POPULARITY
Monday, 7 April 2025 Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men. Matthew 9:8 “And the crowds having seen, they marveled, and they glorified God, the ‘having given such authority' to men” (CG). In the previous verse, the healed paralytic arose and departed to his house. With his healing and ability to arise and depart, Matthew next records, “And the crowds having seen, they marveled.” This wasn't something done in a corner. Rather, there were many witnesses including the scribes. Because of this, it could not later be denied that it took place. And more, because all three synoptic gospels record the event, there is a reliable, historical witness to the fact in the pages of the Bible. But for the immediate time, what the crowds saw stunned them. As it was in a city, it would have been known that this man was a paralytic. It wasn't as if it could have been faked by shipping him in from another town. Rather, he went to his house, meaning he was a local. Because of the obvious miracle that took place, it next says, “and they glorified God.” This is the reason why God does what He does. He did not need to create, but He did. He did not need to create sentient life, but He did. When man fell, God was under no obligation to bring him back to a state of restoration. Despite Israel's constant and continuous rejection of Him, God has maintained them as a people, just as He said He would when He covenanted with them. God's glory and the recognition of it is the purpose of all such things. But it is not a selfish glory that demands it to be given. Rather, free will is associated with man's ability to glorify or reject God. For those who glorify God, they share in the goodness of what God has done. Thus, it is not a one-sided thing that takes place. Understanding this, the reason for their glorifying God is next stated, saying He is “the ‘having given such authority' to men.” A new word, toioutos, is introduced here. It is a demonstrative pronoun translated as “such.” It is derived from toi, the, and houtos, this. As such, it signifies “truly this,” and thus, “of this sort.” It denotes character or individuality. In other words, God made Himself and His power evident through a particular Man. Thus, He has brought glory to Himself in this manner. At this point, it was still not known what sort of Man Jesus is. Instead, they assumed that God was working through a man who could have been any man. Eventually, those who continued to follow and experience the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus would learn the full details of who Jesus is. What may be the more relevant issue that is being dealt with here, however, is not the physical healing of the paralytic. Jesus has already been recorded as having done that. He has also healed many others in a similar manner. The more important issue is that He had just said that the man's sins were forgiven. This is what got the scribes upset, accusing Him of blasphemy. Jesus prodded them concerning which was easier. The implication was that His words concerning forgiveness were. Therefore, in healing the man, it is implied that the forgiveness Jesus spoke of previously was granted as well. This would then lead to the marveling of the crowds. What authority God has given to Man. Indeed! Life application: The Bible is the written record of what has occurred in redemptive history. It details God's workings in and through Christ in order to reconcile us to Himself. Is it reliable? If you are unsure, it is incumbent upon you to verify it in your own mind. Or, if you are challenged by someone as to why you believe it, can you defend your faith? Even if you cannot, if someone challenges you, the onus is on that person to make his claims for or against the word. This was the case with Simon Greenleaf. He was a non-believer, but he was one of the greatest legal minds in history. He was a principal founder of Harvard law school. At one point, he was challenged by a student to look at the gospels from a legal standpoint. As an intellectually honest person, he took the challenge, setting aside any presuppositions or biases. In doing so, he concluded that the gospels hold the topmost weight of legal accuracy. His basis for this was that “Every document, apparently ancient, coming from the proper repository or custody, and bearing on its face no evident marks of forgery, the law presumes to be genuine, and devolves on the opposing party the burden of proving it to be otherwise.” His conclusion was that the gospels bore this stamp of authenticity and were, in fact, what they claimed to be. As such, he states – “The foundation of our belief is a basis of fact - the fact of the birth, ministry, miracles, death, resurrection by the Evangelists as having actually occurred, within their own personal knowledge it was therefore impossible that they could have persisted in affirming the truths they have narrated, had not Jesus actually rose from the dead, and had they not known this fact as certainly as they knew any other fact.” Simon Greenleaf surrendered his life to Christ, knowing that no legal case could suitably challenge the Bible's genuineness. Be sure of your faith by being sure of what the basis for your faith is. Read this word, study this word, and cherish this word. Be ready to defend it and also be ready to challenge those who dismiss it. Implore them to be as intellectually honest as Simon Greenleaf and to do their own evaluation of it – to the glory of God. Lord God, we know Your word is true, but we also need to know how to defend what we believe. Help us in this endeavor. Remind us of the things we know, and help us to build upon that knowledge from day to day so that when we are challenged, we can respond in a manner that glorifies You. Help us in this, O God. Amen.

