This edition of the DBG Times covers a wide range of rock and metal history, along with notable Rockstar Deathdays honoring Phil Lynott, Neil Peart, Steve Clark, Eddie Clarke, Sylvain Sylvain, and John Sykes. Looking back 10 years to 2016, the show revisits releases from Black Sabbath and Megadeth, including Sabbath's final studio-era material and Megadeth's well-received return to a heavier, more classic sound. From 2001, we highlight Turn 21 by The Donnas, an album that helped solidify their identity and garner more recognition. Going back 30 years to 1996, the discussion includes albums from Accept and Mr. Big, reflecting a challenging era as traditional hard rock and metal faced shifting trends. At 35 years (1991), we touch on notable releases by David Lee Roth, Drivin' N Cryin', and Motörhead, showcasing the variety of sounds coming out of the early '90s. Looking at 1986, we revisit Seventh Star by Black Sabbath and the long-delayed debut of White Lion, two releases with very different paths and outcomes. From 1981, the episode covers peak-era albums by 38 Special, April Wine, and Styx, all enjoying major commercial success during this period. Jumping back 50 years to 1976, we discuss releases from Bad Company and Grand Funk Railroad, each facing internal and external challenges at different points in their careers. Wrapping up the historical portion at 55 years (1971), we explore early albums from ZZ Top, Mountain, Lucifer's Friend, and Dust, capturing the formative years of heavy rock and metal. The episode also includes a rundown of new rock and metal releases, featuring recent albums from Alter Bridge, Bullet, Kreator, Gluecifer, Helix, and a final studio release tied to the farewell era of Megadeth. This week on Toilet Radio: We’re talkin’ ’bout Dave Mustaine’s last ride with Megadeth and his cover of Metallica’s Ride the Lightning that sounds just about exactly how you would expect it to sound. Age comes for us all. ALSO: Bandcamp is banning* AI-generated music from the platform. We talk about what that means and what it looks like in practice, with a bonus of a few whiners complaining about it. Finally, Dogma is back. Already. And they’ve unfortunately announced a US tour that is, frankly, one of the creepiest things I’ve ever read. Folks… it’s a show. On this episode of Into The Necrosphere, I continue my countdown of the best metal albums of the past twelve months. Joining me for part two is my brother in the Horsemen of the Podcasting Apocalypse, Karl Hikara—host of the excellent Sol Nox podcast, with new episodes dropping every Thursday and Sunday. Karl unleashes his Top 10 albums of 2025, while I rip through numbers 20–11 on my own year-end list of the best in metal. Then on this week's news rant, I break down new singles from Vreid, Witch Ripper, Saasta, Exodus, Monstrosity, and Uada, deliver my verdict on Megadeth's alleged final album, and dissect their controversial cover of Metallica's “Ride The Lightning.” PLUS — a deranged electro-weasel gets dunked on my Swirly of the Week. Chris, Rob and John wonder what AI is up to these days before making the most elegant transition from complaining about the weather to quaaludes you've ever heard. Also, Rob's Crypto Corner returns (kind of), they discuss the various versions of the new Megadeth album available and let you know that you can now submit your music to CDIR. Finally, they find a non-visual Buzzfeed quiz, and kick it's butt! Enjoy!!

The "Second Coming" of deathcore isn't just a trend—it's a hostile takeover. As giants like Whitechapel and Lorna Shore redefine the genre's boundaries, Ov Sulfur has emerged as the next definitive force with their sophomore tour-de-force, Endless. In this high-velocity episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, I sit down with guitarist Chase Wilson to discuss creative bravery, the evolution of blackened deathcore, and why purity in metal is officially dead. Plus, we break down the seismic 2026 news: Mudvayne's hiatus, Chad Gray's solo pivot, and the emotional impact of Megadeth's final studio testament.
The boys (minus one) break format to pore over poorly picked heroes, say goodbye to “Dangerous” Dave Mustaine, and review Megadeth's seventeenth, self-titled, and allegedly final studio album.
