So often, when people think about risky play, they think about physical risk. In this episode of The Everything ECE Podcast, Laura Hansen presents the concept of social-emotional risky play in early childhood education. Children need to be emotionally ready to take risks before they physically take that risk. In addition, educators also need to be emotionally ready to support children's risky play. This episode is a great way to self-reflect on your own feelings about risky play and how you can support yourself and your students.

The ALA defines digital literacy as "the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills."  We discuss the many other definitions of the term and get into what responsibilities educators have to cover this topic.Disciplinary literacy aims to apprentice students into the specialized literacy practices of each of the disciplines—practices usually only developed by those immersed in the creation of knowledge in the disciplines. We discuss why this skill is so important and how it differs from content area reading.Our guest, Laura B. Today we're talking about how the legal field affects the LGBTQIA+ community, and what we can do to better advocate for this community going forward, professionally and personally. My guest is Jess Couser, a fellow Utah family law attorney. She identifies as bisexual and works hard to represent other members in the LGBTQ community.Show Notes:Jessica (Jess) Couser practices law in areas of custody, divorce, parentage, enforcement, child support, adoption, protective orders, guardianship, LGBTQ law, and more. She and her cofounder, Laura Hansen, founded Just Law in 2010 (Millcreek and downtown SLC, Utah, offices), with the goal of providing clients excellent, ethical, and family-focused legal representation. Jess believes that family law matters require legal skill and strategy, but that they also require compassion, creativity, and fortitude. Family law attorneys should have specific knowledge of child development, trauma, communication and coping mechanisms, and they should be prepared to advocate for and educate every client on the legal and practical matters they may be facing. Jess believes the biggest challenge the LGBTQ+ community probably faces today is the mainstream political platforms and figures that are still comfortable advocating to reverse the Obergefell V Hodges supreme court case (legality of same-sex marriage), which would affect families in the queer community. Also issues of transgender laws for individuals and their parents and children, and issues of family planning for same-sex couples.“Verification of appropriate treatment by a medical provider” is the verbiage the Utah Supreme Court gave for what is needed before granting the gender marker change on birth certificates. This just means the individual has consulted with a medical provider and that provider agrees the transition treatment is appropriate.Both surrogacy and adoption required being single or in a heterosexual marriage in Utah before 2015.How can we all be better allies?Ask questions. People are usually willing to have honest communication when you are open.Language is important and impacts who you're communicating with, but not so important you shouldn't feel like you can't ask if you don't know.Don't let your own insecurities keep you from being kind to others.

10th place to visit was Kuurna, in the Kruunuhaka district of Helsinki. This restaurant has been here for a good while, but has recently been given new life by the couple taking over: Laura and Tom Hansen. Together dining out this evening with me was Petteri Heino from Intel whom I've gotten to know through a joint project where we were researching how AI is being used by Finnish companies. Petteri's approach for doing business development is merited from his history of working with a number of large American IT companies, which definitely alongside his perspective on the future of technology, made for an interesting table conversation.  This fine bistro has great character thanks to the food, but also due to the venue. Beautiful archs in the ceiling makes for romantic atmosphere, but it certainly makes for a great place to go deep in complicated business topics. The menu itself changes every 2 weeks, so no wonder they have a loyal base of customers. I actually got my first recommendation to go to Kuurna from a person who had been there more than 10 times. After the dinner, I can see why.   We got to pick between 3 starters, 3 main courses and 3 desserts. I did whitefish tartar, Salmon and coffee bean-raspberry goodness. Every single dish was flawless, as we've come to expect at any top 50 restaurant. What was striking was the way the food was presented - so beautiful while tasty.  I'd recommend this for either business lunch/dinner or romantic getaway with a flawless bistro food served in a great setting. You'll also hear a quick comment from the other co-owners of Kuurna, Laura Hansen.

In this episode I sit down with Jacob and Laura Hansen, owners of Saddle Mountain Brewing Company in Goodyear. A pal of mine Luis Herrera who also happens to be the Beer Ambassador for SMBC even joins us near the end of the episode. Up until they opened up SMBC there were no breweries in Goodyear. With a little tenacity and help from an awesome member of the city council they were finally able to make history. In this episode we talk about their journey and how this city council member now has a beer named after him at the brewery.