Today we are going to talk about meetings! Everyone hates them because they often end up being time wasters, but they really do serve a purpose, and today I'm going to talk about how to make them super efficient so they work for you! Meetings are very useful, but so many people don't use them properly. They take up too much time. They aren't run properly. They don't achieve anything. And yet, I tell you to schedule meetings with your VA clients all the time. So why would I say meetings aren't that great? Because a lot of people don't run them well. That's really the basic problem with meetings. So let's talk about how to make your meetings work. First things first, I call them production meetings. Because what we cover in them is about what is going to get done, and also because the word production indicates that there is a purpose to the meeting. Secondly, these are scheduled. Regularly scheduled. When we are working with clients, the more time we have to work the better for everyone, so it's important to not stop what you are doing to take a meeting. You set up your calendar in your meeting and you work the rest of your time around it. I used to have a weekly production meeting with my clients - I'll tell you more about how I ran those later in the episode, but we would typically meet once face to face (Zoom), on Mondays, and then the rest of the week we would communicate by email and project management system. It was effective, even for my busiest clients. When your clients know you have a meeting once a week they can plan for it - and yes, although sometimes you do need a second meeting during the week, if you let the client book endless meetings you are allowing them to form a very bad habit - not every email or question needs to be a meeting. Third, these are brief meetings. The biggest complaint about meetings is that they take too much time and get too little done, so avoid that at all costs. When you are organized and when there is a purpose, setting a time of 15 minutes or 20 minutes is the best way to go. These meetings are to make decisions, not go over every single detail of your work together. Even with my busiest clients, we kept meetings to 30 minutes or less every week. Everyone appreciates that, and everyone buys in for sure! So how to run a meeting so it works better? Here are a few of my best tips: 1. Take charge Don't let clients run your meetings. There, I said it. Clients are not the ones who are tracking your time or working within their own budget. They are not the administrative expert of the relationship. That's you. So you need to take charge of the meetings. Set the date and time - and time limit - and invite the client to the meeting. When you are the one who calls and runs the meeting, you can control the flow and the outcomes. After all, the meeting is for you to get clarity on what the client needs done. 2. Set an agenda Be sure you know exactly what you are going to cover in your meeting. Create and agenda and stick to it. For my clients, I had a set agenda depending on what services I provided for them. My business coach clients the agenda went something like this: 1. Money (what's coming in, what is in arrears, what is happening with that) 2. Clients (client issues, client updates, etc) 3. Ongoing projects (quick status update on what was outstanding for things like blog posts or event setups) 4. Upcoming projects (longer term stuff we were working on that was in process and 5. New Stuff (what happened last week that will result in new work down the road) The key to the weekly production meeting is to give a high level overview of what is going on - details are for your project management system. With that agenda, there were specific topics we would discuss and both of us knew what to bring to the call to ensure that we covered it all and still stayed within our booked time. Very efficient. 3. Keep it on time Another complaint is that meetings run over time. Because you have taken charge of the meeting, it is up to you to keep it on time. Everyone's time is valuable, and it's important to stay on task. Use your agenda and make sure that if something goes down a rabbit hole you save it by saying something as simple as 'okay I'll get that info and circle back with more information'. Don't screen share on your call unless the client needs to approve something and you have to show it to them. Don't do research on your call. If a decision can't be made on a call because there is further research to be done, it's an open item and it goes on the schedule to be worked on in the coming week. Keeping a meeting on time also means starting on time. If you are attending a meeting, show up 5 mins early or on time - not 5 mins late. Don't extend a meeting is your client shows up late. Implore them to show up on time or reschedule. 