How I Led During the Creek Fire | An Interview with Vicki Clason

Most of Vicki Clason's life has been spent in the tiny town of Auberry, located in the foothills near Fresno, California. Vicki loves the natural beauty and close-knit community of her foothill home where she and her husband together raised five children. Her love of community inspired Vicki to run for the local school board where she served for five years before becoming employed as a high school teacher for the same district. She is now retired and spending more time with her 11 grandchildren (with another due soon). Vicki was serving as Relief Society president when the devastating 2020 Creek Fire altered her beloved community forever. A year later, Vicki continues to serve the Auberry Ward members they rebuild and recover to create some beauty where there once was ashes. In this podcast, Vicki shares her experience as a Relief Society president during a time when 7% of her ward had to be evacuated, giving tips and advice to prepare for such crises. Highlights 3:40 Vicki's experience evacuating her family and her ward in September 2020. 7:45 Where did people go when they were evacuated? How did the stake help those that didn't have anywhere to go? 10:00 Vicki explains how she coordinated and took care of those in her ward during the evacuation. 11:50 Ministering is what really helped Vicki keep track of everyone and make sure everyone was safe. 13:20 They had a team of people calling everyone on the roster. 14:50 When there is a crisis there needs to be an organization in place to call everyone and organize information for everyone that is in the ward. Everything should be recorded on a document. 17:15 The importance of gathering. The ward wasn't able to physically gather but they gathered through Facebook and emails. Communication is key. Many were able to gather at the Stake center. 23:15 Gathering and sharing experiences brings healing. 25:20 Feelings of inadequacy as a leader in times of crisis. Heavenly Father will lift you up. You are not alone. 28:00 Vicki gives ideas of things that she feels they could have done better in an emergency situation. Each ward should create a plan and be prepared for a crisis. Hold on to your pointy hats! A whole series on witches, witch craft, fiber, and folklore! What more could you ask for this Fall? Here at the Rumpel and the Frog Show we have some burning questions at stake (see what I did there?) about everything we ever wanted to know about witches, their craft, and how it might relate to ours. We plan to take these questions wherever they lead us throughout the whole season. Rumpel begins with a historical overview of good witches and bad witches: which witch was it? Tune in to to find out! Next, Frog explores the iconography associated with witches, too. Plus, we warm up this episode with our WIP's, a fun game of association, and some swooning over the yarns we've been stitching with. So, here's to a season full of witches and stitches! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/no353l5/message

How My Stake Leads Through Social Media | An Interview with Brooke Reynolds

Brooke Hellewell Reynolds grew up in Laguna Niguel, California. She studied graphic design at Brigham Young University and moved to New York City a few days after graduation. Brooke spent 10 years in New York, art directing magazines at Martha Stewart, meeting her husband John in the Manhattan singles ward, and began working as a freelance designer after the birth of her first child. After a particularly dreary New York winter, she convinced her husband to move back to California where she has been working from home (in more ways than one) ever since. Brooke has served in stake Relief Society and Primary presidencies and currently serves as the Social Media Director in the Laguna Niguel, California stake. Though she cried when she was first called to work on social media (true story) she has since realized the great power of these inspired tools. She and her husband John have four children. In this podcast Brooke takes us through how she runs her stake's social media pages and give us ideas on how to unify our own stakes, wards, and communities using social media. Highlights 2:35 Why stake social media pages? Why not just use the church's social media? 6:20 Where to begin as a communications director. Create a stake website first. 7:57 Brooke's stake Instagram is used to share personal experiences and Come Follow Me posts. Their Facebook page shares stories and experiences of different members. It's a way to connect the stake and get to know people. 9:45 Third hour is their stake's private discussion group to discuss Come Follow Me. Each week a different member of the stake hosts and does a couple posts during the week. 10:25 Youth instagram account. Just for youth 11 to 18 years old. 11:00 Twitter account. Used to share recaps of talks from church leaders, highlights from the Church News, and local news. 11:25 Good News Laguna is a page the stake started on Instagram and Facebook that is for the community. 12:20 Stake Youtube channel. They make videos of events and Seniors graduating or a special message from the Stake Presidency. During Covid when everything was shut down stake and ward members could turn on the TV and see a message from their bishop and stake president. 13:53 Stake Podcast. It's not a formal podcast with weekly content but they pull audio from their Youtube channel or record a talk from Stake Conference. 15:10 YSA Instagram page for people 18 to 30 years old. It's the best way to get the message out because that's where they are at. 18:40 Brooke explains how she can manage all these pages and how she creates the content. 22:30 Tips on how to design content for social media 26:30 Use the missionaries as admins on Facebook to help answer questions and help community members. 30:30 Use social media to help prepare people for events and remind them when things are happening. 36:45 Where should a stake start? Brooke advises stakes to start with a website, Instagram, and matching Facebook page. 37:35 Brooke shares an experience of how using social media has helped her community. Michael E. Mann: What's at stake in our “new climate war” and how to win the fight

