The verdict is in! The new self titled Megadeth album has found a regular spot on our stereos. And it's awesome! If this record is indeed the swan song for Dave and the Boyz, they can go out with their heads held high and their Horns in the air. This week we decided to take a cue from the amazing "High Fidelity" flick and share our Top 5 Megadeth albums from their vast discography. And where exactly this new record fits it, if at all. Always makes for a great conversation. In our "News, Views and Tunes', our home state university USC brought home the gold in the Metallica Marching Band Competition!! Musically, we crank some New and Used from Agnostic Front, MDC, Laaz Rockit, 7 Year Bitch, Carnivore AD, Axe Victims and we introduce Brazilian bashers Stygian in our "Indie Spotlight'. Horns Up!!

By 1986, Metallica's assault on the music establishment and eardrums was in full force. Their previous album, Ride The Lightning, had caught the attention of Elektra Records who signed them to an 8 record deal. Though they refused to make videos, weren't on MTV and didn't really release singles, the band gained fans anywhere they played live and through an underground tape trading community. They were establishing thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax through constant touring and a relentless lifestyle. The boys really upped their game on Master of Puppets through stronger vocals from James Hetfield, more punishing riffs and melodic (and sometimes spacey) bass from Cliff Burton. The opener Battery sets the tone for this very influential album before giving way to the 8+ minute title track. True to form, Metallica offered up an instrumental in Orion which was heavily influenced by the classical training of Cliff Burton. Songs about war (Disposable Heroes), fake evangelism (Leper Messiah), insanity Welcome Home (Sanitarium) make for one amazing heavy metal album, the likes of which the world hadn't seen. We talk about the songs, what they mean in the Metallica catalog, their tour for the record with Ozzy and of course the tragedy in Sweden that took the life of Cliff Burton. From underground band to being featured on Stranger Things, the journey of Master of Puppets is one for the ages. “That's the buzz word: every time somebody says, ‘tipping point', you must drink…” Whether it's measured by a string of commercially successful albums or one's own personal preference, almost every metal band has (at a minimum) produced a TRILOGY of albums that represent a three-album run of back-to-back-to-back awesomeness. “That's the law, man…it's gotta be three…rules is rules.” Granted, we're all very well aware that some bands have far exceeded such a phenomenal feat THRICE in a row. But to keep things fair, we limited our parameters to the perfect TRIFECTA of albums representing a band's turkey, hat trick, or as we refer to it here at Bunkerpoon Palace, “the power threesome of perfection”. “It's a quadraplatic-ogy…” When in doubt, remember that “y'all should be more like Paul” and keep in mind that you “can't say that word!” because “all therapists are gonna be upset”. Go ahead and fire up your “Grinder Tinder” account, discover the wonders of “self-service hibachi”, and get ready to “Ride the Puppets of Justice” when you JOIN US for A TRILOGY OF PERFECT METAL ALBUMS. When an Australian thrash band that never broke big in the U.S. gets compared to early Metallica, Slayer, and Maiden in the same breath, you know you've stumbled onto something special. This episode dives into Mortal Sin's 1986 debut Mayhemic Destruction—a ferocious, drum‑heavy, DIY thrash record from Sydney that plays like a missing puzzle piece in 80s metal history.Across the conversation, the hosts unpack how Mortal Sin emerged out of Australia's pub‑rock and Buffalo‑style heavy scene into a faster, more aggressive sound after drummer Wayne Campbell discovered Metallica through tape‑trading in 1984. They trace the band's rapid rise from self‑funded studio upstarts to landing a global deal, touring with Metallica, Megadeth, and Testament, and struggling with that classic “too big for pubs, too small for arenas” problem back home. Along the way, they dig into the band's revolving‑door lineup, eerie mystery around the original drummer's disappearance, and the evolution of Mortal Sin's sound across later records.Musically, the episode zeroes in on what makes Mayhemic Destruction such a compelling outlier in 80s thrash. The drums and low end dominate the mix in a way that completely inverts the American