Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. In honor of Women's History Month, I've selected four films featuring what I like to call “Wonder Women.” These are women who are brave, kind, strong, and all-around wonderful. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list—simply four films that resonate with me personally as a woman, and you should watch, whether you're a woman or not. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)First up is the 1991 Oscar-nominated film, Fried Green Tomatoes. The film stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Tandy, among others. Fried Green Tomatoes is based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, who also wrote the first draft of the screenplay. This film flashes between the 1920s and the 1980s, looking at Wonder Women through all stages of life. No matter where you find yourself, Fried Green Tomatoes is a great film to enjoy with the wonderful women in your life. Steel Magnolias (1989)Next up is Steel Magnolias from 1989. Focusing on southern women's culture in the 1980s, Steel Magnolias highlights the friendship among six women who must persevere through difficult circumstances. Starring Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Tom Skerritt, Steel Magnolias expertly blends comedy and drama, making a great movie full of Wonder Women. 9 to 5 (1980)The second Dolly Parton film in today's line-up is 9 to 5. The film, in addition to Dolly Parton, features Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. Highlighting 1980s office politics that are unfortunately still all too relevant today, 9 to 5 tackles serious women's issues with humor, making their points even more effective and poignant. This is a great laugh after the tear-jerking drama after Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes. Alien (1979)The last film in our Wonder Women selections is 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, and Bolaji Badejo as the Xenomorph, Alien, is a phenomenal sci-fi horror film. Alien's leading wonder woman, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, is an amazing sci-fi heroine. She's smart, brave, and resourceful, totes a flamethrower, and has a kitty-cat sidekick. What more do you want in a film about a Wonder Woman? We hope you enjoy these films and come back and see us next week on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Welcome to the hellscape that is 2025! We are back in the cave for episode 237, this time looking at two films from 1973, both shot largely in the Phillipines and both featuring dangerous women! We start off with "Devil Woman" which is known by several different names (and also listed with a variety of release dates) which focuses on a magical woman with snakes for hair who is seeking revenge on the people that killed her family. It's low-budget fun but not "good" by any metric. We follow that with "Wonder Women" fom show-favorite direct Robert Vincent O'Neil and with a stellar cast lead by Ross Hagen and Nancy Kwan. The plot revolves around an evil scientist with a money-making scheme to transplant healthy body parts from unwilling donors onto the bodies of rich people. Along comes agent Hagen who settles everybody's hash! It's a blast from beginning to end! Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. For our theme month where we are reviewing lesbian arthouse movies for pride month, we take a look at a very interesting film about the creator of Wonder Woman and the women in his life. The film is a well received film entitled PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN (2017)Professor William Marston (Luke Evans) is a professor at Harvard University with his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall). When student Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) becomes his assistant, the three become entangled in a love triangle. Using his ideas entitled DISC theory, he begins to live his life that way, as well as invent the character of Wonder Woman following the same hypothesis. The film is written and directed by Angela Robinson. Since it did not contact the family and estate of Marston, Elizabeth, and Olive, the film is very much fictional about actual individuals. However, is the film any good and does it have compelling plot points to standout? Your co-hosts take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.

When it comes to origins in comics it can be difficult to break new ground. However, Kelly Sue DeConnick found a way to bring a new vision to life for the world of Wonder Women. Wonder Women Historia explains how the Amazons were created, how Hippolyta: Diana's mother rose to power and the founding of island of Themyscira. DeConnick also teams up with 3 artists that bring her unique vision to each issue of this graphic novel featuring Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott. This was also published from DC Comics: Black Label line. From the robust mythology of the Greek Gods to Hippolyta fighting of behalf of herself and her tribe of Amazons this epic story stands up shares the struggles of how they fought for their survival and justice for their people. We recommend this story for fans of Wonder Women, Greek Mythology and imaginative art styles that shows this larger than life world.

Today, I'm talking to Joan MacDonald–a 77-year-old fitness influencer with 1.8 million Instagram followers. At 70, she was on medication for high blood pressure and acid reflux. She suffered from arthritis, couldn't walk up and down stairs, and feared she may suffer from additional health issues in the future. She enlisted her daughter and fitness trainer, Michelle, to help and achieved astounding results. She joined a transformation group called The Wonder Women, lost 60 pounds, and now works with her daughter to inspire, motivate, and train others to improve their wellness at any age on Instagram, YouTube, and her program, Train with Joan. Together, they co-authored Flex Your Age, Defy Stereotypes and Reclaim Empowerment. In our conversation, Joan and I talked about what inspired her to finally make a major lifestyle change, how you can change your beliefs about physical health and aging at any age, and how to integrate simple exercises into your daily routine. “Barbie” opened to a box office record over the weekend, spawning a full on social media and marketing blitz worthy of a summer blockbuster. But this isn't your mother's version of the pink-clad plastic princess. This Barbie is right in line with the Hollywood fantasy land where women rule and men are an optional accessory, sold separately. Jason says the film has one central theme, not that different from “Wonder Women” and “Wakanda Forever”, men are the bane of female existence and the cause of all societal woes. “Hollywood is hammering a consistent theme: men – regardless of color – owe women a debt. That's the point of “Barbie.” Shemeka Michelle joins “Fearless” to share a female perspective of the film and Delano Squires stops by to add his thoughts as well. Plus, Steve Kim joins Jason to discuss LeBron James' son, Bronny. The 18 year-old basketball star suffered cardiac arrest during a workout at USC on Monday. As soon as the news broke speculative surrounding the event and a possible connection to the COVID-19 vaccines began, but Jason says he's reluctant to go that route just yet.
