How to Break Free from the "Lack Mindset" You Inherited

Randy is back! After a break to welcome a new grandchild, Randy returns with a powerful and vulnerable episode that goes deep into the core of The Gap Thinking Framework. Why do we so often self-sabotage when faced with a new opportunity? Why is our first instinct to say, "I can't" or "I shouldn't"? Randy explains that the answer lies in our "BS" (Beliefs and Stories)—the subconscious programming from our past that dictates our automatic reactions. He shares a deeply personal story about how a "lack mindset" instilled in childhood has held him back for decades, and how it almost stopped him from pursuing a major new business venture just yesterday. In this episode, you'll learn how to identify when you are trapped in a "narrow gap" of old thinking and how to consciously widen that space to choose a different path. Randy challenges the idea that you need to know the "how" before you act, arguing that faith and a belief in your own ability to choose are the real keys to success. This is a masterclass in moving from being a habitual thinker on autopilot to becoming an active thinker who designs their own life. Mentioned in this episode: The Gap Thinking Framework, beliefs and stories (BS), self-sabotage, lack mindset, triggers, narrow vs. wide gap, faith, decision-making, Henry Ford quote, personal development. Ready to identify the patterns that are holding you back? Take the free Gap Thinking Framework Assessment at richmind.co     Key Takeaways: The Gap Thinking Framework is about controlling the critical split-second window between a trigger (stimulus) and your reaction. Most of our life is lived on autopilot, but we can't afford to let our big life decisions be made by habitual thinking. Your "BS" (Beliefs and Stories) are the subconscious programs, often formed in childhood, that dictate your automatic reactions to new opportunities. A "narrow gap" occurs when you instantly revert to old, safe beliefs of "I can't" or "I shouldn't," leading to self-sabotage. You don't need to know the "how" before you take action. The key is to step out in faith and belief, and the resources will appear. Randy shares a transparent example of being triggered by an old "lack mindset" while researching a new business venture and how he overcame it. The famous Henry Ford quote, "Whether you believe you can, or believe you can't, either way, you're correct," is the foundation of this episode.     Questions Answered in This Episode:   Why has there been a break in the podcast episodes? (Hint: A new grandbaby!) How do my childhood beliefs and stories affect my adult decisions? What is a "narrow gap" and how does it lead to self-sabotage? Why do I automatically think "I can't" when presented with a big opportunity? How can I stop letting my past define my future? What do I do when I'm triggered by fear and doubt? Why don't I need to know the full plan before I take the first step? How can I shift from being a "habitual thinker" to an "active thinker"?     Key People, Concepts, & Terms: People: Randy Wilson, Henry Ford, David Neagle. Concepts: The GAP, Gap Thinking Framework, Beliefs and Stories (BS), Self-Sabotage, Triggers, Patterns, Narrow Gap vs. Wide Gap, Habitual vs. Active Thinking, Faith, Lack Mindset, Abundance.

Habitual drug use in the United States is at least as old as the nation itself. Elizabeth Kelly Gray's book Habit Forming: Drug Addiction in America, 1776-1914 (Oxford UP, 2023) traces the history of unregulated drug use and dependency before 1914, when the Harrison Narcotic Tax Act limited sales of opiates and cocaine under US law. Many Americans used opiates and other drugs medically and became addicted. Some tried ‘Hasheesh Candy', injected morphine, or visited opium dens, but neither use nor addiction was linked to crime, due to the dearth of restrictive laws. After the Civil War, American presses published extensively about domestic addiction. Later in the nineteenth century, many people used cocaine and heroin as medicine. As addiction became a major public health issue, commentators typically sympathized with white, middle-class drug users, while criticizing such use by poor or working-class people and people of color. When habituation was associated with middle-class morphine users, few advocated for restricted drug access. By the 1910s, as use was increasingly associated with poor young men, support for regulations increased. In outlawing users' access to habit-forming drugs at the national level, a public health problem became a larger legal and social problem, one with an enduring influence on American drug laws and their enforcement. What do the 40 most-played classic rock songs of 2025 say about our listening habits? We dive into the national radio data and find a universe powered by stadium anthems, late-70s polish, and 80s hooks, with Bon Jovi and Guns N' Roses dominating the top slots. Along the way, we weigh personal favorites against programming realities, marvel at why Crazy Train still feels underplayed, and ask the big question: how did an entire decade—the 60s—slip off the radar of “classic” rock radio? We move through the countdown with stories that make the rankings come alive. Journey's Separate Ways sparks a detour into a real arcade cabinet that blasted the song over the din of pinball halls. Dream On proves that timing can make a hit, not just songwriting. Paradise City's slow climb shows how long-tail momentum works. We connect radio staples like We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, Tom Sawyer, and Summer of '69 to the places they still thrive: arenas, movies, and algorithm-friendly nostalgia loops. We spotlight Joan Jett's Bad Reputation and its punk-royalty cameos, the contested legacy of Ozzy's Shot in the Dark, and the enduring charge of Jane's Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual, from the famous dog bark to the towering solo on Three Days.If classic rock to you includes Hendrix and The Who, or if your heart lives in late-80s power choruses, this one will challenge your map and maybe redraw it. In this concluding Mussar Masterclass (Day 118) on Orchos Tzaddikim's Gate of Silence, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the remaining three (of five) destructive forms of mockery (leitzanut) that block the Divine Presence:Mocking beneficial deeds/activities without intent to shame—arrogantly rejecting what one doesn't personally value, leading to scorning mitzvot and eventual heresy; mockers reject rebuke and have "no hope."Habitual idle mockery (e.g., "corner dwellers" seeking laughs)—wastes time, increases sin, neglects Torah study, and incurs double loss (committing evil while missing good).Jesting mockery for entertainment (e.g., late-night shows)—lightens serious matters, leads to excessive drinking, weakens mitzvah observance in oneself and others, and desensitizes to holiness.Mockery ultimately backfires measure-for-measure ("do not mock lest your affliction worsen"), discourages mitzvot, and can lead to heresy—except when mocking grave sins like idolatry to deter others. The rabbi warns against habitual joking that erodes inspiration and clarity, urging silence to preserve reverence. The Gate of Silence concludes; next week begins the Gate of Falsehood.