template, forcing listeners to dig for the guitars and exposing a strange, rewarding hybrid of thrash, New Wave of British Heavy Metal, power metal, Motörhead grit, and proto‑death‑metal experiments on the title track. There's plenty of love for the riffs, time‑changes, and dark modal choices in songs like “The Curse” and “Lebanon,” but also honest criticism of the limited, Hetfield‑ish vocal approach and the odd sequencing choices that bury some of the strongest material in the back half.If you're into 80s thrash metal, early Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, NWOBHM, or obscure Australian metal bands that never quite got their due, this deep dive into Mortal Sin and Mayhemic Destruction is absolutely in your wheelhouse. It's a conversation about more than one album—it's about how geography, timing, and weird production decisions can turn a record into a cult artifact waiting to be rediscovered.Episode Highlights0:00 – Mayhem from Sydney – Setting up Mortal Sin, Mayhemic Destruction, and why this Australian thrash debut matters in the 80s metal landscape.5:05 – Battle jackets and logos – Gavin's origin story with Mortal Sin via patches, Kerrang! mags, and why some bands lived as imagery long before you ever heard a note.7:00 – Band history and lineup chaos – From Sydney origins and early rehearsals with Lino to global deals, tours with Metallica and Megadeth, and constant guitar player turnover.12:05 – DIY Mega Metal and Hetfield's stamp – Recording at 301 Studios, self‑releasing the album, mailing it out like a zine, and landing James Hetfield's 1986 endorsement.17:20 – “The Curse” – How the opening riffing, harmonics, and dissonant second‑guitar lines signal that Mortal Sin aren't just copying Bay Area thrash.22:30 – Drum mix from another planet – Why the massive, low‑end‑heavy drum sound flips the usual thrash hierarchy and changes how you hear the riffs and groove.24:50 – “Lebanon” – Dark, almost Slayer‑like scales, Dokken/Mr. Scary vibes, and how this track becomes a standout for mood and melody.25:30 – Thrash without a ballad – The near‑total absence of slow songs, the fake‑out intro of “Liar,” and what that says about the band's commitment to speed and aggression.30:15 – Honest strengths and weak spots – Praise for the riffs and rhythm section, plus a candid look at the limited vocals, buried mixes, and backward‑feeling sequencing.35:25 – Album art, demons, and Sydney in ruins – The Dungeons & Dragons‑style cover, nuked‑city imagery, and why this screamed “Tipper Gore nightmare” in the 80s.35:30 – “Mayhemic Destruction” (title track) – Proto‑death‑metal vocals and blast beats a year before Death's Scream Bloody Gore, and why burying it as the closer was a smart move.40:30 – Live vs. studio – What the 20th anniversary live tracks reveal about the band's true sound compared to the unique, drum‑heavy studio mix.[45:00 – Final verdict – Is Mayhemic Destruction a worthy album, a decent single, or a lost cult gem in the Australian thrash canon?Love uncovering 80s metal obscurities and lost thrash gems? On this episode of Talking Guitars, we dive into a wild rock-history moment: “Randy was trying to get backstage to meet him, but Eddie was bouncing off the walls in his underwear!” That unforgettable story comes from Kelly Garni, who sets the record straight on the supposed rivalry between Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen—and the truth might surprise you. For years, fans and guitar magazines framed Rhoads and Eddie as head-to-head rivals: two young, groundbreaking players redefining rock guitar in the late '70s and early '80s. It made for irresistible headlines—just like the media-fueled tension between Metallica and Megadeth—but according to Garni, the so-called feud between Randy and Eddie was mostly fiction. Back when Van Halen was lighting up the Hollywood club scene and “Eruption” was blowing minds nightly, Rhoads was still shredding with Quiet Riot. The bands played the same circuit—Starwood one night, Gazzarri's the next—sparking rumors of a guitar war that fans couldn't get enough of. Then Randy joined Ozzy Osbourne and helped launch Ozzy's solo career into the stratosphere, and the “rivalry” narrative exploded. But Garni insists Randy had zero interest in competing. He respected Eddie's genius—he just wasn't wired to think in terms of beating anyone. The result? Not a bitter feud, but two legendary innovators pushing guitar into the future at the exact same time—each changing rock forever in their own way.

