Wine as a subject can be an incredibly intimidating conversation to engage in. Part art, part science, it leaves so much to subjectivity, and yet there are thousands of grapes, terms, regions, production methods and other things to know so that you can form those opinions! If you are generally interested in wine, I highly recommend the WSET program. Going through it gave me the basis I needed to understand what I was drinking and to vocab needed to express it. However, the discussion of natural wine was non-existent when I did my coursework (though I’ve heard they added a section on orange wine) so as an additional resource, here are the 25 terms you are most likely to hear in reference to natural wine so that you can be prepared to understand what everyone is talking about and describe what you’re finding in the wine. Let’s dive in to how you can know! Find the blog and resources here: https://throughthegrapevine.co/blogs/no-mog-blog/how-to-know-if-a-wine-is-natural

What Does Natural Wine Taste Like?

If you haven't tried natural wine before, you “naturally” (get it?) might wonder what it tastes like! After all, there’s a lot of stories about there about it tasting like cider, dirt, vinegar, and worse. However, just like all wines, some can be well-made and delicious, and others can be terrible! So, what does natural wine taste like? The quick and easy answer is that natural wine can taste like anything from traditional grape expressions, where you don’t even know it was made naturally, to a bit more wild. This is usually where the word funk or funky is used and we’re going to work to be specific about funk throughout this article so that you can know what it is your tasting and whether you like it or not!
