In episode 231, Max chats with Hawthorn Head of Football Strategy and Projects Matt Spangher! Matt takes us inside his decision to leave the Western Bulldogs, who's stood out on the track at Hawthorn so far, the standards he's helping set, and what it really takes to build a team capable of competing for a premiership. We also dive into Matt's journey: starting out at West Coast, navigating the highs and lows of being delisted, winning a flag with Hawthorn during their golden era, and transitioning into coaching. He shares the moment Alistair Clarkson told him he was playing in the 2014 Grand Final after a tough prelim - and the key message he took away: enjoy the week, wrap your head around it, and play with confidence. Matt opens up on his coaching philosophy at the Bulldogs, how he develops young talent while maintaining elite standards, and the behind-the-scenes work required to help a team reach its potential. Plus, he talks about his new venture with Daniel Pratt, Pocket Mentor, and the thinking behind it. All this and much more in episode 231 of Sporting Max! www.instagram.com/sportingmax.podcast/ Pocket Mentor https://www.pocket-mentor.com.au/
We continue diving deeper into one of Aussie hoops' fiercest rivalries — Sydney vs Illawarra — picking things up right after the Kings' 2005 three-peat sweep of the Hawks and tracking how the "Freeway Series" evolved through the chaos of Firepower, the Kings' disappearance, the rivalry's rebirth in 2010, and the Hawks' huge 2015/16 rebrand and recruiting spree. Host Dan Boyce breaks down the 2005/06 shootouts (and that bizarre Roland Roberts dunk contest injury), the Hawks' underrated 2006 campaign, and the Kings' near-miss 4-peat that ended at the hands of Chris Anstey and Melbourne, before shifting into the biggest off-court implosion in Sydney hoops history — the Firepower Kings era — and how Glenn Saville's move north became a "kick in the guts" moment for Wollongong fans (including a young Xavier Cooks). Featuring first-hand accounts from Glenn Saville, Brian Goorjian, Tim Conrad and Greg Hubbard, this episode blends rivalry game recaps, locker-room stories, and the behind-the-scenes reality of the NBL's wildest period — from bounced cheques and broken promises, to the Hawks' "three-headed monster" era and the viral beer tipping incident as we approach the modern day rivalry between the two clubs. Topics include: How the rivalry reset in 2005/06 — opening night at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and two more Kings nail-biters (04:25) Roland Roberts' bizarre slam dunk contest injury, the import swap to Sedric Webber, and monster seasons from CJ Bruton and Cortez Groves (05:52) The Kings falling short against Chris Anstey's Tigers in the Grand Final (07:46) Glen Saville joins Sydney (10:26) The Firepower Kings and Sydney's 2008 collapse (17:08) The rivalry returns in 2010 with the "Resurrection" Kings and Gary Ervin's MVP season for the Hawks (33:25) 2015/16: The Hawks become Illawarra again and the Marcus Thornton beer incident goes viral (52:06) 2016/17: Hawks lose Lisch to Sydney and the Kings welcome Andrew Gaze (59:17) 2017/18: NBLxNBA games and the Kings begin to rise (1:08:32) Visit dunk.com.au for your next set of basketball uniforms. She went into the 2025 Championship Finals as the Series leader, knowing that victory would bring her a second world title in just three years and establish herself as an all-time great of British triathlon. What transpired in Wollongong was hard to believe. From the flying form of two wins in two leading to the Grand Final, to facing down an injury she knew was serious enough that her team might even advise her not to race, the story of those torrid four weeks in September and October 2025 is told by one of the toughest in the business.
We blikken terug op de T100 Grand Final in Qatar, maar praten vooral ook over alle wijzigingen die de PTO heeft aangekondigd: de komst van een zogenaamde World Triathlon Tour en de WTCS die T50 wordt. Richelle Hill lit the fuse on the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals Wollongong for the hosts Australia, igniting one of the great Grand Finals with the kind of finish that dreams are made of, hoovering up a seemingly unassailable gap to take the U23 world title in the most dramatic fashion. She then went on a self-imposed social media lockdown ahead of the Mixed Relay, before finally reliving the moment back home in Brisbane, just one hint of the remarkable balance and level-headedness of an athlete coached by her mum, driven to succeed, and with a huge home Olympic Games lurking off on the horizon. Another season, another grand final - it seems to be the formula for the Lions at the moment, as the golden days continue. Following a dominant prelim final win over Carlton, the Lions women are into their fourth straight grand final, looking to make amends for last year's loss and go 2-1 up in what is now a trilogy of North Melbourne/Brisbane deciders. It's about as tough an ask as there is in sports at the moment though, but this Lions group have been setting themselves for it for twelve months now, as they look to make 2025 the perfect year. Also this week:-Storms and spilt tea nearly derail the podcast-The men's draft is done with four new Lions joining the club-Powerhouse week is hereAnd much more!

How does Ben Crowe get elite athletes to the top of their game? What he asks footballers, surfers and tennis players to do seems counter intuitive, and a lot of the work happens off the field. (R)Ben Crowe is a mindset coach who has worked with elite athletes like surfer Steph Gilmore, tennis superstar Ash Barty, and the Richmond Football Club. But Ben's method of coaching seems counter-intuitive.Rather than telling these athletes they're the best, he encourages them to own their flaws, make sense of their life stories off the field, prioritising vulnerability and human connection, so they can take both wins and losses in their stride. Further informationOriginally broadcast in July 2021.Ben Crowe's new book, Where the Light Gets In, will be published by HarperCollins in January 2026.This episode of Conversations was produced by Michelle Ransom Hughes, executive producer was Carmel Rooney. It explores sport, NBA, basketball, football, Bayern, David Beckham, Hawks, Tigers, Magpies, Warriors, Tottenham, Jake Weatherald, Champions League, Wimbledon, Tennis Open, US Open, Australian Open, Arsenal, UCL, sports trading, UEFA, FIFA, mindset coaching, positive, books, writing, origin story, grief, death of a father, josh giddey. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. Billy gets you across all the sporting events you should know about this weekend, then we flash back to our interview with two Japanese Sumo Wrestlers. It's the final Fat's On Fire Quiz for 2025 - can Billy and the team nail all 20 questions? This week on Talking Triathlon we react to the biggest shake-up the T100 has seen yet, as the series announces massive changes to its 2026 format. We discuss what the removal of athlete contracts could mean for the future of professional racing, how splitting the season into four standalone men's and four standalone women's races could impact broadcast numbers, and whether increased per-event prize money will be enough to drive interest and secure top-tier fields. We then move into race coverage, where Hayden Wilde and Kate Waugh delivered commanding wins at the T100 Wollongong. But it was the WTCS racing that stole the spotlight. In the women's race, both Cassandre Beaugrand and Beth Potter struggled and saw their world title hopes fade, while Lisa Tertsch produced an incredible performance to win on the day and secure the world championship. In the men's race, Matt Hauser capped off a perfect season, becoming World Champion and delivering Australia's first WTCS world title since 2005. We finish the episode by looking ahead to the 70.3 World Championship start lists and the athletes who could shape the world title battle.
