On the 79th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Brad Rusthoven from the Slamfest Podcast, review the 1988 album "GN'R Lies" by Guns N' Roses. In the late 1980's Guns N' Roses exploded on the hard rock scene. Their debut album, "Appetite For Destruction" would go on to become the biggest selling debut album of all time. GNR was led by one of a kind lead singer Axl Rose. Guitarists Slash and Izzy Stradlin formed an incredible dual guitar attack. Duff McKagan on bass and Steven Adler were a monster rhythm section. Previous to their debut album the band released a "live" EP called Live Like A Suicide which consisted of four songs, two of which were covers. They decided to add 4 acoustic songs to side two and call the album "GN'R Lies." The album made it to #2 on the US Billboard charts and eventually went 5 times platinum. It was produced by Guns N' Roses and Mike Clink. GN'R Lies continued GNR's unpredictable streak and made the fans clamor for more. Raw "live songs along with amazing and catchy acoustic songs, like "Patience" which went to #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100. I talk with psychology researcher Bennett Kleinberg, whose work brings together psychology, machine learning, natural-language processing, and deception detection. We explore why humans are bad at identifying lies, which verbal clues may reveal deception—and why nervousness is often misleading. Bennett explains how liars use detail and how level of detail can be a clue to deception), the fact that deception usually involves a good amount of truth in the mix and what that means, and what happens when human judgment is combined with AI. Shincheonji recruits through what looks like an ordinary Bible study, and most people who walk through the door have no idea that it is a destructive cult. Chris Vishoot found out only after three and a half years as a devoted member. In 2018, a woman he met on a dating app invited him to what she called an innocent class on scripture. Within a year he was driving an hour each way to an unmarked building in Seattle, sleeping three to four hours a night, and reporting on Bible study students he had once sat beside as a recruit himself. Chris grew up in a Christian household that expected the world to end at any moment. He graduated from the University of Washington with two engineering degrees, and by his mid-twenties he found himself asking a familiar question: is this all there is to life? Two friends had died young, and Chris, an agnostic at the time, was searching for something bigger. That search is exactly what recruiters for the group are trained to find and use. Chris is now one of the more credible Christian ex-Shincheonji voices in the country. He runs Bible Vaccine Center, helps moderate the r/shincheonji subreddit for former members, and works with pastors whose congregations have been infiltrated by recruiters posing as ordinary Christians. God's power was shown in this healing—this man truly saw the light. And yet there is still so much that keeps us all in the dark. Lies imprison us—even good Christian folks. Lies about God: that we are separate from him, that he is distant and angry, ready to strike because of our past, eager to judge us or our parents, ready to make an example of us. Blinded to the true nature of God, we've convinced ourselves he is mainly about retribution instead of restoration, that he is primarily a judge instead of a Father. So often, even our religion blinds us to who God really is. We paint all our fears and anxieties onto the face of God, and so we do not see—even when the light is right in front of us. Are you tired of the darkness? Let Jesus open your eyes to who God truly is. Remember the words to Philip: Show us the Father and we will be satisfied. And Jesus answered, "Philip, have I been with you all this time, and you still don't know me? When you see me, you see the Father. I and my Father are one." There is no shadow side behind Jesus. Do you see him reaching out and healing those others think are cursed and condemned? Do you see him loving the poor, the unlovely, the outsider? Do you see his self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love? Then what you see is what you've got: you've got the light of the world. Let Jesus open your eyes to who God is and who you already are in him. Let him show you. Let him open your eyes and see. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Who are you? That was the question so many demanded an answer for. The people who encountered Jesus—some were fearful of who he might be, others were threatened by his claims, and many simply could not see him for who he truly was. Sometimes it's not just a matter of not seeing, but of not being ready to listen to Jesus's answer to that deepest question. Sometimes lies—lies that fuel our fears, that feed our pride, that cast the face of God in the shadow of our own anxieties—keep us from receiving the healing that awaits us. Lies can blind our hearts, closing us off from the truth that is standing right before us. So what did God do, seeing humanity caught in the darkness of deceit and estrangement? He came. He came in love and showed us the way of love—self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. Jesus says, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will know that I am he… I do nothing on my own but only what the Father has taught me." When we look at the one lifted up on the cross, we see the answer to the question, "Who are you?" We see what the woman caught in adultery saw—the one who stoops into the dust of our shame and brokenness to write something new, the one who does not condemn but comes to save, for we were already condemned. We see the one who will take away the sin of the world, the one who has included us into the life he shares with the Father. When we see him, our hearts are invited to listen—to truly hear the answer. The prayer of my soul today is that I will hear Jesus's answer to the question, "Who are you?" That when I look at the cross, I will see love. Because that's who he is. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, for my daughters, and for my son. And that is the prayer that I have for you. May it be so.
