Alone in a new city, is it inviting danger?Visiting a new destination is exciting for cabin crew, we can often grow tired of flying to the same cities over and over again. And whilst those cities can provide a familiarity that is comforting, it feels like an adventure when you get to experience somewhere new. But sometimes we take the air of familiarity with us into situation where we should probably be a little more guarded. In today's episode of The Red Eye podcast, we hear the true story of a crew member that flew to Manila and was excited to explore. But he made a few choices that led him to fearing for his life, and dealing with the trauma afterwards. If you like real life stories, turned into a half hour fictional style audiobook, then listen to this latest episode of The Red Eye.Music Credits for Stranger DangerSoaring - The Grey Room _ Golden PalmsPerfect Strangers Things - Ezra LippI Am a Man Who Will Fight for Your Honor - Chris ZabriskieSound Effect by Nusret Albayrak from PixabaySound Effect by Spin Opel from PixabaySound Effect by Universfield from PixabaySound Effect by Send us a text! In March 2012, the FBI surrounded a hurricane-rated steel door in Galveston, Texas. Behind it sat 30 year old Higinio Ochoa, drinking coffee in his boxers, flushing his one-time pad passwords down the toilet before letting federal agents inside. The operation to capture "w0rmer" had finally terminated. The process had initialized years earlier in childhood IRC rooms and 2600 chat channels. Ochoa taught himself to hack on dial-up connections, installing FreeBSD from thirty floppy disks at eleven years old. By his twenties, he was running cameras and internet infrastructure for Occupy Wall Street camps. When he witnessed police beating a woman having a seizure during a raid, something switched. The technical skills pivoted toward purpose.Cabin Crew launched with surgical precision. Ochoa mass-scanned police systems for SQL injections and admin pages, often not knowing which department he'd compromised until crafting the press release. He signed every hack, tagged every defacement, live-tweeted FBI taunts. His girlfriend posed in a bikini outside the Alabama Department of Public Safety holding signs that read "PwN3D by w0rmer" with GPS coordinates embedded in the photo metadata.Today he consults for governments and holds battlefield accommodations from Ukraine. The smooth hands that once broke into Secret Service-designed systems now defend critical infrastructure at levels where people could die if information leaks.TIMSTAMPS00:00 The Early Days of Hacking04:22 From Hobbyist to Activist08:30 The Shift to Purposeful Hacking13:16 The Rise of Cabin Crew17:58 The Psychology of Hacking and Branding21:11 The Origins of Wormer: A Hacker's Journey25:10 The FBI's Approach: How They Caught Me27:50 The Day of Reckoning: My Arrest Experience32:44 Life in the System: Mental Struggles and Adaptations36:18 Navigating Post-Prison Life: Challenges and Restrictions44:40 Navigating Life Post-Incarceration47:27 The Struggles of Redemption51:19 Finding Opportunities in a Stigmatized Field55:23 The Evolution of a Hacker's Journey58:46 Contributions to Information Security01:01:19 Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Hackers01:05:42 The Dream of a Cybersecurity Bar[Higinio “w0rmer” Ochoa – LinkedIn] - https://www.linkedin.com/in/x0hig Professional profile of Higinio Ochoa, a former Anonymous-affiliated hacktivist turned cybersecurity consultant, where he shares insights on security, research, and his work in the industry.[DEF CON Hacker Conference] - https://defcon.org/ One of the world's largest and most influential cybersecurity and hacker conferences, referenced in the episode as a key part of early hacker culture and later professional engagement.[Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)] - https://www.cisa.gov/ A U.S. government agency focused on cybersecurity and infrastructure protection, mentioned in relation to responsible disclosure and ethical hacking initiatives.[Cloudflare] - https://www.cloudflare.com/ A global web infrastructure and cybersecurity company where the guest briefly worked after prison, playing a role in his transition into legitimate security work.[The Pirate Bay] - https://thepiratebay.org/ A well-known file-sharing platform referenced in the discussion about monitored internet usage and security research environments post-release.
