Romancing The Scams With A Fake 49ers Star

The Rizzuto Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2026 39:14

Today we're diving into an absolutely wild romance scam involving a man accused of pretending to be a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver—or, depending on the day, an ultra-wealthy Swiss real estate mogul. Authorities say the four-year scheme targeted at least 26 women and brought in roughly $1.3 million. Apparently dating apps weren't stressful enough already. The details only get crazier. The alleged scam included social media accounts packed with 49ers gear, luxury cars and images designed to make the whole thing look legitimate. According to the story discussed on the show, some of the online material was AI-generated, and the fake identity became established enough online that search engines and AI tools reportedly started treating the guy like an actual football player. Then comes the fake wealth. Screenshots supposedly showed bank and investment accounts containing millions of dollars, and once relationships were established, an alleged accomplice would enter the picture as the “wealth manager.” Three-way calls, fake investment returns and promises of high-yield opportunities followed. When victims ran out of money or started asking questions? Suddenly their extremely successful NFL boyfriend became extremely unavailable. It launches the crew into a bigger conversation about romance scams, our weird relationship with wealth and just how easy it has become to manufacture an impressive-looking life online. Rafe points out that you barely need a real podcast anymore—you can film yourself in front of a microphone, dispense some motivational nonsense and convince the internet you've appeared on 400 episodes of something called The Alpha Wealth Mindset Experience.Okay, we made that title up. But you've absolutely seen that guy.Listeners pile on with stories of fake celebrities allegedly trying to scam people, including Martina McBride and Mark Harmon impersonators. If Mark Harmon suddenly slides into Mom's Facebook messages and needs $700 in gift cards, maybe call somebody. That's the kind of public service you only get from a funny podcast with absolutely no qualifications to provide public services. The show also tackles the old belief that celebrity deaths happen in threes and why our brains are so desperate to find patterns in random events. From there, we discover Goodwill is getting into the record-store business with a media-focused concept called Rewind. Vinyl, CDs, cassettes, VHS tapes, vintage audio gear and whatever forgotten three-disc CD changer somebody's mom finally convinced Dad to get out of the basement. It might be heaven. It might smell like somebody else's basement. Either way, we're interested. Then it's time for Crap on Celebrities, where things get wonderfully messy. The crew gets into music and entertainment news, including Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields Festival, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette and Stevie Nicks. That naturally becomes a debate over “Landslide,” including Lern's discovery that apparently nothing evacuates a Colorado bar faster than putting it on the jukebox. There's also Scott Weiland material headed for release, more Korn vinyl reissues, Limp Bizkit joining Spotify's billion-stream club and the continuing realization that the music of our youth is now getting 30th-anniversary editions. Awesome. Love having time itself personally attack us.Elsewhere, an 85-year-old Donna Mills is reportedly making serious money on OnlyFans without full nudity, which sends Rafe into an impromptu financial analysis of the subscription business model. This is technically economics if nobody from an accredited university is listening. The entertainment chaos continues with Coyote vs. Acme, a creepy movie called Buddy that basically asks what would happen if a beloved children's mascot completely snapped, and news of Tom Cruise returning as Cole Trickle for a Days of Thunder sequel alongside Anne Hathaway. The crew also discovers a movie about the creation of Hooters is in development, accidentally invents an entirely different restaurant concept during the conversation, and immediately starts yelling “trademark” because apparently that's how intellectual property law works now. Finally, we get famous musicians trashing other famous musicians. Jack White versus The Black Keys. Madonna versus Lady Gaga. Elton John versus Madonna. Kurt Cobain versus seemingly everybody. Courtney Love versus Taylor Swift. Nick Cave versus the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And Usher telling T-Pain that Auto-Tune messed up music.Nothing brings people together quite like extremely successful artists explaining why other extremely successful artists are terrible.Fake NFL stars. AI-generated lifestyles. Romance scams. KISS Army business. Celebrity impostors. Vinyl nostalgia. Music feuds. OnlyFans economics. Tom Cruise going racing again. And an alarming amount of discussion about Hooters. It's another funny podcast from The Rizzuto Show, where we examine the important stories of our time and then immediately ruin any chance of being taken seriously.Listen now, subscribe, and come back for more celebrity news, weird stories, pop culture commentary, St. Louis humor and daily chaos from Rizz and the gang.