ASTS 058: Listening To... GODZILLA! (The Showa Era, Part 1)

A Score To Settle

Hello and welcome back to the podcast! Starting with this episode, I present another entry in my "Listening To... " sub-series, this time focused on that long running film franchise with a massive pop cultural footprint, GODZILLA!   While it's a pop culture reference known the world over, GODZILLA is perhaps best understood by one country and culture, that being Japan and its people. But what does GODZILLA music sound like? We might know it when hear it, but where did it begin? The scaly behemoth has been a towering figure of science fiction and monster movie cinema ever since the original movie, GOJIRA, premiered in Japan in 1954, inadvertently beginning what emerged as a popular sub-genre called "kaiju eiga".   During the more than 70 years of big screen adventures, this series has journeyed from apocalyptic, black & white installments, to colorful kid-friendly monster mashes, topical storylines and splashy, big budget epics. Keeping pace with this is a great wealth of musical variety, from a number of talented composers, but the originator of it all is Akira Ifukube, a legend in Japanese film and music circles. It is Ifukube's music for the Showa era that is the focus of this first episode.   Title playtime index: Intro - 00:00 "Modern Monster Movie Music Suite" - 00:05:33 GODZILLA (1954) (Akira Ifukube) - 00:13:23 KING KONG VS GODZILLA (1962) (Akira Ifukube) - 00:20:30 MOTHRA VS GODZILLA (1964) (Akira Ifukube) - 00:32:46 GHIDORAH, THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER (1964) (Akira Ifukube) - 00:36:42 INVASION OF ASTRO-MONSTER (1965) (Akira Ifukube) - 00:40:48 DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (1968) (Akira Ifukube) - 00:47:44 GODZILLA VS GIGAN (1972) (Akira Ifukube) - 00:54:33 TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (1975) (Akira Ifukube) - 01:04:30 Wrap up - 01:14:22   Stay safe out there, take care of yourself and each other!    Connect with the podcast on Facebook, Twitter and Bluesky: www.facebook.com/ascoretosettle https://twitter.com/score2settlepod https://bsky.app/profile/score2settlepod.bsky.social   Email the show at ascoretosettlepodcast@gmail.com

#metallica #music #gojira #avatarmetal #LaGaleriaNocturna GothProds Links Spotify -https://open.spotify.com/show/2hnlgkcGNl9GOAPa0WT9HW?si=7e9b95f203464fe6 Apple Podcast — https://podcasts.apple.com/mx/podcast/goth-prods/id1606324255?l=en Amazon Music — https://music.amazon.com.mx/podcasts/d10f63b6-f4f3-4a91-b21d-d98c2b08ca01/goth-prods?ref=dm_sh_xBGgYoDaqnREmWm0IoJu5r4kd Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/Goth-Prods-104237088306624/ Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/goth_prods/ TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@goth_prods

