoulter #MichaelChilders #PlazaTheatre #PalmSpringsPopsOrchestra #SpotOnEntertainment #OneNightInHollywood #PalmSpringsArts #Cabaret #Wicked #AIPhotography #DowntownPalmSprings #LivePerformance

From the coveted corner booth at Skip Paige's Little Bar in Palm Desert, Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans & Randy Florence turns to one of Palm Springs' biggest preservation wins: reopening the Plaza Theatre as a public venue. Architect, preservationist, and former city council member J.R. Roberts recounts how a shuttered landmark nearly became a gutted nightclub, then survived COVID uncertainty and post-pandemic construction inflation. He explains how a pivotal $5 million gift—and a promise that he'd “stay to the end”—reignited the effort, why contractor bids ballooned, and how the city's support helped bridge the gap. The hosts also dig into civic life, small-town politics, and why volunteering locally can change outcomes fast. Finally, Roberts shares how Oak View Group stepped in for programming and management, setting up the theatre for a steady stream of major acts, community events, and economic impact across the Coachella Valley. Along the way, expect laughs, stories, and a candid look at what it takes to save a landmark.Takeaways:The Plaza Theatre's comeback began when a proposed nightclub “gut job” raised preservation alarms.A small early fundraising push stalled during COVID—then the project rebounded dramatically afterward.A transformative $5 million commitment came with one condition: finish the mission, no matter what.Post-COVID construction costs and competitive bids drove the restoration budget far higher than expected.City support helped bridge the financing gap, with payback tied to cash plus economic/tax impacts.Oak View Group became a key partner, bringing resources, marketing reach, and operating expertise.Roberts' path from Sausalito to Palm Springs highlights how local politics can shape a city's character. The episode underscores a simple civic lesson: you can make a difference by showing up locally.#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #McCallumTheatre #SharonLawrence #JRRoberts #PlazaTheatre #PalmSprings #PalmSpringsPlazaTheatre #ArchitecturalPreservation #HistoricPreservation #ArchitecturalRestoration #OakViewGroup #AcrisureArena #HaroldMatzner #DavidLee