In 1998, Michael E. Mann and two of his colleagues published the “hockey stick” graph that would revolutionize and galvanize climate activism. It showed the exponential acceleration of global warming since 1900 and that human reliance on carbon-based fuels was making the planet hotter and the climate consequently more unstable. Mann is now a Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State and has authored several books, including his latest, The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet, a finalist for the 2021 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award. He joins the podcast to talk about why, after decades of inaction, we're at an existential crossroads: keep doing nothing and watch the planet warm to levels that create catastrophic climate change, or take the necessary steps right now to decarbonize our economy and end our dependence on fossil fuels. Listen to this episode to learn: • How a spate of inactivists and bad actors have deceived, distracted, and delayed meaningful climate action -- and that fighting against this PR and messaging campaign is the battleground of our “new climate war” • Why mainstream messaging that focuses on personal responsibility (i.e., eat less meat, cut back on air travel, lower your carbon footprint) deflects from what's really causing climate change and the big, systematic changes needed to stop it • The vital leadership role companies must play in fighting climate change -- but why corporate greenwashing initiatives and individual “net zero” commitments, while well-intentioned, are not enough • How the financial industry has in many ways been more progressive than most governments in taking meaningful action against climate change • How words like “adaptation” and “resilience” and promises of “technological innovation” are really just forms of distraction and climate inaction • Why Mann is “cautiously optimistic” about our ability to avoid catastrophic climate change

In a discussion from Louisiana Considered aired September 21, WWNO/WRKF Public Health Reporter Rosemary Westwoodand host Diane Mackdiscuss a specific case the Supreme Court will hear that  could overturn or negate the abortion rights ruling of Roe v. Wade in Louisiana. The court will decide if Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a 2018 Mississippi case which effectively bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy with no exceptions in cases of rape or incest, is constitutional. Under current Supreme Court precedent, the right to have an abortion is generally considered to be guaranteed until about 24 weeks of pregancy. If the Supreme Court upholds the lower court's ruling, then a similar 15-week abortion ban will take effect in Louisiana. Optimize Yourself
Ep163: Understanding What's At Stake With the IATSE Strike Authorization Vote | Community Q&A

Optimize Yourself

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2021 81:55

I created Optimize Yourself so that I could provide the resources to help creative professionals find fulfillment in their work and love what they do...but not at the expense of their health, their relationships, or their sanity. A natural extension of this is that we must be valued & respected for the work that we do. Without respect, no matter how much we love our jobs, our careers won't be sustainable and our passion will eventually become indifference (and sometimes even hatred). We become overworked, disrespected, and burned out. This is unfortunately what's happening right now to tens-of-thousands of below the line workers in the entertainment industry as clearly portrayed by the meteoric rise of the @IA_Stories Instagram account. In part because of the horror stories this account has amplified, The IATSE union and the AMPTP have come to a standstill in contract negotiations and the union is asking its members to vote and authorize a strike. This is a historic moment in the union's history, and it's important that all of us understand what is truly at stake beyond the deal points and the percentages. That's why I decided to have an “All-hands-on-deck” call with my Optimizer coaching & mentorship community to provide an open forum where union and non-union members alike could ask their questions, voice their opinions, and gain a better understanding of the true impact this pending vote (and strike) can have on our industry for decades to come. Whether you are in the union or you work freelance outside the union, this conversation will (hopefully) answer your questions and paint a clear picture of why you need to be paying attention to this issue. If you haven't yet read my latest article, Dear Hollywood: If We Don't Speak Up Now, The Industry As We Know It Will Never Be The Same (It's Gut Check Time), I encourage you to check it out as it provides even more context to this timely and important conversation. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: How does the current IATSE contract dispute impact non-union workers? This negotiation outcome will be a sea change in the way we advocate for ourselves. Why we need to band together and present a united front. What does is mean if we vote yes to authorize a strike? What exactly is IATSE and who are the members involved? The red ant- black ant analogy and what we should really be focused on. KEY TAKEAWAY: We need our message to reach the other IATSE locals so they understand what is at stake and can make an informed vote. When we talk about producers in this context, we are talking about the studios and the producers at AMPTP. To support our cause, union and non-union members can sign this petition on Action Network. How do we address the issue that working less hours = less pay? What ‘lifestyle creep' is and how it cripples us. One way to help alleviate fears is to create a fund to help people pay their bills. If such a fund is created, I pledge to personally put $1000 into it. Why it's important to understand the problems of the people above you and the people we are negotiating with. The only thing that will make it change is if we no longer meet those unreasonable expectations. How voting works within the guilds to vote for a strike authorization. Director Sam Lavin weighs in about the situation and gives a director's perspective. Canceling our streaming services is not the way to fight back. It comes down to how willing we are to set boundaries to protect ourselves. Ricardo is seeing younger generation of workers stepping up and setting boundaries for themselves so there is hope for the future. Please vote with your heart and do what you feel is right as long as you have all the information you need. If you can't vote, please spread the word to the right people so they understand what the conversation is about. Brace yourselves. The goalposts have been moved and the Earth is shifting under our feet yet again. When asked how many people need to be vaccinated for life to "go back to normal", Biden responded by saying "the vast majority" and "98%." This is a huge departure from his administration's guidance. Before, their goal was two thirds of the population. Then it was three quarters. Now, it's the "overwhelming majority." Meanwhile, Canada is admitting to faking its COVID death data and a peer-reviewed study shows that the vaccine is more dangerous for children than the virus is. We can't let the facts interfere with the globalist "Great Reset" narrative, though... This is EPISODE 765 of So to Speak w/ Jared Howe!

