“The starting point is, and the research questions are all framed by: 'We know it's terrible to be fat, but how terrible is it?' Not: 'What would it take to give effective healthcare to fat people?'” says Aubrey Gordon, writer of the new book You Just need to Lose Weight and 19 Other Myths About Fat People, star of the documentary Your Fat Friend, and podcaster of Maintenance Phase. And it's not just healthcare where the alignment of 'fat' with 'unhealthy' - and 'thinner' with 'healthier' - becomes problematic and often very dangerous. "I really don't think people contend with the ways in which they are sending a message to everyone around them that there is a weight limit for people that they will love." Content note: this episode contains discussions of body size, body image, weight, anti-fatness, illness including cancer, diet culture, weight loss - intentional and un - and eating disorders. And there are some category A swears. This is the second of two episodes about the word ‘fat'. In Fatlusionist part 1, Aubrey and I discuss euphemisms for fat, why people avoid saying ‘fat', what else people mean when they say ‘fat' and how it would be quite good if people said ‘fat' as just a descriptive term for ‘fat'. Our Emotional Intelligence Jim Bloodsworth pt 2 As Christians, we are called upon to be strong and courageous, and to persevere through trials and tribulations. However, even the strongest among us can struggle with our emotions, especially during times of difficulty. Low emotional fortitude can manifest itself in many different ways, such as anxiety, depression, anger, and low self-esteem. The good news is that there are several practical steps that Christians can take to strengthen their emotional fortitude and overcome these common issues. And this is especially true for those of us who may not be “spring chickens” anymore. We don't have time to be wasting on “trying” things. We want to provide for our senior years. We want to make sure we have enough to live on and enough to be a blessing to others as well…We want to make sure we are still around when we retire, to enjoy the fruit of our labor and not “leave it for the kids!” Amen! Well, our guest today helps us to do just that! Jim Bloodsworth is the founder of “JJ Seal Group, LLC” and “Abundant Boomers Club Fitness” and he is a certified “Health& Nutrition Life Coach.” Back in October of 2021, he was already helping his clients to prepare for what we see today. He was sharing his outlook on what was coming in posts such as from his Facebook Group: “In the next six to twelve months (we will see) an economic tsunami. The housing market and stock market bubbles will burst in rapid succession…” I think we can look back to the that quote and say, “It has come to pass…” Amen! Jim helps his clients to improve in three main core areas: Physical Health; Mental Health and Financial Health. He is here with us today to give us an overview in these areas and to help you take the first initial steps at, not just surviving – but thriving, Amen! This is part two of a great interview that I know you will get a lot of value from! I know you discuss what is called, “The current emotional climatic divide.” Can you share what that is and how it impacts us? How has the rise in social media contributed to these emotional problems? We even have references to emotions on display in the scriptures. I can think of Moses being angry with the tribes and breaking the Ten Commandments; Jesus taking a whip and turning over tables in the Temple, etc. Would those types of emotional outbursts be considered “OK” as far as we are concerned? Are we to rely upon ourselves to train ourselves to control our emotions? What about discipleship? How does our personal emotions help or hinder our discipleship of others in the Body of Christ? Jim, this has been so interesting. Can you share with our audience a way for them to reach out to you and see if you can help them in improving their “emotional fortitude?” I'll put links to all this down below in the show notes. Folks, emotions are real. There is no need to hide our emotions – but we definitely need to learn how to control our emotions and not allow our emotions to control us! I highly recommend that you drop down into the show notes and click the links there to reach out to Jim Bloodsworth. Just get in touch and have a chat… Praise God! Find out how you can improve your life by learning to control and improve YOUR emotional fortitude. Amen!
