A group of bikies converged on Sydney airport. Within minutes, one was dead and others injured. It was an incident that set off one of the world's most intense and effective gang operations, and led to a plethora of law changes and high profile convictions. Deborah Wallace is a titan of NSW Police. Retiring in 2019 after 36 years in the force, she became known across Australia as 'The Gangbuster', after successful operations in the intense region of Cabramatta, and then the aforementioned Strike Force Raptor. The beginning of her career though was much more abstract. She was involved in one of Australia's most horrific cases. The rape and murder of Anita Cobby in 1986. Understand the impact of that case on Deb, and Australia as a whole as Brent Sanders steps through the career of one of Australia's most decorated police officers. We return to normal programming – temporarily at least ahead of our GABS Hottest 100 Countdown livestream – for Episode 028 of The Crafty Pint Podcast, featuring one of the interviews we recorded on the road in South Australia in late 2024.That said, it's arguably a little harsh to refer to Loophole Brewing as normal. Sure, it's a brewery that makes beer, but there's more to distinguish Loophole from your run-of-the-mill breweries than most. The entire operation is off grid. It's based on the grounds of a winery (but is no token beer brand designed to offer a modicum of choice at the cellar door). They grow barley they've used in their beers. They've won trophies for beer-wine hybrids and beer featuring local saltwater, and fermented the winery's grapes with nothing but Brettanomyces. In short, there was plenty to talk about when we pulled up at Cape Jaffa Wines – the first to plant vines on this stretch of the Limestone Coast – half an hour north of Robe.We were there to catch up with Tom O'Reilly, head brewer and also the man who designed and built the brewery for the Hooper family, the pioneers who saw the potential for producing wine in the region back in the 1990s.As well as discussing the brewery and winery's innovative and sustainable approach and regular cross-pollination of ideas and ingredients, we chat about Sunlight Liquor – Tom's mead brand, making a positive impact on the wider beer industry, the importance of educating drinkers, and how a mishap on his first night shift at Stone & Wood led to the creation of a Molly Rose favourite.Prior to the chat with Tom, we look at some of the positive news stories of the past week, including the imminent arrival of a Bridge Road bar at Melbourne Airport – hot on the heels of a Stone & Wood bar opening at Sydney Airport, the acquisition of Port Mac brewery Moorebeer by its long-term head brewer, and the arrival of Subculture Brewing in Brunswick. We've enjoyed a great start to our campaign shining a light on good beer citizens, "Have you done a Rallings?", while applications are now open for this year's Young Henrys IWD Brewing Scholarship supporting women and non-binary individuals aiming to get into the industry too. This week's episode also features a new segment featuring Steve "Hendo" Henderson of Rockstar Brewer with tips on brewing better beer.Start of segments: 12:43 – Tom O'Reilly (part one) 29:43 – Rockstar Brewer 35:28 – Tom O'Reilly (part two)Relevant links: Loophole Brewing Cape Jaffa Wines Bridge Road Brewers Land At Melbourne Airport Brewer Buys Brewery Who Brews Subculture Beers? A few months after the government's Aviation White Paper promised action on disability access in airports and planes, a new advocacy campaign is calling for faster change in the industry. Led by disability rights spokesperson Shane Hryhorec, the campaign says there are significant systemic problems around access that are leaving disabled passengers at risk of humiliation or injury, and that people with disabilities should get a seat at the table to push for improvements. Adam and Jake unpack the issue and ask whether the industry – and government – are doing enough to make sure disabled passengers can travel safely and comfortably. Plus, airports make the jump to 100 per cent renewable energy, the problem with Qantas' new Christmas livery, and from Florida with love – will Sydney Airport's “woman with the golden gun” fly another day?

