Taking over a family machine shop is never just a business decision. It's personal. In this episode of Machine Shop Mastery, I sit down with Nubia Perez of Gretna Machine Shop to talk about what it really means to carry a founder's legacy forward while finding the courage to lead in your own way. Nubia shares the origin story of Gretna Machine Shop, founded by her father after immigrating to the U.S. with little more than a suitcase and a trade. What began in a small garage evolved into a respected Houston-based precision machining company serving oil and gas, aerospace, and defense. But the journey wasn't linear, and it wasn't easy. After her father's health declined and he passed away shortly after Nubia joined the business, she was left to navigate leadership without the long runway many second-generation owners get. For nearly a decade, she focused on administration, growth initiatives, and diversification, without fully stepping into the role of CEO. Those years, which she candidly refers to as "the dark years," revealed a hard truth: the business didn't just need management, it needed vision. This conversation explores Nubia's transformation from reluctant successor to confident leader. We talk about imposter syndrome, EOS, values-based leadership, mindful manufacturing, and how culture changes when the stress comes from the work instead of the people. It's an honest, human story about growth, grief, responsibility, and learning to lead as yourself — not as a replica of the generation before you. On this episode of Dog Works Radio, professional dog trainers from Alaska Dog Works share practical dog training tips, discuss common dog behavior problems, and explain how positive dog training and consistency to create better behavior at home. If every walk feels like a tug of war, your dog isn't being stubborn or disrespectful. They're doing what has worked. On Dog Works Radio, we break down loose leash walking from the dog's perspective and explain why pulling is not a behavior problem but a reinforcement history. When dogs learn that tension equals forward motion, pulling becomes automatic. The solution isn't correction or force. It's changing the rules of the walk. You'll learn what loose leash walking really means, why perfect heel is not the goal, and how movement itself becomes the most powerful reward. We also cover the role of consistency, management, engagement, and why short walks often train better than long ones. This episode is ideal for dog owners who want calmer, more enjoyable walks without pain, frustration, or outdated training methods. Fixing the walk often fixes far more than just the walk. Dogs pull because pulling has been reinforced, not because they are stubborn Loose leash walking means slack in the leash, not a perfect heel Forward motion is often a stronger reward than food Consistency teaches faster than correction Short, intentional walks build better habits than long ones Engagement turns walks into a shared experience, not a battle
I talk with Alexandra Wyman, a mom, author, podcast host, and pediatric occupational therapist who became a single mom after losing her husband to suicide just four days before their second wedding anniversary. Alexandra shares how she spent years following the “checklist” for a perfect life—college, career, marriage, house, kids—and how it finally felt like everything had clicked when she met her husband and started a family. When he died by suicide, that entire vision disappeared overnight, and she was left grieving not only her husband, but the life, identity, and future she thought she was supposed to have. We dig into what grief really looks like behind the scenes: Feeling like a shell of a person and having almost no capacity.Letting the smallest things be enough—sometimes just getting out of bed or giving her one-year-old a bath. Finding an anchor (for her, it was her son) as a reason to keep going, even when nothing made sense. Alexandra talks honestly about the social side of grief—how some people you expect to show up don't, how others quietly check in with simple “thinking of you” messages that mean everything, and how little we're taught about death, estates, and supporting someone through profound loss. We also explore the inner work she's done: Untangling people-pleasing, outcome-controlling, and long-held feelings of abandonment and low self-worth.Learning she didn't need a partner to “complete” her; her wholeness was already within her. Blending neuroscience (understanding what grief does to the brain) with spirituality (leaning on her “spirit team” and a bigger sense of purpose). As a mom, Alexandra is now focused on raising her son to be grounded in who he is, instead of seeking validation from others. She's shifted away from the idea that kids' behavior defines a parent's worth, and instead sees parenting as a mutual learning process where both parent and child are growing, regulating, and healing together. Out of her experience, Alexandra created: Her book, The Suicide Club: What to Do When Someone You Love Chooses Death, written as the handbook she wishes she'd had.Her podcast, Forward to Joy, where she shares tools and stories about grief, healing, and finding meaning after loss. This conversation is for any mom whose life doesn't look the way she thought it would, who feels like she's rebuilding from the ground up. Alexandra reminds us that grief isn't linear, joy isn't off-limits, and it's okay to move forward in baby steps—one small act of living and loving at a time. Connect with Alexadra's podcast here. The Journey to Becoming | Self Improvement, Productivity, Lower Stress
