What do you get when you combine two Canadian music lifers into one guitar-heavy power-pop unit that still believes in volume, melody, and sweat? You get SLIP~ons. Fronted by Brock Pytel of Montreal pop-punk staples Doughboys and anchored by Brian Minato, longtime bassist for Sarah McLachlan, the Vancouver four-piece make rock music the honest way. Plug in. Turn it up. Let it rip. Their sophomore EP Overtime arrives February 20, 2026 via Scamindy. SLIP~ons aim straight for the sweet spot where 90s alternative heft meets power-pop immediacy. Think Sugar-era Bob Mould muscle, Hüsker Dü urgency, and the loose confidence of The Replacements, with flashes of Ash and Dinosaur Jr. in the guitar tones. Rounded out by Rob “Shockk” Matharu of The Spitfires on guitar and Shane Wilson on drums, the band plays with instinct and economy. Nothing is overthought. Everything hits when it's supposed to. Overtime takes its title from the sudden-death hockey period, used here as an extended metaphor for pressure, consequence, and the moment when everything sharpens. The EP leans heavier and more focused than the band's debut, pairing Pytel's gravel-edged vocals with punchy, direct arrangements that waste zero time. The lyrics widen their scope too. Politics surface naturally, filtered through experience rather than slogans. As Pytel puts it, “I made it all the way through side A without a single song about a breakup.” The shift is subtle but intentional, and it gives the record real weight. The EP was recorded by John Raham at Afterlife, formerly Mushroom Studios, a room steeped in Canadian music history. Raham's resume includes work with Frazey Ford, Dan Mangan, Tanya Tagaq, Destroyer, and Pharis, and his approach here keeps the performances immediate while giving the songs room to move. Mixing duties were handled by Dave Ogilvie of Skinny Puppy, whose touch adds grit and tension without sanding off the edges. Overtime was mastered by Ronan Chris Murphy, whose work spans artists such as King Crimson, Ulver, and Gwar, bringing clarity and punch while preserving the EP's raw, guitar-forward bite. This week Nick talks to Paul McDadePaul has over 35 years of international experience in the oil and gas industry, with nearly two decades as COO and CEO of Tullow Oil. He helped transform the company into a FTSE 100 business, driving growth across Africa, including the development of Ghana's Jubilee field and major M&A activity. He holds a Master's in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.Nick and Paul discuss Paul's early life in Glasgow and his route into the oil and gas industry, including studying petroleum engineering at Imperial College and working in the North Sea, Colombia and Kuwait. Paul describes being taken hostage during the Gulf War, which he reflects on as a formative personal experience. He later became CEO, managing the company through major challenges including oil price crashes, debt, asset disputes and mechanical issues, focusing on strengthening the balance sheet and maintaining investor confidence. Nick and Paul also discuss Paul's return to the industry after retirement, founding Afentra to invest in mature oil assets in Angola and support Africa's energy transition. On this episode of 90's NOW, Kelly & Sharon break down the newly announced Songwriters Hall of Fame Class of 2026, featuring Kenny Loggins, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, Alanis Morissette, legendary producer Walter Afanasieff and Taylor Swift, who becomes the second-youngest songwriter ever inducted. (The youngest remains Stevie Wonder, inducted at age 33 in 1983.) Kelly & Sharon also discuss the notable omissions from this year's list, including Sarah McLachlan, P!nk, LL Cool J, and Kelly's all-time fave Janet Jackson - and share their thoughts on who they believe deserves future recognition. The conversation then turns to the surprising legal dispute between longtime collaborators Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, whose partnership helped define hits for Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, Jay-Z, and their own group N.E.R.D. What led to the split and why is it so unsettling to see two music icons at odds. Plus, AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys explains why he prefers to go by Alex when he's not performing, sparking a discussion about artist personas and mental health. We also cover Harry Styles' return to music, including a new single, album and tour, with Shania Twain set to open his London shows - and reflect on Sheryl Crow previously opening for P!nk on tour. This week's listener question: Who would you like to see inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame next? Wrap things up with Kelly's Trivia and a trip back to 1990 in Sharon's 90's Rewind. We've all been in the right place at the right time.   For me, one of those times was to be hosting and producing MuchWest in Vancouver when Sarah McLachlan moved from Halifax to Vancouver to begin what would become an amazing career. Sarah ended up on the West Coast because in Halifax,  her home,  she had opened for a band from Nettwerk Records in Kitsilano. They wanted to sign her immediately, but Sarah's parents insisted she finish her schooling. It felt like she came to Vancouver with songs already written and ready to go. It wasn't long before  Sarah released her debut album Touch. That's when I first met and interviewed her.   The gift she gave the world was songs cutting deep into memory and self-awareness. Since 1989, the gift she's given me was to tell part of the story through our interviews.   That's one of the reasons why I asked Sarah to come to Thailand and Cambodia with me in 1991 to tell the story of World Vision's battle with the aids epidemic.   Sarah is on record as saying the journey changed her life. It helped her understand the power of giving back. It also leads directly to her involvement with the Sarah McLachlan School of Music. Some of our interviews showed up in the Lilith Fair Documentary. It's been 11 years since Sarah recorded and released new music. Her new album is called Better Broken. We'll talk about a lot of things.  Better Broken,  Motherhood, today's music world and her place in it, the legacy of Lilith, the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th anniversary  Tour and Canada – O Canada.

