https://rivermontrecords.com/ (Rivermont Records), a Virginia-based label that specializes in early jazz and ragtime, is proud to announce the premiere release of One Step to Chicago, a 14-track album that features an all-star lineup of jazz music legends. Recorded in 1992 and then laid aside until now, the album is the product of legendary producer George Avakian. Avakian brought three generations of jazz giants together in RCA's New York studio to record the exciting music of Frank Teschemacher (a pioneering jazz clarinetist of the late 1920s) and the Austin High Gang. The album features a Who's Who of notable jazz instrumentalists, including pianist/arranger Dick Hyman, clarinetists Kenny Davern and https://www.danlevinson.com/ (Dan Levinson), guitarist Marty Grosz, Grammy-winning bass saxophonist Vince Giordano and nearly a dozen more. http://www.bryanswright.com/wpdir/ (Bryan Wright), the founder and executive producer of Rivermont, says about the album, “This extraordinary recording documents the once-in-a-lifetime meeting of so many jazz greats — all playing in top form and recorded in state-of-the-art sound under Avakian's personal guidance. All-star bands don't always work artistically, but here, the chemistry is palpable. The musicians blend beautifully and sound as if they are having the time of their lives.” https://rivermontrecords.com/products/2260?variant=39963518173245 (One Step to Chicago) was released on July 15, 2022, in deluxe CD and vinyl packages. On today's show, we have Royal Expert, Commentator, and founder of The Monarchists (Themonarchists.com) Thomas J. Mace-Archer-Mills. He's the visionary creator of EIIR: The Platinum Record, a Jubilee Anthem, that was released on the Queen's 96th Birthday (4/21/22), honoring Her Majesty for her unprecedented 70-year reign. Thomas will be speaking about this and all things The Royal Family.      Thomas is the Founder, Visionary, and Director of the British Monarchists Society, President of the Centre for British Royal Studies, Editor-in-Chief of Crown & Country Magazine, creator of Crown & Country Radio, a Freeman of the City of London and a member of the Order of St. Thomas of Acon. In addition to the aforementioned, Thomas runs his own consultancy group. As a Royal Consultant for Protocol to the Princely House of Their Highnesses, Prince Waldermar, Princess Antonia, and Prince Mario-Max of Schaumburg-Lippe (a branch of Europe's oldest Royal family going back to the Viking Kings and the Royal Household of Denmark since 936. His Highness Prince Waldermar of Schaumburg-Lippe is in the line of succession to the British throne), Thomas further works with other international companies, businesses and Royal households. Mace-Archer-Mills has further carried out consultancy duties for, and not limited to, the Serbian Royal family on a series of occasions, most notably the 2017 Royal wedding of Prince Philip of Serbia.  Professionally, Thomas is a Consultant, Royal historian, award-winning author, media personality, and educational speaker. Thomas has been a radio presenter for London's W!zard Radio, which is broadcast internationally to over 15 countries, where he had several different shows and themes over five years. Thomas' last show was dedicated to helping the youth of the world overcome issues, challenges and negativity which face the daily lives of his listeners on “Therapy with Thomas Mills”. Thomas addressed the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Monarchist League in Sydney during the Summer of 2015 to thousands of members and has just recently lectured for Model Westminster and the Young Adults Forum in Parliament in February of 2017. In April of 2017, Thomas undertook a tour of America where he opened the Royal Society of St George – California Branch, completed several meet and greets and further attended events and book signings for his new release: “Their Majesties' Mixers – when they reign, they pour”, which has since won the Gourmand Award. In 2019 Thomas created the internet-based radio station, Crown & Country Radio" and continues to broadcast on his own specially themed shows. Thomas is well versed in the International Business Auditorium as well as Royal history, with degrees and certificates from American and European universities in History, International Political Economy, International Business Administration, International Relations, Humanities and Political Science. In honor of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, Thomas penned his first book with permission of the Palace, to which he was granted the use of the official Diamond Jubilee Logo. “To The Queen: A Royal Drinkology” sold 5,000 copies in the months following the central Jubilee weekend. Over the past decade, Thomas has worked (and still works) tirelessly on behalf of Crown and Country, building the British Monarchist Society and Foundation, which has become the leading organization for not only British, but international Monarchists