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 1, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on January 15, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Share your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism. If you look at the successful people in the world, they have a few things in common.   They strategized, planned, worked, and then published the outcome of their work.   From the railroad tycoons of the Americas to the car manufacturers like Henry Ford, they all had something in common.........they shared their secrets to success after doing the work.    In my life, setting up myself for success operates on one condition........that I put it on the calendar.    I get up in the morning, hit the gym and get a work out in whether I want to or not.   I get into work and put my head down.  My main objective is to get everything done so I can get home and go see my family.    Have family dinners.    Attend date nights.   Take vacations.    If you want to be successful, you have to get into the habits of doing the simple things, the unsexy things every single day.    About the ReWire Podcast   The ReWire Podcast with Ryan Stewman – Dive into powerful insights as Ryan Stewman, the HardCore Closer, breaks down mental barriers and shares actionable steps to rewire your thoughts. I was recently with a group that got me thinking about all of you and how we get into habits—habits that are so comfortable we don't even notice them. We get into habitual thinking and habitual energy. Habitual energy is something that spins and spins, and we don't break free from it very often. We also develop habitual ways of allowing ourselves to get away with less than what we're truly capable of.   Our habits aren't just mental or learned—they're energetic. Every time you're around a group of people who are elevated, striving, and pushing forward, it elevates your energy too. And it can elevate your habits, as long as you implement those shifts right away.   But here's the thing—your existing habits often want to keep you where you are. Maybe you eat a lot of sugar, and it's easy to eat more but not easy to stop. Or maybe you want to eat better, but you check out mentally or emotionally, and the old habit kicks in—you eat what's comfortable and familiar.   Our habits live in our energy. When you go to a new place or join a mastermind or energy training—like the ones we host a few times a year—it helps dislodge those stuck patterns and lift you to another level.   Here at Siobhan Moran Land—or Epic Life Land, whatever you want to call it—we do the “woo woo” and the “moola.” Together, that makes “Woolah.” The Woolah habit is about blending the spiritual and the practical and focusing on one thing—the one thing that will move the needle for many other things.   That one habit shift can be more powerful than trying to change everything at once. Because when you try to change it all, you risk falling into trauma, paralysis, or procrastination.   So shake things up. Take a trip. Interact with new people. Do things that are a little uncomfortable. Drive in a different direction. Change the habit, change the result. Change the idea, change the energy. Change the habit, and you'll change your life.   Check out more about habits on our blog at siobhanmoran.com. And post below—what habit are you stuck in, and what habit do you want to get out of? Maybe it's listening to junk radio or junk podcasts because they're easy and addictive. But what if you changed that for a week, a day, or even a month?   The habit you create is the one that will activate you and help you take that next step. See you in your next habit. I hope one of those habits is checking out my podcast and our YouTube channel. When you're stuck, frustrated, or just not happy with how things are going, sometimes the most impactful first step is to flip what you've been doing. It sounds obvious, but breaking away from old routines can open the door to real growth.I share how comfort keeps us tied to patterns even when they don't serve us, and why identifying frustration isn't enough on its own. Change happens when you're willing to step into something different, even if it's just testing the opposite of what you're used to. Often the answer isn't at one extreme or the other, but somewhere in the middle. This episode is about giving yourself permission to experiment, break monotony, and discover the opportunities waiting for you in between. Please share this episode with anyone you think would be interested in listening to it.Visit darylperrypodcast.com for links to the show page on each of the major podcast directories. (Spirit Rock Meditation Center) We begin with a review of how the Buddha saw "ignorance" of the basic nature of things (not so much of facts or information) as the basic problem of human life; we are as if asleep, caught in dream-like living, and need to "wake up." For the Buddha, we are especially ignorant about impermanence, dukkha (or reactivity--grabbing at the pleasant and pushing away the unpleasant or painful and believing that this is the way to happiness), the nature of the self, and nirvana or awakening. We bring in a brief report of the experience of attending the previous week's EcoDharma retreat at Spirit Rock, emphasizing especially the pervasiveness of a sense of separation--from the earth, other living beings, and each other--and the connection of such sense of separation with our systemic problems. Indigenous teachers at the retreat particularly emphasized living without such separation. The second part of the talk, we focus on the teaching of not-self (anatta), and ways of practicing that deepens our understanding of not-self, as well as how we hold this understanding of pervasive human ignorance with compassion and kindness, including in our responses to the manifestations of ignorance. The talk is followed by discussion.
