I was in Bournemouth on an assignment but arrived early to have a mooch about the town. I hadn't visited since 1999 and that was under the cover of darkness as we were going raving at an all nighter, although I forget which club it was we went to. What I do remember is that it was the first time I heard the Ferry Corsten remix of William Orbit's version of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. Anyway, I digress. Today it was calm and the sea had large gentle swells with non-boarded paddle boarders bobbing about. I loitered about under the zip line that goes from a tower at the end of the pier to the beach and after a few minutes some excited peoples zipped overhead.

Episode 152 Chapter 13, Edgard Varèse and The Listener's Experiment. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Playlist: CLASSICAL MUSIC WITH ELECTRONICS Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:28 00:00 1. Kenny and Mark re-string their banjos to break down BOTH versions of this fan favorite ballad (?) from MDNA. Topics include family prenups, Sex and the City's Bunny MacDougal (as well as Charlotte and Trey's doomed marriage), Marian Seldes, Lynn Cohen, Muni Long, Free School, the veteran Alain Whyte, Morrissey's Your Arsenal, MIKA, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, corsets, J Lo and Ben Affleck, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Ricky Gervais, Larry David, William Orbit's rewriting remixes, and the appeal of a Classic Six on the Upper East Side. Plus, Madonna starts soliciting cash from her audiences - and appears on The Marriage Ref. “Wondering where it all went” indeed!
Mark and Kenny get down on their knees to discuss the sparkling and oh-so-Catholic shoulda-been single fromMDNA. Topics include Kelis and the album she co-wrote with Jean Baptiste Flesh Tone, the return of poppy William Orbit, the Pet Shop Boys, Thomas Aquinas, Mark's grandfather, ICE CREAM, Kenny's play about miracles and Golda Meir, and the potential first Millennial saint. Plus, the transformative Orbit remix and Madonna's prayer in front of 10,000 fans in St. Louis - I like it that way!
Kenny and Mark strap on their pumps and dance with one of the darker, secret tracks on MDNA. Topics include William Orbit, the brilliant Klas Åhlund & his collaborations with Robyn, lyrical weaponry, the sleaze of the Rolling Stones, the return of Dita Parlo, and a special three song story (across three albums) about vengeance. Quiet in the limousine!
Mark and Kenny explore the dark and vengeful corners of MDNA on this audacious and visceral story song. Topics include sunset trickery, transforming a demo, studio nerd-dom, William Orbit, Demolition Crew, the power of dubstep, the arrival of a new Madonna voice going there, Tori Amos' Strange Little Girls album, the emergence of musical mash-ups, and another reckoning with Madonna's visual (and lyrical) obsession with guns. Plus, Kenny and Mark figure out who wound up with all of THEIR jack and also rescue a lost unofficial Tracy Young. Now DRIVE, bitch!
Kenny and Mark kick off a packed Season Six assessing the many non-musical ventures Madonna embarks on into the second decade of the 21st century including clothing lines, fragrances and gyms. Plus, a deep dive conversation about W.E. and its official theme song “Masterpiece”. Topics include: the emergence of Lourdes Leon, Taylor Momson, Zendaya and the rest of the Material Girl models, Madonna as stylist, the departures of Tracy Anderson and Caresse Henry, co-writing with Alex Keshishian, Wallis Simpson as played by Andrea Riseborough, Oscar Isaac, the aloofness of Abbie Cornish, David Harbour, the silent songwriting team of Julie Frost and Jimmy Harry, the Stephen Sondheim auction, the matchmaking prowess of William Orbit, Abel Korzeniowski, Henry Mancini, Dimitry from Paris, Hagen Bogdanski, HYDRANGEAS!, the spat at the Golden Globes with David Furnish and Sir Elton John, it's all so reductive… We are thrilled to be back and to be hanging in the Louvre - totes mcgotes!
