Are you ignoring a pain that's silently sabotaging your success and happiness? In today's episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy explores the consequences of ignoring physical and emotional pain. She shares a personal story of neglecting her physical pain and its impact on her life. Dr. MacCarthy emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing pain rather than masking it with anger or distraction. You'll learn how to recognize the deeper emotions beneath anger and develop strategies to manage emotional pain, even in high-pressure situations like dental practice.Reference:Wager, T. D., et al. (2013). An fMRI-based neurologic signature of physical pain. The New England Journal of Medicine, 368(15), 1388-1397. This study applied painful heat to participants' forearms and used fMRI to measure neural responses, which were then compared with those associated with emotional pain. They found significant overlap in brain areas involved in both pain types, suggesting shared neural circuitry. The anterior insula and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex were notably involved.Show notes:(2:13) The dangers of ignoring physical and emotional pain(6:29) How pain limits success and impacts work-life balance(8:40) Anger as a mask for deeper emotions(12:19) Identifying and addressing underlying emotions(16:29) Managing anger and frustration in high-pressure situations(18:02) When anger perpetuates pain rather than healing it(19:11) Strategies for acknowledging and addressing emotional pain(21:50) OutroIMPORTANT LINKS:Join the Easiest Holiday Season Ever Workshop on Nov 22nd (12-2 pm EST) and earn 2 PACE AGD CE credits. What followed was a journey of reclamation of the self she had disconnected from decades earlier. 5 years later she would go on to open a scratch-start practice and grow it to be the largest Invisalign practice in her state.