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 26th September. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to an old, new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CHAD LANE. He signed up three months ago and I'm only just now adding him to the list in the show notes because I'm an idiot! 1 IN 4 NEW CARS ARE PLUG-INS IN WESTERN EUROPE "Consisting of BEVs (fully electric passenger cars) and PHEVs (plug-in hybrids), externally rechargeable new passenger car registrations or New Emission Vehicles (NEVs) accounted for  close on to one quarter of the total new passenger car market in August according to exclusive data published in the European Electric Car Report each month. The 18 market West European region* witnessed combined BEV/PHEV volumes reach 152,000 units in August, or 24.2 per cent of the total new passenger car market within the same region. But 16,000 EVs out of 1.2 million is just a drop in the bucket. Drive Electric Week kicks off today to accelerate EV adoption." Ryan Kawailani Ozawa @hawaii 'THE BUTTON' ARRIVES "After months of waiting, Tesla owners who wish to take part in the company's FSD Beta program could now formally request the advanced driver-assist system to be loaded into their vehicle. The release of the “Request FSD Beta” button comes before the rollout of FSD Beta 10.1, which is expected to be distributed to the company's testers over the weekend." says Teslarati.com: "Similar to the FSD Beta program that has initially been released to the company's first batch of testers last October, Tesla made it a serious point to highlight that safety must be paramount when using the advanced driver-assist system. This could be seen in the heavy emphasis on cautious driving that the company references in its recent update, as well as the use of Safety Scores to determine which drivers are eligible for the program. Tesla also made it clear that access to the advanced driver-assist system could be revoked at any time. " Read more: https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-fsd-beta-wide-release-notes "You can now request early access to Full Self-Driving Beta pending eligibility. To get started, tap ‘Controls'>' Autopilot'>Request Full Self-Driving Beta' and follow the instructions.” “Thank you for your interest in limited early access Full Self-Driving Beta! The Tesla team is analyzing your vehicle driving data and Safety Score to determine eligibility. You can view your Safety Score from the Tesla app at any time (version 4.1.0 or newer). If eligible, you will receive a software update as part of the limited early access,” Tesla wrote, adding that owners also have the option to opt-out of the FSD Beta test program.  "The move delighted fans of CEO Elon Musk and Tesla, but it risks drawing the ire of federal vehicle safety authorities who are already investigating the automaker for possible safety defects in its driver-assistance systems." reported CNBC yesterday: "FSD Beta is an unfinished version of Tesla's premium driver-assistance software, FSD, which the company sells in the U.S. for $10,000 upfront, or $199 a month. The company previously made FSD Beta available to about 2,000 people, a mix of mostly employees and some customers, who test it out on public roads even though the software hasn't been debugged. Tesla's systems tabulate a drivers': “Predicted Collision Frequency, Forward Collision Warning per 1,000 Miles, Hard Braking, Aggressive Turning, Unsafe Following Time, and Forced Autopilot Disengagements" If you're a good boy or girl after 7 days, Tesla will review their decision and you may get access. Tesla develops in shorter processes, works closer with the best in the industry and takes more risk," Diess, a known admirer of the electric car pioneer led by Elon Musk, said. Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen, Europe's largest carmaker, aims to overtake Tesla as the world's top seller of electric cars by 2025, a claim that is underscored by an ambitious plan to build six large battery factories in Europe by 2030." In just seven years, the company was able to install more than 1,000 stalls in one city to increase people's commitment to electric vehicles." writes the Tesla fan blog Tesmanian: "Tesla in China achieved another major milestone. @JayinShanghai/Twitter shared the good news: Tesla has installed the 100th Supercharger station in Shanghai. We already know the iX is in production and when we attended IAA Mobility 2021, we saw dozens and dozens of them in and around the venue." says InsideEVs: "BMW offers the iX in xDrive 40 and xDrive 50 guises, with either 240 kW (321 hp) or 385 kW (516 hp) respectively. The first has a 76.6 kWh battery pack (71 kWh usable capacity) and a claimed WLTP range of 425 km (264 miles), with the more powerful version featuring a 111.5 kWh pack (105.2 kWh usable); range