Rob discusses this documentary he saw on Jewish Iranians to start the show. We learn there is a Jewish member of Iranian Parliment even. We discuss the new Megadeth album release, and check in with some new Dave Mustaine interviews where he discusses his long-standing "friendship" with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. We check in with Roger Waters grilled by Pierre S Morgan for mocking Ozzy Osbourne. And finally, we check in with the man who claims he has the world's smallest penis. NEW! If the friendship was restarted, it wouldn't bother me. I would accept, and I think it would be nice to revisit some of those times. But I just think because there was a lot of hurt and misunderstanding around our time together that it would be difficult not to keep bringing up the past. I think what needs to happen is there needs to be a Megadeth/Metallica tour. Period. That would, I'm sure, make everything right. We could hang out. Spend time together. But I know they don't really tour like we do. I mean, when we go out on tour, we play many, many shows.” (Revolver)
If you've been anywhere near the metal world lately, you've probably felt the buzz: Megadeth is about to write its final chapter — and they're going out in massive style. After 40+ years of thrash-metal dominance, Dave Mustaine and co. are rolling out their seventeenth and final studio album, due January 23, 2026. Yep, Megadeth — simple and bold — and intentionally definitive, like dropping the mic after four decades of shredding. But here's the twist (and the fun part) — the album's debut isn't just about streaming drops and vinyl variants. The band has paired the record with something bigger: a global cinematic event called Megadeth: Behind The Mask. This isn't your average rock documentary. On January 22nd (and 24th), fans in over 1,000 theaters across 35+ countries will get to check out a very limited screening of the film, which doubles as a full album listening experience and an emotional trip through the band's history. It's part biography, part celebration. Dave Mustaine himself narrates — unpacking untold stories from four decades on the road, moments of triumph and chaos, and what it really means to call Megadeth a career. But interwoven with that legacy is the world premiere of the new album in full, complete with Mustaine's track-by-track insights. It's one thing to hear a new song at home, but quite another to sit in a crowd, lights dimmed and experience the riffs pounding through a cinema sound system.Fans who've gotten early looks describe Behind The Mask as more than a promo — it's a celebration of the band's identity, its influence, and the unmistakable voice of Mustaine, still sharp as ever.Whether you're hyped to hear new tracks like "Tipping Point" and "I Don't Care", or simply here to honor a legacy that shaped metal, this rollout feels like a tribute with teeth — an immersive last hoorah from one of thrash's greatest.Dave & I discuss it all, plus his love of Philadelphia and so much more! In this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, we sit down with author, professor, and 80s tribute-band guitarist Jesse Kavadlo to talk about his new book Rock of Pages: The Literary Tradition of 1980s Heavy Metal and why those songs about girls, demons, and good times were actually wrestling with nuclear fear, censorship, and what it meant to grow up under the Cold War.Jesse walks us through how 80s metal lyrics connect to classic literature, from Def Leppard reimagining Genesis and Paradise Lost to Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne grappling with existential dread, addiction, and the possibility of global annihilation. We dig into the PMRC hearings and satanic panic, the way MTV videos turned escapism into literal chains and magic portals, and how Stranger Things surprisingly nails the mix of danger and freedom that metal kids actually felt in the 80s. Along the way, we talk subculture vs. streaming-era playlists, why Dio and Iron Maiden might be the true heirs of Romantic poetry, and how heavy metal may have nudged the Cold War toward its end at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. If you care about 80s heavy metal, the MTV era, or just love thinking about how songs work under the hood, this episode is for you. Fans of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, Dio, and even Steel Panther's parody universe will hear this music in a new way. And if you're into how culture and politics collide in sound—think the way punk, hip-hop, or grunge carried the anxieties of their eras—you'll find a lot to chew on here too.Episode Highlights0:00 – Intro / Setting the stage How Jesse went from Brooklyn club stages and opening for Danger Danger to a PhD in literature and an 80s tribute band in St. Louis, and why 80s metal still gets written off as “by and for dummies” while Dylan and Kendrick win major literary prizes.5:12 – Are 80s metal lyrics actually literature? Cassette liner notes, goofy rhymes, and serious themes: Jesse breaks down how synecdoche, personification, metaphor, and symbolism