This episode is about feeling safe in our bodies by regulating the nervous system. Today's caller, Nicole, struggles to change her body weight and feels she lacks motivation and follow-through to do so. She asks for practical tips on how to shift it and create peace and love within herself. [For show notes, go here: Christinehassler.com/episode402] Nervous system regulation is bringing awareness to our state of being. Meaning, are we in a state of hyperarousal or hypoarousal? Both states can be a trauma response. Trauma, simply defined, is too much, too fast, too soon, or too little for too long. Hyperarousal means we are anxious, constantly bracing ourselves, staying busy and distracted to avoid pain, or we are nervous, vigilant, and possibly aggressive. Hypoarousal means we can be depressed, or we may lack motivation. We can even go into apathy or indifference. Whether it is hyper or hypo, it means we are functioning with an unregulated nervous system. It is hard for people in an unregulated state to be present. A regulated nervous system is when we feel safe inside our body. Yet, it doesn't mean we're in a meditative state and doesn't mean we are a Zen master. For those who grew up in an unsafe or chaotic house, your baseline is not going to be regulated. You can do all the emotional processing in the world to move the trauma and do inner child work but you have to practice a nervous system reset multiple times a day. Elementum Coaching Institute is beginning its 3rd year with a comprehensive 7-month program starting in September 2023. This program is for coaches of all skill levels. Apply to become a certified coach and get a 3-month business bonus at https://elementumcoachinginstitute.com. Consider/Ask Yourself: Do you feel busy all the time and there don't seem to be enough hours in a day? Have you been wanting to release weight but you just can't seem to let it go? Do you know the benefits of self-love and self-care but you can't seem to do them? Did you grow up in a chaotic household and you long for peace and calm in your life? Nicole's Question: She struggles with prioritizing herself, practicing self-love, and having self-worth issues. She wants to lose weight but doesn't understand why she cannot stay motivated to do so. Nicole's Key Insights and Ahas: She attended the Be the Queen program. Her father didn't value overweight people. Her mother was self-critical. She tries to eat healthily and has a gym membership. She loves being outside, dancing, and being with her dog. She is finishing her Master's degree. She finds little time to do the things she loves. Her nervous system baseline is hyper-aroused. She longed for peace and calm in her chaotic childhood home. She focuses on losing weight. She tells herself she will do the things she loves when she loses weight. She is a people-pleaser. How to Get Over It and On With It: Break the pattern of being in a hyper-aroused state. Recalibrate her nervous system with hourly breaks and resets. Check out Style Space and use the promo code Christine10. Create peace and calm in her home and body. Practice transitions and be conscious about her next move. Practice saying no to create space for herself. Takeaways: Find online content about nervous system regulation. Sponsor: StoryWorth — Looking for a meaningful Father's Day gift? In February 2021, pandemic restrictions were just starting to ease in Hawaii, and Leila Mirhaydari was finally able to see her kidney doctor. Transplanted organs need diligent care, and Leila had been looking after her donated kidney all on her own for a year. So a lot was riding on that first batch of lab results. "Immediately, all my levels were just out of whack and I knew that I was in rejection," she says. "I've had to work through a lot of emotional pain, of feeling like I failed my donor. Like, why couldn't I hold on to this kidney?"On today's episode, editor Gabriel Spitzer walks us through Leila's journey — from spending her late 20s on dialysis, to being saved by a gift and ultimately, to the search for another donated kidney. Welcome to the Turning Your Dream Into Green Podcast episode. This Podcast teaches you how to take a dream or goal and make money from it. In this Podcast, I decided to share personal stories about how I Turned My Dream Into Green, giving you examples and references of each step I took. After graduating in late 2016, I had nowhere to live. I started my coaching career in 2017. I grew a brand and business that allows me to work from home that makes a comfortable six figures a year. In the past five years, I experienced every step when it comes to building a brand and small business. I learned how to optimize my editing skills for TikTok videos and started my podcast BeGreatWithNate. My goal with this Podcast is to save you time on mistakes most entrepreneurs make when building a brand, service, or product. When I found out that 99% of businesses market their business wrong, it was mind-blowing for me. In this Podcast, I teach you what successful small businesses and brands do, also known as the one-percenters. While learning how to market myself was very helpful, I also followed spiritual laws that help me stay on this path of growing my own business. In this podcast, you will learn how I used this spiritual practice.
Old Testament: 2 Samuel 1–2 2 Samuel 1–2 (Listen) David Hears of Saul's Death 1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. 2 And on the third day, behold, a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. 3 David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” 4 And David said to him, “How did it go? Tell me.” And he answered, “The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.” 5 Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” 6 And the young man who told him said, “By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him. 7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.' 8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?' I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.' 9 And he said to me, ‘Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.' 10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.” 11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man who told him, “Where do you come from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.” 14 David said to him, “How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?” 15 Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” And he struck him down so that he died. 16 And David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the LORD's anointed.'” David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan 17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it1 should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar.2 He said: 19 “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult. 21 “You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor fields of offerings!3 For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 22 “From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty. 23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions. 24 “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. 25 “How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! “Jonathan lies slain on your high places.26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women. 27 “How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!” David Anointed King of Judah 2 After this David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.” 2 So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 3 And David brought up his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron. 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,” 5 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “May you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. 6 Now may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. 7 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.” Ish-bosheth Made King of Israel 8 But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim, 9 and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezreel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. The Battle of Gibeon 12 Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. And they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. 