Throughout his storied career, the legendary Steven Soderbergh has directed a wide array of highly acclaimed films and/or hits (Out of Sight, Ocean's 11, Magic Mike, Black Bag, Logan Lucky, Contagion, Sex, Lies, & Videotape) and THIS is the film which earned him his only Oscar for Best Director in 2000.  This was actually one of two films (the other being Erin Brockovich) which he was nominated for in 2000 which turned out to be a TRULY stellar year for him!  It's a sprawling story about the American "War on Drugs" during the late '90's, focusing on several different characters on different sides of the law and various levels of the drug trade including two DEA agents (Don Cheadle, Luis Guzman), a judge who has just been appointed the National Drug Czar (Michael Douglas), the wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) of a suspected drug dealer (Steven Bauer), that couple's conniving attorney (Dennis Quaid), a teenager (Erika Christiansen) who becomes addicted to crack, and one conflicted Mexican cop (Benicio Del Toro who won an Oscar for his performance).  It's a complex story delving into a lot of moral grey areas and it's a testament to all of the talent involved (including Oscar-winning writer Stephen Gaghan) that this film was not only highly acclaimed but also a word-of-mouth blockbuster with audiences at the time of release.  However twenty-five years later, it is not often mentioned by many as among Soderbergh's best....so how does this ambitious ensemble hold up?  Let's find out if any one gets away clean.....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

President Trump was on fire in Pennsylvania last night. In a speech that felt like a rally the president reported how the country is back 10 months after the disaster of the Biden administration and radical Democrats. The crowd cheered on President Trump as he lad out the groundwork for all the success to come, not only to Pennsylvania but to the country. Senator Ron Johnson is having a hearing today about another failed Democrat disaster, Obamacare. The hearing is focused on assessing the damage done by Obamacare and the damage is significant. Recent reports from Paragon show there is between 6 million and 24 million cases of fraudulent usage of Obamacare that costs taxpayers $27 billion per year. From phantom accounts to double enrollment to zero-enrollment, Obamacare is a complete failure completely perpetrated by Democrats. A few weeks ago Andrew Huberman announced that he had partnered with the sports and eyewear company Roka. Together they've put out a specially branded blue-blocking glasses that are designed to help you wind down and get better sleep at night. If that sounds weird to you, you're not alone. Over the years Huberman, who a professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology, has repeatedly said that that he didn't believe that blue blocking classes did all that much. Was it possible that a giant financial windfall could have changed his mind on settled science? It's not totally surprising that leading influencers might themselves be influenced by tidal wave amounts of cash. As  @TaylorLorenz  mentions, we've always doctors on industry payrolls shilling everything from sugar to cigarettes. What's new is that social media engenders para-social relationships with specific influencers whose own opinions, protocols and prognostications tend towards cult-like power over their followers. With more than 15 million combined followers across his social media accounts, Andrew Huberman is likely the most powerful scientific voice on the planet. So when he says something is settled science and then changes his mind for a cash grab, it undermines the public faith in information writ-large.It's just one small step from trusting to untrusting Huberman to someone trusting and then untrusting scientific explanations from anyone. (Incidentally, Benn Jordan just did a great piece on misinformation and explicit propaganda that shows how global powers capitalize on the general distrust of authorities).The thing that I find hardest to understand about Huberman's most recent grift is now that it happened, but why he would need money at all. What motivates his endless greed when it comes at the expense of his integrity? Stanford professors of his caliber make about $250,000 according to Glassdoor.com. That's a pretty solid amount of money all on its own. YouTube ads run automatically and pay about $5.50 per thousand views with what amounts to a strict firewall between his editorial content and the sponsor's demands. (THIS NEXT SENTENCE CONTAINS AN ERROR, PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH) Given that he has 365 million views on his channel, it's a simple calculation to figure out that he is bringing in about $7M a year from adsense alone. That means he's already making 28 times his ordinary salary without the need for any ethical compromises on his part. All told, the Huberman Lab podcast has generated at least $20 million over the course of its three year run to date. (CORRECTION THIS PREVIOUS PARAGRAPH CONTAINS AN ERROR: @hubermanlab I calculated that Huberman made $20M on YouTube ads based on his 365M combined views which make around $5.50 CPM. My math was seriously off. The true total would have been only $2M from ad sense. So instead of making 28x the standard Stanford salary, he only was making 3x. I regret the error and will issue a video correction)That's an unfathomable, wasteful and frankly obscene, amount of money from my perspective. Even so, Huberman didn't think that it was enough. The Roka deal will likely give Huberman a sizable payment of $1-2 million over its lifetime. Meanwhile, He has a further 13 paid sponsors on his show which, we can guess net him another $6 million (actually, just $600,000) or so a year. That mindset is what's fundamentally broken with the information universe we live in. Instead of being an upstanding credible vehicle for science, Huberman made the, probably unconscious, decision that money was the most important metric for success. The only silver lining here is that at least we can document exactly when and where he changed his mind on science.I hope that you enjoy the video.

Candace Owens has responded forcefully to criticism from Turning Point USA (TPUSA) leaders over a proposed interview, rejecting their demand that she appear in person at a designated time and date at their Arizona studio for an interview to address her criticisms. She agreed to appear via Zoom, and allow TPUSA to monetize the event for their benefit, yet they refused. For years, Ghislaine Maxwell insisted that she had cut all ties with Jeffrey Epstein after his 2008 arrest and conviction, portraying herself as someone who had distanced from him and played no role in his life afterward. She publicly claimed that their relationship effectively ended and that any suggestion she maintained involvement in his affairs was false. This narrative was central to her defense strategy — an attempt to separate herself from Epstein's criminal identity and rewrite history by presenting herself as a former associate who had left his orbit long before the federal government reopened the case.But that story unraveled when flight records, photographs, emails, and testimony showed that Maxwell continued to have contact with Epstein for years after his first conviction. She was documented traveling on Epstein's private jets, living in properties purchased with his funds, exchanging messages with him, and appearing alongside him socially long after he was publicly exposed as a sex offender. There was also evidence that Epstein remained financially entangled with her, supporting her lifestyle and activities well into the 2010s.