Have you ever felt like you're doing all the right things, yet you still feel stuck, unmotivated, or like your momentum has quietly stalled? In this episode of The Journey to Becoming, we're talking about three hidden, often overlooked things that are killing your momentum and keeping you from stepping fully into the life and purpose God has for you. These aren't obvious sins or loud distractions. They're subtle patterns—ways of thinking and living that feel normal, even responsible—but slowly keep us from growing, moving forward, and trusting God with our next step. In this episode, we unpack: • Isolation disguised as independence: when self-reliance replaces community and we stop allowing others to support, challenge, and walk with us • Waiting for the “perfect moment” to celebrate: delaying joy, gratitude, and reflection because we believe we're not “there yet” • Comparing ourselves to a past version of who we used to be: letting yesterday's capacity, seasons, or expectations define what we believe is possible today Momentum isn't just about productivity—it's about alignment. When these unseen habits take root, they quietly steal clarity, confidence, and obedience. We may want to move forward, but we're still living anchored to the past or waiting for conditions that may never be perfect. Here's the truth: God is not speaking to you from where you've been, He is always calling you from where you're going. He speaks from your future, inviting you to grow, stretch, trust, and become. If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure why your motivation feels off, this episode will help you identify what's really going on beneath the surface and invite God into the process of moving forward with intention, faith, and renewed momentum. ✨ This is your reminder that you don't have to stay where you are. You were created to move forward and God is already there, waiting for you. Change is rarely comfortable—but it's often necessary. In this episode of Forward, Kari shares the story behind buying an insurance agency and the fears she had to face along the way. We talk honestly about what it looks like to step forward when you don't feel ready, how fear can either paralyze or propel you, and why making change requires both courage and conviction. We also discuss the role family support plays when taking big steps, how unity at home makes bold decisions possible, and why growth often happens on the other side of discomfort. If you're standing at a crossroads, questioning whether you're capable of more, this episode is a reminder that faith-filled change is rarely easy—but it's always worth it. Sometimes the bravest step forward is simply deciding to move.

We're heading into February - that stretch of winter where the novelty of the New Year has worn off, it's still cold and dark, and motivation can feel… thin. In today's episode, we talk honestly about the winter blahs, why they're completely normal, and why feeling apathetic or “off” doesn't mean you're broken or falling behind. In today's episode, I'm discussing some updates I've made in this past week on the pixelart Rocketeer game that I started a number of years ago. I took a break from the programming part to do some work on the art and music for the game. The game starts with a short intro cut scene told in 1-2 pictures + text, like old NES games, so I made a intro montage picture showing Cliff's life after the events of the movie, implying he's still a pilot, the rocketpack was rebuilt, and his friends - Jenny and Peevy - are still his main motivators. Here is a short video showing some footage from last week discussed in last episode. I successfully got the throwing physics to work, so now Cliff can toss grenades he finds. He can also blow himself up that way, though, so you have to be careful. I was thinking that if you do that, maybe the death scene will be Peevy calling Cliff a chowderhead or something.See the picture at https://13thhr.wordpress.com/2026/02/09/the-thirteenth-hour-podcast-548-and-like-a-hood-ornament-91-updates-on-the-rocketeer-vs-the-third-reich-video-game-4/I also started working on the music for these intro levels. Since they are inside a castle, I wanted there to be a different theme than the outdoor flying levels, like Super Mario Brothers. I'm using a variation of the Jenny Theme from the Rocketeer soundtrack by James Horner for these levels so started working out the notes, the drums, and the tempo. It's very rough at this point, but my hope it I can make a loopable bit that can play over and over during these levels. Arnaud's Restaurant has stood in the French Quarter for more than a century, not by chasing trends, but by carrying tradition forward with care. In this episode of the Retire Southern Podcast, James Lewis sits down with owner Archie Casbarian, bartender Christoph Dornemann, Chef de Cuisine Tommy DiGiovanni, and Director of Sales Kaitlin Rodgers to explore what it takes to steward a historic New Orleans institution. The conversation moves through the history of Arnaud's, the French 75 Bar and its hidden tiki influence, classic Creole dishes like soufflé potatoes, Filet Mignon au Poivre, Duck Ellington, and Trout Meuniere, the role of private dining and gathering, and the preservation of Mardi Gras culture through the restaurant's museum. This is a story about consistency, care, and why some places endure for generations. Listen to the full episode and explore the complete written feature at retiresouthern.com.