#timetotalkaustralia Music is the eighth studio album by American singer Madonna, released on 2000 by Maverick Records. Following the success of her previous album Ray of Light (1998), she intended to embark on a tour. However, her record company encouraged her to return to the studio and record new music before going on the road. Her collaboration with producers Mirwais Ahmadzaï and William Orbit resulted a more experimental direction for the album. Music has an overall dance-pop and electronicavibe, with influnces from rock, country and folk. The album was mostly recorded at Sarm West and East Studios in London, England. Elaborating on the country theme for the album, Madonna reinvented her image as a cowgirl.
"Strange Cargo III" is a mesmerizing sonic journey crafted by electronic music pioneer William Orbit. Released in 1993, this album seamlessly blends ambient, downtempo, and electronic elements to create a lush and immersive listening experience. Orbit's masterful production weaves together intricate layers of synths, samples, and beats, evoking a dreamlike atmosphere that transports listeners to ethereal realms. Each track unfolds like a cinematic vignette, filled with hypnotic rhythms and ethereal melodies that captivate the imagination. From the tranquil beauty of "Water From a Vine Leaf" to the pulsating energy of "The Story of Light," "Strange Cargo III" is a timeless masterpiece that showcases Orbit's innovative approach to electronic music.Listen to the album: SpotifyApple MusicCheck out Taking It DownLinks:Official websiteContactSupport us on PatreonDISCLAIMER: Due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to play pieces of the songs we cover in these episodes. Episode 110 Before and After Ambient, Part 1 Playlist Erik Satie, “Vexations” (1893-94), First, we will hear two piano versions (1 and 4) of this short work that was intended to be played repeatedly in one sitting 840 times in succession. The piano version was performed by Jeroen van Veen on the album Satie, Complete Piano Music (2016 Brilliant Classics). Then, we will hear an electronic version by Bhutan from Vexations (2016 Venado). Argentinean group Bhutan realized this electronic version of the Erik Satie piece in 2016. I thought it would be fitting to open the program with this because Satie's was one of the first works to be recognized in recent times as a kind of proto ambient composition. Satie preferred the term “furniture music” and thought that it would be suitable for background sound during a dinner party. The Bhutan version, realized in electronic instrumentation, is a fitting bridge of the old and the new when it comes to ambient compositions. John Cage, “In A Landscape” (1948) from In A Landscape played by Victoria Jordanova (2007 Arpaviva Recordings). This early Cage work was originally arranged either for piano or harp. It is very much the interpretation that makes this akin to ambient music. I selected this version for electric harp because it maintains the original's sense of suspended time and energy. I also like William Orbit's version but he took the orchestration to greater lengths and transforming it into something not so ambient. There is also a really quiet piano version by Stephen Drury which remains true to Cage's original intent of being “soft and meditative” with “resonances” being sustained by depressing both pedals throughout the performance. But I included this version for electric harp by Jordanova because it is more in tune with the electronic nature of the music we feature in this program. Morton Feldman, “Projection 1” (1950) from Arne Deforce, Yutaka Oya, Patterns In A Chromatic Field (2009 Aeon). Cello, Arne Deforce; Piano, Yutaka Oya; composed by, Morton Feldman. This is an acoustic work by Feldman (I couldn't find any electronic renditions) but I include it to draw similarities to the work of Harold Budd, also a pianist. In fact, Feldman was a long-standing favorite of Budd. Raymond Scott, “Sleepy Time” from Soothing Sounds for Baby, Volume 1 (1964 Epic). This legendary work is from a set of electronic and ambient records that Scott produced in the early 1960s as background music to help babies go to sleep. The electronic music was produced with his own creation, the Electronium, a from-scratch built custom synthesizer that combines electronic sequencing with tone generation and various filters. Eliane Radigue, “Vice - Versa, Etc. (Mix 1)” (1970) from (2013 Vice - Versa, Etc.). Processed tape reorder feedback. Realized at the composer's studio in Paris. Premiered in 1970 at Galerie