California, once a powerhouse of domestic energy production, now finds itself increasingly reliant on foreign fuel sources. Driven by stringent environmental regulations and policies that have led to the closure of numerous refineries, the state is now importing fuel to meet its energy demands. This shift raises critical questions about energy independence and the true cost of California's climate initiatives. Is this a sustainable path forward, or are these policies undermining the state's energy security and driving up costs for consumers? We explore the implications of California's energy policies and their impact on the state's economy and its citizens. It's time to examine the facts and ask: Are California's green dreams turning into an energy nightmare?

A potential insurance policy for those who can't move away from gas for energy, as the Government charges ahead with its plans for an importing facility. The terminal will be housed in Taranaki - with the Government aiming to have a build contract locked down mid-year. Most organizations are built to do exactly what they do…and that's the problem. When a core business starts to decay due to disruption, automation, or shifting customer demand, the instinct is to double down on efficiency, cost cutting, and short-term fixes. But that focus often crowds out the harder, riskier work of building what comes next. Nearly a decade ago, Dual Transformation offered a clear and compelling framework for this dilemma, yet nobody seems to be actually doing it. In this episode, Rodney Evans and Sam Spurlin unpack why dual transformations are so rare, why it's even harder than it sounds, and why it matters more than ever in an AI-shaped economy. They dig into the tensions between “business A” (the core) and “business B” (the future), the funding and operating system traps that kill new growth, and practical moves leaders and internal change agents can make to actually pull of two transformations at once instead of just talking about it. -------------------------------- Ready to change your organization? The government has announced a new liquified natural gas import terminal - and is promising lower power prices will come as a result. Energy Minister Simon Watts spoke to Corin Dann.
A proposed multi-million dollar liquefied natural gas import facility is winning support from electricity companies. The terminal will be housed in Taranaki, with the Government aiming to have a "build" contract locked down mid-year. It expects it will save each household about $50 a year once up and running – from late next year at the earliest. Contact Energy's Mike Fuge told Mike Hosking it removes the drama of the system. He says when suppliers and gas users can't get gas, everyone gets very uptight, and this brings a rationality to the market, so we aren't worrying about tomorrow. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's confidence a new gas importing facility will deliver benefits that outweigh the costs. The Government's confirmed it will build a liquefied natural gas import facility in Taranaki, with a contract expected by mid-year. It says the project will save the country about $265 million annually – roughly $50 per household. Energy Minister Simon Watts told Mike Hosking that Huntly Power Station only covers 50% of the energy problem, and while they have gas generation capacity out there, they don't have the fuel to run it during dry years. He says it's why they need that certainty of volume and certainty of supply. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Government is contracting to build a liquefied natural gas import facility, as a reliable backup fuel source. It's expected to save the country about $265 million a year, equivalent to about $50 per household. Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper explains the project further. The Union Budget can signal this transition by allocating fewer resources to surplus management and more toward enabling diversification, while acknowledging that short-term price controls can undermine long-term capacity. In this episode of the FreightWaves Morning Minute, we discuss how activist investor Ancora carves out a niche in the transportation sector by forcing shakeups at major companies like C.H. Robinson and CSX. Ancora director Conor Sweeney highlights the firm's strategy to drive returns by replacing leadership and restructuring boards at underperforming logistics giants. We also analyze recent trade statistics showing that while global demand grew, U.S. container traffic fell in November due to ongoing trade tensions. Import volumes in North America dropped nearly 4% for the eighth consecutive month, sharply contrasting with double-digit growth seen in regions like sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, the show covers the latest employment figures as truck transportation jobs remained flat in December, hitting their lowest point in four and a half years. This stagnation in the trucking sector is accompanied by a significant drop in warehouse jobs, which have plummeted by over 150,000 from their peak in 2022.
