Hearken, ye Cabalists! Gather round, for this day the Lords convene in discourse. They speak first of Jamie and AC's newest chronicle of dread and mystery, wrought in the Call of Cthulhu. Thereafter, a query from a faithful listener shall be pondered, touching upon the use of relics and tokens within the gaming hall. Lastly, the Roundtable shall be set, where wisdom is shared on the keeping of momentum and the weariness that oft befalls the Game Master. Raise thy voices in mirth! Huzzah!

This week, as media reports suggest that the US is considering withdrawing its troops from the Baltics, we break down what presence the US really has on NATO's eastern flank. We look at the large-scale military exercises being led by other NATO allies in the Baltics – in symbolic opposition to the joint Zapad drills of Russia and Belarus – as well as the fiscal difficulties European countries now face trying to fund greater defence spending. We discuss this in the context of Russian sanctions, as Europe prepares a 19th package of measures, but many countries maintain business ties with Moscow via third-party countries.
In Episode 29, DDSWTNP go to space to get a good look at the earth in a time of war, turning to one of DeLillo's greatest short stories, “Human Moments in World War III,” first published in July 1983. We examine this tale of two future astronauts who have become soldiers for its strategic engagement with the tropes of science fiction, its eerie portrayals of the so-called “Overview Effect” available from a spacecraft window, and its compression and renewal of motifs from Americana, End Zone, and Ratner's Star. Nostalgia, patriotism, history, the soldier's mindset in following inhuman commands, and even the role of poetry and voice – all these come to be recast in DeLillo's shrewd take on an era of “Star Wars” defense initiatives, a Cold War giving way to hot wars, and very tricky ways out of Mutually Assured Destruction. Along the way we read the 1980s thoughts of an expert on lasers in space, consider what it means to have an alien perspective on one's earthly home and diurnal rhythms, and speculate on connections between “Human Moments” and White Noise still to come. Texts referred to and discussed in this episode: Don DeLillo. “Human Moments in World War III.” Published in Esquire (July 1983) and reprinted in The Angel Esmeralda (2011). As we'rew approaching our 10th edition we thought it might be fun to avail ourselves of an all too rare opportunity - to get someone heavily involved in a Doctor Who project to make their own contribiutoon to its Happy Times and Places. Fortunately Benjamin Cook, who was in charge of the recent The War Games in Colour broadcast, was more than happy to share his thoughts and insights regarding this huge undertaking. So here we go - and what a joy it is to get his perspective into the making of this alternative version. Oh, and your host is positively encouraged by Ben to be honest about any perceived shortcomings ... and he is equally bold and forthright in his opinion - entertainingly so! Ben is, of course, brimming with positivity and fascinating facts - from the inside, from directly behind-the-scenes and we are really grateful to him for the time and care he has taken over his contribution. Oh, but he does say a mildly rude word towards the end, you have been warned. #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Charlie's Nightmare: When Video Games and Family Secrets CollideWelcome to this episode of Gank That Drank: A Supernatural Drinking Game Podcast. Hosts Nate McWhorter and Krissy Lenz dive into Supernatural's beloved Season 8 episode "Pac-Man Fever," where Charlie Bradbury returns with secrets darker than her hacking past. This fan-favorite episode blends video game nostalgia with emotional family drama, creating one of the series' most memorable Charlie-centric stories. The Deep Dive DiscussionThe hosts explore how "Pac-Man Fever" masterfully balances Charlie's comedic FBI impersonation fumbles with the heartbreaking revelation about her comatose mother. They discuss how the episode transforms Charlie from a quirky recurring character into someone with genuine emotional depth, particularly through her relationship with Dean that evolves into a true big brother/little sister dynamic. The video game dream sequence serves as both thrilling action and metaphor for Charlie's guilt over her parents' accident.Nate and Krissy praise the episode's ability to deliver both supernatural thrills and emotional payoffs, noting how the final scenes—from Dean's protective kiss on Charlie's forehead to the brothers' sincere hug—represent some of the series' most genuine moments of familial love. They also can't help but rant about the boys' persistent