Though they were one of the first so-called “grunge” bands to sign to a major label, Alice in Chains were something of an outlier in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s Seattle scene. They didn't fall directly into the punk camp, or the hair metal camp, and even the true metalheads thought they weren't hardcore enough. This became painfully evident when the band opened a tour for Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, and were hazed, spat on, and booed. Alice's lead singer, Layne Staley, could take the criticism. He had a prankster's spirit, not to mention a rock ‘n roll attitude that paired well with his killer rock ‘n roll voice. But newfound fame was overwhelming, as was the destructive addiction to heroin Layne developed to deal with it all. Soon Layne Staley found himself lost in a jungle of his own making, not unlike the jungle that he sang so convincingly about in one of Alice in Chains' most endearing songs. Dave Mustaine returns to celebrate Megadeth's latest album reaching #1 on the charts - a rare achievement for a pure metal record. He shares the emotional moment he learned about the milestone and details the extensive marketing campaign behind the release. Despite this success, Mustaine candidly discusses the physical limitations affecting his playing ability, particularly issues with his hands that make this Megadeth's final studio album. He offers insights into standout tracks like 'Tipping Point,' 'Hey, God,' and his cover of Metallica's 'Ride The Lightning,' which he co-wrote. The conversation turns to the physical toll that decades of metal performance has taken on the 'Big Four' bands, with Mustaine suggesting a potential final Big Four show with rotating slots for Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer beneath headliners Metallica. Also on the podcast, Rival Sons frontman Jay Buchanan joins Eddie Trunk to discuss his solo album 'Weapons of Beauty', a departure from his rock band's sound featuring acoustically-driven, personal ballads. Jay reveals his unconventional creative process, spending three months in an underground desert bunker to focus on songwriting. He shares insights about the album's lead single 'Caroline', his experience acting in the Bruce Springsteen film 'Deliver Me from Nowhere', and reflects on Rival Sons' performance at Black Sabbath's farewell show. “You know what I'm hearing? This sounds like it could have been…the sidepiece…to The Black Album…” There's almost a strange, sarcastic satisfaction in knowing that the new self-titled MEGADETH album will forever be known (at least in our neck of the woods anyway) as “The White Album”. “Every time you keep talking, I just see shapes and letters…” Released on January 23, 2026, MEGADETH is the 17th studio album from Dave Mustaine and Company and represents the final chapter in the 40+ year history of the angriest, snarliest, and most progressively technical thrash band of The Big Four. And oh yeah, it debuted at NUMBER ONE on Billboard and at the top of the charts all over the world!!! While MEGADETH represents the band's epilogue, it contains all of the elements that have defined the band's sound and the ethos of the genre that they co-created with the rest of The Big Four. All of the essentials are there: insanely technical riffs, face melting guitar solos, triumphant twin guitar harmonies, as well as some more straight ahead, laid back and accessible material that screams “radio friendly” without being dull or boring. If you're a fan, you'll dig it. And if you're not a fan, who knows? You too may also dig it. “Maybe it's not pronounced ‘Tey-Muu'…it's pronounced ‘Steve'.” Always remember that “Rugby is a man's sport that should be having grindcore bands playing the halftime show…” and that “You're gonna paint secret little bushes like you paint secret little bushes… (and don't you tell anybody). Get ready for an apology from us regarding the last “White Album” review that we did, prepare for a never before heard “triple record scratch” (because we're trying to stay out of trouble) and JOIN US for Dave & Vic's swan song with MEGADETH. This week, Reggie and Jason wrap up the new releases from January 2026, including albums by Megadeth, Shintaro Sakamoto, Courtney Marie Andrews, Lucinda Williams and more. Happy listening!
Megadeth just released their 17th studio album, but unfortunately it's their last. Dave Mustaine says this is it for Megadeth music, so this week on the Rockcast, we find out why, as the legendary Dave Mustaine joins me and my morning show co-host Laura Lee for a conversation about going out on top, stories of the past, health concerns, and what it takes to be in a 40 plus year succesful band. Megadeth's self-titled album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and features his version of the Metallica classic "Ride The Lightning," co-written by Dave Mustaine.
