Chris and Matt have been yakking about extreme metal, or ‘Punishing Brutality’ as it’s affectionately known, for the past twenty years. This never-ending conversation continued and even escalated after Matt moved to Philadelphia in 2014. When Matt visited London in 2018, the two devout metalheads travelled to Brighton to attend a triumphant hometown show from British mathcore wizards Rolo Tomassi. A late night train ride back to London ended with one lass from the carriage stopping them in the London train station and saying something to the effect of “that was the most detailed and intense discussion of heavy metal I have ever overheard in my life!” Momentary pity for the rest of the carriage’s occupants swiftly forgotten, an idea was born. Why not record these conversations? Would anyone care to listen? Chris is bassist in Row of Ashes and is ex-Canaya.
