A belated Happy New Year to our loyal LAL listeners! We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to each of you for the momentum our humble undertaking now enjoys. We look forward to a productive and content-rich 2022. In that spirit, we begin the year with an in-house episode. Norm and Mike's conversation is anchored by a recent legal development in Mike's neck of the woods, Greensboro, North Carolina. As the title suggests, the legal development embodies a microcosmic view of what appears to be a larger trend the country over.  Norm opens by floating his theory of what we can expect to see from state and federal leadership as the spell of the virus continues to break across the country. In short, Norm expects that climate change will ascend the mantle of the public health crisis du jour, mimicking the same strategy and playbook that has stifled exercise of civil liberties over the past two years.  Mike offers his observations on the matter, while inadvertently reminding Norm of just how long in the tooth he is.  The two transition to the topic at hand and Mike lays forth Greensboro City Council's recent ratification of a new standard operating procedure, called the "Safety Review Board", as an ominous legal development.  If you're still curious as to whether Mike and Norm are opening a bar and restaurant together, we don't really know. The title of this episode, however, references Greensboro's implementation of an auxiliary body of appointed board members who are now charged with imposing "safety" procedures on Greensboro's bars and restaurants.  The supposed reason for this so-called Safety Review Board? Greensboro's historic levels of violent crime are obviously and directly attributable to its hospitality community because those businesses sell and serve alcohol. We say "obviously" because, as you'll hear, the City Council has not bothered to provide any findings of fact to establish any nexus between the two.  Still, left unabated, the establishment of this Safety Review Board lays the groundwork for troubling days ahead for an industry that has barely weathered the storm of COVID-era shutdowns and restrictions, and a city still not at one with itself behind economic contraction, the summer riots of 2020, and the political malpractice attendant to upcoming midterm elections.  Listen. How might the protests shake up the economy, trade and business in the Central Asian nation? Ed Butler speaks to Diana Kudaibergenova, a sociology professor at Cambridge University and herself Kazakh, about what motivated the protests, and whether the apparent ouster of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev plus a host of new economic reforms will be enough to appease the protesters. But what does all this mean for foreign business interests in the country? Kate Mallinson of Chatham House says many Western oil executives will be having sleepless nights, while Russia's President Vladimir Putin may require an economic dividend for his military help in stabilising the situation. And what of Kazakhstan's other giant neighbour, China? Raffaello Pantucci of the Royal United Services Institute says the upheaval has come at a time when many Kazakhs were questioning the seeming one-sidedness of their increasingly close economic ties. My guest today is my friend Andreas Kohl, Chief Business Development Officer of Mintlayer. Mintlayer is a Bitcoin sidechain dedicated to asset tokenization - like stablecoins and stock tokens - and DEX transactions, including direct atomic swap and lightning swaps between BTC and any token issued on the Mintlayer sidechain. MLT is the governance utility token that is used for: * Running blocksigner nodes on the network via staking MLT. * Fees for processing transactions, creating tokenized assets, ACL rules and smart contracts. The Mintlayer Consensus system is called DSA, a sort of refined Proof of Stake system secured by the Bitcoin Proof of Work, thanks to the mechanism of anchoring and checkpoints on the Bitcoin mainchain. Andreas is a Bitcoin maximalist, libertarian, and futurist. He is passionate about decentralization, self-determination, and maximizing human potential. Prior to joining the Bitcoin space he worked extensively within the libertarian community working for various major libertarian organizations and institutions. Our conversation centers around Bitcoin, Mintlayer, Reimagining DeFi on Bitcoin, Layer-2s and Sidechains, Bitcoin's impact on society, and much more. Andreas does an excellent job at explaining the design trade-offs when optimizing for various engineering parameters. This naturally leads to our conversation about the unique approach Mintlayer is taking to optimize for decentralization and atomic interoperability