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The women who built Lilith Fair were called "angry," "hysterical," "emotional," and dismissed as "a bunch of lesbians" back in the 90s. Turns out Sarah McLachlan and her all-female lineup were way ahead of their time, running the highest grossing tour of 1997. Now the concept is back, and leading the charge is Olivia Rodrigo, using her platform to advocate for women's rights. This is a fun, fascinating, and timely look at how right those women were, and why the fight just picked up way more steam. About This Episode: In this episode, Phil sits down with Marla Torgerson, a Calgary-based singer-songwriter and classically trained vocalist who has written and performs her debut theatrical work, Sinner, a one-woman musical tragic comedy about growing up in the evangelical Bible Belt of central Alberta and the long, often painful process of leaving fundamentalist religion behind. What starts as a conversation about a show becomes a wide-ranging, deeply personal discussion between two people who have both done the hard work of deconstructing their faith and are still finding new layers to unpack. This episode explores: How Marla went from singer-songwriter and opera graduate to writing her debut solo theatrical work over eight years The specific moment that cracked open her deconstruction, and why she frames Sinner as breaking up with white Jesus rather than religion broadly Why evangelical culture treats men and women differently, and how the Proverbs 31 woman ideal is actually a subversive power structure The prosperity gospel, megachurches, and why Marla argues that being rich is evidence of a lack of faith And much more! W/C 15th June 2026Toyah took me to the Beatles, and the Beatles took me to Sarah McLachlan.(Of course it starts with a Apple TV box-set, but that will become obvious as you listen to this weeks episode…)It could so easily have been Toyah, as ‘It's a Mystery' is one of the earliest chart tunes I can remember being fixated on (thinking about it, if you throw in Prince Charming and Stand & Deliver, it does explain a lot). And whilst it ain't the greatest of the Fabs catalogue, I do love the way the drums kick back in after the break in MMT.But Sarah gets the nod this week, it's a classic tune and she is an amazing artist. In fact if you have never listened to Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, then you have a treat on store.Stay safe.Building A Mystery - Sarah McLachanTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Thanks for getting this far.

We unpack the incredible voice work of the legendary main cast, featuring Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Cast Away) bringing timeless charm to the cowboy Sheriff Woody, Tim Allen (The Santa Clause, Home Improvement) as the iconic space ranger Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack (Working Girl, In & Out) delivering massive emotional depth as the cowgirl Jessie. We also highlight the stellar supporting performances from Kelsey Grammer (Frasier, Cheers) as Stinky Pete the Prospector, Wayne Knight (Seinfeld, Jurassic Park) as the obsessive Al McWhiggin of Al's Toy Barn, and Don Rickles (Casino) as Mr. Potato Head. Our hosts react to all the brilliant themes of replacement and obsolescence, noting how the threat of being replaced by a shiny new toy hits differently as adults in a world facing shifts like artificial intelligence. We break down the epic, Star Wars-inspired Buzz Lightyear video game opening, the immense tension of the yard sale rescue mission, and the incredibly satisfying artistry of the old toy restorer perfectly repairing Woody's arm. Paige opens up about deeply relating to Jessie's fear of the dark and abandonment after being left in a storage box, diving into the pure heartbreak of Sarah McLachlan's classic "When She Loved Me" montage. We also discuss the legendary production trivia of how a mistyped command almost completely deleted the movie's files from the Pixar server, only to be saved by supervising technical director Galen Susman on maternity leave before the team completely remade the entire plot from scratch in just nine months. Stick around until the end as we break down our personal favorite childhood toys—including Tech Deck trick boarders, 25-cent sticky hands, and anti-gravity boots—alongside a fun side tangent on Paige's legendary "spaghetti pie" recipe and Greg's current preparation for an upcoming Spartan race! The Rizzuto Show proudly presents another episode that somehow starts with the Hindenburg disaster and ends with Bob Seger rankings, proving once again that this funny podcast is held together with duct tape, caffeine, and questionable decision-making.Rizz and the gang kick things off talking about local BMX hero and X Games champion Zack Warden ahead of the Show Me BMX Jam at Four Hands. What begins as a wholesome STL success story immediately spirals into everyone remembering how they once thought they could do BMX tricks before realizing gravity exists and hospital bills are expensive. Then things take a historical turn when the crew revisits the legendary Hindenburg disaster broadcast from 1937. The original radio coverage still hits like a truck, and the gang breaks down why hearing genuine emotion on-air was such a massive moment in broadcasting history. Somehow this turns into a discussion about how modern media has basically turned everybody into full-time catastrophe consumers. So… uplifting stuff.Elsewhere in this daily podcast, Lern's