Whether you're a music lover or just looking for motivation to keep pursuing what brings you joy, this is a conversation you won't want to miss. You can find me in the following places: JenHardy.net Facebook Instagram LinkedIn ABOUT RON Best known for his role as Music Director of Mountain Stage, the internationally acclaimed radio show, Ron Sowell is also a dynamic singer-songwriter, guitar & harmonica player, performer and producer. Growing up on the high deserts of Roswell, New Mexico. Ron dedicated his early years to sports and music. He learned to sing by mimicking his dad's high tenor in church and he played a mean third base for his state champion Little League team. At age 13 his life was altered forever when his mother bought him a guitar and lessons at a local music store. Buoyed by her encouragement and the revelation that "girls dig it" Ron played "till his fingers hurt" in a series of rock bands and folk groups. In high school he was crushed by the realization (and several NFL-sized linebackers) that at 5'8" and 155 pounds, a professional sports career was not in his future. So, heading off to college with a scholarship to sing in the choir in his pocket, Ron dove headlong into developing his musical skills. It was there that he began writing songs. After graduation from Eastern New Mexico University, he hit the road playing clubs and coffee houses. Four years later on a brief visit to the beautiful hills of West Virginia it felt "so right" that he unloaded his car and began putting down roots. There he formed two critically acclaimed bands "The Putnam County Pickers" and "Stark Raven" with whom he recorded four albums and clocked thousands of miles touring across the US, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Crete, Ethiopia and Greenland. About the same time Ron joined a fledgling local radio show called Mountain Stage as the resident guitar player eventually rising to the position of music director. Starting with a handful of local radio stations, Mountain Stage is now heard on almost 300 stations nationwide on NPR. As a member of the Mountain Stage Band he has played with a wide array of artists ranging from Sarah McLachlan, Lyle Lovette & Maria Muldaur to The Band, REM, Dr John & Nora Jones. "Dance Till the Music Stops" marks the release of his 4th solo album.

In the late 90's, Sarah McLachlan was fed up with radio and promoters saying you couldn't put 2 female artists back-to-back in airplay, or together on tour. She changed all of that with the invention of Lilith Fair. We explore the balance between leading and supporting in musical settings, the concept of playing to the song, and the importance of knowing when to “drive the bus” versus when to defer.Listeners will also hear stories of Matt's studies with legendary drumming figures Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, and Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, the lasting influence of the Moller technique on his sound and stamina, and how those lessons continue to shape his teaching and performance today.Whether you're a drummer or love hearing about the craft of making music, this conversation is packed with insight, humility, and inspiration. To learn more about Matt, visit his website. Throughout my career as a sociologist, I have come to the conclusion that people find sociologists annoying on a deeply personal level. Anthropologists have great stories about travelling to exotic locations. People seem to really appreciate psychology because they think it helps them to better understand why people do the things they do. Historians, while might be boring with their details and minutiae of past events, at least have something to help carry a conversation at a party. Perhaps the only other truly annoying academic profession are philosophers, but they may spend more time talking to themselves than other people. What makes sociologists annoying, in my opinion as a sociologist, is that we think critically all the time about everything. It is not just how we are trained; it is how we are wired. You could show a sociologist a picture of puppies playing in a field, and the sociologist would talk about the perils of puppy mills. You could assure the sociologist that these are from a rescue, and the sociologist would talk about there is a lack of oversight and regulation of these organizations and the emotional manipulation of Sarah McLachlan commercials. You could assure the sociologist that this in fact is a wonderful animal rescue, and the sociologist will talk about how veterinary services in the United States cost more than in other parts of the world, and then launch into a discussion of the lack of healthcare overall. We are exhausting. But the critical thinking element is nevertheless important, because through critical thinking and critical analysis, progress and improvements can be made. The person who joins me today on Experience by Design is neither a sociologist nor annoying, but is a critical thinker and thought leader in his field. Andrew Carothers has had a long career in customer experience, and has some perspectives to share about its past, present, and future. In his opinion, customer experience is in its teenage years, a kind of awkward adolescence where it is trying to find its identity. In finding its way, it also has to find ways to define its importance and relevance to organizational success and culture. We talk about the need for CX to go beyond the metrics it has, but also find other metrics that matter. Andrew discusses the need to put CX more centrally into strategy. We also explore the implications of artificial intelligence for customer experience as a feature and a profession. Andrew emphasizes that good enough is often good enough, especially if that is all that customers want. Finally, we explore how keeping customers is easier than getting customers, and that CX can provide the path to do so, but only if it continues to grow up. On today's all new episode of the cast, we look at the plethora of female singer-songwriters that dominated on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks back in the day, and talk about at how their influence paved the way for future singer-songwriters to set the tone and edge for what was to come down the road. We discuss at how Sarah McLachlan got her start on the chart, and how she spearheaded the female revolution with the creation of the Lilith Fair in the late 90's that ushered in a renaissance and a breath of creative fresh air that dominated for most of the 90's. We mention other artists including Natalie Merchant, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette, and even Sheryl Crow who dominated in a big way on this chart before she crossed over and had success on the pop chart. We also talk about the shifting tides of music, and how radio programmers instituted sexist policies that eliminated all female singer-songwriters from alternative radio for most of the late 90's and all of the 2000's before slowly coming back in the 2010's. I also play you a lsong from Boston's Til' Tuesday and their huge hit "Voices Carry".
Hocus Focus Mix met Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Keinemusik, Adam Port, &ME, Chuala, Beyoncé, Stardust, Delerium, Sarah McLachlan, John Summit, Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding
This week, we celebrate songs from the amazing roster of female artists who were a part of the Lilith Fair touring festival during its run between the summers of 1997 and 1999. The Lilith Fair was co-founded by Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan after experiencing woes with concert promoters booking female artists and battling general sexism in the music business. Taking its name from the Jewish biblical origin story that Lilith was Adam's first wife who refused to bow down to his every whim, the Lilith Fair became a huge success, highlighting a rotating lineup of talent at every stop. Joining us for this discussion is Sarah Seltzer, longtime executive editor at Lilith Magazine and now the author of her first novel, The Singer Sisters, on Flatiron Books (the Little Brown Book Group in the UK). About The Singer Sisters: It's 1996, and alt-rocker Emma Cantor is on tour, with her sights trained on a record deal. Emma's got no lack of inspiration for her confessional songs, chief among them her mother Judie, a 1960s folk legend who is bitterly disappointed by Emma's choice to skip college. Emma is baffled by Judie's coldness. Judie herself was only eighteen when she ran away to New York to pursue music, ahead of forming the influential folk duo the Singer Sisters with her sister Sylvia. But Judie has a long-kept secret about why she abandoned her music career at the peak of her success, which is about to unravel. This is an epic family saga that follows mother Judie and daughter Emma as they navigate the ups and downs of music stardom - asking what women artists must sacrifice for success.
