Greetings and welcome to The I/O Tower: a podcast for all things TRON. I'm your host, David Fleming. This is Part 3 in my three-part series with TRON associate producer and co-visual effects supervisor Harrison Ellenshaw. Harrison reflects on conceptual artists Syd Mead, Jean "Moebius" Giraud, and Peter Lloyd, and how their combined talent and vision for TRON was both intimidating and exciting. He describes the casting process, and the challenge of conveying the story of TRON to auditioning actors—a challenge not all would overcome. Harrison details many scenes, such as Jeff Bridges' improvised "big door", Flynn's Arcade, Dillinger's helicopter, and Wendy Carlos' iconic soundtrack. And Harrison was crushed that Yori's "love scene" was left out. We close the interview with funny voices on the set of TRON, and Harrison's film about making a film—"Stardumb (Dead Silence)". One in a series of talks from the 2019 Models of Consciousness conference. Peter Lloyd School of Computing, University of Kent There has been a recent resurgence of interest in mental monism as a theory of consciousness (Goldschmidt & Pearce 2017, Chalmers 2017, 2018), and Lloyd (2006, 2019) has defended a form of Berkeleyanism that aligns with Pearce (2014) and Schrödinger’s (1958) “physical construct”. Unlike theories that take the conscious mind to supervene on the brain, mental monism faces the burden of constructing ab initio the structure and dynamics of the conscious mind without any physical substrate to fall back on. Little work has been done on modelling the constituents of the mind at this fundamental level, under the tenets of mental monism. Energy, which is the driver of the physical world, has no counterpart in the mental world, which operates informatically instead. An automata-theoretic approach to modelling the conscious mind within mental monism is therefore a natural choice to explore. The model is constrained by (a) the mind’s interaction with other minds including the background consciousness, an interaction that must be mapped onto quantum mechanical measurement in the physical construct; and (b) the basic features of a mind such as individuation, privacy, mental space, psychological embodiment, attention, memory. What do these constraints imply for any substrate-free automata-theoretic model of consciousness? Filmed at the Models of Consciousness conference, University of Oxford, September 2019.

John Williams' final television project in the 1970s teamed him with director Delbert Mann again, this time for "Jane Eyre." Williams composed this score while on a break from working on "Fiddler on the Roof," and the love Williams had (and continues to have) for all things English is on full display in the score. Peter Lloyd, the principal flute player for the London Symphony Orchestra, gets to shine as the score features plenty of flute melodies. Host Jeff Commings is joined by guest co-host Yavar Moradi, who counts "Jane Eyre" as his favorite John Williams score. Relax for a lengthy (one full hour!) conversation about the creation of the score and highlights of the music.

Today is a special episode of This Makes Me Happy, and it’s the creative brainchild of This Makes Me Happy, a podcast about people and what makes them happy; and Design Conversations, an AIGA Philadelphia series where I chat with designers about their work and their career. The following conversation was a live recording in front of an audience for DesignPhiladelphia 2017. I want to thank the Center for Architecture and Design and DesignPhiladelphia for providing the venue, technical support, and for listing this event as part of DesignPhiladelphia. Thank you to AIGA Philadelphia for partnering on the creative happy hour before the event and for all the support, and everyone who contributed to the happy hour (honeygrow for providing the food, Yards for providing the beer, the AIGA board, and especially the AIGA volunteers Kevin Warren and Alex Kim). Thanks to SteeleEmpire for recording this episode. Thank you to Jason Zappolo for editing this episode. Thanks to everyone who attended. And a very special thanks to the five wonderful people who agreed to participate in this recording: Elissa Bloom, Executive Director, Philadelphia Fashion Incubator; Dr. Peter Lloyd Jones, Associate Dean and Director, MEDstudio@Jefferson and Trudy Anne Watt, Senior Fellow and Co-Director Research, MEDstudio@Jefferson; Dr. Natalie Nixon, Design Strategist, Figure 8 Thinking; Christine Sheller, Vicepresident of Design, FS Investments, President, AIGA Philadelphia. For this conversation, I asked the five panelists to put together a short presentation, starting with the phrase, “Design Makes Me Happy Because…”. After the each presented, I asked them questions related to their design experiences and opened up the floor to questions from the audience (the questions came in via text). I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. http://www.thehappypodcast.com/episode62
Peter Lloyd-Sherlock examines the social protection, health, and well being of older people in developing countries. In this conversation he looks at some myths about elder care in developing countries (strong family support is not always present or adequate), considers the responsibilities of researchers who collaborate with NGOs, and calls for greater social care for elders. Peter Lloyd-Sherlock is Professor of Social Policy & International Development in the School of International Development at East Anglia University, England. His main area of research is the social protection, health, and well being of older people in developing countries. He is also interested in the economic and social effects of non-communicable diseases, such as stroke, heart disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. He works closely with a wide range of international development agencies.