4. Leave with action items The purpose of a meeting is to make decisions, as we have already stated. So that means when a decision has been made, then it's time to take action on it. Summarize the action items for the items discussed, and then keep them up to date in your project management system. Take notes during each meeting - according to your agenda, and provide those back to the client so you both agree on what was discussed and decided. Make sure you don't send a transcript, just a brief summary of item discussed and what follow is necessary. And again, if something requires more research or discussion, add it as an open item for next meeting and circle back to it on the next production call. 5. Follow up If there are open items from your meeting, be sure to follow up with them - enter them into your project management system as a project or task to be completed, and keep the client up to date on progress until completion. Calling them next steps on your agenda works great. A little trick I have learned is to schedule your meeting for 20 minutes, but book 30 into your own calendar. End your meeting on time and take the next 10 minutes to process the action items and information from the meeting. That way you can close it out, bill the client 30 minutes and be organized for your week to come. If you haven't run meetings like this in the past, you can do it! It may take some practice in the beginning, so you can start with 30 minutes if that helps - but always try to do better, and get them as efficient as possible. If you have 5 clients and each other them needs 2 hours of meetings a week, that takes 10 working hours out of your schedule. Not to mention that client is now getting billed for 8 hours worth of meetings every month instead of 8 hours work of work done. By keeping them to 15 minutes and make them work for both of you, the client only gets billed 1 hour for meetings in a month, and more work gets done. Win win! Doing meetings more efficiently can buy you back that time, but it also vastly increases your productivity - and your communication with your clients. It asserts your expertise because you are the one running the meetings. Working efficiently is something we can work on together in The Virtual Circle, my mastermind group for Virtual Assistants. Check it out at www.YourVAMentor.com/TVC (the virtual circle) - I bet it's exactly what you need to start working more efficiently. If you need some help with working more efficiently, time management, or productivity, reach out to me at tracey@yourvamentor.com I've helped hundreds of VAs through their challenges and got them on their way to the next thing through private or group coaching. I'd love to do the same for you. That's all I've got for you this week, see you next time!

Percy Deal is a member of the Diné (or Navajo) Nation. He's a rancher and a community advocate from Black Mesa, Arizona, and deeply involved in local community and government issues for the last 45 years. He continues to use his expertise in educating and advocating for community transition on Black Mesa. Christine had the opportunity to sit down with Percy and learn about the very real challenges many Diné community members face, and why creating an equitable transition in Black Mesa is a core issue and need. Lean in as Percy shares words of wisdom and offers a glimpse of the future that many additional communities will face if the current circumstances are not addressed. Thank you for tuning into the Yes! We Rise Podcast. You are part of this collective resilience! A Call To Action For lasting change to occur, we must all do our part. Make your voice heard. Contact elected leaders, the Navajo Government, the Department of the Interior, and Congress. Write letters demanding that they visit the Navajo Nation, to experience the current circumstances Percy and his greater community are facing everyday. Implore that they see firsthand their homes, their land, their transportation. And vote! We must elect officials that are for the people, not the industry. We need advocates for restoration, fighting climate change, and providing resources to the Navajo Nation and all communities. You have the power and the ability to create much needed change! Thank you for your support. LINKS/RESOURCES MENTIONED Learn more about Percy Deal and Tó Nizhóni Ání. If you missed it, tune in to Christine's interview with Nicole Horseherder on Episode 19. We Rise podcast features solutions-seekers, change-makers, and those creating a resilient future. We share stories and strategies to inspire action to build collective resilience and community transformation. To create change, people need to feel like they belong and that they are part of a growing movement. They need to know their voice matters and that they have the inspiration, agency and ability to transform their lives and their communities. They are the key to a resilient future. From the Navajo Nation to the mountains of Appalachia, incredible work is being done by community members and leaders. Change is often sparked by inspiration: seeing what others have done, especially in similar situations and places. People see that when someone looks like them or lives in a place like theirs, and has created real, true and lasting change, change that will allow their granddaughters and grandsons to thrive — they begin to imagine what might be possible for them. No longer waiting for someone else to come and save them, they realize they are the ones they have been waiting for. But what creates that spark? What creates that inspiration? Learning through stories and examples, feeling a sense of agency and belonging, and getting fired up to kick ass creates that spark. We Rise helps community leaders and members learn to forge a new path toward creating resilience and true transformation. One person at a time, one community at a time, one region at a time, the quilt of transformation can grow piece by piece until resilience becomes the norm instead of the exception. Together, we rise.
In this session we discuss - the value of synthesizing kindness and discipline - can speech ever replace action - the pros and cons of a spiritual relationship vs a practice-oriented one - which is more convenient and which is more preferable.

We live in a culture that seems to have no problem persuading one another to our line of thinking. So why are we so hesitant to influence others about the one thing that's truly going to matter when all is said and done?