I love the Government's thinking on infrastructure planning. It wants us to have a 30-year plan for big projects that politicians, generally, wouldn't be able to muck around with. Which, of course, would give us all a lot of certainty. It would also give the people who invest their own money in infrastructure certainty, as well. So a great idea. Because we are seeing right now how hopeless we have become at long-term infrastructure planning, and the consequences seem to be coming at us left, right and centre. The inter-island ferries, electricity infrastructure, the state of our roads. The band-aid approach has got us in this mess. Not to mention all the political pipedreams and political interference. So, why wouldn't you try and get a long-term plan that everyone pretty much signs up to? It's a no-brainer. And, to try and make it happen, the Government is setting-up a new National Infrastructure Agency. Where I see it coming unstuck, though, is getting the politicians to agree on a 30-year plan. Even on the day it was announced, we had Labour complaining that they weren't given enough warning or weren't consulted enough before the Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop told the world about it yesterday. And the Green Party's Infrastructure spokesperson Julie Anne Genter is saying a 30-year-plan is great - as long as it puts the environment front right and centre. So, chances are, we'll have all the parties sitting in a room trying to agree and we'll have National wanting more motorways, Labour wanting more trains and the Greens wanting more cycleways. This is where I see the Government's idea coming unstuck. Which shouldn't be the case because, in other countries, politicians have managed to do what Chris Bishop wants to do. Across the ditch in New South Wales, they set-up Infrastructure New South Wales 13 years ago. Back in 2011, the then-state government decided long-term infrastructure projects were too important to be left to the whims of the political cycle, and it seems to have served them well. Since being set-up, Infrastructure New South Wales has helped deliver projects such as the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, planning of WestConnex and traffic management around Sydney Airport and Port Botany. It's also been involved heavily in the new metro system in Sydney which opened the other week - and people seem to be raving about it. And I suspect the plans by the government here to set-up a National Infrastructure Agency follows Chris Bishop's recent trip to Australia with the Prime Minister, Transport Minister Simeon Brown and Resources Minister Shane Jones. But I don't think Chris Bishop is going to get what he wants. Because —even though it's been done in other countries— I have zero faith that our politicians can agree on this. With Bonza gone and Rex fighting for its life in voluntary administration, the spotlight has once again turned to an old argument: that slot allocation at Sydney Airport unfairly advantages the major players. As the federal government looks to put Sydney slot management out to tender, do Qantas and Virgin really have their thumbs on the scales, as former ACCC chair Rod Sims has suggested? Adam and Jake look at the arguments on each side and the other factors that played into Bonza and Rex's respective failures. Google searches for “eyes hurt” spiked in the United States during the solar eclipse. And not many people should be shocked by that news. Scientists accidentally made a mouse grow legs where his genitals are supposed to be. If that happened to a human, they'd have a gig in porn. We learn some horrifying facts about primates from Michelea_Amanda on TikTok. A dog dropped a deuce in the aisle of a United Airlines plane, and forced the plane to divert. A passenger has been fined for urinating in a cup during a delay in deplaning after landing at Sydney Airport in Australia. Surprise - he was drunk. One in five Americans would like geneticists to re-introduce the saber toothed tiger. One in ten support the re-introduction of the Tyrannosaurus rex. Also, those people are idiots.

Everyone has heard of Leonard Cohen, but not so many know much about him. With this episode, we look to give you a taste of Mr Cohen – his views on life, women and songwriting; his extraordinary influence on modern songwriting; his legacy, and, of course, “Hallelujah”! A world that never had Leonard Cohen in it would be a much lesser place indeed. Jeff gives us his holiday report on a visit to the only Museum in the world dedicated to penises, whose prime exhibit is a plaster cast of Jimi Hendrix' tackle. (It's true!!) We give an update on our Ed Kuepper episode, with a report on his live concert in Sydney in September, which was fantastic! We take a quick look at a few of the icons we've lost so far this year including Tom Verlaine (Television), Burt Bacharach, Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Francis Monkman (Sky, 801), and Sinead O'Connor. In honour of Sinead, our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is her “I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got” (1990), which we both agree is an absolute cracker of an album. Haven't heard it? GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Alan Jones, is one of Australia's most well-known and popular radio broadcasters. Jones was a former Wallabies coach who began his radio career in 1985 as a morning's host on Radio 2UE. He spent 16 years there, the majority as the network's breakfast presenter, before moving to 2GB in 2001. He organised the famous Lugarno Lights Christmas lights display in Sydney in the early 2000s which raised just under $400,000 for the Make a Wish foundation. He then spent 7 years successfully campaigning for the installation of school zone flashing lights at all schools. That was followed by a 4-year project documenting security shortcomings at Sydney Airport that left it open to terrorist attack. His current campaign relating to the transportation of refrigerators aims to save consumers money.
Australia correspondent Karen Middleton joins Kathryn to talk about the concern over the resilience of the travel industry after days of chaos in airports at the start of the school holidays. Australia's new National Anti-Corruption Commission has started work, with a warning to politicians not to "weaponise" its work. Controversial right-wing MP Pauline Hanson has hired two top barristers to represent her in a defamation case brought by a Greens senator she tweeted should "p*** off back to Pakistan" and the Australian cricket team has asked for extra security as the abuse continues from England fans after that out-of-crease stumping at Lords.