Lara Vincy in Paris, on the occasion of a group exhibition. The stereo synthesis presented here was made in Lyon at Studio Fluorescent between 2010 and 2011 by Emmanuel Holterbach. Produced, composed, recorded using feedback by Eliane Radigue. Originally conceived as a sound installation, using several reel-to-reel tape players controlled through a mixing desk. The tapes could be played at different speeds, either forward or backward, right channel only, left channel only or simultaneously. The audience could create their own mix. Teresa Rampazzi (N.P.S.), “Environ” (1970) from Musica Endoscopica (2008 Die Schachtel). Created in 1970, this work represents a kind of reproduction in electronic sound of an ambient environment, peppered with noise and even voice. Rampazzi was a pioneering female composer of electronic music who founded the N.P.S. (Nuove Proposte Sonore) group and studio, where this was realized. Harmonia, “Hausmusik” from Harmonia (1974 Brain). Recorded and produced June - November '73 in the Harmonia home studio. Guitar, Piano, Organ, electronic percussion, Michael Rother; Organ, Keyboards, Guitar, electronic percussion, J. Roedelius; Synthesizer, Guitar, electronic percussion, D. Moebius. Brian Eno, “Discreet Music” (excerpt) from Discreet Music (1976 Obscure). Synthesizer with Digital Recall System, Graphic Equalizer, Echo Unit, Delay, Tape, Brian Eno. Brian Eno (b. 1948) worked with tape delay much in the manner defined by Oliveros for I of However, he expressed a somewhat indifferent attitude toward the outcome. He described the realization of Discreet Music (1975): “Since I have always preferred making plans to executing them, I have gravitated toward situations and systems that, once set into operation, could create music with little or no intervention on my part. That is to say, I tend toward the roles of planner and programmer, and then become an audience to the results.” Eno's composition consisted of a diagram of the devices used to generate the music. His approach was identical to that of Oliveros except that the sound material was specifically melodic and he did not modify or interact with the sound once the process was set in motion. The result in Discreet Music is the gradual transformation of a recognizable musical phrase. These 10 minutes are excerpted from the beginning of the extended work lasting 31 minutes. Brian Eno, “Through Hollow Lands (For Harold Budd)” from Before and After Science (1977 Island). Bass, Paul Rudolph; Vocals, Bell, Mini-Moog, CS80, AKS synthesizers, piano, guitar, Brian Eno. This is one of the only tracks that I would consider to be ambient from this album. Robert Ashley, “Automatic Writing” (excerpt) (1974–79) from Automatic Writing (1979 Lovely Music). This work was much talked about when it was released on record by Lovely Music Ltd. in 1979. Ashley wrote it over a five-year period after having just come back from his self-imposed exile from composing in the early 1970s. He performed it many times in various formative stages with the Sonic Arts Union before finally committing it to disc. It does indeed have a vocal, but it is also imbued with quiet, ASMR kinds of sounds that mesmerize. The basic musical material of Automatic Writing was the spoken voice, closely miked, uttering what Ashley characterized as “involuntary speech”: random, seemingly rational comments that might not make sense at all, depending on the context in which they were heard. These 10 minutes are excerpted from the beginning of the extended work lasting 46 minutes. Sri Dinesh, “Le Chant Des Étoiles” from Para Symphonie (1978 Alain Grima). French album of music to accompany meditation. It consists largely of short, repeated organ patterns and falls within the frame of mind for which ambient music was intended. Brian Eno, “2/2” from Ambient 1: Music for Airports (1978). Engineer, Conny Plank (yes, the producer of Kraftwerk). Composed, conceptualized, produced and engineered by Brian Eno. Theresa Rampazzi, “Atmen Noch” (1980) from from Musica Endoscopica (2008 Die Schachtel). Conrad Schnitzler, “Control B” from Control (1981 Dys). Edition of 1000 copies. An electronic work by Schnitzler, who played the devices, produced, and recorded the music. Opening background music: Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, Bloom 3.2 (10) (2014 Opal Ltd.). Bloom is a generative music application that composes ambient music. This recording was made using Bloom running in “Classic” mode on a Macbook Pro running Ventura 13.5.2. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.