This Week in Horror History for April 27–May 3 dives into a packed week of horror movie history, horror release date anniversaries, cult horror films, monster movies, vampire cinema, Stephen King adaptations, teen witch horror, found-footage horror, fake true crime, and killer-plant sci-fi horror — from Godzilla, King of the Monsters!(1956), The Hunger (1983), Creepshow 2 (1987), and The Craft (1996) to this week's Deep-Cut Spotlight, The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007). If you love classic horror movies, '80s horror, '90s horror, gothic vampire films, anthology horror, cult classics, scary movie anniversaries, horror trivia, and hidden horror gems worth revisiting, this episode is built for you.Inside this episode:April 27, 1956 — Godzilla, King of the Monsters!: the American cut that helped turn Japan's atomic monster into a worldwide horror icon, reshaping Gojira for U.S. audiences and introducing countless viewers to Godzilla's radioactive roar, city-smashing spectacle, and nuclear-age creature-feature terror.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Criterion Channel and Cinemax channels; rentable on Apple TV.April 29, 1983 — The Hunger: Tony Scott's stylish vampire cult film, starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, and Susan Sarandon in a cold, glamorous nightmare about immortality, obsession, desire, aging, and the terrible fine print of living forever.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Tubi and Hoopla; rentable on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.May 1, 1987 — Creepshow 2: Stephen King and George Romero return to EC Comics-style anthology horror with “Old Chief Wood'nhead,” “The Raft,” and “The Hitchhiker,” delivering revenge horror, lake terror, roadside dread, comic-book punishment, and one of the nastiest killer-blob sequences of the decade.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Prime Video, Prime Video with Ads, Shout! Factory Amazon Channel, Roku Channel, Pluto TV, and Prime Video Free with Ads; rentable on Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.May 3, 1996 — The Craft: the definitive '90s teen witch horror classic, starring Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True, turning pain, power, outsider identity, high school revenge, black-lipstick rebellion, and occult coming-of-age horror into one of the most enduring cult favorites of the decade.Where to watch (U.S., this week): rentable on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Plex.Deep-Cut Spotlight — April 27, 2007: The Poughkeepsie Tapes: a fake true-crime found-footage nightmare that premiered at Tribeca, vanished into distribution limbo, leaked into horror fandom, and built its reputation like a cursed tape passed hand to hand. If you're fascinated by disturbing horror movies, mockumentary horror, serial-killer fiction, faux-documentary dread, and movies that feel like evidence you were never supposed to see, this one still has a nasty little legend around it.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Prime Video; free with ads on Tubi and the Roku Channel.Birthday Roll: Lisa Wilcox, Carolyn Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Kirsten Dunst.Weekly Recommendation — The Day of the Triffids (1963): a pulpy sci-fi horror killer-plant apocalypse where spring turns predatory, a meteor shower blinds much of humanity, and the natural world starts moving in for the kill. It's perfect for fans of classic creature features, British apocalypse horror, killer plants, survival sci-fi, and vintage horror oddities.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Tubi, Roku Channel, and Plex. From Godzilla's radioactive monster-movie legacy and The Hunger's gothic vampire glamour to Creepshow 2's Stephen King anthology horror, The Craft's teen witch cult status, The Poughkeepsie Tapes' found-footage true-crime dread, and The Day of the Triffids' killer-plant apocalypse, this episode tracks how one week between April and May delivered a wildly varied run of horror history. We watched the 1994 classic The Lion King and enjoyed the emotions inherently available in animated faces that simply cannot be duplicated in “live action.” Elton John thought the movie was ruined because his beautiful song was sung by a meerkat, but joke's on him, it was a genius move.  Sometimes you gotta have a creepy little guy sing to the main characters to get them to fall in love.  Lemuel's top Godzilla Recommendations: The original Gojira from 1954 available on HBO Max and Godzilla Minus One available on Netflix - and to get an even better viewing, watch Godzilla Minus One Minus Color.  Next up: Pocahontas (1995) Email us at latecomers@gmail.com Our Facebook group is here for those who consent: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1754020081574479/ **

Japan's political scene is changing—from new parties rising in visibility to historic moments in national leadership—so the Krewe is bringing you a timely crash course. Political analyst Tobias Harris (Founder & Principal of Japan Foresight) joins the pod to break down the foundations of Japan's government system, how it compares to the U.S., and why voters view politics the way they do. We explore the major and emerging parties shaping the landscape, the issues driving debate today, and how international pressures and global events influence domestic policy. Tobias also sheds light on the media's role in shaping public perception and political accountability.------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. On this episode of The Metal Maniacs Podcast, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd sit down via Zoom with one of the Midwest's most terrifyingly powerful death metal forces — CASKET ROBBERY! Hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, this band has carved out a bloody niche in modern metal by blending crushing grooves, eerie melodies, and horror-inspired atmosphere into a sound that's unmistakably their own.We dig deep into the dark roots and evolution of the band, from their humble beginnings in 2011 with founding guitarist Cory Scheider (ex-Luna Mortis, Epicurean), to the arrival of their ferocious vocalist Megan Orvold-Scheider, whose commanding voice and intense stage presence have become synonymous with Casket Robbery's brand of death metal destruction. We cover everything from the inception of the band and the origin of their name, to their writing process, tone crafting, production methods, and the bloody live shows that leave fans both terrified and exhilarated. Casket Robbery's story is one of dedication, evolution, and sheer brutality — with a wink and a scream.