14 And Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men arise and compete before us.” And Joab said, “Let them arise.” 15 Then they arose and passed over by number, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. 16 And each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent's side, so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim,4 which is at Gibeon. 17 And the battle was very fierce that day. And Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David. 18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle. 19 And Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went, he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is it you, Asahel?” And he answered, “It is I.” 21 Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and seize one of the young men and take his spoil.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. 22 And Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?” 23 But he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner struck him in the stomach with the butt of his spear, so that the spear came out at his back. And he fell there and died where he was. And all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still. 24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. And as the sun was going down they came to the hill of Ammah, which lies before Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon. 25 And the people of Benjamin gathered themselves together behind Abner and became one group and took their stand on the top of a hill. 26 Then Abner called to Joab, “Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that the end will be bitter? How long will it be before you tell your people to turn from the pursuit of their brothers?” 27 And Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely the men would not have given up the pursuit of their brothers until the morning.” 28 So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the men stopped and pursued Israel no more, nor did they fight anymore. 29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, and marching the whole morning, they came to Mahanaim. 30 Joab returned from the pursuit of Abner. And when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing from David's servants nineteen men besides Asahel. 31 But the servants of David had struck down of Benjamin 360 of Abner's men. 32 And they took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was at Bethlehem. And Joab and his men marched all night, and the day broke upon them at Hebron. The New Life 17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!—21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self,6 which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Footnotes [1] 4:8 The Greek word anthropoi can refer to both men and women [2] 4:9 Or the lower parts of the earth? Disassociation is one way that our brain keeps us safe from things that may cause us stress or harm. Whether it's a simple moment of daydreaming or constant state of dissociation in an abusive relationship, being cognitively and physically disconnected is not conducive to healing. During this episode of Trauma Rewired, Jennifer and Elisabeth discuss the spectrum of dissociation and how it can affect the interoceptive system, or how we process and send information to the brain. They go over the symptoms of dissociation, sharing their personal experiences of dissociation related to childhood trauma. Our survival brain sees healing as a threat, but there are ways to rehab the deficits in the nervous system to give more clear information to the brain, helping us to think and see more clearly. For example, training our interoceptive system can fight our hypersensitivity to threats and bring us out of disassociation. To learn what tools can help you retrain your nervous system and the learned conditioned responses that are no longer serving you, tune in to this episode! Topics discussed in this episode: ● Misconceptions about dissociation ● The definition of dissociation and its symptoms ● Dissociation as a protective mechanism ● How the interoceptive system works ● Dissociation and the freeze response ● How dissociation affects the body and how we feel pain ● The link to avoidance behavior ● Tools to bring yourself back from a state of dissociation ● Body dysmorphia and deficits in the visual system ● Living in the body to find a safe place to feel and heal ● Dissociation as an effect of peak somatic experiences Claim your two FREE weeks: https://rewiretrial.com FREE 1 Year Supply of Vitamin D + 5 Travel Packs from Athletic Greens when you use my exclusive offer: www.athleticgreens.com/rewired Interested in becoming a Neurosomatic Intelligence Coach? I've been doing Exodus 90 for the past few years. One of the ascetic practices involves only listening to music that lifts the soul to God. Is this asceticism opposed to listening to popular/secular music? I'm a 22 year old woman in college that has struggled with pornography for a few years. I've realized how porn has affected the way I see my boyfriend whom I'm planning to marry. I'm afraid of entering into marriage with these wounds. Do you have any advice? This is the second episode in a series of episodes I plan on doing with current and former clients. The feedback from the first episode with Dory was so powerful, and I heard you loud and clear: You want to hear from more folks in the messy middle. We talk through her story, including what sparked body image concerns as a child, how food became fraught with anxiety and obsession, the impact of chronic illness on body dissatisfaction, how diet culture makes us feel like our bodies are broken, and how we can learn to stop hiding and instead decide to take up space in this world. Specific topics discussed: How body image is impacted by culture and lack of diversity Damaging diet culture messages during pregnancy Body changes postpartum How wellness culture preys on chronic illness The harm of body compliments Realizing it's not about health, it's about thinness How chronic illness impacts body image and embodiment Not letting your body hold you back from living your life Full Plate is listener-supported (no ads!) so please support the show on Patreon for bonus episodes at Patreon.com/fullplate Patreon is also home to the episode transcripts (which are publicly available to everyone, not just our patrons!). Friends, a recent study from the Pew Research Center found that nearly seven-in-ten Catholics (69%) believe that during Mass, the bread and wine used in communion “are symbols of the body and blood of Jesus Christ.” Only one-third of U.S. Catholics believe in the doctrine of transubstantiation, which says the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Jesus. This is a spiritual crisis, and in response, the United States bishops have launched a three-year Eucharistic revival to help Catholics understand the truth and beauty of this sacrament. On today's episode of “The Word on Fire Show,” Brandon Vogt and I discuss our hopes for the revival and the special resource Word on Fire created to accompany it. Does it matter how much you weigh, what you eat, or if you workout? Does God care how we take care of our bodies? Body positivity is promoted by our culture and that really means it doesn't matter what you look like. Even if you're overweight and your BMI is in the unhealthy zone, you should celebrate the way you look and so should everyone else. And although the Bible does not place value on us by how much we weigh or what we look like, does that mean God doesn't care about a healthy lifestyle? Robin Rhine McDonald is a faith-based holistic health coach and she walks us through what the Bible says about taking care of our bodies and why it's important. We discuss what the Bible says about physical health and healing. The body is not less than the mind and soul. We talk about how the calling and purpose God places in our lives is closely connected with how we steward our bodies.
