On episode 176 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, Jon Barbas discovers Atlanta's underground metal scene. I've been covering shows in Atlanta for a few years now, but always at big venues. I went to Atlanta to see Tomb Mold and Horrendous. It took place in a small bar called Boggs Social. I didn't know about this scene but I immediately felt at home. This is where my kind of people go. Here I report what I saw complete with pictures of the event. Max Klebanoff, the Canadian musician behind the noise project DEATH KNEEL and drummer for death metal band TOMB MOLD, is an artist deeply dedicated to his craft and developing his own language within the extreme genres he operates in. His work as DEATH KNEEL has always set itself apart with its progressive sonics and introspective aura, but with his 2023 CD "Dawn Simulation" on Chondritic Sound, he began to breach more abstract and harsh territory, which he has masterfully expanded upon over the past several short-length tapes, released on his own imprint "Life Of Sensation." In our long chat, Max opens up about what drives his passion and work ethic, how he does what he does, and the conclusions of a life dedicated to extreme music. Metalheads!! Jazz and eldritch horrors? It must be a Gabe pick.

If you've been following along, The Enduring Spirit (20 Buck Spin) by Tomb Mold is an all encompassing hit for the Nine Circles crew and we pretty much blew our load talking about it on this interview right here. But, we're back in crowd format to blow the last bit of load we have left on it since it truly is that good of a death metal album. You know how these things work: the team picks an album from the month as a favorite then discuss then go over everything else that struck a chord then go over life and whatnot. Fun was had by all as the convo went literally all over the place so grab a comfy seat, your preferred beverage, and enjoy. 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
2017 saw the debut full length release, Primordial Malignity, of Ontario's Tomb Mold and without knowing it changed death metal forever. It basically made everyone take notice and up their games. Now, with their fourth full length The Enduring Spirit (20 Buck Spin), they do the same thing yet again. It's challenging and fluid yet melodious, brutal and unforgiving yet accessible, wildly technical yet super catchy without any sort of cliches. It's been a homerun here at Nine Circles pretty much across the board so we're extremely excited that Buke got the chance to chat it up with guitarist Payson Power and drummer / vocalist Max Klebanoff to shed some light on the band, new album, some backstory, and so much more. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy. Huge thanks to Payson and Max for their time!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram.

Welcome back metal heads to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. It's Xander back with a brand new album review. Today, we will be looking at The Enduring Spirit by Canadian death metallers Tomb Mold. I was first introduced to Tomb Mold a few years ago when someone on my Facebook told me to check out their 2018 album Manor of Infinite Forms. I remember enjoying their brand of death metal but at the same time, I never became a huge fan. This new album however might change that for me. I have a friend in the UK who told me the other day that Tomb Mold was releasing a new album so I decided to give it a listen. Needless to say, this band has definitely improved upon their sound. There's obviously a lot more technical and groovy parts in the riffs instead of the dirty and grimey sound I'm used to hearing from these guys. This time around, things seem to be a lot more polished with even some calm moments. A perfect example of this would be at the beginning of the track titled "Will of Whispers''. In fact it reminded me a lot of Rivers Of Nihil's Where Owls Know My Name just a little but then again, there were many other times throughout this record where I got Hooded Menace vibes; so much so that I even went back and listened to one of my favorite 2021 albums The Tritonus Bell. Tomb Mold is a band that has evolved since the previous album which was released right before COVID. This means that the band most likely had a lot of time during lockdown to really brainstorm and write a perfect new album that stands out among the rest in the discography. In my opinion I think this is the best material they have ever created. Derek Vella and Payson Power are both absolute riff machines and provide a gorgeous guitar solo on the track "Fate's Tangled Thread" and of course Kevin Sia rips on the bass. I love how the bass cuts through the music like a knife through warm butter and to make it even more impressive is that the guy is only rocking a 4 string! Usually death metal bands with the techier sound need at least a 5 or 6 string. I mean hell, the band Obscura has a bassist who shreds on an 8 string fretless bass. As I was watching the making of this album I saw that Kevin's 4 string is also fretless. That's awesome! Especially hearing the bassline in "Servants of Possibility". I'm going to be doing a review for the new Autopsy album next month and it got me thinking about how rare it is for the vocalist of a band to also be the drummer. It takes a certain set of skills to be able to pull of those slow cavernous growls while also blasting away at the drums and Max Klebanoff can do exactly that! On the album title closing track which has the full name "The Enduring Spirit of Calamity", the guitar riffs remind me a lot of the middle era of a band like Decrepit Birth. As a fan of that particular style of tech death I can appreciate that. Now the metal-archives doesn't label them as tech death but I feel like it's the direction that this band is going and I can't wait to see what they put out in the future. This album was a breath of fresh air and I can see myself listening to this one a few more times before the end of the year. I have nothing but positive things to say about this one. Let's give it a nice little 8.5 out of 10. It's amazing but at the same time not really my go-to genre yet it deserves some much needed attention and support. You can support Tomb Mold's music by buying their music from either their Bandcamp page or from their record label website 20buckspin.com. Tomb Mold is also available on all streaming platforms.