with Bitcoin. Andreas blew me away with his knowledge about the technical challenges of building blockchains. The next part of the conversation centers around bringing DeFi to Bitcoin. Andreas explains how Mintlayer utilizes the Lightning Network to truly scale Bitcoin to be the hub for DeFi. Another very interesting conversation was how Mintlayer is gas token agnostic. We discuss the possibilities of creating ecosystems on top of Mintlayer that are able to use their own tokens to process and validate transactions without the need for any other outside token. A very important conversation topic was how DeFi can be reimagined with Bitcoin at the center. Our final conversation topic was to discuss Bitcoin's 13th anniversary and how the space has changed but more importantly how Bitcoin has changed society in the last 13 years. Please enjoy my conversation with my friend Andreas Kohl. -- This podcast is powered by Blockworks. Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin returns to the podcast to discuss his recent article Endgame, as well as the massive year we observed in 2021. From the future of Ethereum to the rise of alternative Layer 1 platforms, it only makes sense to kick off 2022 by exploring how far we've come and figuring out where we're headed. How far are we along on Ethereum's roadmap? What challenges lie ahead? In a recent tweet, Vitalik posted a graphic of the updated progress of the Ethereum roadmap, and there are five throughlines that are progressing in parallel: • The Merge • The Surge • The Verge • The Purge • The Splurge We dive into what each of these means, as well as discuss what Ethereum will look like as these milestones are met. Holding this up against conversations of maximalism and alternative L1s, now is the time to start asking the big questions. ✨ WATCH THE DEBRIEF ✨ https://youtu.be/v__0GOC-XYE  ------

Andrei Illarionov is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Security Policy in Washington. From 2000 to 2005 he was the chief economic adviser of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the president's personal representative in the G-8. Dr. Illarionov was the driving force behind the adoption of a 13% flat income tax, the Russia's government's creation of a Stabilization Fund for windfall oil revenues, reduction in the size of government and the early repayment of Russia's foreign debt. At the end of 2005, he resigned from his post as a Presidential Advisor for what he said were three main reasons: the transformation of Russia into a politically non-free country, the capture of the Russian state by the corporation of secret police officers (“siloviki”), and horrific corruption within the Russian leadership. Earlier, in 1992, Dr. Illarionov had served as an Economic Advisor to Russia's Acting Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar. And from 1993 to 94 he was Chief Economic Advisor to Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin.

My guest today is my friend Brian Norton, the Chief Operations Officer of MEW (MyEtherWallet). MyEtherWallet (MEW) is an open-source, client-side interface that allows users to interact directly with the Ethereum blockchain, without having to join a centralized exchange. One of the first such interfaces of its kind, MEW allows users to create and unlock wallets, interact with popular hardware wallets such as Trezor and Ledger, send transactions, interact with contracts, swap tokens, and interact with dApps. Things you can do with MEW: create your own unique Ethereum wallet, send and receive ETH and tokens, explore theirDApp store where users can earn on their deposits with Aave, open a vault with MakerDAO, or register and manage your ENS domains and deploy and interact with smart contracts. Brian has a background in operations, digital content development, and brand strategy. He specializes in keeping organizations on deadline and in touch with their target audiences. He has built years of start-up operational management experience in industries across the tech space, including edu-tech, industrial automation, and now blockchain. Brian's work at MEW is driven by the idea that blockchain technologies, designed for everyday life, will change the way we live for the better in ways we can not yet imagine. The major topics in our conversation include: the growth and evolution of Ethereum and the ETH community, Proof of Stake and Layer 2 scaling solutions, Ethereum as the Cultural Asset Layer, the future is multichain, and much more. We begin our conversation by discussing the evolution and growth of Ethereum and ETH community. Brian does an excellent explaining how Ethereum's finding product market fit and how Ethereum fits within the broader crypto landscape. He