habit of buying six-packs instead of buying beer in bulk, which becomes a running joke throughout their discussion.Additional Highlights:The drinking game features rules for gunshots (the "doozy" rule), Sam's declining health, and Charlie's signature "dude" catchphraseDiscussion of guest star appearances, including Manny Jacinto's brief role as one of the unfortunate gamersAnalysis of how the episode handles the moral complexity of Sam killing a teenage djinnAppreciation for the episode's perfect blend of War Games references and emotional storytellingDebate over Charlie's mysteriously accurate shooting skills and whether video game experience translates to real-world marksmanshipFinal ThoughtsBoth hosts agree that "Pac-Man Fever" stands as one of Supernatural's finest episodes, successfully deepening Charlie's character while delivering the monster-of-the-week format fans love. The episode's exploration of family, guilt, and letting go resonates long after the final scene of Charlie reading The Hobbit to her mother one last time.Ready to gank your own drank? John Horn, professor of economics at Washington University's Olin Business School and former McKinsey strategist, shares a disciplined framework for understanding competitive behavior by applying game theory and structured simulations. In this episode, he explains how companies can elevate competitor analysis from basic intelligence gathering to actionable strategic insight. Horn begins by debunking the common misconception that many competitors behave irrationally. As he puts it: “Every single time a client said the competitor is irrational, I could ask them... two, three questions which would explain... why the company was being rational in what they were doing.” He outlines a four-step framework leaders can use to model likely competitive behavior: Observe what competitors say and do, including press releases, earnings calls, and other public data. Assess their assets, resources, and capabilities, and imagine what you'd do in their position. Identify the decision-maker and their background to infer how they think: “If you grew up as a marketer and you became a CEO, you're going to look at the world from a marketing perspective.” Make a short-term prediction, write it down, and revisit it: “It becomes a virtuous cycle of getting a better insight into how that competitor thinks.” Horn emphasizes that many firms fall short because they stop at step one or lack mechanisms to feed deeper insights into decision-making. He also stresses the role of empathy—not sympathy—in strategy: “I do have to empathize, understand why they're making the choices they make.” War gaming, in Horn's view, is a powerful simulation tool, not theater. “It's a chance to practice business choices in a risk-free way... and just a much more realistic discussion.” For entrepreneurs or under-resourced teams, Horn offers a lighter-weight version called "War Gaming Lite," which enables rapid, structured thinking about competitive responses using only internal knowledge and role-playing. He also discusses how human biases, short-term incentives, and lack of time make both your firm and your rivals more predictable than you might think: “People really are predictable... It's not rocket science—it's about being disciplined.” Whether you're a startup founder or a Fortune 500 executive, this episode offers practical steps to improve your strategic foresight and competitive positioning, grounded in empathy, behavioral realism, and iterative prediction. In Episode 108 of Breaking History, Matt Ehret and Ghost connect historical patterns to the present-day collapse of Western leadership, arguing that the same elite forces orchestrating modern chaos have been operating since the 19th century. They analyze Biden's mental decline, Macron's flailing regime in France, and how color revolutions and regime-change operations are now targeting Western nations themselves. The duo explores secretive weather manipulation programs and geoengineering, linking modern environmental disasters to Cold War-era weaponization of science. They revisit the Paris Climate Accord, the Club of Rome, and the UN's role in pushing a depopulation and deindustrialization agenda through the façade of environmentalism. From the rise of technocrats like Klaus Schwab and the influence of British intelligence on American policy, to the psychological operations behind COVID and climate fear porn, Matt and Ghost argue that the globalist game plan is spiritual, not just political. This episode is a crash course in decoding elite systems of control, past and present, and offers a warning: the same empires that used covert warfare abroad have now turned inward, sacrificing their own citizens to maintain power.
