Spring Session 2021: Breakout Session 3 - Hearing the Good Shepherd's Voice: A Life Marked by Confidence and Peace

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2022 13:13

This is a message from Spring Session 2021 with Jack Henderson. We put Spring Session 2.0 together to answer the question, “What did we learn from the past year? What are we leaving behind and what are we taking with us as we seek to live with and become more like Christ?” Discussion Questions: 1. David approached the King of the Israelite army, and eventually Goliath, with confidence and peace. Verse 37 reads, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Where did David's confidence and peace ultimately come from? 2. Jack stated that over the past year, despite a difficult year, he has started to have more confidence and peace like David by striving to hear the Good Shepherd's voice every day and living life out in the pasture with him constantly and consistently. What are some practical ways you can make this daily decision too? Are you willing to try new things and maybe develop some new habits? What might be holding you back or standing in your way? 3. Psalm 23 was written by David, and gives us a glimpse into David's real and intimate relationship with the Good Shepherd. His confidence and peace came from knowing the shepherd's voice - take some time to read and reflect on his words, and consider what they may mean for you. Are you willing to allow Jesus to lead you, not just in the ups and downs, but in the everyday things of life? Are you willing to spend time with him daily so you are prepared to face both joy and adversity with confidence and peace? Scripture References: 1 Samuel 17: 32-37 John 10: 1-10 Psalm 23

Spring Session 2021: Breakout Session 2 - Letting Go of Lies & Embracing Trials

This is a message from Spring Session 2021 with Nicole Tobias. We put Spring Session 2.0 together to answer the question, “What did we learn from the past year? What are we leaving behind and what are we taking with us as we seek to live with and become more like Christ?” Discussion Questions: Nicole was very honest about her past year, and some of the unhealthy, and ultimately untrue thought patterns that it brought into her life- some old and some new. Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation where you start to believe untrue things about yourself? 2. In John 11, we see Jesus weeping, mourning the loss of a good friend. Nicole uses this story and states, “Jesus is with you right in the thick of it. His heart breaks whenever your heart breaks… It might feel like you are alone, but you are never alone.” Do you believe this? How can we remind ourselves and others of this truth, even in really hard circumstances? 3. Nicole challenges us to leave behind the lies of the enemy, and instead be reminded that we are children of God, created in his image, made to be in a relationship with Jesus. What are some unhealthy or untrue thought patterns that you need to give to God? How can we remind ourselves and others who we really are in Christ and how valuable and important we are to Him? Scripture References: John 11: 1-44 James 1: 2-4

This is a message from Spring Session 2021 with Joel Gray. We put Spring Session 2.0 together to answer the question, “What did we learn from the past year? What are we leaving behind and what are we taking with us as we seek to live with and become more like Christ?” Discussion Questions: 1. Who are your best friends? What makes a good friend? Over the past year, have you been able to spend more or less time with them? Have you made any new friends this year? 2. Joel talked about how important it is to surround yourself with good friends and people you can ask questions and grow in your faith with. Are you a part of a group or bible study like the one he was describing? If so, has it helped as you strive to follow and be more like Christ? If you are not a part of a similar group, would you be willing to join one? Maybe even start one? 3. What are some practical ways we can be more intentional about our friendships? How can we make being a part of community more of a priority in our lives? Scripture References: Psalm 133:1 Proverbs 17:7

Spring Session 2021: Main Session 2 - What We're Taking With Us

This is a message from Spring Session 2021 with JaVon Howse. We put Spring Session 2.0 together in early 2021 to answer the question, “What did we learn from the past year? What are we leaving behind and what are we taking with us as we seek to live with and become more like Christ?” Discussion Questions 1. Are you, like JaVon, tired of Netflix? What were some of the ways you used your time over this past year? Were some of the ways good and healthy? Were any of them not? Be honest with yourself and others as you talk and reflect. 2. JaVon describes the past year as a storm that we all had to go through together. Additionally, he pointed out that we have our own family's, and individual storms happening simultaneously- this is new territory for most of us. What has this been like for you? What has helped, and what hasn't? 3. Using Matthew 4: 1-11 as a reference, JaVon asks an interesting question. “How many of us, if we were offered the entire year back, would say no because of the growth that you made in your relationship with Christ?” How would you answer that question? Has it been a year of growth? Setbacks and hardship? For most of us, it's been a difficult mix of both. 4. Using Philippians 3:12-14 and a sports analogy, we are challenged to learn from the storms and losses that we have faced in life. Have you learned any lessons this year that you want to take with you? 5. As things continue to move forward and return back to normal, JaVon encourages us to take God with us because “God is the only consistent thing that will always be there for us.” Do you believe this? How has this past year made it harder or easier for you to believe that God is always with us? What are some practical ways that we can learn from the past, move forward with God, and in turn, strengthen our relationship with Jesus and become more like Him? Scripture References: Psalm 57: 1 Matthew 4:1-11 Philippians 3:12-14

Spring Session 2021: Main Session 1 - What We're Leaving Behind

This is a message from Spring Session 2021 with Jason Wavle. We put Spring Session 2.0 together in early 2021 to answer the question, “What did we learn from the past year? What are we leaving behind and what are we taking with us as we seek to live with and become more like Christ?” Discussion Questions 1. What is the hardest thing you've ever had to do physically? What made it so tough? Similarly, can you relate to Jason's story at all? Have you ever been in a tough situation and realized that you were being weighed down or burdened with things you shouldn't be carrying or didn't really even need in the first place? 2. Jason referenced that he was trying to find purpose and joy in things that were not of God. Specifically, he recognized that he had been seeking affirmation from, and was finding his own personal worth and value from others. When this was stripped away and brought to light, he felt hollow and empty. He then asks us, “When some of the things that previously brought you joy and purpose were stripped away, how did it make you feel? Did God reveal anything to you during this time?” How would you respond to these questions? 3. Jason states, “You might not be where you want to be, but you are certainly not where you used to be- so thank God for that.” Reflect on this. Have you taken any time to thank God for the ways you have seen and experienced Him this year? Why or why not? 4. What habits, rhythms, ways of living, or treating others and yourself are you going to leave behind? Has God revealed any relationships that you need to move on from or work to improve? What about activities? Are you willing to be honest with yourself and others about this? 5. Who are the people in your life that can help you let go of the old things that are not giving you life and not helping to make you more like Jesus? Similarly, are there any people in your life that you can help with this process? Scripture References: 2 Corinthians 5:17 Romans 6: 6-7 Galatians 5: 1
