Jessica is a brand alchemist, working to advance the goals and vision of companies through brand stories that resonates both internally and externally. Jessica has worked with nonprofits and design agencies, and she freelanced remotely while traveling with Remote Year in 2016. She now works at an Africa-first startup helping place software engineers.

Martin Smith is a Site Reliability Engineer for HashiCorp, a remote-first company that solves development, operations, and security challenges in Cloud infrastructure. Martin previously worked in software engineering at Rackspace and the University of Florida. In 2016, with his remote job at Rackspace, Martin spent a year traveling the world with Remote Year.

Maya Yette is a recovering lawyer turned operations and strategy professional. She grew up in a suburb of Washington DC, studied communications and journalism, and has a law degree from Harvard University. After working at a DC corporate law firm, she traveled with Remote Year and worked at Travel Noire. Now based back in DC, she works at Choice Hotels.

Jono Lee is a product designer and engineer who enjoys building products people love. Jono has been working with computers since he was a teenager, founded 2 startups after college, was a product designer at Disqus, and has started another company, Wanderium, a smart all-in-one travel assistant.

In this episode, I talk to Tarryn about her work in digital marketing. She’s been interested in business, marketing, and entrepreneurship since high school — and she’s really good at it.I first interviewed Tarryn over 2 years ago while we were working remotely & traveling together with Remote Year. We spoke about her education, internships, work experience, and what marketing even is. We did a followup interview in 2019 and talked about her new job working for a VR / extended reality company.

Rebecca Rubin is a feel-good marketing coach for women entrepreneurs and runs her own business, The Pursuit of Fabulous. In this interview, we discuss what a marketing coach is, how Rebecca built her business up from side hustle to full-time, and how she works with her clients remotely - both from her home base in DC and while traveling the world. She also talks about the surprising consequences of being on Remote Year and her advice for people who think what they want isn’t possible for them.

Arestia Rosenberg is a filmmaker and writer with 10+ years experience in major motion pictures/television, advertising, and creative direction in media. She was a member of Remote Year’s third group, Cousteau, and is working on a new documentary about Tiny Toones, a hip hop school for at-risk youth in Cambodia.

Katy Fowler is a freelance translator, working from German and Italian into English. She was a member of Remote Year’s second group, Battuta, and lives in Hampshire, England. She studied languages and translation & interpretation, worked at a bird park and as a tour guide throughout Europe, did interpretation for the European Union, and is now a translator.

The New York Times released a job posting: a writer to visit the destinations listed in their 52 Places to Go in 2017. Their Facebook post announcing it went viral, and thousands of people must have applied. But it isn’t the dream vacation it appears to be at first glance.

Laura Hansen is a freelance graphic designer & owner of LaHa Design. She was a member of Remote Year’s second group, Battuta, and now lives in Columbus, Ohio. In this interview, we discuss her education at SCAD, her work at advertising agencies in Dallas and New York, going freelance and founding LaHa Design, and case studies of several of her projects, including the Remote Year Battuta Yearbook.

Jason travels the world with Remote Year, helping to ensure a seamless journey for their Remotes. He was the Operations Manager for Battuta, Remote Year's second group, from February 2016 - January 2017, and is now a Programs Team Manager. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling to new places, going hiking, and meeting street dogs.

Alondo Brewington is an independent software developer, currently focused on mobile and Mac applications. In this interview, we discussed his education, career, developing mobile apps, experience on Remote Year, travels, the digital nomad lifestyle, and more. Alondo has been exploring the physical and business worlds for the past 2 years and shares his experiences on his blog, The Cocoa Nomad. He was a member of Remote Year’s second group, Battuta.

Chrissy Barnum is a consultant at Accenture, where she's focused on strategy consulting for large nonprofit organizations. Outside of Accenture, Chrissy writes about social entrepreneurship on her blog, Impact Beacon. She was also a member of Remote Year in 2016.