What's preventing you from becoming everything God created you to be? This week's message challenges us to identify the ONE THING we need to let go of in order to press forward into the life Christ has for us.The Apostle Paul, despite his impressive religious credentials and painful past experiences, made a powerful declaration: "One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what lies ahead." “When I set out to write this book, I decided to approach it like a biography. After all, the Method had parents, obscure beginnings, fumbling toward its purpose, a spectacular rise, struggles as it reached the top, and an eventual decline.” This is how Isaac Butler articulates his project in The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act (Bloomsbury, February 2022). The Method tracks the origins of this transcontinental school of naturalistic acting and its many contradictions, including its emphasis on individualist achievement within communitarian organizations and the actorly tension between psychological interiority and external action when building a character. In following the life of this concept, Butler reveals the impossibly charming, ambitious, questionable cast of characters that have defined the terms of Western acting in the twentieth century. In the process, he clears up many of the public misunderstandings around Method as an approach and as a style. In this discussion, Butler details his first career in the theater as a professional actor, explores how Constantin Stanislavski's “system” of acting was the farthest thing from systematic, explains the difference between method and Method, and divulges the many rivalries and hostilities between American M/method practitioners and instructors at mid-century. Isaac Butler is the coauthor (with Dan Kois) of The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America, which NPR named one of the best books of 2018. Butler's writing has appeared in New York magazine, Slate, the Guardian, American Theatre, and other publications. For Slate, he created and hosted Lend Me Your Ears, a podcast about Shakespeare and politics, and currently co-hosts Working, a podcast about the creative process. His work as a director has been seen on stages throughout the United States. He is the co-creator, with Darcy James Argue and Peter Nigrini, of Real Enemies, a multimedia exploration of conspiracy theories in the American psyche, which was named one of the best live events of 2015 by the New York Times and has been adapted into a feature-length film. Butler holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Minnesota and teaches theater history and performance at the New School and elsewhere. He lives in Brooklyn. Annie Berke is the Film Editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books and author of Their Own Best Creations: Women Writers in Postwar Television (University of California Press, 2022). Social media didn't become addictive by accident. It was built that way. What started as a tool to help people stay connected slowly turned into something else — something that trains attention, rewards reaction, and keeps people coming back longer than they planned. Over time, that kind of constant pull changes how people think, how they wait, and how present they are with one another. Most of us didn't notice it happening. And here we are! This episode looks at what that means for everyday life and for the Church. Not with panic, and not with calls to disappear from the digital world, but with clarity. Social media isn't going away, and it will keep doing what it was designed to do. The question is how believers are called to live inside that reality. Scripture reminds us where our focus belongs, and the Holy Spirit gives us the strength to walk in discernment rather than distraction. The call hasn't changed — to fix our eyes on Christ and to use every tool wisely to point others to Him.Grateful you're here!— Pablo------------------------------------------Subscribe to receive future broadcasts and articles at:https://www.serpentsndoves.com-------------------------------------------Share.Forward this post, repost it, or pass it along to someone who might need it.Support.This broadcast is listener-supported. The February 9 edition of the AgNet News Hour kicked off a powerful week of conversations focused on pistachios, water, and California agriculture's future as hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill welcomed Richard Kreps, a longtime California pistachio grower and industry leader. With the World Ag Expo just days away, Kreps delivered a no-nonsense assessment of where agriculture stands — and where policy continues to fall short. Kreps opened by reflecting on the record-setting pistachio crop California growers just delivered. While early projections suggested a crop nearing two billion pounds, final numbers came in just over 1.5 billion pounds, still the largest harvest in industry history. Strong international marketing efforts in regions like India, Brazil, South Korea, and Europe helped move volume, with global demand continuing to outpace supply — a positive sign for pricing and long-term stability. Trade was a key topic throughout the interview. Kreps explained that pistachios, almonds, and walnuts are among the most nutrient-dense foods California produces, giving them leverage in global markets. While tariffs often dominate headlines, Kreps argued that when consumers worldwide want high-quality, healthy food, barriers tend to fall. “Nutrition matters,” he said, adding that California's permanent crops offer something few regions can match. The conversation quickly turned to water, where Kreps was especially blunt. He criticized decades of mismanagement that have left farmers dealing with unpredictable allocations despite full reservoirs. He noted that California has doubled its population without building major new water storage, while sending massive volumes of rain and snowmelt straight to the ocean. “We have enough water,” Kreps said. “We just refuse to store it.” Kreps also addressed the frustration growers feel when allocations are announced too late to plan crops. Even when water is eventually released, he said, timing often makes it unusable for planting decisions. That uncertainty forces growers to fallow land, rely on groundwater, or abandon opportunities — all while still paying for water they never receive. From an agronomic perspective, Kreps urged pistachio growers to rethink traditional nutrition strategies as bloom approaches. With newer varieties reducing extreme alternate bearing, he emphasized balancing fertility year-round rather than cutting back during lighter years. Proper nutrient management, water quality monitoring, and tissue sampling, he said, are now essential for consistent yields and long-term orchard health. Despite the challenges, Kreps struck an optimistic tone. He believes California agriculture still holds unmatched advantages in climate, soils, and expertise — but only if policymakers embrace common sense. “Farmers are the best environmentalists,” he said. “We just need the freedom to do our jobs.” Papagni and McGill closed the episode by noting that voices like Richard Kreps matter now more than ever, especially as agriculture heads into a pivotal year for water, policy, and public awareness.