Have you ever had to deal with something you're absolutely not trained for? When you're 38,000ft in the air, the cabin crew member is the one person everyone turns to to deal with an issue. Most of the time we're trained for it! Fire in the cabin? We trained for that! Violent passenger? We trained for that! Medical emergency? We trained for that! Mental health emergency? Oh boy... not really trained for that!People from all walks of life board that plane, so once in a while the crew are expected to deal with a situation that they're not fully trained for. But as they are usually the type of person who just wants to help, no matter what, they will jump on in and hope they do the right thing. In today's episode of The Red Eye podcast, we tell the stories of the true events that happened to our host and producer, Ally. Who happened to be the person left to deal with 2 separate mental health crises, and wasn't the type of person who would turn her back just because they aren't completely sure what to do.Send us a text! When European airspace shut down in April 2010, the aviation industry largely just accepted it because standard procedures told us that is what happens when a volcano erupts and spits ash into the air. Planes can't fly through ash. Of course! But, like most Standard Operating Procedures in the airline industry, there was an incident that occured that showed us why we need that procedure in place.Well, back in 1982, British Airways Flight 9 from Kuala Lumpur to Perth got caught out when the Mount Galunggung volcano in Indonesia erupted, spewing ash into the air. But no one had experienced the effects of volcanic ash in jet engines - and we learnt pretty swiftly that it was not good. All four engines stopped, effectively turning the Boeing 747 into a glider. Thankfully, the pilots and engineers skills, training and persistence in the face of danger meant that once the aircraft had descended to 12,000ft they were able to restart the engines and land with 3 working ones. After a few days of investgation it was determined that the the tips of the turbine blades had been ground away by the volcanic ash, that had clogged the engines at 37,000ft and had only restarted when enough of the molten ash solidified and broke off at the lower level. In today's episode of The Red Eye podcast, we tell this story from the point of view of the pilots, crew and passengers, in this 30 minute audiobook style story, based on the true events of the Original Ash Cloud incident.Music Credits for The Original Ash CloudYacoby – SchwartzyI Am a Man Who Will Fight for Your Honor - Chris Zabriskie Sound Effect by Derrick McKinnon from PixabaySound Effects by Send us a text! Galley FM is where we hear all the juiciest gossip as Cabin Crew, it's usually listened to at 4am when we're sat in our jumpseats trying to stay awake on the red eye with coffee and biscuits. Because you can guarantee that if something scandalous has happened on a flight or on a trip - then that story will make it's way around the world faster than the plane itself! On today's episode, we hear Susan's blog entry for April. Where she heard a huge amount of fabulous gossip about some naughty pilots but unfortunately her Mum was there when she heard it. (although she didn't seem to mind to be fair!) But as it's Valentine's week we thought we'd share with you the true story of how one ex cabin crew member found her dream man on a Caribbean trip. Because whilst a lot of the love life of a flight attendant is lonely nights in hotels and only meeting sleazy business men sat in First Class, there is sometimes the odd good love story out there. And this one involves a long layover in the Caribbean, and a ship full of Royal Navy boys.... So if you like to escape into a 30 minute beach read style audiobook story about love, and the life of a flight attendant - then this is for you!Music Credits for Hello SailorSteel Drum Intro Music by Christoph Scholl from PixabayCaribbean Steel Drum Happiness - Doug MaxwellSound Effects by freesound_community from Pixabay Sound Effect by Soul_Serenity_Sounds from PixabaySound Effect by Otto from Send us a text! Air New Zealand says it hopes to avoid a three-day strike by international cabin crew in February. E tū Union and the Flight Attendants Association have issued strike notices for wide-body crews on 787 and 777 Boeing flights. The airline's Chief People Officer, Nikki Dines, says they've covered a lot of ground in 10 months of weekly meetings with the unions. "There's a lot of things that we've agreed on, the last remaining item is just on pay. That's the one item that we are continuing to work with our cabin crew unions on." Major aviation incidents can floor a crew member. Whether that's an extended stay on your layover, or something as life changing as 9/11. These big events can completely change airline policies and safety regulations, and how flight attendants and pilots work. But some things never change, and that's the cabin crew's ability to make the best of a bad situation, and