En medio del inicio de los alegatos en el Tribunal Constitucional (TC) por la megarreforma, el subsecretario del Interior, Máximo Pavez, abordó las distintas discusiones institucionales que cruzan la agenda del Ejecutivo, proyectando el rol que jugará el organismo comisionado de velar por la Carta Magna durante el Gobierno de José Antonio Kast.La autoridad descartó dar mayor relevancia a las críticas de la oposición generadas luego de que el biministro del Interior y de la Segegob, Claudio Alvarado, admitiera desconocer el requerimiento presentado por el propio Ejecutivo ante el TC por una norma de la ley miscelánea sobre la reconexión de servicios básicos en zonas de catástrofe."La tramitación de la megarreforma es un proyecto grande que tiene múltiples dimensiones de discusión. El ministro del Interior ha estado siempre en el detalle, no solamente de la construcción técnica sino también de la estrategia legislativa (...) Cuando hay vocerías, estas cosas generalmente pueden pasar y no les asigno mayor importancia", sostuvo Pavez. Respecto al rol del TC, el subsecretario proyectó un uso recurrente de esta vía por parte de los sectores opositores. "El debate constitucional en Chile es permanente. Creo que la oposición va a utilizar bastante el Tribunal Constitucional en estos cuatro años. Tras la reunión que el ministro del Interior, Claudio Alvarado, sostuvo el lunes con los presidentes de los partidos de oposición, donde se presentaron las propuestas de los alcaldes de esos partidos para las compensaciones al Fondo Común Municipal, la senadora Paulina Vodanovic rechazó que el ministro Alvarado planteara que hubo "una actitud lamentable de la oposición" y acusara que se busca "torpedear" el proyecto."Creo que esas palabras no se condicen con el tono de la reunión ni con la conducta que nosotros mostramos de ser firmes en lo que es una posición de política pública respecto de la redistribución, de que no todo Chile termine trabajando para los vecinos del distrito 11 (sector oriente de Santiago). Nosotros en ningún momento fuimos a decir que vamos a obstaculizar, pero así como el ministro del Interior señala que se necesitan dos para dialogar, lo mismo le digo yo", expuso la también presidenta del Partido Socialista.Lautaro Carmona, presidente del Partido Comunista, agregó que "cuando se reúnen personas la expectativa es que esto podría ser un pequeño movimiento que ayude a crear mejores condiciones para mejorar todas las inequidades que tiene la legislación vigente. La gente se abre a una posibilidad, pero no hay ni una disposición, con buena letra, con buen tono. Desde el punto de vista de los contenidos, se mostró una posición inamovible absolutamente a todas las peticiones".Por su parte, el diputado Agustín Romero (Republicanos) ironizó con el conflicto al exponer la firma por parte de municipios a favor de la solución presentada por el Ejecutivo: "Son 162 que están a favor de las compensaciones, comunas ricas como Talca, como Linares, Rengo, veo aquí Sagrada Familia. Yo voy a desdramatizar este tema. Hoy día tienen la responsabilidad los senadores de si quieren o no quieren compensación, y punto. La reforma está aprobada en su gran mayoría. Si quieren compensación, bien. Si no quieren compensación, también bien".El diputado Jorge Guzmán (Evópoli) reforzó lo planteado por Romero: "El proyecto está prácticamente cerrado, los temas ya están avanzados. Invariabilidad tributaria, a mí me hubiese gustado que por ejemplo el Partido Socialista, el PPD votaran a favor de su propuesta, que fue la que acordó el gobierno en invariabilidad tributaria. Los panelistas de El Primer Café valoraron las declaraciones emitidas por el embajador de Estados Unidos en Chile, Brandon Judd, quien calificó como "muy decepcionantes" los juicios emitidos por ministros chilenos -entre ellos los titulares de Agricultura y Defensa- respecto al gravamen arancelario del 12,5% impuesto a Chile por la administración de Donald Trump.El exministro de Hacienda, Nicolás Eyzaguirre, cuestionó severamente que la representación diplomática estadounidense reaccione molesta cuando el país afectado simplemente expresa indignación ante una medida unilateral de carácter proteccionista. "Estados Unidos actúa como un matón, nos ponen un arancel de la noche a la mañana. Es increíble: o sea, el ofensor se da por ofendido", añadió en referencia a los dichos de Judd.El excanciller Ignacio Walker recordó que "hace 20 días, en la reunión del canciller Pérez Mackenna con el secretario de Estado Marco Rubio, el canciller chileno dijo que Estados Unidos es el principal socio estratégico de Chile. Y resulta que 20 días después, ese principal socio estratégico castiga a Chile con un arancel de 12,5%. Con Argentina, Javier Milei; con El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, se fijó un arancel de 10%. Con esos amigos no necesitamos", criticó.La economista Bettina Horst afirmó que "acá quedan, cada vez, más preguntas que respuestas satisfactorias que a uno le permitan entender una lógica más coherente, más predecible, con lo que hoy día se está haciendo desde Estados Unidos". En esa línea, Horst defendió la reacción de los ministros sectoriales señalando que "son preguntas legítimas que hay que hacerse y que yo espero que también se estén haciendo en Cancillería".Mientras que el exministro Cristián Monckeberg puso el acento en la forma en que el embajador interpeló públicamente a las autoridades locales, sugiriéndoles informarse mejor sobre los alcances del TLC. "Él manda al ministro de Agricultura a leer el tratado. O sea, lo trata de ignorante. Le está diciendo: 'Oiga, usted no ha leído, vaya a leerse el tratado, estúdielo y después hable'. Saturday, July 25, Troy: On July 4, 2025, a noisy demonstration was held outside the ICE Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, organized in solidarity with detainees. Protesters set off fireworks, vandalized property, and some engaged in confrontations with law enforcement. One protester, fearing an attack when local police arrived, fired a rifle, with an officer being wounded. The other protestors were accused of rioting, using explosives, and providing material support to terrorism. On June 23, 2026, eight defendants were sentenced to prison for 30 to100 years. One defendant not at the event was given 30 years for simply moving a box of zines and pamphlets at the request of his wife. A week later another three defendants received 15 to 50 years as part of the government's crackdown on anti-ICE protesters. In imposing the draconian sentences, the judge relied on a “deterrence” rationale. On Saturday July 25, from 4 to 6 PM at 386 1st St. in Troy., members of the Dallas-Fort Worth Support Committee and local supporters will hold an informational event, along with the opportunity to write letters to the Prairieland Defendants. Local organizer Kevin talks to Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Arcatao, El Salvador is a small town in the mountains on the border of El Salvador and Honduras. On today's show, host Bert Zipperer speaks with Barbara Alvarado, TJ Hinds, and Claudia Enz about the Madison Arcatao Sister City Project. They talk about the history of the organization and their upcoming 40th anniversary celebration. The Madison Arcatao Sister City Project was founded in 1986 during the Salvadoran Civil War by concerned Madisonians in defense of human rights. The relationship continued after the 1992 Chapultepec Peace Accords that ended the 12 year war during which an estimated 70,000 people were disappeared.  They discuss the US's role in the Salvadoran Civil War and how the people of El Salvador were brutally oppressed. The Sister City Project worked with Salvadoran churches that were steeped in liberation theology to support the people of El Salvador to rise up. Alvarado shares a Salvadoran saying, “solo el pueblo, salva el pueblo,” or only the people can save the people. The current president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has revived the oppression of the Salvadoran people, under the rhetoric of being tough on crime.