In this episode, I talk with Jungian analyst and musician Rodney Waters about his remarkable thesis, The Orphic Descent. Rodney explores how the myth of Orpheus reveals the deep psychological and spiritual power of music—its ability to connect opposites, suspend suffering, and awaken what's lifeless within us.We trace his journey from classical pianist to Jungian analyst and discuss how music serves as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious, spirit and matter. Rodney reflects on Orpheus as the archetypal musician whose song could soften even the gods of the Underworld, while I share how a Gojira concert unexpectedly became a moment of transcendence for me.This conversation invites you to listen differently—to hear music not just as sound, but as a living symbol of the psyche's movement toward wholeness.

MONSTER PARTY HAS A KAIJU QUERY? JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD pose a question that speaks to monster kids of every generation! We just gotta know… ARE YOU GODZILLA-CURIOUS? Since he first stomped onto the screen in 1954, Godzilla has had a lasting presence in pop culture. Over the decades, he has been portrayed in many different incarnations: embodiment of nuclear devastation, charismatic anti-hero, superhero to children, multi-form menace, and finally… Oscar winner!! And although Godzilla may not be everyone's cup of sake, there are those chosen elite who see those distinctive back fins and hear that iconic roar, and think, “What makes that kaiju tick?” In this episode, we'll discuss Godzilla's unique appeal, the effectiveness of his colorful enemies and allies (Varan, who may not want to listen to this part), and the constantly-changing stylistic choices that delight and enrage his fans. By breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of the various entries in Godzilla's long filmography, we'll attempt to shed light on why Godzilla has managed to maintain his worldwide grip on audiences. Take your pick: from the grim symbolism of Gojira, the swinging '60s space vibe of Invasion of the Astro Monster, the “Afterschool Special” lessons of All Monsters Attack, the mind-blowing weirdness of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, the “everything but the kitchen sink “splendor of Godzilla Vs. Biollante, the big-budget mainstreaming of the Legendary Godzilla series, the Dr. Strangelove satire of Shin Godzilla, or the grounded historical drama of Godzilla Minus One. Whatever your taste, Godzilla's got you covered. Joining us for this audio visit to Monster Island are two very special guests making their MONSTER PARTY debut! First up, we've got a celebrated Rotten Tomatoes-Approved film critic, a member of the Hollywood Creative Alliance and the African American Film Critics Association, and a super hardcore Godzilla fan! His work has been featured in VARIETY, WE LIVE ENTERTAINMENT, WHY SO BLU, FIRSTSHOWING.NET, BATTLESHIP PRETENSION, SCREEN RANT, THE CODE IS ZEEK, and the podcast, OUT NOW WITH AARON AND ABE. We also have an award-winning filmmaker, who is another Rotten Tomatoes-Approved film critic, a member of the Hollywood Critics Association and the African American Film Critics Association, and the owner of LeNoirAuteur.net! And would you believe, he's very Godzilla-curious? And fitting to the theme of this episode, our two guests happen to be the hosts of the always entertaining and informative podcast, TWO BLACK GUYS TALK GODZILLA! Please give an atomic breath-warmed welcome to… AARON NEUWIRTH and TERENCE JOHNSON! DESTROY ALL ILL-CONCEIVED NOTIONS ABOUT GODZILLA! AND GO EASY ON VARAN.

Ozzy did sets with the No More Tears band, including Zakk and then finished the nearly 11 hour concert with the original Black Sabbath, ending in fireworks and quite a lot of tears.