the call of The Crew Room is usually there to help the crew debrief, let loose and forget the big stuff, even for a short while. In today's episode of The Red Eye, we visit The Crew Room during several different major aviation events. And hear the true story of what really takes the strain on behalf of the crew...Send us a text! Celebrities have to follow the rules like the rest of us, but that doesn't mean that a few of them don't put up a fight! On today's episode, we hear the true story about a celebrity who refused to comply with not just the cabin crew's requests, but the Captain's too! She was determined to prove that she was in charge, and knew aviation safety procedures better than anyone else and it was left to the flight attendants and flight crew to come up with a creative way to get her to sit down, and shut up!Music Credits for The Seatbelt StandoffSleepy West - JHS PedalsWestern Cowboy Duel Music by Tunetank from PixabaySound Effects by freesound_community from Pixabay Sound Design by Ally MurphySend us a text! Would you board a plane knowing you might have a medical emergency on board? Can you imagine being in a situation where you'd risk your own life, or that of your baby, just to make a journey you didn't really need to make? And what about the flight attendants who have to deal with the emotional toll of dealing with medical emergencies? Or your fellow passengers who might miss their own connections or major life events because your life is at risk in the air so plane has to divert before reaching it's final destination? On today's episode, we hear the true story of a woman who stretched the truth about how pregnant she was, and nearly gave birth in the air. In today's episode, we're revisiting a short story from last year - because it aired on Christmas Eve last year and didn't get the listens it deserved! This story is about Ally, who was destined to spend Christmas in Johannesburg with her slightly rubbish boyfriend who was also a flight attendant. She decided to try make the best of the situation and arranged for the crew to visit an orphanage to give the children there gifts. But she ended up with a whole new perspective on life.Being cabin crew around Christmas isn't the best. You're often alone in a hotel room whilst your family celebrate without you. So this episode is a reminder that no matter how you celebrate, every day on this planet is a gift - so make the most of every opportunity! If you like escaping into short stories, audio fiction based on true stories, or are just interested in the lives of those who work in aviation - this is the podcast for you!Send us a text! Holidaymakers travelling with Air New Zealand in the lead-up to Christmas could find themselves caught out by cabin-crew strikes, despite Monday's planned industrial action being called off. E tu National Secretary Rachel Mackintosh spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Air New Zealand cabin crews could walk off the job next month over stalled pay negotiations, threatening summer travel plans. While the union has ruled out any action the week before Christmas, it will be before the end of the year, unless a deal is reached. Mary Argue reports.

It was a crazy time in the height of the Pandemic. Many people in aviation lost their jobs, and thousands of cabin crew and pilots lives were shattered. But there were some who remained to keep the airline afloat, ferrying around cargo, PPE, and the occasional flight with real passengers! But there were strict protocols to follow, and harsh consequences for anyone who broke them. One of the biggest issues in the aviation industry, and amongst flight attendants right now, is the fact that many airlines treat their employees as just a number. And yet they expect them to treat their passengers as VIPs. Air Canada cabin crew recently went on a strike due to poor working conditions, and airlines have been using "covid" as an excuse for reducing rest days and numbers of crew working a flight. Meaning your cabin crew are exhausted and feeling unappreciated. That's not great on a good day, but on a day when an emergency happens and the crew have to deal with a major medical situation, the least you'd expect is to feel supported by the company. In today's story, based on true events and told to us by a crew member, we hear how one flight attendant was abandoned in his hour of need, which led to him wondering whether he could ever fly again.Music Credits for "Are Cabin Crew Just a Number...?"Sad Moment - Music by Oleg Fedak from PixabaySound Effects by freesound_community from Pixabay Sound Design by Ally MurphySend us a text! As cabin crew are required to be able to react quickly in emergency situations on the aircraft, they are always on the lookout for something out of the ordinary. Whether that is a passenger who has had too much alcohol, a passenger acting suspiciously, someone who may be feeling unwell, or even something wrong with the aircraft. Dawn of a New Era Podcast with Entrepreneur Dawn McGruer| Marketing | Motivation | Mindset |