Steve Metcalf is the new principal bassist for the Colorado Symphony. I first became acquainted with Steve several years ago when he was an undergrad student at Indiana University creating cool cover videos of pop songs for his YouTube Channel. Steve went on to study with Peter Lloyd at the Colburn School in Los Angeles and moved into a temporary contract with the Colorado Symphony before winning the principal job in 2017. We dig into a ton of topics, including: breakthroughs in Steve’s audition process why undergraduate degrees should have more of a business focus to them recording excerpts and putting them up on his Instagram account as he neared his Colorado Symphony audition playing his mock audition for a group of climbers Links to Check Out: Steve's website Steve's YouTube Channel Steve's Instagram Steve's Colorado Symphony profile YouTube videos: Passione Amorosa Red Hot Chili Peppers - C'mon Girl Cover Smash Mouth - All Star Cover Feat. Rosin Saver is a revolutionary storage device that keeps bass rosin feeling as fresh as the day it was made. It was developed in Sweden by a pair professional bassists and Rice graduates. What makes bass rosin so soft and sticky is the addition of natural waxes and solvents. Basically, as these evaporate, your rosin becomes a dry, powdery and useless. Rosin Saver prevents this evaporation by completely saturating the air surrounding your rosin, The result is rosin that always feels and sounds great regardless of the weather, temperature or venue and vastly extends the life of rosin. Rosin Saver is used by members of top orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the MET orchestra, the Los Angles Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra among many others. Use the promo code 'HEATH' at checkout for 10% off any and all orders from rosinsaver.com.
I had a wonderful time chatting with Detroit Symphony principal bassist Kevin Brown. Kevin studied with Peter Lloyd, Paul Ellison, and David Allen Moore prior to his appointment with the Detroit Symphony and also won the 2009 International Society of Bassists Orchestral Competition. We dig deep into a number of topics: growing up in Minnesota and starting the bass at age 3 studying with Peter Lloyd, Paul Ellison, and David Allen Moore listening to excerpts like Ein Heldenleben while doing stretches living a musical life rather than just being a bass player long-term audition preparation making breakthroughs by only choosing to meet his own standards becoming a musical scholar of sorts during audition preparation advice that CSO principal bassist Alex Hanna gave to Kevin as he was getting ready to do a trial for principal bass of the Detroit Symphony advice he’d have for his 23-year-old self We also talk about playing incidental solos and how much it resembles playing an audition for Kevin, and we feature excerpts of Kevin playing Bach as well as an excerpt of the Vanhal Concerto with the Detroit Symphony. Kevin's a great person and was a lot of fun to chat with! Peter Lloyd Jones is a hybrid innovator, scientist and academic whose initial discoveries have uncovered fundamental mechanisms in stem cell biology, embryogenesis and human disease, including breast cancer and lung development. Jones’s work actively seeks and finds new solutions to complex problems via extreme collaborations within seemingly unrelated fields, including fashion, industrial, textile and architectural design. Following completion of his Ph.D. at Cambridge University in Genetics and Pathology, Jones conducted post-doctoral fellowships in 3-D Biology with Drs. Mina Bissell and Marlene Rabinovitch at UC Berkeley and The University of Toronto, respectively. Currently, he is the first Associate Dean of Emergent Design and Creative Technologies at The Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University (TJU; Est1825), where in 2013, he founded MEDstudio@JEFF; a research and education space focused on discovering new and dignified solutions in health care using approaches rooted in human-centered design. In 2014, MEDstudio@JEFF partnered with DesignPhiladelphia and Friends of The Philadelphia Rail Park to explore how design could be deployed to benefit heath at an urban scale. Prior to this, Jones was a tenured Associate Professor of Pathology at The University of Pennsylvania, where he established a national center for the study of pulmonary hypertension, and co-founded the Sabin+Jones LabStudio with architectural researcher Jenny E. Sabin, now at Cornell. In addition to 100+ scientific pubs and numerous installations across the globe, Jones’ ideas on contemporary relationships between biology and design have been featured in the catalog accompanying the Gen(H)ome exhibition at the MAK Center in L.A., and in an issue of 306090 dedicated to models. Recently, Jones was elected into National Academy of Inventors. nominated for Scientist of the Year at The Philly Geek Awards, and in 2016 he made his one and onlyTV acting debut as a master-spy on the Emmy award-winning National Geographic science series, Brain Games. Also in 2016, he collaborated once more as curator and designer with Jenny Sabin Studio (which acts as lead design) of THE BEACON for Health and Wellness futures, a responsive ecosystem that probes the interactions that might exist between medicine and design at their outer limits. THE BEACON debuts for 10 days on Oct 06 during DesignPhiladelphia 2016 at Lubert Plaza/TJU in Philadelphia with a focus on reimagining urban health via the future Philadelphia RAIL PARK.