Mark interviews Meaghan Smith about the new children's book IT SNOWED that she wrote and illustrated, which was inspired by her popular holiday song of the same name. This Juno-Award winning singer-songwriter shares her many creative passions for music, writing, and art. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a personal update and a word about this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by an affiliate link to Manuscript Report. Use code MARK10 at checkout and save 10% off your own personalized report. In their interview, Mark and Meaghan talk about: The origin of Meaghan's song "It Snowed" and how quickly it came together once the inspiration struck her on wanting a seasonal holiday song for people who might not celebrate Christmas One of Meaghan's favorite things about the snow How this song has gone on to become one of her most popular songs and now it's a picture book Studying animation at Sheridan College and the ongoing art that Meaghan has been creating all of her life The voice recording for an animation project in a studio in college that led to others recognizing her singing voice and an eventual career as a musician Meghan's experience in "if you just show up" and try something, things can have a way of working out Painting in the hotel rooms and green rooms while traveling as a musician as a way to alleviate her anxiety The additional stationery line that Meghan has which includes greeting cards How the manager of Woozles bookstore in Halifax asked Meaghan if she ever considered writing a book Getting better at accepting things without needing them to be perfect The "grumpy little cat" who is present throughout Meaghan's IT SNOWED book How snow can be such an interesting substance and the way Meaghan wanted to capture all the magic of it in her book How the book follows the lyrics of Meaghan's song, but also goes through the entire day for the kids in the story The way snow can make us all feel like kids again Meghan's current bread-and-butter writing custom songs for people  The Christmas concert Meaghan is doing Dec 19th and 20th in Halifax The second book Meaghan is working on for Nimbus based on a song she wrote for her baby when he was still inside her body How Meaghan divides up her work day and the various creative forms of expression that she exercises And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on Meaghan's multiple creative outlets and the various ways that authors, artists, poets, musicians can give a gift to the world born from their inspiration and passion.   Links of Interest: Meaghan Smith (Website) It Snowed (Picture Book) Meaghan Smith: The Holiday Show (2025 - Halifax, NS) Friday Night Tickets (Fri Dec 19, 2025) Saturday Matinee Tickets (Sat Dec 20, 2025) Meaghan's OUR SONG "Wonder Woman" - An example of an OUR SONG written and performed by Meaghan Smith and Jason Mingo inspired by Liz Anderson Woozles Bookstore (Halifax, NS) EP 146 - Finding Yourself in Our Song by Meaghan Smith Manuscript Report (Mark's affiliate link - use MARK10 to save 10%) Buy Mark a Coffee Patreon for Stark Reflections Mark's YouTube channel ElevenLabs (AI Voice Generation - Affiliate link) Mark's Stark Reflections on Writing & Publishing Newsletter (Signup) An Author's Guide to Working With Bookstores and Libraries The Relaxed Author Buy eBook Direct Buy Audiobook Direct Publishing Pitfalls for Authors An Author's Guide to Working with Libraries & Bookstores Wide for the Win Mark's Canadian Werewolf Books This Time Around (Short Story) A Canadian Werewolf in New York Stowe Away (Novella) Fear and Longing in Los Angeles Fright Nights, Big City Lover's Moon Hex and the City Only Monsters in the Building The Canadian Mounted: A Trivia Guide to Planes, Trains and Automobiles Yippee Ki-Yay Motherf*cker: A Trivia Guide to Die Hard Merry Christmas! Shitter Was Full!: A Trivia Guide to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation I Think It's A Sign That The Pun Also Rises   Meaghan Smith is a JUNO Award-winning musician, visual artist, and storyteller whose creative life bridges the worlds of music and fine art. Born in London, Ontario—known as The Forest City—Meaghan grew up drawing and exploring the woods and fields near her home. Her love of art led her to study classical animation at Sheridan College, later working as a storyboard artist before shifting her focus to music. That leap brought her to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she now lives with her husBand, producer and songwriter Jason Mingo, and their two sons. Over the past 20 years, Meaghan has built a multifaceted creative career. As a musician signed to Warner Brothers Records, she toured internationally, sharing stages with artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Chapman, Ron Sexsmith, and k.d. lang. Her debut album The Cricket's Orchestra earned her the 2011 JUNO Award for Best New Artist, multiple East Coast Music Awards, and a Polaris Prize nomination. Her song Mirror, from her sophomore album Have a Heart, was a semifinalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Today, Meaghan continues to release collections of music characterized by her sweetly smoky vocals and vintage pop sensibility. Her songs have appeared widely across film and television—on platforms ranging from Netflix to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Through her company Our Song, she and Jason write and produce custom songs for individuals and special occasions, helping others tell their stories through music. While her music career flourished, Meaghan also found her way back to visual art. On tour, she began painting tiny oil portraits of the forest animals she missed from home—foxes in fedoras, bears in flower crowns, fish in monocles—each one nestled in a miniature vintage frame she found in antique shops along the way. What began as a creative escape in hotel rooms and green rooms