which he funded himself. He has worked hard to incorporate like-minded people to be a part of this much-revered society within the United Kingdom, in which cumulatively, under Thomas' direction, brings British traditions to the next level. Thomas has been busy perfecting and readying his team to organize and carry out international celebrations for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and the House of Windsor for the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Thomas and the BMS hosted several events for The Diamond Jubilee in 2012, The Diamond Anniversary of the Coronation, the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte and the celebration of the longest reign: when The Queen's reign exceeded that of Queen Victoria on September 9, 2015. This is an exciting and challenging time for Thomas and his team, and it is with great commitment, energy and foresight that he is looking forward to producing an educational celebration within his latest project, “Crown and Country Magazine” that will leave a lasting legacy for future generations of Britons. In his spare time (which is very limited), Thomas enjoys traveling, horseback riding, the arts, theatre, music, fine dining, reading and writing. In addition to all this, we'll hear a piece from his Jubilee Anthem on today's show.  To keep up with all that Thomas is up to, follow him on the web at: Themonarchists.com Also on today's show, we have the founder of Rivermont Records, musicologist Bryan Wright, Ph.D. Rivermont Records was founded in 2003 to preserve and promote ragtime, jazz and 'hot dance' music. Wright's vision, with the label, is to respect the pioneers who created the music a century ago while supporting today's musicians.  With this, Rivermont Records is proud to announce the upcoming premiere release of 'One Step to Chicago', a 14-track album that features an all-star lineup of jazz music legends. Recorded in 1992 and then laid aside until now, the album is the product of legendary producer George Avakian.  The album features a who's who of notable jazz instrumentalists, including pianist/arranger Dick Hyman, clarinetists Kenny Davern and Dan Levinson, guitarists Marty Grosz and grammy-winning bass saxophonists Vince Giordano and nearly a dozen more. Loudon Wainwright III is best known as a folk singer and songwriter, but now he is lending his unique interpretation to the music of the great American songbook on a new album that he recorded with big band bandleader Vince Giordano and his Nighthawk Orchestra.  They talk about their deep affection for the music of composers like Irving Berlin and Rodgers & Hart and some of their favorite tracks  from their album I’d Rather Lead a Band.  Loudon recalls fond memories of his father playing these songs on the family record player when he was boy, and Vince remembers the legendary jazz arranger who inspired his lifelong passion for keeping this this music alive.  They reveal what they are doing to keep busy now that the pandemic has prevented them from touring and performing and how they find solace and a few laughs during these troubled times in the hopeful music of the Great Depression and the bawdy lyrics of a rather tragic ukulele player who became the voice of Walt Disney’s Jiminy Cricket. Loudon Wainwright III’s new album I’d Rather Lead A Band is out today, an “anti-nostalgic” take on 14 songs from The Great American Songbook. The project is a collaboration between Loudon, famed music supervisor Randall Poster (Boardwalk Empire, Grand Budapest Hotel, Wolf of Wall Street), GRAMMY-winning producer Stewart Lerman, and Vince Giordano and his band The Nighthawks, longtime legends of the NYC nightclub scene. In an extensive interview with Loudon, Rolling Stone says he is "still the poet laureate of family dysfunction," even as he strips his famed lyricism on the new record to lovingly sing the songs that are deeply intertwined with his childhood. Loudon spoke with NPR Music’s Bob Boilen about the album in this week’s All Songs Considered podcast and it was featured in the LA Times' most anticipated fall albums preview. I’d Rather Lead A Band has been deemed an “agile, affectionate take” on The American Songbook by The Scotsman, who note that Giordano and his band “clearly know their way around a vintage dancefloor.” In their review, the Associated Press states: “while the band is tight, old Loudo is loose. He hams it up with the same comic timing that has served his own songs so well for the past half century,” and it’s been featured in Variety and American Songwriter. As interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Wainwright and Giordano’s big band present a perfectly paced supper club set of songs by Irving Berlin (“I’d Rather Lead a Band” and “The Little Things In Life”), Fats Waller (“Ain’t Misbehavin’”), Frank Loesser (“More I Cannot Wish You”), and others with nimble phrasing and an approach that lets the songs lead the way, like a dance partner.

