Lies often begin as an attempt to avoid pain—whether it’s a small exaggeration meant to spare feelings or a major deception that shakes a relationship to its core. But this devotional reminds us that while lies promise comfort, they ultimately deliver harm. Deceit doesn’t just damage the relationship between two people; it also erodes the integrity of the one who lies and creates a ripple effect of distrust that can last far beyond the original betrayal. And even when forgiveness is present, healing is not always immediate. Forgiving someone doesn’t automatically erase the consequences of what happened, and it doesn’t require us to pretend we weren’t hurt. In fact, it’s natural to protect ourselves after trust is broken. But one of the painful realities this devotional highlights is how easily we can carry that hurt forward—projecting distrust onto new people who haven’t done anything wrong. This is where “the truth hurts”: truth asks us not to remain closed off forever, but to live with a heart that’s willing to love again. Trusting again doesn’t mean ignoring red flags or throwing caution to the wind. It means letting God heal what was broken so we aren’t trapped by bitterness or fear. It means allowing discernment to guide us while keeping our hearts open enough to receive the blessings God still wants to bring—new friendships, restored hope, and even new love. The devotional encourages us to remember that God never wastes brokenness. He shines through it, heals it, and can rebuild what feels shattered. When we place our confidence in Him, we can move forward with courage, believing that God is still writing fruit-bearing chapters ahead. On her highly successful Czech podcast, Canaries in the Net, Alex co-hosts on topics surrounding digital propaganda and toxic algorithms. She combines her experience as a communication advisor to the chairman of the legislation committee in the European Parliament with the latest information on how digital space is becoming increasingly targeted. As one of the earliest to speak out about how digital information was being used to sway politics before 2016, she described herself as “one of those canaries in the coal mines”, giving an early warning of impending danger. She described the feeling of being overwhelmed by the information campaigns that we now understand create a technique of “flooding the zone” to destabilize. “At that time, we didn't understand where it came from. It just came from everywhere, from social media, from news, newly built podcasts, and our news outlets.” “The entire information space became unbelievably toxic,” she said of the time. She now understands that Russia was conducting a highly organized campaign to learn to destabilize systems of democracy. When her husband was offered a job in Vancouver, British Columbia, she decided to take the opportunity to relocate. I agreed with Alex about the KGB methodology of demoralization and raising anxiety, fear, distrust, and disgust, particularly against experts in science and democratic institutions. I described the technique she was referencing as their attempts to see what sticks, amplify, and overload methods, a technique used against the U.S., as well as other NATO countries. It is an intentional polarization that allows us to start seeing the enemy in our neighbors, friends, and family.  Alex Alvarová wrote a 2021 fiction book Feeding The Demons: The Conquerors of America. The book was inspired by her research on Steve Bannon and his role in the 2016 election. The outcome is a political thriller that depicts America, Russia, organized crime, and how big data might have been used to influence significant elections. Alex also wrote the 2017 nonfiction work The Industry of Lies, an analysis of how Russia used the 2013 presidential election in the Czech Republic as a trial run to perfect its hybrid-warfare aggression for altering the outcome of the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. She now teaches others how to recognize propaganda, increase data literacy, and defensive techniques against online attacks. After a great sales call, silence can feel brutal. You were sure they were going to buy, maybe even that day, and then nothing. No reply. No decision. No payment. The problem is that the "answer" your brain invents is often a story, not reality. And once you believe the story, you freeze. You stop following up, stop gathering information, and miss opportunities that were still very much alive. This is where Nikki brings it back to strategy. The antidote to mental spiraling is curiosity. Instead of deciding what the silence means, ask better questions. Start with yourself: Is this story true? Is it useful? Then take action with the other person. Nikki shares a simple, effective follow up framework designed to reduce ambiguity and make it easy for the buyer to respond. She even gives you a ready to use subject line: "Did you see this?" The message is short and direct, and it removes the pressure while still keeping the conversation moving. This episode is a reminder that confidence in business is not about never feeling uncertain. It is about recognizing when your brain is trying to protect you with made up certainty and choosing to stay in action anyway. Follow up. Offer clarity. Make it easy. You don't gear up once the battle starts. You put it on now, or you bleed. So what is the gear? How do we prepare for battle and not find we walked piece by piece through what it means to stand. The belt of truth keeps a life together. In the ancient world you'd “gird up your loins” so you wouldn't trip—truth does that for the soul. Lies aren't neutral; they rewire reality. Believe a lie about your spouse and it will change your home. Believe a lie marketed for profit (think OxyContin) and communities pay. In a world of influencers, spin, and weaponized narratives, we need a wise information diet. I won't deep-dive fads. I want to be useful where I can actually act. I avoid demagogic voices, follow the money, and ask whether this input helps me love my neighbor and remember the spiritual battle. Community matters too. The Asch experiments showed that one honest voice can help another person tell the truth. Wear the belt of truth; be that voice. Then the breastplate of righteousness. Righteousness means a life examined and approved by a higher authority. Every human heart aches for that. If my “rightness” rests on my performance, I ride a roller coaster. If it rests on people's approval, they own me. God gives a better way: imputed righteousness. Jesus aced the wilderness, the trials, the cross—and He credits His record to us. That breastplate protects the heart so we don't start starved for approval; we start full. Martin Luther prayed, “Jesus, I am your punishment and you are my reward.” When the enemy condemns, we answer with 1 John 3:20 and Colossians 3:3—my life is hidden with Christ in God. I don't preach, parent, or work to get approval; I move from approval. That shift reframes everything: obedience flows from love, difficulty becomes formation, and we carry a humble swagger—Jesus for me, in me, and through me, in spite of me.

When firefighters discovered the body of forty-year-old Terry King inside the charred remains of his Cantonment, Florida home in November 2001, they assumed the man had been asleep when the fire broke out and died as a result. Upon further inspection, investigators found that King hadn't died as a result of the fire, but from severe blunt force trauma to his head.