Award winning Music Producer William Orbit chews the fat with David & Joe. He's sold 200 million recordings worldwide but has a few tech issues getting on zoom. William walks them around his flat in Venice and shows them the view out of his window before giving them a history lesson. He's been writing some new tracks which he's excited about as his assistant has been bopping to them. William tells them about working on a drum loop with Madonna. He tells them how he got into music at the age of 23 playing dusty old instruments in a squat. David tells him about his song Happy Happy Girl. Georgia - "Give It Up For Love," a 2023 single from Domino Records UK artist Georgia shares a single from her forthcoming full-length, Euphoric, out July 28th via Domino Records. The album marks the first time she has worked with an outside producer on her own work, and she couldn't have chosen better than Rostam (formerly of Vampire Weekend, and now collaborator/producer for Haim, Carly Rae Jepsen, Clairo). Today's Song of the Day was inspired by Danny Boyle's 2000 film The Beach, and legendary producer William Orbit (who appears on the film's soundtrack). The single's accompanying video — directed by production duo Mathy & Fran — captures that weightlessness conveyed in her song. “We wanted to explore the song's themes of caution and bravery, through the act of diving. Abandoning stability to leap into the unknown, diving feels like both descending and soaring, and the perfect analogy for 'Give It Up For Love.' Creating a feeling of infinite free-fall for the choruses, our goal was to show ‘giving up' as something that leaves you weightless, rather than broken. The sunrise colour worlds are a nod to the Californian skies where Georgia recorded the track.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
While waiting for today's guest, music producer William Orbit, David sings some of his songs to Joe and they talk about the amazing people William has worked with. William seems to have got the dates muddled and doesn't appear on zoom. To fill time they talk about the 'Derek' prank they played on Paul McCaffrey and come up with a list of potential comedy mates they could play the same prank on. When William's assistant pops up to lets them know that he has actually forgotten they turn the ep into pranky time. They call Sean Walsh and ask him how he feels about the prank then get carried away sending the prank to comedian Jarred Christmas. The musician and producer on working with Madonna and why he is mining a new seam of creativity.
1990. Well it certainly was time for the guru, but as the first year of the new decade was drawing to a close, it was time - a little time, if you will - for so much more. And as always, our favourite compilation series was there to capture it all.So volume 18 provided us with the NOW albums second numbered album of 1990 in the shape of big ballads, bigger ballads, pop, rock, dance, indie and even Timmy Mallet. Yes, all life forms were present and correct! Elton was BACK and, with Bernie Taupin, scoring his biggest hit in years (and a first solo No1!). Sinead was rewriting the Prince songbook and music video like no one else could, William Orbit was quietly ushering in the rest of the decade with some fascinating rhythms and Kylie was not only sidling nicely alongside her then boyfriend Michael in INXS, she was riding on the love train somewhere back in time. There were remixes and reissues aplenty too; best of albums for PiL and Talk Talk alongside (are we allowed to say indie dance?) excursions from The Cure, Sting and Suzanne vega were reminding us that the 80s were still a force to be remixed with. And so to step back in time to NOW18 in this episode we are joined by film and TV music supervisor Lucy Bright. Lucy started out at Mute Records working with artists such as Nick Cave and Depeche Mode, she then moved to Warner Classics for six years before leaving to manage composer Michael Nyman. In 2020 Lucy launched her own music publishing company, Bright Notion Music, which currently represents and nurtures some of the world's most influential artists and composers working today. And Lucy has music supervised some of the most critically-acclaimed British films and TV series of recent years: Samantha Morton's directorial debut The Unloved, Charlotte Wells' Cannes winning After Sun and both Shane Meadows's This is England ‘90 and The Virtues. So we can think of no one better to navigate us through an album chock filled with film and TV related tracks! Jeans! Pottery