Like a lot of other metal fans I was blown away by the Dream Unending debut album, Tide Turns Eternal. It was my 2021 Doom album of the year. So when I got the opportunity to chat with Derrick Vella, the guitarist for Dream Unending and Tomb Mold, I was truly excited. Even with that excitement I was surprised by how positive and charismatic he was during the conversation. We talked about their ambitious new album Song of Salvation and of course some philosophy and I think his message is genuine and inspiring. Tomb Mold just released a new demo and it got me on a kick of listening to metal bands that are soulsborne themed. It turns out there's quite a lot of them, probably more than any other video game. Why is that? What is it about Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and/or Elden Ring that resonates with metal heads? I go over the similarities between metal music and the games and I talk about some of the great bands that make this music.Heavy Metal Philosophy Contact;https://www.spreaker.com/show/heavy-metal-philosophyHeavyMetalPhilosophy@gmail.comhttps://mobile.twitter.com/heaviestdoyenhttps://www.facebook.com/HeaviestDoyenhttps://www.instagram.com/heavy_metal_philosophy/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh2KCIU5z_F6DRH05xHsJMA#metal #darksouls #bloodborne #eldenring #tombmold #hath #philosophy

Top story this week has to be the blackout that hit west Manhattan. Coming 42 years to the day after the 1977 blackout from last week's show, this year's power outage was much less dramatic and lasted only a few hours. ConEd CEO John McAvoy described the failure of both the primary and backup protection systems at a power substation at 64th Street and West End Avenue, leading to power outages once the system was interrupted by a subsequent substation at 49th Street. Although the blackout wasn't caused by a spike in electricity usage, the heat is still on in the city, with daily high temps in the 90s. In response, cooling centers have been opened across the city in senior centers, public housing, and public libraries. On July 18th, Mayor de Blasio signed a local state of emergency that calls on city government buildings and all office buildings over 100 feet tall to conserve energy and set their thermostats no lower than 78°. Temperatures are set to rise and humidity will increase, leading to heat indexes over 100° before rain arrives on July 22nd. You can do your part by turning off your air conditioner when leaving your home and using public transportation instead of driving, which will keep the air quality clear during the heat wave. If you'll be opening your windows to get some ventilation, you can install safety devices called vent locks for sash windows or metal clips for sliding windows that make sure windows can't be forced all the way open from the outside. 5 years ago on July 17, 2014 — Eric Garner dies after being put in a chokehold by NYPD officers 12 years ago on July 18, 2007 — A steam pipe explodes near Grand Central, sending debris flying and disrupting Midtown during evening rush hour 1 year ago on July 19, 2018 — A steam pipe explodes near the Flatiron Building, causing a large crater outside 141 Fifth Avenue Be aware of your surroundings during this time of year, as two of city's steam explosions have happened during just this week in history.