mom desperately searches New York City for Mick Jagger while accidentally missing him entirely, the crew debates whether concert ticket prices have officially become criminal activity, and everyone collectively roasts the Missouri State Fair lineup while Illinois quietly flexes on them with a way better roster. Sorry, Missouri. We still love you. Mostly. The gang also dives into misunderstood songs that people somehow turned into wedding classics despite the lyrics being deeply depressing. Turns out “Every Breath You Take” is not romantic, “Semi-Charmed Life” is very much about meth, and “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan absolutely ruined animal shelter commercials forever.Lern introduces the show to Castle Rat — a medieval fantasy doom metal band featuring chainmail, underboob armor, plague doctors, and enough theatrical nonsense to immediately earn the crew's respect. Honestly, if your band doesn't have a dedicated Rat Queen at this point, what are you even doing? Then it's time for a full-on Bob Seger birthday celebration as the crew debates his greatest songs, from “Night Moves” to “Against the Wind” to the inescapable wedding anthem “Old Time Rock and Roll.” Rafe practically turns into a Bob Seger historian while everyone else realizes they know way more Seger songs than they thought. You'll also get Seinfeld episode rankings, AMC's bizarre new live concert theater experiment, Anthony Bourdain movie talk, celebrity chaos, weird news, hilarious fails, and approximately 47 moments that would absolutely confuse anyone listening out of context. In other words: a completely normal episode of your favorite daily comedy show and your favorite comedy podcast from St. Louis.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Apologue Podcast

What do you get when you combine two Canadian music lifers into one guitar-heavy power-pop unit that still believes in volume, melody, and sweat? You get SLIP~ons. Fronted by Brock Pytel of Montreal pop-punk staples Doughboys and anchored by Brian Minato, longtime bassist for Sarah McLachlan, the Vancouver four-piece make rock music the honest way. Plug in. Turn it up. Let it rip. Their sophomore EP Overtime arrives February 20, 2026 via Scamindy. SLIP~ons aim straight for the sweet spot where 90s alternative heft meets power-pop immediacy. Think Sugar-era Bob Mould muscle, Hüsker Dü urgency, and the loose confidence of The Replacements, with flashes of Ash and Dinosaur Jr. in the guitar tones. Rounded out by Rob “Shockk” Matharu of The Spitfires on guitar and Shane Wilson on drums, the band plays with instinct and economy. Nothing is overthought. Everything hits when it's supposed to. Overtime takes its title from the sudden-death hockey period, used here as an extended metaphor for pressure, consequence, and the moment when everything sharpens. The EP leans heavier and more focused than the band's debut, pairing Pytel's gravel-edged vocals with punchy, direct arrangements that waste zero time. The lyrics widen their scope too. Politics surface naturally, filtered through experience rather than slogans. As Pytel puts it, “I made it all the way through side A without a single song about a breakup.” The shift is subtle but intentional, and it gives the record real weight. The EP was recorded by John Raham at Afterlife, formerly Mushroom Studios, a room steeped in Canadian music history. Raham's resume includes work with Frazey Ford, Dan Mangan, Tanya Tagaq, Destroyer, and Pharis, and his approach here keeps the performances immediate while giving the songs room to move. Mixing duties were handled by Dave Ogilvie of Skinny Puppy, whose touch adds grit and tension without sanding off the edges. Overtime was mastered by Ronan Chris Murphy, whose work spans artists such as King Crimson, Ulver, and Gwar, bringing clarity and punch while preserving the EP's raw, guitar-forward bite. On this episode of 90's NOW, Kelly & Sharon break down the newly announced Songwriters Hall of Fame Class of 2026, featuring Kenny Loggins, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, Alanis Morissette, legendary producer Walter Afanasieff and Taylor Swift, who becomes the second-youngest songwriter ever inducted. (The youngest remains Stevie Wonder, inducted at age 33 in 1983.) Kelly & Sharon also discuss the notable omissions from this year's list, including Sarah McLachlan, P!nk, LL Cool J, and Kelly's all-time fave Janet Jackson - and share their thoughts on who they believe deserves future recognition. The conversation then turns to the surprising legal dispute between longtime collaborators Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, whose partnership helped define hits for Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, Jay-Z, and their own group N.E.R.D. What led to the split and why is it so unsettling to see two music icons at odds. Plus, AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys explains why he prefers to go by Alex when he's not performing, sparking a discussion about artist personas and mental health. We also cover Harry Styles' return to music, including a new single, album and tour, with Shania Twain set to open his London shows - and reflect on Sheryl Crow previously opening for P!nk on tour. This week's listener question: Who would you like to see inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame next? Wrap things up with Kelly's Trivia and a trip back to 1990 in Sharon's 90's Rewind.