In this episode, I got to sit down with Susie Batista - an incredibly inspiring entrepreneur whose journey has taken her from the skies as an air stewardess to the world of high-end interior design and now full-time property development.Susie shared how she pivoted from a fast-paced airline career to staging homes, trusting her instincts and following the signs along the way. She opened up about juggling family life, building two businesses with her husband, and the role that mindset, mentorship, and a little bit of faith played in their success. What really stuck with me was Susie's reminder that asking for help and sharing your vision can open unexpected doors - sometimes literally leading to six-figure investments. If you've ever wondered how to grow a business with heart, manage high-stakes clients, or sell your company with confidence, Susie's insights are gold. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did. Here are the highlights:Starting a Career in the Airlines (2:29)Transition to Property and Construction (4:01)Moving to Brazil and Returning to the UK (7:07)Building a Support Network and Starting a Business (8:36)Challenges in the Interior Design Business (15:38)Transitioning to Property Development (21:26)Women in Business and Personal Growth (22:35)Advice for Women in Business (25:45)Connect with Susie HEREConnect with Dawn:Instagram @dawnmcgruer @dawnofanewerapodcastFacebook https://www.facebook.com/dawnamcgruerLinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/businessconsort/Web www.dawnmcgruer.comThis podcast is in association with @HerPowerCommunity - The #1 Female Founders Global Community where connections flourish & growth is intentionalhttps://www.patreon.com/c/herpowercommunity This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podkite - https://podkite.com/privacy

One of the skills that Flight Attendants spend the most time training for, is the one you don't see very often! And thank goodness. Cabin Crew are trained in dealing with big emergencies, like plane crashes, where there may be multiple casualties. They're also trained in triage and giving emergency medical care for these big incidents. Here at The Red Eye, we hear more stories of the crew using those life-saving skill off the aircraft instead of on it. And this is one of those stories! When 3 crew, headed for a fun trip in LA, become the first on the scene of a major road traffic accident, their emergency skills training kicks in, and they set about saving lives till the paramedics can take over...Music Credits for The Roadside Rescue CrewDespite The Traffic - Wes HutchinsonGTA Type Beat - DyallaSound Effect by freesound_community from Pixabay Sound Effect by floraphonic from PixabaySound Effect by Stylianos Danezis from Send us a text! Lots of Flight Attendants move on to different careers in the Emergency Services. The skills acquired in cabin crew training are transferable to the ambulance service, fire service and police. But it's tricky giving up that lifestyle of travelling the world and having fun 5,000 miles away with like minded people.Today's story comes from someone who is ex cabin crew, but married to a crew member, so they still get to engage in some layover shenanigans sometimes! But this story nearly led to an arrest and deportation - which might have affected his new career in the police!Music Credits for Hi-Jinx in HavanaSon Montuno - Music by Julius H. from PixabayFestival De Cuba - Doug Maxwell_Jimmy FontanezSound Effect by freesound_community from PixabaySound Effect by Moses Justin from Send us a text! On June 10th 1990. Captain Tim Lancaster took off from Birmingham Airport to Malaga, when he reached 17,000ft, the window blew out and he got sucked out with it.Cabin Crew member Nigel Ogden, along with Chief Steward John Heward and flight attendant Simon Rogers held on to their captain's legs and refused to let go. First Officer Alastair Aitchison expertly landed the plane in Southampton. The crew thought Tim was dead, but miraculously he survived. This is their story.Music Credits for Man in the WindowI Am a Man Who Will Fight for Your Honor by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/honor/Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/Sound Effects by freesound_community from PixabaySound Effect by Darina Evstafeva from Send us a text! Some cabin crew have a reputation, some are good reputations but some are not... There are a few of the "players" out there, straight male flight attendants who are spoiled for choice when it comes to layover lays! But if you're going to experience the life of the philandering flight attendant then you need to be honest, you need to be open and you need to be sexually healthy... Because a broken heart isn't the only health risk here...Music Credits for Mile High Clap Trap2 Hearts - Patrick PatrikiosMas Cafe - Casa RosaSound Effects by freesound_community from PixabaySound Effect by Björn Eichenauer from PixabaySound Effect by Jurij from Send us a text!