Adrian Cunningham is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and world traveler. Originally from Sydney, Australia and now based in New York, Adrian is proving to be one of his country's top exports.  With fluent command of the saxophones, clarinet, and flute, he is one of the finest multi-instrumentalists in jazz today.  Adrian is the recipient of the Hot House Saxophone Award for 2017.  Adrian's band, Professor Cunningham and His Old School, is the winner of international band competition World Jam (Madrid: 2016, 2017) and Best Band Award at 2017 Harlem Festival (Vilnius, Lithuania).  When he is not busy performing in New York with some of its finest players, he is touring the world playing jazz festivals and swing events.   Since relocating to New York City in 2008, Adrian has performed at some of the Big Apple's finest clubs, including The Blue Note, Smalls, Birdland, 55 Bar, Apollo Theatre, Fat Cat, Dizzy's at Jazz at Lincoln Center and even an event at the hallowed Village Vanguard.  He has played with such jazz stars as Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Jon Batiste, George Coleman Jr., Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Ted Rosenthal, Chris Potter and René Marie.  Adrian is currently performing with world-class trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, including a performance at the London Jazz Festival and a recording in Abbey Road Studios alongside Wess Anderson, Reginald Veal and Herlin Riley.  Adrian's travels with the Wycliffe Gordon quintet have also included appearances at the Johannesburg Jazz Festival, Bern Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Newport Jazz Festival and regular performances in New York at Dizzy's at Jazz at Lincoln Center.  Adrian has also appeared on two of Wycliffe's albums to rave reviews (“One of the unexpected joys [of the album] is the rich, woody clarinet of Cunningham,” Hot House NYC). In 2013 Cunningham formed a traditional New Orleans-style outfit called Professor Cunningham and His Old School, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.  They have become one of the top bands on the international Swing scene, performing at the Blue Note Jazz Festival (NYC), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (Australia), Sopot Molo Jazz Festival (Poland), Snowball (Stockholm), SLOX (California), CPH:LX (Copenhagen) and Melbourne International Jazz Festival.  Cunningham also has a busy individual jazz festival schedule, including repeat appearances at the North Carolina Jazz Festival, Central Illinois Jazz Festival, Newport plus concerts at the famous Gennett studios (Richmond, Indiana).  Additional international festival credits include Montreux Jazz Festival (3 times), Johannesburg, Japan, London, Tokyo and Sopot Molo (Poland). From 2014 to 2017, Adrian was the leader of the saxophone section of the Grammy-winning Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, a NYC-based 1920s swing orchestra responsible for the soundtracks for “Boardwalk Empire” and movies including The Aviator.  As a leader, he has recorded ten CDs and two DVDs both in Australia with his quartet and also in New York through Arbors Records.  His 2017 release Jazz Speak, recorded with jazz stars Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton and Ted Rosenthal, broke the top 20 in the U.S. national JazzWeek charts. His new CD Adrian Cunningham & His Friends Play Lerner & Loewe – which explores the jazz influence of the legendary songwriting team known for iconic musicals like My Fair Lady, Camelot and Brigadoon – features Fred Hersch on piano, John Hébert on bass and Eric McPherson on drums, with guest stars Randy Brecker on trumpet and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone.  On this episode, Adrian shares his one way ticket to Barcelona. It is an incredible honor to be the first to show case a new album on FM radio. In this episode of My Father's Place Radio, Richard Solomon interviews Bill Heller of the Rippingtons. The new album is entitled "Open Road."   