Kick off this episode of Talking Guitars & Music News on Johnny Beane TV with a big birthday shoutout to the legend himself—Seymour Duncan!
Clint listens to the new Megadeth album with track-by-track commentary. He also breaks down the timeline of the Rick Rubin produced follow up to Death Magnetic that never happened and discusses general criticism of Rick Rubin as a producer. In this episode, you'll hear hard rock, glam, and metal bands absolutely duke it out, both with rival bands and with themselves. We dig into legendary external feuds like Guns N' Roses vs Mötley Crüe, where Axl Rose publicly challenged Vince Neil to a fistfight, and Metallica vs Winger, highlighted by Lars Ulrich literally throwing darts at a Winger poster. We also cover industry power struggles like Skid Row vs Bon Jovi, where refusing to stay an opening act allegedly led to blacklisting and some very public trash talk. The chaos doesn't stop there, as plenty of bands turned on themselves in spectacular fashion. We break down Van Halen imploding across multiple eras, Dokken recording parts separately out of sheer hatred, and Ratt splintering into multiple touring versions while suing each other over the band name. You'll also hear about long-running grudges involving Megadeth, internal dysfunction in KISS, and famously toxic relationships in bands like Enuff Z'Nuff—all proving that sometimes the biggest threat to a band's survival isn't critics or trends, but the people standing next to them onstage. Of course, there's plenty of rock feuds we didn't get to in this episode and we're pretty sure YOU have an idea of what we could cover in future volumes. In this quick-hit episode, I give my raw, no-filter reaction to Megadeth's cover of Metallica's “Ride the Lightning.”From the riffs to the feel, I break down what works, what hits different, and how it stacks up against the original thrash classic. This isn't about picking sides — it's about respect for the genre, the history, and what happens when legends reinterpret legends.Strap in. ⚡Because when Megadeth touches Ride the Lightning, sparks are guaranteed.Dave Mustaine didn't need permission to cover “Ride the Lightning.”He just needed to play it better than you remembered.
Send us a textAs far back as the early 90s when guitarist Marty Friedman was a member of the classic Megadeth line-up, he's had a fascination with Japanese music and culture. On this episode we explore Marty's 20 plus years living in Japan, his time with Megadeth, 18 solo records and his 2024 revealing autobiography “Dreaming Japanese”. We also get into what it was like reuniting with Dave Mustaine and playing with Megadeth again after two decades at the Tokyo Budokan.

This edition of the DBG Times covers a wide range of rock and metal history, along with notable Rockstar Deathdays honoring Phil Lynott, Neil Peart, Steve Clark, Eddie Clarke, Sylvain Sylvain, and John Sykes. Looking back 10 years to 2016, the show revisits releases from Black Sabbath and Megadeth, including Sabbath's final studio-era material and Megadeth's well-received return to a heavier, more classic sound. From 2001, we highlight Turn 21 by The Donnas, an album that helped solidify their identity and garner more recognition. Going back 30 years to 1996, the discussion includes albums from Accept and Mr. Big, reflecting a challenging era as traditional hard rock and metal faced shifting trends. At 35 years (1991), we touch on notable releases by David Lee Roth, Drivin' N Cryin', and Motörhead, showcasing the variety of sounds coming out of the early '90s. Looking at 1986, we revisit Seventh Star by Black Sabbath and the long-delayed debut of White Lion, two releases with very different paths and outcomes. From 1981, the episode covers peak-era albums by 38 Special, April Wine, and Styx, all enjoying major commercial success during this period. Jumping back 50 years to 1976, we discuss releases from Bad Company and Grand Funk Railroad, each facing internal and external challenges at different points in their careers. Wrapping up the historical portion at 55 years (1971), we explore early albums from ZZ Top, Mountain, Lucifer's Friend, and Dust, capturing the formative years of heavy rock and metal. The episode also includes a rundown of new rock and metal releases, featuring recent albums from Alter Bridge, Bullet, Kreator, Gluecifer, Helix, and a final studio release tied to the farewell era of Megadeth.
