Originally written as the second (slow) movement of a string quartet, Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" went on to become one of the most popular symphonic works of the 20th century in its final orchestral arrangement. The solemn character of the Adagio has led to its frequent use as mourning music, much to Barber’s distress since it was not his intention to write a requiem. It was broadcast following the announcement of President Roosevelt’s death in 1945, and performed by the New York Philharmonic to mark Barber’s own death in 1981. Indeed, the Adagio seems fated to be used whenever someone needs music that sounds both “ceremonial” and “American.” Whatever its unintentional cultural accretions, Barber's melody is still both beautiful and powerful after countless hearings. This week we explore one of the most popular, and most misunderstood, pieces of the 20th century. Barber's Adagio has been called "The Saddest Music Ever Written," and yet sadness was never Barber's intention in writing the piece. It also might surprise you to find out that the Barber Adagio was originally a part of a 3 movement string quartet. We'll talk about all of these contradictions while trying to understand just what makes this piece so moving, powerful, and profound.

I Play for Paris Pt.1 Eclectic Lounge with a few unexpected finds and some very tongue-in-cheek pop mashups..   One month ago some nihilistic losers butchered 130 women and men in Paris… Forget about the social media meltdown, France is my country and Paris my city. Whereas France is actually far from being the model country it aspires to be, by attacking “her” for being the “capital of prostitution and obscenity”, those bastards just proved that somehow those symbols of secularism and freedom are still alive and worth celebrating. Forward to a few days ago… I was unable to mix anything, which wasn’t dark and filled with anger for a month until we decided to have an impromptu party. The core nexus of friends who could make it facing Xtian who was wondering what would spark his muse and how he could get out of his negative loop and make himself and his friends happy. I played a 4 hour set, took about 20 minutes to get into it but once I found the right format for this forum it flowed. Got out of my spleen and played fun eclectic jams, old and new edits of tunes everyone knew but cuts they had not heard before. Whereas my usual format is to play current paid releases in whatever genre takes my fancy, I went into a “Richard Vasquez/Doctor Love” mode and played for me and for my friends. Lots of repeats but somehow that’s how we felt! We wanted to feel good and were oh-so very ready to try our best.   Four hours later, they were asking for more and pushing me to go harder and louder. Take that nihilistic butchers, this is our answer to your dead-end philosophy.   Set is cut into 3 parts, slightly edited of what did not quite work live but true to the spirit of the night.   Playlist: 1 Barber's Adagio for Strings. Cheska is a self - proclaimed Trance geek. She can talk about it for days and she enjoys telling the entire world how much Trance means to her. Her passion is fueled with the desire to showcase the beautiful euphoric sound of Trance. To her, Trance is a genre that deserves to be heard by everyone. Cheska can never forget the track that baptized her to the music. For her, it will always have a special place in her heart. Ferry Corsten's remix of Barber's Adagio for Strings by William Orbit touched her a great deal. She relates it to the sound of her unwavering passion for the music. She wants others to feel what she feels when she listens to Trance. Hence, she decided to learn the craft of djing by herself. She was ambitious like that - adamant on creating her own unique sound. 'The Sound of Cheska' is heavily influenced by the Dutch Trance Sound - warm, melodic, and most of all - danceable. To her, Trance is a musical journey in itself and she lets this shine through her mixing. ____________________________________________ Cheska and Her Flying Machine is a mix that feels like an air - filled musical journey. It will take you to greater heights while exploring various destinations both at the same time. The point of this is mix is to continue roving, soaring, and feeling every high you experience as you transcend to a different place. This journey will liberate you. The mix was wired to be 100% instrumental so that the listeners are encouraged to think, feel, and imagine. This will be the 1st installation for her three - part journey. The second mix will be all about the universe, the stars, and the galaxies up above. But until then, here is the 1st ep of the series to get you into that liberating mood. Enjoy!
