3AW Breakfast  - De-Icing Aeroplanes A rare cold-snap dropped the temperature at Melbourne Airport to below freezing, grounding the 5 a.m. departure of the Emirates A380 service to Dubai. The overnight dew had frozen on the wing surfaces, requiring de-icing. Melbourne International is the only airport approved to use hot water de-icing in the world. Colder airports use ICAO-regulated two-stage de-icing: high-pressure hot water to remove deposits followed-up by the low-pressure application of a glycol mixture which lowers the freezing level of the wing. James Nixon explained the process to 3AW Breakfast's Ross Stevenson & John Burns on the 29th August 2018.

Australian Aviation Security On the 15th June 2017 some ISIS-inspired terrorists tried to bomb an Etihad flight departing from Sydney Airport. Peter Lloyd from ABC Radio asked James for a pilot's view about airborne bombs and Australia's airport security for The World Today.  

Malaysian Airlines Flight 128 Bomb Scare On the 2nd June 2017, just after the A330 that was MH128 took off from Melbourne International Airport, a man tried to enter the flight deck and claimed he had a bomb. ABC Radio Melbourne's Jon Faine asked James Nixon what happened next. [2nd June 2017]

The Other Right When the World's Best Pilots had to start an aircraft at the gate, because of a failed APU, they had to use three ground carts and start the right engine first.  Problem: they started the left. Behind it was one of the ground carts, and potentially, some ground staff.

A380 Flypast Over The Melbourne Cup Melbourne radio 3AW's Ross Stevenson and John Burns interviewed James Nixon before he flew an Emirates A380 over 200,000 people at the 2010 Melbourne Cup.  It celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the running of the horse race, and the 25th anniversary of both James Nixon's and Emirates Airline's first flights.
