Ojai has always been a place where voices matter — artists, thinkers, seekers, misfits, and makers. But what happens when a public-speaking club sheds the corporate rules and reinvents itself in the spirit of this valley? In this week's episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, I sit down with Karen Banfield, founder and president of the new Ojai Valley Speech Club, and Severo Lara, its vice president, to explore how they transformed a fading Toastmasters chapter into a vibrant, heartfelt community. When Karen stepped in to rescue what remained of the old club— just six members and dwindling fast — she realized the structure itself was part of the barrier. So she did something bold: she let it go.What emerged is something distinctly Ojai: A relaxed gathering focused not on rigid rules or corporate polish, but on authenticity, intuition, creativity, and real human connection.Members now give talks on everything from personal vulnerability to quantum physics, from life lessons to the mysterious ways intuition shapes the choices we make. The club has nearly tripled in size, and the energy in the room is unmistakable — a sense of growth, bravery, and community. In our conversation, Karen and Severo discuss:How they redesigned public speaking for the Ojai spiritWhy ditching formality invites deeper honestyThe surprising subjects their members exploreHow a small group grew into an inspired communityAnd why learning to speak from the soul is more important than everWhether you've always wanted to improve your public speaking or simply love stories of grassroots community-building, this episode offers insight, inspiration, and a reminder that finding your voice is an act of courage — and connection.Tune in, get inspired, and maybe even consider stepping up to the mic yourself. This might be the last time they let street guys like us handle any podcasts this valuable. We've had a good run of Scorsese films this year (Goodfellas, The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street) but there's only so much gas is in the Scorsese tank. We canceled our Raging Bull 40th anniversary podcast because we just couldn't fit it in. Jim's pumping the breaks on reviewing any more gangster films in the near future. Are we running out of steam? Getting sloppy? I sure hope not because that's when you make mistakes. That's when you get whacked. Social clubs, fraternal orders, and the like have had a storied and critical role in public life. That is, until government programs and technology gave us an out from having to deal with each other. But with modernity failing, will clubs and community organizations make a huge comeback? In this episode we explore club life – past, present, and future, if there is one. A. What happens when a generation of kids is searching for confidence, connection, and a place to belong - while youth programs everywhere face budget cuts and shifting priorities? For Mike “Neech” Cannici, longtime Program Coordinator at the Boys & Girls Club of the Naugatuck Valley, the answer is simple: you keep showing up for them, no matter what. This week on Mission CTRL, Ramon and Jorge sit down with Neech, who has spent nearly 30 years helping young people discover who they are and what they can become. From the game room where he first started in 1995 to the life-changing programs he oversees today, Neech has seen firsthand how youth development transforms kids - and whole communities. He shares powerful stories: children who once lacked confidence becoming “Youth of the Year,” older kids embracing younger ones like family, and entire generations returning to the Club because of the impact it had on their lives. Neech opens up about his own struggles with confidence growing up, the mentors who changed his path, and why programs like Torch Club and Keystone are so essential in building dedication, leadership, and belonging. As services are being slashed and community priorities shift, Neech reminds us why investing in youth is everyone's responsibility - including the business community. Because behind every “tough” kid is someone searching for guidance, connection, and someone who cares enough not to give up.Whether you're a parent, educator, leader, or anyone who believes in the power of community, this episode is a moving look at the heart and hope of youth development - and a reminder to never stop dreaming, no matter your age.