is rated at 630 km (391 miles) WLTP. Pricing for the iX in Germany starts at €77,300 for the xDrive 40 model." Read more: https://insideevs.com/news/535383/bmw-ix-starts-deliveries-europe UPDATE: BMW SAYS NO ELECTRIC RANGE CAP "A few days ago, we wrote about how BMW allegedly wanted to put a cap on its electric vehicle ranges. We wrote that based on a report from WhichCar, who had spoken to BMW i4 Project Leader, David Ferrufino about the subject. According to the WhichCar article, Ferrufino claimed that “BMW electric vehicle range to remain capped at 600km” and that the charging infrastructure was more important. However, since then, we've talked to a spokesperson from BMW who tells us that there was never a 600 km range cap. We don't have the details of the original conversation, but allegedly the miscommunication was on BMW's part." writes BMWBlog: "From what we're told, the 600 km range – on WLTP and 300 miles on EPA – was the target number for both the BMW i4 and BMW iX during their development." The BMW Communications Team in Munich: “The BMW Group will not stop to further develop the electric range of their battery-electric vehicle portfolio. The BMW iX and BMW i4 are the first fully-electric models within the BMW portfolio to allow for a range of around 600km in WLTP and every day driving. Thereby they fulfill exactly the target range which had been set for their individual market segments. And the story doesn't end here: The BMW Group will continue pushing the boundaries of all aspects of electric driving. This applies in particular to further increasing ranges and higher charging speeds, depending on the individual model.” Read more: https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/09/25/update-bmw-says-no-electric-range-cap-on-its-future-electric-vehicles/ GERMAN RESEARCHERS CONVERTED A TESLA MODEL Y INTO A HYDROGEN CAR "On Wednesday, German Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek revealed an automotive Frankenstein creation: A Tesla Model Y that had been converted into a hydrogen vehicle that she called a “hyper hybrid." says futurism.com: "The actual “hyper hybrid” Tesla was meant to represent the concepts behind hydrogen fuel more so than to become a street-ready vehicle. The Carbon2Chem initiative, which aims to decarbonize the steel industry, designed the car to demonstrate new ways to save energy and recycle fuel". https://futurism.com/the-byte/converted-tesla-hydrogen-car DAIMLER TAKES A 33% STAKE IN AUTOMOTIVE CELLS COMPANY "Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler has taken a 33% equity stake in French battery manufacturer Automotive Cells Company (ACC) together with automaker Stellantis and French petroleum giant TotalEnergies. Each company will hold an equal 33% stake in ACC. " reports FutrueCar: "As Mercedes Benz ramps up the production of electric vehicles and transitions to becoming an electric-only automaker by the end of the decade, ACC will help the company to scale up development and production of next-generation high-performance battery cells and modules. ACC was founded in 2020 and aims to become the European leader of electric vehicle batteries. The investments from Dailmer, Stellantis and TotalEnergies bring together the additional expertise of three major companies, with highly complementary skills.  Daimler said in July that more than 90% of future Mercedes-Benz electric models will be built with a common battery platform with standardized interfaces. We talk to our friend Henry—a lawyer and expert in transformative technologies—about the weird and wonderful phenomenon of NFTs and digital art. If you've ever wanted to impress your friends with your incredible knowledge of words like "blockchain", "minting", "Proof of Stake", "fungible", this is the podcast for you! We talk about: what NFTs are, how to make them, whether they're a fad or here to stay, the environmental impact, criminal uses, valuing digital art. Amie is there the whole way to ask the "silly questions" and keep the conversation grounded. We try to get to grips with this new technology and have an honest conversation about what it means for artists. Our hope is that, by the end of the conversation, NFTs will lose their intimidation factor. A bit more about Henry: He Worked as a lawyer at King & Wood Mallesons, focusing predominantly in the areas of FinTech, blockchain, and big data. Recently finished his Masters in Political Philosophy at LSE where he focused on the political and ethical challenges of transformative technologies. Is soon to start a job with the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance working on a regulatory innovation project. And, perhaps best of all, he runs his own legal shop called 'Nomadiq Legal' helping Australian creatives and entrepreneurs launch startups and side hustles. You can look into his services here.
