With the recent release of the classic show from 2/26/77 on Dave's Picks #29, I was inspired to bring you this fine recording of the excellent show that took place the following evening, Febuary 27th, 1977. While this is an audience recording, and the vocals are not as upfront as many of us prefer, I think you'll still find that the playing shines through. The band is definitely still 'on' this night, here in the first set they play 'Estimated Prophet' for only the 2nd time and the playing throughout is lovely. I'm particulary fond of the arrangement of 'Music Never Stopped'; afterwards Phil implored Jerry for 'one more' and boy do they respond with an excellent 'Scarlet Begonias'. There's a good chance music writer Jesse Jarnow knows more about the Grateful Dead than you ever will. Understandably, he did get a head start when he was in middle school. Since then he's been on a slippery slope that would eventually lead to writing extensively about the iconic jam band. He's penned liner notes for Dave's Picks, the archive series of classic Dead shows; compiled the entire setlist repertoire for the band's 80 disc concert box set, 30 Trips Around the Sun and has a forthcoming book that explores the Dead community entitled Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America, coming out in March. He's also the DJ of the Frow Show on freeform radio station WFMU...where, of course, he manages to squeeze in some Dead music. All the publicity this week about the release of Dave's Pick's Vol 5. gave me a good excuse to bring out another 1973 gem to play on the Deadpod.. This week's show took place about a month after the 11/17/73 show featured on Dave's Picks - this one is from 12/18/73 at the Curtis Hixon Convention Hall in Tampa FL. - yes the night before the show featured on Dick's Picks Vol 1! I know - finding these beauties that haven't been released is getting harder -but this is a wonderful show and I am sure that those of us who enjoy this stellar period in GD history will enjoy it. I'll play set 1 this week and follow it next week with set 2. This one features some fine renditions of classic tunes - the Tennessee Jed, Brown Eyed Women and Deal are wonderful.. and don't dare miss the China->Rider - that transition is GREAT! ..... and yes its simply a coincidence that i'm playing florida shows in the DEAD of winter :) Curtis Hixon Convention Hall, Tampa, FL (12/18/73) Tennessee Jed Me and My Uncle Don't Ease Me In Looks Like Rain They Love Each Other Me and Bobby McGee Brown Eyed Women Beat it on Down the Line Peggy-O El Paso Deal Jack Straw China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012513.mp3 Thank you so much for listening and for your support...
