Leanne McCallum Desselle joins Dr. Sandie Morgan as they explore what happens when a hurricane knocks out the very systems built to catch trafficking — from a child abuse hotline down for three weeks after Hurricane Ida to the disaster recovery jobs where exploitation quietly takes hold.Chapters(00:00) - Introduction (01:39) - An International Lens on a Uniquely American Blind Spot (04:17) - The Signal International Case After Katrina (07:36) - From the Ground in Louisiana to a Researcher's Path (11:13) - Why Research Doesn't Reach the People Who Need It (14:50) - Who Disasters Make Vulnerable to Trafficking (20:18) - Responding in the First Days — and How to Prepare Before the Storm (25:22) - Creative Partnerships That Kept Services Running (28:27) - Turning Research Into Policy and Practice (34:32) - Advice for Researchers Entering This Space About Leanne McCallum DesselleLeanne McCallum Desselle is a Research Analyst and Training & Technical Assistance Provider at RTI International, a role she has held since August 2022. She spent nearly a decade in frontline anti-trafficking work in Louisiana, coordinating the Greater New Orleans Human Trafficking Task Force for more than three years and later managing a statewide child and youth trafficking initiative for the Louisiana Alliance of Children's Advocacy Centers. In 2018 she was appointed Chair of the Labor Trafficking Committee for the Louisiana Governor's Human Trafficking Prevention Commission and Advisory Board. At RTI, she leads technical assistance for a U.S. Office for Victims of Crime initiative on child and youth trafficking outcomes and contributes to research on labor trafficking prosecutions and the effects of disasters on trafficking vulnerability. She holds a Master of Arts in International Studies, concentrating in Human Rights and Human Trafficking, from the University of Denver's Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Linfield University.Key Points• Hurricane Katrina's Signal International case, in which hundreds of Indian guest workers were defrauded and trafficked into labor repairing Gulf oil rigs, became one of the largest labor trafficking settlements at the time and helped drive Louisiana's first designated federal anti-trafficking funding in 2007-2008.• Housing instability is one of the biggest drivers of post-disaster trafficking risk — when people lose their community, school, and church, they become far more vulnerable to someone who says, "Don't worry, I'll take care of everything. I'll get you a job."• Disasters disproportionately hit communities already made vulnerable by redlining, the historical practice of confining people of color and poor families to lower-lying land that's more exposed to flooding and severe weather.• In interviews with 46 disaster and trafficking responders, foreign national day laborers doing disaster recovery work and isolated children in disrupted households emerged as two of the populations most vulnerable to exploitation after a storm.• After Hurricane Ida, Louisiana's child abuse hotline — the mandated channel for reporting child trafficking — was down for at least three weeks, leaving responders with no way to report what they saw.• Preparation has to happen before a disaster, not during one: without a plan already tested and rehearsed, coordinating a trafficking response becomes nearly impossible once phones, power, and staff are all unreachable at once.• Louisiana responders found creative workarounds under pressure, from standing up a mobile forensic interview unit in a neighboring parish within 24 hours to running child trafficking response operations out of a partner's building after their own offices were destroyed.• Leanne and her RTI colleagues sent their findings directly to the Louisiana Human Trafficking Prevention Commission and Advisory Board, which is now recommending changes to state labor procurement practices to help prevent forced labor.Resources• RTI International• Human Trafficking in the Wake of Natural Disasters (RTI research project page)• Human Trafficking in the Wake of Natural Disasters: A Case Study of Preparedness and Response in Louisiana (Violence and Victims, 2026)• The Intersection of Human Trafficking and Natural Disasters: A Scoping Review (Trauma, Violence, & Abuse, 2024)• Advancing the Field: Human Trafficking and Natural Disasters — Recommendations for the Louisiana Human Trafficking Prevention Commission and Advisory Board• Labor Trafficking in Construction During the Recovery and Reconstruction from a Natural Disaster (OPRE Report, Barrick & Pfeffer)• Louisiana Human Trafficking Prevention Commission and Advisory Board• David, et al. v. Madlik Podcast – Torah Thoughts on Judaism From a Post-Orthodox Jew
We usually associate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with judgment and fear, but a closer look at the texts reveals a completely different, shocking command: rejoice. Wake up. Shake off the dust. Put on your finest clothes—and rejoice! The haftarah for Parshat Shoftim delivers an urgent wake-up call to a defeated and demoralized people: Hit'oreri, hit'oreri—Awaken, awaken! Uri, uri—Wake up, wake up! Isaiah calls upon Zion to rise from the dust, cast off the identity of a captive, dress herself in garments of splendor, and reclaim her place as God's beloved. Key Takeaways Consolation demands action - Isaiah does not tell Zion simply to feel better. He commands her to awaken, shake off the dust, change her clothes, and reclaim her identity. Lecha Dodi turns prophecy into practice - Every Friday night, Isaiah's distant promise of redemption becomes a present experience: we welcome the Sabbath bride with "exceedingly great joy" and rehearse the possibility of beginning again. The High Holidays are not only about fear - Nehemiah commands the people to rejoice on Rosh Hashanah, while the Mishnah calls Yom Kippur one of Israel's most joyous days. God's kingship brings awe—but also confidence, consolation, and radical delight. Living in God's kingdom is an adventure with extraordinary purpose – to reveal the power of love in the midst of sorrow and the poverty of shame. Be awake for it. Stephen Macedo and Frances Lee are both professors of politics at Princeton. Together they wrote "In Covid's Wake: How Our Politics Failed Us" (Princeton University Press), named one of the best books of 2025 by The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, and The Economist, and featured on The New York Times' "The Daily" and PBS NewsHour. The book asks a question few want to spend time with: how did we actually handle the pandemic — and what would we do differently next time? We invited Stephen and Frances on Crazy Good Turns not to relitigate COVID or assign blame, but to look back honestly so that when the next crisis comes, we do a little better. Macedo is a political theorist who has written widely on constitutional law, ethics, and public policy; Lee is a leading scholar of Congress