also discusses how the ETH community is growing at an exponential rate. Our conversation transitions to scaling the Ethereum network and the role of Layer 2s. Brian breaks down how Layer 2 and Proof of Stake will help scale the Ethereum network to enable global adoption. Brian discusses how projects like Polygon are providing users with a fast and cheap way of transacting but sacrificing some security and decentralization to lower the transaction costs. The next topic we discussed is the history and growth of MyEtherWallet and their tireless support for Ethereum since the inception of the project. We also discuss how Ethereum is becoming the base layer for Cultural Assets. Brain shares how he predicted the rise of NFTs and the proliferation of Culture and Art on Ethereum. We discuss how ETH is beginning to become ubiquitous within the sectors of society that are concerned with Culture and the Arts and what that means for the future of the Creator Economy. A major talking point of our conversation were the 5 spokes of life and how Web3 enables humans to scale these spokes much easier. We discuss the importance of Family, Finance, Friends, Faith, Fitness. One of our final conversation topics was the reality we are headed to a multichain world and what is Ethereum's role within the broader blockchain ecosystem. Brain firmly believes ETH will be the settlement-layer for smart contract blockchains that enables the proliferation of Finance to Culture on the Blockchain. Please enjoy my conversation with Brian Norton, the Chief Operations Officer of MEW. --- ParaSwap: If you want to make a swap at the best price across the DeFi market, check out https://untoldstories.link/paraswap. "If Bitcoin were built on a proof-of-stake model, where the more coins you have the more votes you have on how the network functions, the large exchanges and custodians could have used the millions of coins they held on behalf of clients to vote in their own favor. This is similar to how Vanguard and BlackRock hold trillions of dollars of indexed equity assets for their users and maintain the voting rights on those assets." - Lyn Alden Man have we got a great one today! “When you make this change that we just talked about going from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake you break a lot of the really cool stuff…I don't think any of us appreciated the complexity and how much fixing we'd have to do after breaking Nakamoto consensus.”— Lane RettigLocation: New YorkDate: Sunday 5th DecemberProject: EthereumRole: Core DeveloperThe Proof of Work (PoW) consensus protocol is under relentless attack. Earlier this month The House of Representatives held a hearing on digital assets. Rashida Tlaib dismissively questioned PoW, quoting erroneous Bitcoin transaction energy cost data. In response Stellar's CEO Denelle Dixon implicitly agreed PoW was energy intensive, and that “we all need to focus on minimizing the energy consumption as much as possible”.The next day Ripple's co-founder Chairman Chris Larsen published a medium article that stated “Bitcoin's code needs to be changed to a low energy consensus algorithm like those used by nearly all other major crypto protocols.” Last week CNBC interviewed the CEOs of 2 wealth management firms. One stated the following:“Bitcoin operates on PoW: that's the older technology, it's slower, it's really a drain on energy. Proof of Stake (PoS) is the newer system, it's where I'd want my money going. It's less energy intensive. It's faster. It's more secure."In potentially the biggest change to any blockchain ever implemented, Ethereum is planning to move from PoW to PoS. PoS has been argued by its proponents (most notably Vitalik Buterin) to not only be less energy intensive than PoW, but to also provide significantly much cheaper security, and greater decentralization. But, the arguments dismissing PoW and recommending PoS are fundamentally flawed. In this interview, I talk to the former Ethereum Core Developer Lane Rettig, who now works as a core developer for Spacemesh. We discuss the history and logic behind PoW, the drivers for developing new consensus protocols, how PoS is set to work within Ethereum, and the significant flaws and risks this proposed change entails. Covering topics like the meteoric rise of NFTs, the BTC Flippening, and Ethereum Maximalism, there remains much to be incredibly excited about as we close out a historic 2021. While macro conditions remain uncertain, the conditions of the crypto markets and ecosystems are perhaps surprisingly more digestible. With the Proof-of-Stake merge on the way and the modular blockchain thesis taking shape, the inevitable conclusion is that ETH is destined to go up. What's 2022 going to look like?