show up in songs by Def Leppard, Metallica, and Twisted Sister.12:45 – PMRC, Tipper Gore, and the fight over teenage imagination We revisit the 1985 PMRC hearings, Dee Snider's testimony, and why “Under the Blade” and “Suicide Solution” say more about adult panic than teen corruption.20:30 – Cold War metal: Bon Jovi to Nuclear Assault How videos like Bon Jovi's “Runaway” and songs by Metallica, Ozzy, Megadeth, and Nuclear Assault carried nuclear anxiety, class conflict, and apocalyptic dread beneath all the hairspray.28:10 – Escapism, fantasy, and why Dio matters From Dungeons & Dragons to Iron Maiden and Dio, we explore metal's love of magic, fantasy, and portals as a deeply human response to a world that often felt unlivable.36:40 – MTV, chains, and the magic door We unpack the visual language of 80s metal videos: breaking out of asylums and prisons, falling through mirrors, and what it meant to “escape to the concert” once metal hit the mainstream.45:05 – Outsiders selling millions of records Why metal fans still felt like misfits even as the music dominated MTV, and how that outsider identity overlaps with the way readers and writers see themselves.52:30 – Van Halen, class struggle, and 1984 From “Running with the Devil” and “Jump” to “Hot for Teacher,” we look at David Lee Roth's working-class storytelling, school-as-prison imagery, and the eerie resonance of naming an album 1984 in the synth-drenched futureshock of the mid-80s.1:01:10 – Cowboys, Road Warriors, and the end of the world How metal videos borrowed from Escape from New York, The Road Warrior, and cowboy mythology to build a visual language of lawless survival and American ruggedness.1:09:45 – W.A.S.P., Nine Inch Nails, and moving the line What it means that W.A.S.P.'s “Animal (F*** Like a Beast)” got pulled from shelves while “Closer” became a critical darling, and how censorship lines shifted from the 80s to the 90s.1:18:20 – White Lion, Living Colour, and the politics hiding in band names We get into White Lion's unexpected political conscience, the uncomfortable optics of Pride, and how Living Colour wore their politics more explicitly.1:25:40 – How to listen differently after Rock of Pages Jesse explains how he hopes readers (and listeners) revisit 80s metal: with streaming open, videos queued up, and an ear tuned to metaphor, context, and the way these songs helped kids survive their era.1:33:50 – What's next and where to find the book Jesse hints at possible 90s projects and shares where to find Rock of Pages through Bloomsbury, indie bookstores, and the usual suspects. If this conversation makes you want to pull your old cassettes out of the box (or at least re-open your 80s metal playlist), don't stop here.Dive into the full archive of 70s & 80s metal episodes, history-of-the-band deep dives, and mixtapes at digmeoutpodcast.com.Join the DMO Union for bonus episodes, new release reviews, polls, and our private Discord community at dmounion.com.Subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with the friend who still swears 80s metal was “just for fun.” Let's prove, once and for all, that the music that raised us was doing a lot more than just partying. Our second set from Breakfast of Champions comes chock full of breakbeats from our one and only Rumblemunk. In his words: The set starts with a cool and funky transition track with some well-known vocals to keep folks hooked. I admit: it's hard playing after shOOey. There are literally people hanging from the rafters and dancers all over the stage, and I try my best to keep them interested for as long as possible. The core of the set is an exploration of recent breakbeats that sound minimal, but really are an evolution of the 90s dub sound that traces directly from reggae to drum and bass. The 60-70 BPM of dub double-timed up to high 130s and low 140s BPM forces faster elements like hats and arpeggios to be simplified, but leaves space for really interesting layering when slowed down to 132 BPM. There's a run from 12:30 to 17:30 that exemplifies this layering and progression before dropping back into the more open foot-stompy breaks. I hadn't played it in a while, and was sort of missing the rapid-fire rapping of Eminem, so I dropped in Eminight's Doom, my bootleg of Eminem's Without Me and Timo Maas' Doom's Night. It wraps up a nice run of Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, and Yo Speed. The final act of the set is a trip back through time to 2004 with deep cuts from Plump DJs, Evil Nine, and the Breakfastaz (name appropriate, no?). This all leads into the final track; a breakbeat remix of Megadeth's Peace Sells (But Who's Buying) from 1988. I was looking for something topical for the current times with space for live guitar, but wasn't finding any tracks that worked. The idea of remixing Megadeth has been on my mind for a while, and the similar BPM and angry lyrics (If there's a better way... I'll be the first in line... But it better work this time) meant I had to do this. The live guitar bit didn't pan out, but production time of 7 weeks from idea to master is a new record for me. Expect an official release with live guitar and club edits later in 2026. -Rumblemunk