Doctors series producer and writer Peter Lloyd had always wanted to incorporate Shakespeare into the show. With 2016 being the 400th anniversary of the death of the great bard and the BBC celebrating in grand style with its six-month Shakespeare Festival, it seemed the perfect opportunity. In this podcast Joe Godwin, director of the BBC Academy and BBC Birmingham, hears why Peter decided to avoid the well-trodden path of Shakespeare's plays and use his sonnets for a week of episodes. They talk about how creative risks like this can be very popular with audiences. The two of them also discuss the practicalities writing an episode using a sonnet for inspiration and incorporating a reading into each one. Peter also talks about how he worked with the BBC iWonder team to produce a guide to the sonnets, as well as how the cast leapt at the chance to take part with a straight-to-camera reading of a sonnet. Moving away from Shakespeare, Peter and Joe talk about diversity on the show and in drama production in general - both in casting and behind the camera. They then go on to discuss a week of Doctors programmes highlighting homelessness that were inspired by the story of a homeless man Peter met on a night out in Birmingham. Joe also finds out why Doctors is a continuing drama series, and not a soap, and the difference This podcast, edited by Ben Toone, is a recording of a masterclass at BBC Birmingham on 22 April 2016.
We're featuring San Francisco Symphony Principal Double Bass and University of Michigan faculty member Scott Pingel on this week's show. In addition to holding down the principal bass chair for the San Francisco Symphony, Scott taught for several years at the San Francisco Conservatory, and he served as Principal Bass of the Charleston Symphony prior to his appointment in San Francisco. This was really a great interview, and it was a pleasure to connect again with Scott (we played together for the Spoleto Festival over a decade ago). You'll learn a lot about how Scott approaches practicing for auditions, his interesting path to becoming a bass player, and the instruments and bows on which he has spent the last several years performing. About Scott: Scott Pingel began playing the double bass at age 17 because of a strong interest in jazz, Latin, and classical music. In 2004, at age 29, he became the principal bass of the San Francisco Symphony and was named by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of the most prominent additions to the ensemble. Previously, Pingel served as principal bass of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, performed with the Metropolitan Opera, the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, and served as guest principal with the National Arts Center Orchestra in Canada. His solo performances with ensembles such as the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Academy Orchestra, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and in recitals frequently consisting of his own arrangements, have been met with high critical acclaim. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with such luminaries as Yo-Yo Ma, Julia Fischer, Gilbert Kalish, Wu Han, Joseph Silverstein, Yefim Bronfman, and members of the esteemed Emerson, Miro, Pacifica, St. Lawrence, Danish, and Takacs Quartets. He can often be heard at the Music@Menlo and Music in the Vineyards festivals and on television and radio programs including NPR's Performance Today. Formerly active as a jazz musician and electric bassist, Pingel worked with greats including Michael Brecker, Geoff Keezer, and James Williams, and performed in venues from Birdland in New York to Fasching in Stockholm. Pingel has taught masterclasses at prestigious institutions such as the Curtis Institute of Music, The Julliard School, Colburn School, Boston University, Manhattan School of Music, Shanghai Conservatory, Beijing Central Conservatory, and the New World Symphony. Pingel's primary instructors were James Clute, Peter Lloyd, and Timothy Cobb. He earned a BM degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a MM degree from the Manhattan School of Music, and spent two years as a fellow at the New World Symphony. Outside of music, Pingel spent many years studying the ancient Korean martial art of Hwa Rang Do, in which he holds a black belt. He was an instructor at the Madison Academy of Hwa Rang Do and founded the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Hwa Rang Do/Tae Soo Do Program, which continues to this day. Pingel lives in Ann Arbor with his wife, Iris, and their daughters, Hannah and Sophia. Mark Dolan and Lizzie Cundy bring you all of this week's Hot Gossip!
In Egypt, Al Jazeera journalist Peter Greste and others have been arrested for reporting both sides of the story – and this is getting lots of attention, as it should. But what of media workers in South East Asia being routinely punished for questioning authority or putting forward an alternative point of view? In Vietnam and Myanmar, journalists, bloggers and human rights activists are routinely jailed for their reporting. In Cambodia, journalists reporting stories counter to powerful interests have been assassinated and in the Philippines, journalists are often killed for doing their work, making it one of the most dangerous reporting environments in the world. In Thailand, there's a culture of media self-censorship over the monarchy: websites discussing politics are shut down by the government and laws like lese majeste and the computer crimes act are used to intimidate and punish journalists. And in Malaysia, the public discourse is controlled by state-owned media, which allows for little real political debate. Join the Walkleys for a talk featuring two of Australian journalism's leading international reporters. Zoe Daniel and Peter Lloyd share the experience of reporting from around the world.