evolved into her acclaimed Miniature Art Show, with over 500 original paintings sold worldwide and exhibits in galleries such as Galerie d'Art Charlevoix in Quebec. Using oils on heavyweight paper, Meaghan's paintings capture the personality and soul of her subjects with vivid detail and a playful sense of nostalgia. Her art celebrates the small wonders of the natural world and invites viewers to see beauty in the quiet, whimsical corners of life. In addition to her paintings, Meaghan owns and operates M. Kind Papersmith, a small stationery studio based out of her home in Halifax. The line focuses on locally printed, hand-folded greeting cards designed to help people stay in touch and spread a little kindness through the mail. Each card reflects her signature warmth and attention to detail, combining her love of illustration with her belief that connection matters. Meaghan recently signed a publishing deal with Nimbus Publishing, the renowned East Coast publisher, for her holiday hit It Snowed. Having created the illustrations herself in coloured pencil, she now proudly adds published author and illustrator to her creative credits. Though she has illustrated works for other authors, It Snowed marks the first book she has both written and illustrated from her own material. Alongside her art and music, Meaghan leads Creativity Through Songwriting Workshops, coaching others to unlock their creative potential through the songwriting process. Now based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Meaghan continues to paint, write, and make music—working to incorporate creativity, family, and an ever-evolving artistic life that celebrates imagination in all its forms.   The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast ("Laser Groove") was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

Today you have the opportunity to sit down (virtually) with musical icon Ron Sowell—a singer, songwriter, producer, and longtime musical director of Mountain Stage, NPR's legendary music show now running for over four decades. Ron opens up about his eclectic musical journey from Roswell, New Mexico to West Virginia, sharing stories of backing up artists of every genre and collaborating with some of his biggest musical heroes. In this candid conversation, Ron discusses his latest album—conceived during the long days of the lockdown—and explores the philosophy behind his uplifting song "It's All Up To You," which celebrates the idea that while aging is inevitable, getting old is optional. The episode dives into the heart and humor of pursuing creative passion later in life, the joy of connecting with audiences, and how Mountain Stage has exposed him to a stunning variety of music from across the globe. Whether you're a music lover or just looking for motivation to keep pursuing what brings you joy, this is a conversation you won't want to miss. Stick around—links to Ron's music and more are included in the show notes, so you can experience his work for yourself!   Thank you for joining me today! I'm having a blast creating Fabulous Over 50 & it would be an honor to have you share it with someone who would enjoy it. Thank you! Want more? Go to the website and you'll find many ways to live your best life over 50! I'd love to hear what you think about this episode, and what you'd like to hear about in the future. Send me a message HERE. Have a blessed week, Jen   In the beginning of this episode, I talk about kidsy.co, my new discovery for affordable, quality, baby products for those adorable grandchildren! Check it out if you have children or grandchildren. You are going to find some incredible discounts! And as you know, I love finding quality things, but I don't like paying retail prices. You can find me in the following places: JenHardy.net Facebook Instagram LinkedIn     ABOUT RON Best known for his role as Music Director of Mountain Stage, the internationally acclaimed radio show, Ron Sowell is also a dynamic singer-songwriter, guitar & harmonica player, performer and producer. Growing up on the high deserts of Roswell, New Mexico. Ron dedicated his early years to sports and music. He learned to sing by mimicking his dad's high tenor in church and he played a mean third base for his state champion Little League team. At age 13 his life was altered forever when his mother bought him a guitar and lessons at a local music store. Buoyed by her encouragement and the revelation that "girls dig it" Ron played "till his fingers hurt" in a series of rock bands and folk groups. In high school he was crushed by the realization (and several NFL-sized linebackers) that at 5'8" and 155 pounds, a professional sports career was not in his future. So, heading off to college with a scholarship to sing in the choir in his pocket, Ron dove headlong into developing his musical skills. It was there that he began writing songs. After graduation from Eastern New Mexico University, he hit the road playing clubs and coffee houses. Four years later on a brief visit to the beautiful hills of West Virginia it felt "so right" that he unloaded his car and began putting down roots. There he formed two critically acclaimed bands "The Putnam County Pickers" and "Stark Raven" with whom he recorded four albums and clocked thousands of miles touring across the US, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Crete, Ethiopia and Greenland. About the same time Ron joined a fledgling local radio show called Mountain Stage as the resident guitar player eventually rising to the position of music director. Starting with a handful of local radio stations, Mountain Stage is now heard on almost 300 stations nationwide on NPR. As a member of the Mountain Stage Band he has played with a wide array of artists ranging from Sarah McLachlan, Lyle Lovette & Maria Muldaur to The Band, REM, Dr John & Nora Jones.  "Dance Till the Music Stops" marks the release of his 4th solo album.
