A year after a friendship break up, Declan and Amir find that maybe they haven't changed as much as they thought when Declan shows up to Amir's secret hiding place: a barn on a secluded hill. Despite not wanting to be together, Declan is hurt and Amir can't bear to go home to his dysfunctional mother, so they both have to wait it out. After the initial shock of seeing him, Amir realizes that Declan is seriously hurt: he has a stab wound. He nurses Declan's wound while airing out some of his own. An exploration of the fragility of adolescent friendships, emotional neglect, and simply getting older, the boys help each other survive the night. A Bite of a Better Life follows unruly but independent Issa as she struggles to find stability with her emotionally incompetent and financially struggling parents in rural Oregon. However, Issa's parents are certain they can improve both their own and Issa's lives, and for Issa's 10th birthday they promise a transformative gift to make up for their past deficiencies. The misguidedness of the gift quickly becomes apparent, prompting an exploration of a lack of emotional intimacy through the morbid mishandling of a child. Written and directed by Lu Fine.