This is his official bio: Bill Heller, best known as the keyboard player for the legendary contemporary jazz group the Rippingtons, grew up in a very musical household on Long Island, NY. His Dad was a conductor (NYC Subway), and his Mom orchestrated all the activities around the house! From an early age, he and his two brothers were surrounded by family get-togethers filled with music. It wasn't long before he got into the act, playing accordion! Bill attended Fredonia State University, and received a degree in Music Education. Bill met Russ Freeman (leader of the Rippingtons) while recording at his studio in Colorado. Russ asked him to play on a few tracks that he was producing for his and Craig Chaquico's "Redwoods to the Rockies". His first Rippingtons recording was “Topaz”, back in 1998, and he began performing live with the band in March of 2001. Since then, Bill has co-produced all of Craig’s CDs, of which a few songs made it to the #1 position on the smooth jazz charts! Bill released his first effort as a solo artist Find the Way in 2014. The project contains 12 titles, all written and produced by Bill. This recording features performances by Jeff Kashiwa and Eric Marienthal, and three different rhythm sections. From the Rippingtons Dave Karasony-drums and Rico Belled-bass, Joel Rosenblatt-drums (Spyro Gyra, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bill Evans, Michel Camillo) and Dave Anderson-bass (Bill Evans, Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Baldwin), Frank Belluci-drums (Bucky Pizzarelli, Oz Noy, Rachel Z) and Jim Cammack-bass (Ahmad Jamal), also Carl Fischer-trumpet (Billy Joel, Maynard Ferguson), and Luis Bonilla-trombone (Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). For the last ten years Bill has served as the Musical Director for the Long Island Hall of Fame awards shows. He provided arrangements and incidental music for these shows. The bands he assembled accompanied such acts as Daryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Gary US Bonds, Felix Cavaliere, The Lovin Spoonful, Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Vince Giordano, and more. Some of the legends inducted at these shows have included Clive Davis, Ron Delsner, Lou Reed, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Koppelman, and Steven Van Zandt. Bill has produced recordings for jazz guitarists Steve Briody and Matt Marshak. He has also performed on Broadway for the shows Movin’ Out and Hot Feet!

Stuart Pearce is an engineer by trade.   Three years ago, he sent his youngest child off to college and did a "rest of life" evaluation. What do things look like for the next 20-30 years? Golf and finishing would be fun... but it didn't have the appeal to Stuart. Playing an instrument came to mind.  Inspired by hearing Edgar Meyer, he decided to pick up the bass. He's three years in and is loving it! Our story today in three parts: Part 1 - why the bass? the story of the aluminum bass being stewards of these instruments Part 2 - the challenges what it’s like learning the bass as an adult what has been surprisingly difficult Part 3 - advice for those thinking about picking up an instrument Reach out to Stuart by emailing him. New York based  Bria Skonberg, trumpeter and vocalist, has quickly been making waves in her first year here. Originally from Chilliwack, B.C. Since moving to New York 18 months ago she has performed with jazz luminaries Bucky Pizzarelli, Wycliffe Gordon, Nicholas Payton, and Vince Giordano at the city's top spots including Birdland, Symphony Space, Dizzy's Coca Cola as well as Louis Armstrong's own backyard in Queens.  She has represented Canada as a bandleader and guest artist all over North America, Europe, China and Japan. Best known for her knowledge of classic jazz and pursuit of world-wide fun, she is creating a style all her own rooted in swampy New Orleans and blues with swing, pop and world music influences. Intent on giving back, she programs and narrates school shows and workshops for Kindergarten through college level students and is a faculty member of the annual Sacramento Traditional Jazz Camp. Her recent release on Random Act Records "So Is The Day" is receiving rave reviews and features an all star line-up including a duet with guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli. www.briaskonberg.com