Wheels! Julia Roberts! Bridesmaids! Julian Temple in the desert! Tim Pope in a wardrobe! As well as deciphering these conundrums, Lucy also joyfully revisits her first (and only?) NOW album whilst delighting us with some wonderful and personal stories including guest appearances from Youth, James Mason, Prince (and a chocolate milkshake), Michael Hutchence, Shane Meadows and Holly Knight (she wrote some big songs, oh yes) to name but a few! 1990 - who has time for the guru with all of this going on?Jump straight back in to the wonderfully eclectic and memory packed NOW18! Madonna month continues with The Ultimate Dance Collection Volume 2 and this one is a whopper! We've got a lot of ground to cover, so let's get right to it. First off, you may be scratching your head and wondering why "Like A Prayer," "Express Yourself," "Keep It Together," and "Vogue" re-appear in this second volume. Simply put, the versions (except for "Vogue") on Volume 1 were the straight-up 80s dance versions. Before jumping into "Vogue," Madonna allowed Shep Pettibone to remix two of the biggest hits from her "Like A Prayer" album in the burgeoning House Music sound that was coming on strong in the underground dance music scene. While Shep's remixes are prevalent throughout the 80s, he was best known for the specific style that reflects the decade. I don't think he became a household name until his remix of New Order's "Bizzare Love Triangle" was re-released on their "Substance" album. Moving towards the House sound was Shep's way of adapting to the changing landscape. The synergy between Madonna and himself was one of many long-lasting relationships she built with DJs to fuel her music to wider audiences. It would have been blasphemy had I not included his versions of those songs that launched Madonna's movement into greater experimentation in her work. Not only did the 90s provide fertile ground for Madonna's creativity but opportunities for her to poke the eye of the Christian right. "The Immaculate Collection," a collection of her greatest 80s hits included her 1990 #1 "Vogue" and two new tracks "Justify My Love" (written by Lenny Kravitz) and "Rescue Me." The video for "Justify My Love" was so provocative and controversial at the time that MTV would only air it after midnight. It was also the first video VHS to sell over a million copies. Soon after, Madonna dug her heels into House Music, Trip Hop, and Electronica bringing William Orbit on board — a move that would be pivotal by mid-decade. She simultaneously released "Erotica" along with an exquisite coffee table book titled "Sex," which went on to sell 1.5 million copies. The book contained soft pornographic imagery and sadomasochistic acts that ruffled a lot of feathers at the time of its release and had a massive social and cultural impact that's lasted to this day. She took a lot of heat from fans and critics alike and frankly didn't give a fuck. She would later address the criticism in "Human Nature" the fourth single released from "Bedtime Stories." Controversies aside, the 90s (into the early Millennium) represented two phases of Madonna in which this set could have easily been split in half. For creative purposes, the decision was made to let it evolve from one end to the other. The Shep Pettibone era gave way to William Orbit who transcended Junior Vasquez and ultimately gave way to Victor Calderone and Peter Rauhofer (who would later go on to be important staples of Madonna's dancefloor rule). This was no easy feat for me to tackle, which is one of the main reasons why I took so much time off before releasing these sets. For the most part, I allowed these songs to flow as they were originally intended with a few exceptions. There's no doubt that Junior Vasquez was a brilliant DJ, producer, and remixer. However, not unlike some of his contemporaries at the time (David Morales, Tony Moran, and Frankie Knuckles) — he tended to go off into the wilderness in his drops or even his intros to the point that sometimes they felt disconnected from the source material. Consequently, "Bedtime Story" received a course correction and was edited down for clarity. "Secret" was as well but to a lesser extent where the drop was cut in half by overlapping two segments giving it a bit more purpose in the overall landscape of the song. The same was done with "Human Nature" because Danny Tenaglia dragged his otherwise brilliant Human Club Mix a bit longer than necessary. Otherwise, any editing in these songs was strictly minor and generally unnoticeable.