This week we're sharing a series of episodes that capture one of our favorite themes on Second Act Stories: the moment when life changes key. These Key Changes episodes feature people whose lives have been shaped by music: some who left it behind for something new; others who found their way to it later than expected. Together, they're the stories we return to when we want to show how reinvention really works, not as a clean break, but as a shift in rhythm, perspective, and purpose. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering the show, these episodes reflect the heart of the podcast: bold pivots, unexpected harmony, and second acts that still have plenty to say. Dan Spitz is a true pioneer in every sense of the word. As the lead guitarist of legendary band Anthrax, Dan was one of the innovators who birthed the entire genre of thrash metal music. Anthrax is one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands, a group that also includes Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. He sold millions of albums, played on the world's biggest stages, and saw his music influence legions of acts that would follow. In 1995, as Anthrax continued to reach new heights, something changed. Dan realized his heart was no longer in it, so he quit the band without a plan for what was next. Dan had been exposed to watchmaking at a young age through his grandfather, who owned a jewelry store where he repaired watches in New York's Catskill Mountains. That childhood experience came rushing back when he stumbled across an ad for the Bulova watchmaking school. The pieces fit together as perfectly as the mechanics of a complicated watch, and Dan enrolled, graduating a four-year program in 18 months. Then he became the first American to be accepted into a Swiss watchmaking school, and his incredible second act was official. Today, Dan is one of the world's most sought-after master watchmakers. He's the watchmaker who watchmakers go to when they can't solve a problem. In this episode, you'll hear some of the details about the birth of thrash metal, the conflict that led to Dan's departure from Anthrax, and the journey that led a thrash metal legend become a legend in the world of fine watches. Disciples!! Here we go – the first of 2 episodes to put a bow on the year 2025. In this episode Nate and I will be discussing our personal top 10 albums of the year that was. Man, it doesn’t fee like it was that long ago… Enjoy!,,/ d(> _
“Forbidden and Death Angel at the Center Stage was my 2nd thrash show…” Imagine learning about all of the latest and greatest metal bands without the help of Spotify or the internet. Back in THE METAL DAYS OF YORE, it was all about social networking (sans social media) and getting dubbed cassettes from your friends (or forming your own metal band with those friends) that helped you on your way towards finding the greatest and most obscure thrash and metal that you were looking for. “I almost got my ass kicked by a bunch of guys in make-up…” It's time for a HEAVY METAL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION in The Bunkerpoon because we've got a very special guest with us and we're talking all about the glory days of our metal youth. From our first thrash and arena rock shows to our first band experiences, to all of the bands we got into back in the late 80's and early 90's, this episode will feel like a trip back in time. “The only one of us that should have their tits out is probably Bill…” To everyone who attended (or skipped) high school during 1987 to 1992 (or thereabouts), and anyone who wonders what that experience must have been like, we invite you to JOIN US in The Bunkerpoon Lounge as we wax nostalgic about “the good old days” of ancient metal venues, early concerts, and our favorite bands and albums from our teen years with our very own HEAVY METAL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. Dave Mustaine opens up about Megadeth's self-titled final album and the health issues affecting his hands and back that influenced his decision to wind down the band. He shares insights on recording with guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari for the first time, his choice to cover Metallica's 'Ride the Lightning,' and the upcoming tour with Iron Maiden. Mustaine also discusses the band's documentary 'Megadeth: Behind the Mask' premiering in theaters, his relationship with former bandmates, and his successful ventures into wine and beer. Also on the podcast, The Warning, a rock trio of sisters from Monterrey, Mexico, joins Eddie Trunk to discuss their remarkable journey from playing the Rock Band video game as children to selling out venues across the world. Danny, Paulina, and Alejandra share how they naturally fell into their roles as guitarist/vocalist, drummer, and bassist, and how their parents' love of music shaped their path. They discuss the challenges of being young women in rock, their special sibling bond, and the passionate Mexican rock scene.
