For many people, the night sky is an afterthought, especially if you live in a big city, where all the artificial light drowns out the stars. But the nature writer Craig Childs wants to help us rediscover the dark heavens and consider what they show us about who we are and where we fit in the universe.

Dr. Jamey Jacob is Executive Director of the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education and the Williams Chair in Energy Technology at Oklahoma State University. Under his leadership, OSU launched the Counter-UAS Center of Excellence, now the nation's central hub for coordinated research, development, testing and evaluation of counter-drone systems. Working closely with the Joint Force CUAS University at Fort Sill, the center assesses vendor technologies, establishes performance standards and accelerates next-generation defenses—all while addressing the growing national shortage of highly trained engineers in this mission-critical domain. With unique testing environments and deep alignment with military needs, OSU plays a pivotal role in strengthening national security and maintaining U.S. leadership in UAS innovation. Beyond directing the Center, Dr. Jacob is a Regents Professor of Aerospace Engineering and a nationally recognized leader in emerging aerospace systems, securing nearly $50 million in research funding from federal agencies and industry partners. He has testified before Congress on the critical need for sustained investment in drone research and advanced air mobility, and he leads major initiatives including the EDA-funded LaunchPad and UAS Flight Corridor, NASA's WINDMAP weather program, OSU's work within the Tulsa Hub for Ethical and Trustworthy Autonomy, and the NIST initiative developing certification standards for next-generation aircraft. A native Oklahoman, he holds degrees from the University of Oklahoma and UC Berkeley, and is an FAA Part 107 pilot with roughly 500 flight hours. In this episode of the Drone Radio Show, Dr. Jacob talks about OSU's efforts to advance the nation's counter-UAS capabilities; what Ukraine's drone innovations reveal about the future of warfare, and how OSU's research in atmospheric science, public safety, and wildlife applications is shaping the next generation of drone operations.

#nationalinterest The unfortunate Tejas crash and the pilot's death at the Dubai Air Show are a shattering moment. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is too strong, proud and professional to let this weigh it down. For India's policymakers, however, this is a useful juncture to reflect on whether they've been, and are being entirely fair to the IAF, given what it needs. Or in the demands they place on the IAF, the compromises and “adjustments” they seek. It is also important, however, that we take a deep breath and remind ourselves that pilots are particularly tough people. Among the toughest of them will be found in the IAF because globally they are some of those few who remain perpetually in operational mode — Watch this week's #NationalInterest with ThePrint's Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To read this week's National Interest: https://theprint.in/national-interest/a-tribute-to-tejas-indias-delay-culture-is-the-real-enemy-in-the-skies/2789632/

"The Venus flytrap, a devouring organism, aptly named for the goddess of love." ― Tennessee Williams, Suddenly Last Summer "The first screenplay Griffith wrote was Cardula, a Dracula-themed story involving a vampire music critic. After Corman rejected the idea, Griffith says he wrote a screenplay titled Gluttony, in which the protagonist was "a salad chef in a restaurant who would wind up cooking customers and stuff like that, you know? We couldn't do that though because of the code at the time. So I said, 'How about a man-eating plant?', and Roger said, 'Okay.' By that time, we were both drunk." - wikipedia

Across October 2025, 315,000 private flights departed worldwide, a 5% increase on 2024. While this is less than 1% of monthly commercial flights globally, private jet travel is still on the rise. The Covid-19 pandemic saw an increase in private travel for health reasons and with hybrid working now popular, private business travel is gaining momentum. But there are many areas the industry needs to focus on over the next five years to maintain growth. In this episode we look at the future of private aviation, exploring the trends, sustainability challenges and the technologies that could power flight in the future. I speak with Adel Mardini, CEO of Jetex a private aviation company based in Dubai with fixed-base operators and ground handling stations in over 50 locations worldwide. Alongside Adel is JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, a global leader in electric powered flight.Sources: FT Resources, Forbes, FlyAPG, Lifestyledaily.com, Nature.com, US Environment Protection Agency, UK Government, privatejetcardcomparisons.comThis content is paid for by Jetex and is produced in partnership with the Financial Times' Commercial Department. What caused the wonderful display of Northern Lights, and will it happen again tonight? WCCO TV Chief Meteorologist Chris Shaffer joined Vineeta with the details on the WCCO Morning News.
Aviation could account for up to 20% of global carbon emissions by 2050, but as Professor Tom Conlon explains, the real barrier to change isn't technology, it's finance. He believes that if the sector is to grow, it has to decarbonise, but to do so, bold investor actions are required. Tom's recent research, featured in Science, one of the world's leading academic journals, explores how new financial models can drive deep decarbonisation in aviation.
As I write this, Mercury is about thirty minutes from his station, and we are about to ride along for the messenger's third and final retrograde journey of 2025.Mercury's retrogrades always bring the potential for delays, cancellations, and communication mishaps, and, as the lovely Brandon mentions toward the end of the episode, shopping inefficiencies. (This is not the year for Black Friday deals unless you enjoy the returning-and-refunding merry-go-round.) But if we pay close attention, we can usually sense a deeper focus beneath the noise and chaos that swirl on the surface of Mercury's retrograde cycles. This time, the messenger's retrograde asks a pointed question: What's been left unfinished?Perfectly positioned to dialogue with Uranus and triangulate communication between Jupiter and Saturn, Mercury's retrograde plunges deep into strategy. We have six months to tie up loose ends in Taurus. Uranus has been working on innovating the Taurus part of our lives since 2018, and clarity strikes like lightning this month as we hone in on what still needs to be done. If this is progress we'd like to keep, it's time to take a look at how to seal it in, make it real, and make it lasting. In the Pisces part of our lives, Saturn has been building a bridge across murky waters, and this month Mercury helps Saturn solicit the support of Jupiter in Cancer to make the last three months of Saturn's building project count.I want to acknowledge once more what an incredible pleasure it is to talk with Brandon each month. Their insight is always rich and poetic, and if you are interested in learning more about their practice or booking a healing session, you can do that here.LIVE COMMUNITY SESSIONTheresa and I will be holding a live session tomorrow Monday, November 10th at 2PM Pacific. We'll be discussing the Mars+Mercury conjunction and sorting through Mercury's Retrograde. As always, this meeting is free and open to all. If you've been listening and hanging out on the sidelines, I highly encourage you to check out the warm and supportive community we've built here. I do my best to answer everyone's questions, and Theresa leads a group meditation. We meet on Zoom. With Love, Christina Get full access to Skies and Currents at skiesofgrace.substack.com/subscribe

In the 1930s, the St. Louis sky was frequently darkened with coal smoke so dense that it could block out the sun for days at a time. Many cities in the country faced some form of this problem, but none of them solved it until 1941 — when St. Louis showed off its clear, blue skies. Journalist Bob Wyss, author of “Black Gold: The Rise, Reign and Fall of American Coal,” takes us inside St. Louis' fight against coal. Joining the talk is local historian Andrew Theising to share insight on the role of Raymond Tucker, who became a key opponent of coal in the years before he became the city's mayor. Theising is the author of the 2024 book, "Mid-Mod Mayor: How Raymond Tucker Shaped St. Louis."