and political polarization. In this episode, we discuss: [04:53] The Book Almost No One Asked For: Why Lee wasn't sure anyone would want to read In Covid's Wake — and why she felt it needed to exist anyway. [07:34] Why We Look Away (This Wasn't The First Time): On the strange quiet that settled after the pandemic — and the echo of 1918, when the country did much the same thing following the Spanish flu. [14:47] No Commission, No Reckoning: We studied 9/11 and the Challenger. We never launched that kind of honest look back at COVID — and Lee explores why. [17:23] Who Suffered the Most: How a response framed as protecting the vulnerable, they argue, so often landed hardest on essential workers, small businesses, and our kids. [26:57] The Case for a "Team B" in Every Crisis: Macedo on what he calls an "effortful pause" — room for dissent, and a wider table than just the experts who already agree. [38:06] Reasons for Hope: Why Macedo thinks we will do better next time, and why he's bullish on students who were in junior high in 2020. More than a year ago, Melody put a placeholder in our shared podcast planning document: SOMETHING SMART ABOUT AI. We were sick, bored, or frustrated with the way so many podcasts were talking about it — usually because it involved dudes talking with other dudes and universalizing proclamations about whether artificial intelligence was going to usher in an age of utopia (doubtful) or kill us all (doubtful but more probable). We wanted someone willing to get into the gray areas of LLM and chatbot use in particular — someone with real experience with what they can do and real ambivalence about what they do to us. That person is Vauhini Vara, author of Searches: Selfhood in the Digital Age, and one of my absolute favorite thinkers working and writing today. In this episode, we talk about how LLMs short circuit the creative process, how they're changing the way students learn to think and discern, the specious argument that AI "democratizes creativity," really bad AI art, and why it's so hard to talk about AI usage just generally. I loved this conversation and keep coming back to the ideas, challenges, hopes, and frustrations we discussed — I think you will too. Prime Minister Andy Burnham tells Wake Up to Money that the increase to national insurance has "added pressure" to businesses, and tells Felicity Hannah his announcements aimed at tackling the cost of living are not enough on their own and hinted at further support.Elsewhere, we speak to Amy Clayton of Sollunae, who sell glasses for people to watch the solar eclipse.
1. Why Life Planning Should Come Before Financial Planning Why you need to understand the life you want to create before deciding how your money should support it. Using a lifetime cash flow plan to identify future liabilities and the assets needed to fund them. 2. Looking Beyond Investments to Understand Total Wealth Why traditional financial planning can focus too heavily on regulated investments rather than the full picture of someone's wealth. Looking at property, pensions, savings, investments and future earnings as part of a wider wealth plan. 3. The Overlooked Value of Human Capital Understanding human capital as the skills, property, intellectual property, networks and other assets that can generate earnings. How leveraging human capital can create entrepreneurial opportunities, income and financial capital over time. 4. Taking Back Control Through Financial Agency What Steve means by financial agency and why people should have greater ownership of their financial decisions. How proportional planning can provide expert support during complexity, stress or major life changes without creating permanent dependency. 5. How AI Could Change Financial Planning Why AI is reducing the information gap between financial institutions and consumers. How individuals can use AI as a co-pilot to improve their financial capability and productivity while retaining human judgement. 6. Understanding Fees and Making Better Financial Decisions Why consumers should take a closer look at the charges attached to pensions, investments and financial products. How AI-powered tools could help people identify hidden terms, charges and potential red flags so they can make more informed decisions. 7. The Future of Financial Advice and Wealth Transfer How changing consumer expectations, technology and the Great Wealth Transfer could reshape the traditional financial advice model. Why greater financial capability, combined with professional support when genuinely needed, could give future generations more control over their wealth. Some houses are easy to forget. Others stay with you long after you've moved away. When one family rented an older home in western North Carolina, nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first. There were no terrifying encounters or constant paranormal activity—just an uneasy feeling that seemed to follow them from room to room. Over time, different members of the family began noticing little things that were easy enough to brush off on their own. It wasn't until one quiet weekend night that everything became much harder to ignore. After waking to the unmistakable feeling that someone was standing beside the bed, one teenager heard a whispered voice deliver two simple words. Decades later, the memory is still as vivid as ever, and it's the one experience from that house that has never faded.#RealGhostStories #GhostStories #HauntedHouse #Paranormal #WhisperInTheDark #TrueGhostStory #Supernatural #HauntedHome #GhostEncounter #Unexplained #ParanormalActivityLove real ghost stories? If your container can only hold 60 watts of energy, that is all you are getting. No strategy, no opportunity, no amount of hustle changes that. What changes it is expanding the vessel itself. David Ghiyam is a Kabbalah teacher and spiritual coach who has spent 25 years working with people at the intersection of consciousness, abundance, and transformation. This is one of the most expansive conversations Heal Thy Self has ever had. It moves from money ceilings and competing belief systems to anxiety as a message from your highest destiny, to darkness as excess light, to the energetic pipes of mother and father that govern healing and abundance. It goes places most podcasts never go and it earns every minute of it. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why the ceiling you keep hitting with money, love, or opportunity has nothing to do with the outside world, and why fixing your circumstances without expanding your spiritual vessel is fighting a shadow instead of the seed • What competing belief systems are and how a hidden belief you are completely unaware of can quietly sabotage every goal your conscious mind is working toward • Why anxiety is not a problem to solve but a signal that your higher destiny is trying to come in and cannot, and what it actually takes to open the channel This one will stay with you.