Aisle 9's career has spanned over 3 decades working in the UK as a producer. Born way back in the….wait for it…Summer of 69. Worked with hundreds of artists from all genres, starting off with the trance, rave, and festival scene of the late 90s and moving through to playing in guitar-driven original bands in the alt-rock and grunge scene of the early 00s. Now partly driven on by the pandemic, he has finally returned to producing his own music once again. His influences are as diverse as Mitch Murder, New Order, Tangerine Dream, The Midnight, Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Orbital, and William Orbit to name but a few. An accomplished songwriter, sound engineer, and musician, his music style incorporates lush synths, filtered funky guitars, treated samples, text to speech voices, vocoders, driving bass, and killer grooves. Mark and Kenny dive deep - no, really deep - in a warts-and-all conversation about the complicated and confounding final single from Ray of Light. Topics include the musical clash between Marius de Vries and William Orbit, the return of Niki Haris and Donna DeLory, a spin around the East Village with Kruder & Dorfmeister, building an entire video around a literary pseudonym, the one subject that still upsets Madonna, Kenny works out with Rupert Everett, and a winning visit to the Grammy Awards. PLUS, Kenny and Mark unearth and endlessly unpack the true Madonna biopic - the 1998 VH1 special (and essential) Madonna Rising. There's even a cameo by Larry King. Mark and Kenny swim to the ocean floor with a deep dive into the career of William Orbit as well as the apocalyptic, riff-filled second track from Ray of Light. Topics include Orbit's Strange Cargo series, composer Samuel Barber, Torch Song, Laurie Mayer, All Saints and The Beach soundtrack, Gianni Versace, Beth Orton's Central Reservation, Britney Spears' Britney Jean, Blur's 13, David Cronenberg's CRASH and the inspiring novelist JG Ballard. After making fans wait nearly four years, Madonna delivers what may prove to be her first true blue rock album Ray of Light and commences with a moody ballad (co-written with new collaborator William Orbit) of new credos and fresh religions. Meanwhile, Kenny and Mark tie up a lot of loose threads as we head into the “Spiritual Girl” era and celebrate the inspiring return of Pat Leonard. Topics include: Animal Kingdom, the MTV and those pesky VMA, Kurts Loder and Cobain, Prodigy, Britney Spears, Princess Diana, Beck, Maverick Records, the Pre-Madonna album and “Crimes of Passion”, Jose & Luis, Elizabeth Taylor & Shirley Maclaine, Yoga & Gwenyth Paltrow, Rick Nowels, Rob Sheffield, San Sebastian Strings, Water Stern, the poetry of David Collins (RIP), Courtney Love and HOLE, BT&Sasha, Kenny's writing chum Nathan Parker, the Rolling Stone Women In Rock September 1997 issue, and the realization that Madonna is really starting to chill out in London. (https://www.vega.dk/kalender/terese-24-03-22/) Varighed: 7:49
"My real gift is arrangement." William Orbit opens up on his 40-year career. Share Born in Hackney, London, in 1956, Orbit has been writing, producing and arranging music for four decades. With almost 1,200 credits to his name on Discogs, his vast and varied body of work spans classical, pop and electronic. He produced for some of pop music's most seminal artists—Madonna, All Saints, Blur, Robbie Williams, Pink—as well as being, as his interviewer Matt McDermott explains, "one of the most prolific electronic music remixers of the '90s." He released 11 solo albums and seven collaborative albums—as part of Torch Song, Strange Cargo and Bassomatic—and founded Guerilla Studios in the '80s, working with artists like Cabaret Voltaire and Gary Numan. In 1995, Orbit released the Pieces In A Modern Style LP, which paved the way for musicians like Nils Frahm and Jon Hopkins, who bring together classical arrangements with electronic production in revelatory ways. The journalist Kate Hutchinson described Orbit as "the Mark Ronson or Jack Antonoff of his day." But as this conversation with RA highlights, Orbit is once again enjoying his day. Having, in his own words, "spent 20 years becoming disengaged," he has just put out his first solo release in seven years—the Sunbeam EP on Anjunadeep—and things are feeling good. "I know how to have fun," he said. In conversation with McDermott, Orbit shares stories about his fascinating career, how to make a great record, working with Madonna and how to stay relevant in a fickle industry.
