Quote: Ok, let's see how my attempt to tackle smaller topics more often actually goes. Can I get out one show/topic per quarter? That's my personal goal for the rest of 2025. Then I'll re-evaluate. FAIL Oh well, it was a noble goal. The reasons I didn't succeed in my goal are boring, so let's skip those. There's always next year, which isn't so far away! In this episode I do manage to bring my Norway topic to a conclusion, by playing not too many more games, but by seeing more films and going to this wonderful country. Like almost all traveling, it was a lovely experience. And like almost all my wargame explorations, I learned quite a lot. That's a win, in my book. Before I get to those games, movies, and travel, however, I use this opportunity to talk about my experience at SDHistCon last month. I'd been to this unique convention once before, and again it was a great experience. One of these days I hope to make it to the Circle DC event on the opposite coast, which sounds equally fantastic.       For Norway, I was fortunate to visit in May, just in time for their national holiday. We arrived in Oslo and spent several days there. That included a side trip to Oscarsborg Fortress (Festning), which was instrumental in slowing down the German invasion and takeover of the capital & country. It's probably no exaggeration to say that the bold action of its commanding officer gave just enough time for the government and royal family to flee Oslo, ultimately forming a government-in-exile rather than one forced to surrender. Not to mention the evacuation of the nation's remaining gold reserves overseas, away from German hands (as happened in other countries). Guns of Oscarsborg Festning that fired across the narrow Oslofjord And here was the fire control room for the fixed torpedo tubes that stopped & sunk the invading Blucher cruiser The fortress museum has a great animated map of the entire event. Even in 2025 you can't always find the same things online. Oslo was an occupied capital for the entire war, and it contains a fantastic resistance museum. It made me think of the different ways countries were occupied, which ones had governments in exile, and other peculiarities. I also learned more about the various coastal raids that the British conducted in occupied Norway throughout the war. The industry thrives on selling the next revolution, the newest threat, the latest solution. But Dr. Steve Mancini—cybersecurity professor, Homeland Security veteran, and Italy's Honorary Consul in Pittsburgh—wasn't buying any of it. And honestly? Neither was I.He took me back to his Commodore 64 days, writing basic war dialers after watching War Games. The method? Dial numbers, find an open line, try passwords until one works. Translate that to today: run an Nmap scan, find an open port, brute force your way in. The principle is identical. Only the speed has changed.This resonated deeply with how I think about our Hybrid Analog Digital Society. We're so consumed with the digital evolution—the folding screens, the AI assistants, the cloud computing—that we forget the human vulnerabilities underneath remain stubbornly analog. Social engineering worked in the 1930s, it worked when I was a kid in Florence, and it works today in your inbox.Steve shared a story about a family member who received a scam call. The caller asked if their social security number "had a six in it." A one-in-nine guess. Yet that simple psychological trick led to remote software being installed on their computer. Technology gets smarter; human psychology stays the same.What struck me most was his observation about his students—a generation so immersed in technology that they've become numb to breaches. "So what?" has become the default response. The data sells, the breaches happen, you get two years of free credit monitoring, and life goes on. Groundhog Day.But the deeper concern isn't the breaches. It's what this technological immersion is doing to our capacity for critical thinking, for human instinct. Steve pointed out something that should unsettle us: the algorithms feeding content to young minds are designed for addiction, manipulating brain chemistry with endorphin kicks from endless scrolling. We won't know the full effects of a generation raised on smartphones until they're forty, having scrolled through social media for thirty years.I asked what we can do. His answer was simple but profound: humans need to decide how much they want technology in their lives. Parents putting smartphones in six-year-olds' hands might want to reconsider. Schools clinging to the idea that they're "teaching technology" miss the point—students already know the apps better than their professors. What they don't know is how to think without them.He's gone back to paper and pencil tests. Old school. Because when the power goes out—literally or metaphorically—you need a brain that works independently.Ancient cultures, Steve reminded me, built civilizations with nothing but their minds, parchment, and each other. They were, in many ways, a thousand times smarter than us because they had no crutches. Now we call our smartphones "smart" while they make us incrementally dumber.This isn't anti-technology doom-saying. Neither Steve nor I oppose technological progress. The conversation acknowledged AI's genuine benefits in medicine, in solving specific problems. But this relentless push for the "easy button"—the promise that you don't have to think, just click—that's where we lose something essential.The ultimate breach, we concluded, isn't someone stealing your data. It's breaching the mind itself. In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career extremely talented and iconic actor... Michael Madsen! Born in Chicago to a filmmaking and author mother and a veteran/firefighting father, this actor went against the grain during his rather chaotic upbringing and got his start in theater. Specifically with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company as John Malkovich's apprentice. His first noteworthy role being that of a small role in the science fiction film, WarGames. After that he continued acting in small roles for films and television shows until he eventually launched his career by playing Bump Bailey in The Natural (1984). He then went onto to starring in Quentin Taratino's directoral debut film, Reservoir Dogs, as Mr. Blonde. A role that quickly changed his status from actor to cultural icon. He later starred and worked in many films such as, Species (1995), The Getaway (1994), and Donnie Brasco (1997), Kill Bill Vol. 1  (2003) and 2 (2004), Sin City (2005), and many more.
